Niu Vision Media and Echelon Studios are teaming to bring “Dead to Rights,” the Chinese wartime drama from director Shen Ao (“No More Bets”), to North American audiences.
The film, produced by Furuo Qing of “The Wandering Earth” franchise fame, will open in U.S. and Canadian theaters Aug. 15 via Niu Vision Media distribution, with a streaming rollout planned for later this year.
Set against the backdrop of the 1937 Nanjing Massacre and drawing from documented historical events, “Dead to Rights” follows A Chang (Liu Haoran of the “Detective Chinatown” franchise), a postman who assumes the identity of a photo developer to survive the Japanese occupation. Operating from within the walls of a Japanese-controlled studio, he covertly shelters Chinese soldiers and civilians in an act of quiet resistance.
The release continues Niu Vision and Echelon’s collaboration in bringing auteur-driven Asian cinema to international markets.

In 2003, creator and showrunner Aaron Sorkin abruptly left his acclaimed and award-winning NBC political drama series "The West Wing" after overseeing it for four seasons. At the time, the show's ratings were comparatively low and there was talk of production and budget issues. Be that as it may, Sorkin still had a year left in his contract, and NBC would have welcomed him to continue, so the decision may have seemed surprising to some.
In a 2005 interview with Jay Rayner of The Guardian, Sorkin opened up on his departure from "The West Wing." One of the things he mentioned was a new contract, which changed his earnings -- formerly tied to the show's success -- into a flat rate:
"There was no longer a strong incentive to make it good, just efficiently, and I'm not the guy for that."
Another contributing factor Sorkin named was the major change in political status quo,...

The first film presented a compelling paradox: a team of warriors for whom death was a forgotten concept, their centuries of existence layering high-stakes action with a profound existential weariness. The Old Guard 2 returns to this world only to shatter its foundational rule.
The team’s eternal anchor, their leader Andy (Charlize Theron), is now mortal. This inversion of her nature sends ripples through the group, fundamentally altering the stakes of every battle and every decision. The sequel picks up the threads of a narrative already frayed by internal strife, with the exile of Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) leaving a wound on their found family.
Yet a far older and deeper wound is torn open with the reemergence of Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo), Andy’s first companion, who surfaces after five centuries of unspeakable torment at the bottom of the sea. The stage is thus set for a conflict defined...

The following contains spoilers for Holland, premiering March 27, 2025 on Prime Video.
Mimi Cave's Prime Video film Holland refers not to the Netherlands -- but Holland, Michigan, where Dutch-Americans dutifully attend their tulips and every citizen owns a pair of klompen for special occasions. Nicole Kidman's character Nancy Vandergroot teaches home economics, or "Life Management," where she educates malleable youths in the art of how to make Dutch baby pancakes. The film's iteration of Holland isn't a place where people need to manage anything, but rather learn the traditions that will make it easiest to go with the general flow of the town and its people.
The stick in the mud is Nancy, who -- upon losing an earring and summarily firing a babysitter -- rouses from her passivity with a hellbent verve. Suddenly she's alert, paranoid, and begins to look for trouble where, ostensibly, there is none. As...

This article contains spoilers for "Severance" season 2 episode 8, "Sweet Vitriol."
"Severance" season 2 episode 8, "Sweet Vitriol," continues the previous episode's theme of focusing on a single character's story. This time, the eyes are on Patricia Arquette's Harmony Cobel, who takes a trip to the town she left behind to acquire some important papers that reveal that she, not Jame Eagan (Michael Siberry), was the inventor of the severance procedures. It's a nice little revelation but ultimately doesn't add a lot to Cobel, whose narrative continues to be adrift after Lumon cut her loose.
This is a problem especially since the underwhelming episode follows the excellent "Lost-"influenced "Severance" season 2 episode 7, "Chikhai Bardo." That episode focuses on Gemma (Dichen Lachman) and elevates her from a damsel in distress figure to a very real, very complex person whose particular predicament is integral to the entire show's central secrets. What's more, the episode...

The literature of the fantasy genre has evolved in recent years and has seen the release of many books that offer stories from the villain's point of view. A story where the villain is the main protagonist offers the opportunity to see their origins, the motivations behind their twisted schemes and allows readers the chance to question the true boundaries between good and evil.

Frigid take: Nicole Kidman is one of the most gifted and flat-out watchable movie stars working today. Now in the 41st year of her film acting career, she has been nominated for five Oscars (with a Best Actress win for "The Hours"), and a staggering 15 Screen Actors Awards (with one win in 2017 for "Big Little Lies"). She feels perfectly at home in any genre, and, at 57 years old, is more prolific than ever thanks to her gleeful embrace of television films and miniseries. Kidman loves to work as much as we love watching her work!
For evidence of her versatility, you can zoom in on pretty much any four-year chunk of her career and be wowed. Take 1995 - 1999 for instance: she went from Caped Crusader love interest in "Batman Forever" to Femme Fatale weather woman in "To Die For" to doomed seeker in the costume drama "The Portrait of a Lady...

