Dark Universe

Comics on Film: What Is 'Justice League Dark?' We Break It Down
While we’ve heard rumblings off and on for most of the past four years concerning a possible foray into the DC Comics Universe by none other than director Guillermo del Toro, it looks as if the film he’d spent his time developing at Warner Bros. has been handed off to a new director. While it’s too bad we won’t be seeing the Hellboy director taking on the superhero genre again anytime soon, it’s hard not to get at least a little excited at the possibilities of Dark Universe, aka Justice League Dark, and how the characters can fit together on screen. It's true that we have seen several of the traditional “Jld” characters adapted before in multiple mediums, they’ve never been brought together in a way like this before, and have...

Doug Liman Attached to Direct DC's Dark Universe
Yesterday, Variety brought word that Doug Liman is coming on board one of DC's next films, Dark Universe.  Yep, the director of 2014's biggest 'Why is no one going to see this movie, it's sooo good?!?' film Edge of Tomorrow is entering a franchise that has to date, created the largest rift between professional movie watchers and critics, and the general public.  While plot details are being kept under wraps, the story revolves around a dark Justice League team that consists of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. So this is what? Suicide Squad Redux? It would seem that DC is content to keep on going dark. Yes sir and madam, DC, the goth kids that hang out behind the janitor's office...

The 'Justice League Dark' Movie Is Now Happening with 'Edge of Tomorrow' Director
Suicide Squad may have ultimately ended up disappointing fans, but if what drew you to the movie was a desire to see an ensemble about troubled people with powers becoming the heroes they never really wanted to be, then we've got some exciting news for you: Justice League Dark is still happening. It's now being called Dark Universe and will be directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) based off of a script written by Guillermo del Toro, who will also produce. As of now there are no plot details, but we do have a character roster of who is expected to make up this alternative Justice League. It includes: John Constantine Swamp Thing Dead Man Zatanna Etrigan the Demon Dark Universe does not currently have a release date, and it's stumbled...

Warner Bros.' Dark Universe Gets A New Director
While never officially announced, Guillermo del Toro has in the last few years been hyping up Dark Universe, his vision of DC Comics’ Justice League Dark, a collection of supernatural heroes who tackle the problems the Justice League can’t, made up of the likes of John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon. Think of the Bprd from Hellboy, and you would be on the right track. The project has been seemingly stalled recently, with Del Toro sidetracked by other projects, and now Variety are reporting that has left the project, with Go and The Bourne Identity's Doug Liman signing on as his replacement. This puts into question the fate of the Channing Tatum starring X-Men spin-off, Gambit, which Liman was originally set to direct, but has been beset by problems lately. According to the publication, him joining Dark Universe is the result of a mutual split...

Doug Liman Will Direct Dark Universe, DC’s Justice League Dark
Guillermo del Toro left the Justice League Dark adaptation sometime last year, but now Dark Universe has a new director in Edge of Tomorrow‘s Doug Liman. At some point over the last couple of years Guillermo del Toro was set to both write and directed Dark Universe (that’s the name they’re going with, probably to […]

Justice League Dark (2017)
Director Doug Liman drops 'Gambit' to jump into DC's 'Dark Universe'
Justice League Dark (2017)
It’s starting to feel like there’s something very wrong with the Gambit movie. Is that fair? The thing’s gone through a number of different directors at this point, and it doesn’t feel like it’s any closer to actually happening. I’ve talked to directors who got close and then backed away, and I have yet to be able to pin down exactly what’s going on here. Considering this is a major release for Fox, it’s got Channing Tatum attached, and anything X-Men related is given pretty much any resources they need, it is shocking that it’s this hard to get a filmmaker to say yes to the job. Doug Liman is the latest guy to jump ship, and in his case, he’s got a pretty great plan B, one that I’ve been curious about since Guillermo Del Toro first mentioned it years ago.

DC's Justice League Dark Movie Gets Edge of Tomorrow Director
Warner Bros. still has a lot of confidence in their DC Comics movies, despite dreadful reviews for both Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Even with a full slate already announced for the next few years, the studio is working on even more projects for their DC Extended Universe. That being the case, it looks like Warner Bros. is finally moving ahead with a Justice League Dark movie, also known as http://movieweb.com/justice-league-dark-movie-story-production-start-date/Dark Universe, with director Doug Liman at the helm.

Variety broke the news on Wednesday, confirming that the Edge of Tomorrow director would be taking on the movie. According to the report, Scott Rudin, who has long been attached to the project, will be producing Justice League Dark, with Michael Gilio writing the script. Warner Bros. has yet to officially make the announcement, but Variety is confidently stating that this is indeed happening.

Doug Liman Takes Point On Justice League Dark, Reportedly No Longer Attached To Gambit
Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has agreed terms to helm Justice League Dark for Warner Bros. – at the expense of Gambit, it seems.

Injecting new life into the languishing superhero project, word of Liman’s appointment comes by way of Variety, revealing that this new interpretation of DC and Warner’s Dark Universe will be penned by Michael Gilio. It’s welcome news for fans of the cult supernatural property, though such a coup only portends trouble for the Channing Tatum-fronted Gambit spinoff, with sources close to Variety claiming that Liman has now departed the troubled X-Men spinoff.

