Niu Vision Media and Echelon Studios are teaming to bring “Dead to Rights,” the Chinese wartime drama from director Shen Ao (“No More Bets”), to North American audiences.

The film, produced by Furuo Qing of “The Wandering Earth” franchise fame, will open in U.S. and Canadian theaters Aug. 15 via Niu Vision Media distribution, with a streaming rollout planned for later this year.

Set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and drawing from documented historical events, “Dead to Rights” follows A Chang (Liu Haoran of the “Detective Chinatown” franchise), a postman who assumes the identity of a photo developer to survive the Japanese occupation. Operating from within the walls of a Japanese-controlled studio, he covertly shelters Chinese soldiers and civilians in an act of quiet resistance.

The release continues Niu Vision and Echelon’s collaboration in bringing auteur-driven Asian cinema to international markets.

In 2003, creator and showrunner Aaron Sorkin abruptly left his acclaimed and award-winning NBC political drama series "The West Wing"  after overseeing it for four seasons. At the time, the show's ratings were comparatively low and there was talk of production and budget issues. Be that as it may, Sorkin still had a year left in his contract, and NBC would have welcomed him to continue, so the decision may have seemed surprising to some.

Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” retained its lead at the China box office for a second weekend, earning RMB80.2 million ($11.1 million) from July 11–13, according to data from Artisan Gateway.

The dinosaur tentpole has now amassed $62.8 million after 12 days on release.

In a rare tie, local thriller “Malice” and racing drama “F1: The Movie” shared second place with $8.2 million each. “Malice,” produced by As One Production, has reached a cumulative total of $25.6 million. Directed by Lai Mukuan and Yao Wenyi, the film follows journalist Ye Pan (Zhang Xiaofei), who becomes the centre of controversy when she accuses nurse Li Yue and mother You Qian of involvement in a mysterious double fall. Her reporting ignites a public uproar as layers of truth and public opinion collide.

Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” debuted at No. 1 at the China box office over the July 4–6 weekend, grossing RMB184.8 million ($25.7 million), according to Artisan Gateway.

The film, directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend, marks a revival of the dinosaur franchise for a new era and secured the top spot despite competition from strong holdovers. Imax accounted for $5.5 million of the China total.

Tms Entertainment’s “Detective Conan: The Movie – One‑Eyed Flashback” – the 28th installment of the long-running franchise – continued its successful run, earning $8.4 million in its second weekend to bring its cumulative total to $38.6 million.

"Severance" season 2 episode 8, "Sweet Vitriol," continues the previous episode's theme of focusing on a single character's story. Lieber, who was previously overseeing genre programming, will still report to Laura Lancaster, head of co-pro television and ongoing series. Vernon Sanders, head of TV at Amazon MGM Studios, announced the news in an internal note on Monday.

“In this new role, Tom will provide single-threaded leadership of all new development and ongoing series produced in the U.K.,” the memo reads. “The work and executives that were formerly assigned to our Pan-English team will fold into Tom’s new group.”

Last week, it was announced that TV vet Rola Bauer was stepping down from her role as head of English-language global original series produced outside the U.S.

The Greek government has further delayed reopening the country’s popular 40% tax rebate for international film and TV productions until January 2025 as it strives to clear a funding backlog and receive a fresh budget.

The rebate has been closed for new applications since May 1. It was expected to formally reopen on October 1, administered by the newly-created Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre - Creative Greece (Hfac-Creative Greece).

The film, penned by Riche and Luc Bossi, is inspired by the novel “The Little Girl Who Swallowed a Cloud as Big as The Eiffel Tower” by best-selling author Romain Puértolas. Production will start in May 2024 for a Summer 2026 release.

Malice and Pusha T sat down with their manager Steven Victor in a recent interview with Goat, in which the duo revealed whom they’d like to collaborate with in the future.