Destruction have announced their 16th studio album, Birth of Malice, arriving March 7th via Nuclear Blast Records. The video for the second single, the eponymous track “Destruction,” can be streamed now.
Releasing a self-titled song this deep into their career is a bold move, but the German thrash vets pull it off, delivering a proper anthem that captures the essence of the band, its fans, and its legacy: “We are Destruction!” This is full-bore thrash with a punkish snarl and a raw, live-sound production — complemented by some excellent concert footage of the band and its rabid fanbase in the accompanying video.
“The crushing song ‘Destruction’ is the perfect opener for this album: It builds a bridge between our old-school sound and riffing, including song title phrases from classic Destruction tracks and more shredding and melodic twin lead guitars that will pinch your brain with its razorsharp leads!” enthused the band via a press release.

They were an alien race who mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind ships far beyond anything humans could develop. And, it looks like the trio have found a base full of them. And then a neutron star flares up, forcing them to abandon their discovery.
That was a year ago. Now George has developed some strange tumours, his insurance covers removing them, apart from the 90% deductible that is. And the loan Max took out, with one of his organs as collateral, has come due,...

The early ‘90s were a peculiar period in the ascendant career of young Nicole Kidman. Hot off her breakthrough in Dead Calm (1989), Hollywood poached her quickly, (mis)casting her in a series of prominent but mostly forgettable, largely thankless roles—from Days of Thunder (1990) and Billy Bathgate (1991) to Far and Away (1992) and My Life (1993). In between, her real claim to fame (for a time) was bagging Hollywood’s biggest star, not necessarily popping on screen. Steven Spielberg's filmmaking techniques took a large bound forward in 2001 with the release of "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." The sci-fi film, set in a near future populated by conscious androids, was a project Spielberg took over from an ailing Stanley Kubrick, who passed on it when he felt Spielberg could do it better. In "A.I.," Spielberg's photography and editing were very different from the slick, adventure films and glossy prestige pictures he had become popular making. Now everything was hazy, staid, more deliberate.
Although he had already won three Oscars (two for "Schindler's List" and one for "Saving Private Ryan") and was widely considered to be a reigning master of Hollywood's blockbuster class, Spielberg evolved. After 2001, Spielberg's career bifurcated into dispassionate effects-based thrillers wherein the filmmaker was merely experimenting, and deeply passionate political thrillers that used the politics of the past to reflect on issues of the day.

Keigo Higashino's oeuvre needs no introduction since he is one of the foremost writers of contemporary Japanese fiction. Crime fiction is a wide banner, especially in Japanese literature, but this writer has made a name for himself through page-turners involving complex characters and spiraling perplexities. I sailed through “A Death in Tokyo” (2022), a who-done-it thriller which is the third installment of the Detective Kaga series, preceded by “Malice” (2014), “Newcomer” (2018) and followed by “The Final Curtain” (2023).

Crime fiction authors face a unique challenge: they must unveil the story as perceived by its diverse characters. This task involves presenting the narrative through multiple viewpoints, each adding depth and complexity to the unfolding mystery. In a way, we stand side-by-side detective Kaga who goes about investigating the death of Takeaki Aoyagi, along with his associate Matsumiya. The...

Clipse rapper No Malice has thrown his hat into the ring of unpredictable musical team-ups, welcoming potential collaborations with the likes of Coldplay and The Killers.
Malice and Pusha T sat down with their manager Steven Victor in a recent interview with Goat, in which the duo revealed whom they’d like to collaborate with in the future.
“As far as hip-hop goes, the highwater mark is always collaborating with Jay-Z, so I would like that,” Malice began. “Outside of hip-hop, I would like to see Clipse with artists like Coldplay and The Killers, with big arena records, festivals, something that moves globally.”
King Push, however, feels a little differently, after seemingly reaching his collaboration limit. “Man. I don’t know. I’m collab’d out,” he said. “I don’t even care about collaborations if it’s not among a great body of work. I’m into cohesive, great bodies of work.

Naming horror movies is a serious business. It needs to sound scary, it shouldn’t give too much away, ideally it shouldn’t be named the same as someone else’s film, but it should also be memorable enough to stick in the brain. So unsurprisingly a lot of horror filmmakers have opted to call their movie “scary sounding adjective”.
But which word is scariest? We have ranked the movies based entirely on how alarming our perception of the adjective is. Come at us in the comments.
7. Ominous
Rain clouds can be ominous. Your boss saying “can I borrow you for a minute” can be ominous.
But to describe your child dying in an accident and a mysterious stranger offering to bring him back to life as “Ominous” feels like a bit of an understatement. That’s the plot of this film from 2015 by Peter Sullivan, which sounds like it...