Though 20th Century Fox offered no comment at the time of writing, that’s an amicable split that had been long in the cards, given that Liman has been quietly lining up additional projects beyond the mutant universe over the past few months, during which time Gambit was ordered to...

Newswire: Doug Liman drops Channing Tatum’s Gambit on his way to DC’s Dark Universe
In a move that seems especially appropriate for an adaptation about characters who frequently interact with the spookier side of DC comics, the long-in-the-works Justice League Dark movie has risen from its grave and taken on a new, more powerful form. As reported by Variety, the project is back on with Edge Of Tomorrow’s Doug Liman set to direct, and though Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment haven’t said anything official, the movie will reportedly revolve around classic DC heroes (or “heroes”) John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan. Variety is also referring to the film as Dark Universe instead of Justice League Dark, but it’s unclear how official that is.

For years, Guillermo Del Toro was working on a Justice League Dark movie, but like most of his projects, it eventually fizzled out. Then, just last month, DC officially announced an animated Justice League Dark movie...

Breaking News: Director Doug Liman Ditches Gambit Flick For Justice League Dark
If there's one Fox property that seems to constantly be getting the shaft, it's Gambit. It's gone through a couple directors, a delayed release, and rumors of losing its lead Channing Tatum (which proved to be false). But if you thought that would be the end of its problems, you'd be wrong.

In a report from THR, the outlet states that Gambit has officially lost director Doug Liman, who took on the project October 2015 after Rupert Wyatt dropped out. Without a doubt, the delay in release likely played a big role in this. It's never a good sign when a film's release date disappears, and it's even worse when it doesn't show up in a different spot down the line.

But it's not all, Variety near-simultaneously published that Liman has signed on to direct Dark Universe, a.k.a. Justice League Dark (the outlet also backs up claims from THR...

Warner Bros.' Justice League Dark Movie Will Be Directed By Doug Liman
For years, Guillermo del Toro was developing a Justice League Dark film for Warner Bros. He eventually dropped out of the project and an animated film was announced. After I heard there was going to be an animated movie, I wasn't sure if the live action movie was still in play. I guess it is, because Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has reportedly been hired to direct it.

Liman was supposed to be directing the Gambit movie for Fox, but according to Variety, he has officially left that project to take on this one. There's no word on who will take on Gambit next, but that movie has had some serious problems with locking down a director.

Liman is a solid director who has also directed films such as Swingers, Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and more. I think he's a good pick for the project, but...

Justice League Dark Moves Forward with Director Doug Liman
While the next few films in the DC movieverse are locked in, we were curious to find out what movies would be included in the next wave, and it looks like we’ll be getting a big screen adaptation of the darker side of the DC universe.

According to Variety, Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) has left Gambit for Fox and will instead be directing Justice League Dark, also referred to as Dark Universe, for Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment.

At one point, Guillermo del Toro was interested in directing, but THR is reporting that he is no longer involved with the project, while Scott Rudin is now onboard as a producer. Michael Gilio will write the screenplay.

With the Justice League Dark cast featuring John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon, who would you like to see fill these roles?

Edge Of Tomorrow Director Doug Liman Will Helm WB And DC's Justice League Dark Movie
We all wondered if Justice League Dark/Dark Universe would even get off the ground once original director Guillermo del Toro parted ways with the project, but Variety just announced that Warner Bros. has replaced him with none other than Doug Liman, who will be most familiar to CBMers for the likes of The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow. Though story details are under wraps for now, the site does confirm that the team will consist of Det. John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna and Etrigan the Demon. It seems this incarnation of ol' Jc shall be a lawman. Del Toro and Scott Rudin will produce Dark Universe, which is expected to "play a major role in the new D.C. Cinematic Universe" Update: As many assumed given this news, it appears Liman will no longer direct Fox's Gambit movie.

Les Musaraignes tueuses (1959)
Hazzard County Reunion In “Return Of The Killer Shrews”
Les Musaraignes tueuses (1959)
Ray Kelllogg’s 1959 schlocker The Killer Shrews is probably best remembered for the laughable titular beasts, actually dogs “dressed” as shrews, but has gone on to b-movie infamy over time via countless video releases and a hilarious Mystery Science Theater 3000 roast. In this day and age, where years between sequels is hardly a concern (notably on follow-ups to Hg Lewis films, for some reason: 41 years between Lewis’ Two Thousand Maniacs (’64) and Tim Sullivan’s 2001 Maniacs (’05); and 39 years between his Blood Feast (’63) and its follow-up Blood Feast 2 (’02), but these are just two examples), it is no surprise that filmmaker Steve Latshaw would give new life to the cult of Shrew with Return Of The Killer Shrews.

Latshaw has reveled in the off-beat his whole career, helming b-movie goodies Dark Universe in 1993, and Jack-o in 1995, and writing dozens more since. On Shrews he reunites with star James Best, with whom Latshaw...
