No matter how horrifying a concept, most scary movies always try to offer their viewers one thing: hope. Excluding the most depraved projects, this genre is filled with as many heroic protagonists as it is despicable monsters, those characters who promise viewers that there's a chance of good prevailing over evil and the terrifying antagonist being defeated. It's an integral aspect of most cinematic storytelling, and it is completely absent in Tomm Coker and David Elliot's Catacombs.

In their ongoing quest to bring most of Charles Band’s Empire Films from the ’80s to Blu-ray, Scream Factory is releasing another double feature containing two of the studio’s better efforts: 1984’s The Dungeonmaster (aka Ragewar) and Eliminators from 1986.

Though omnipresent in the horror genre since Dead of Night in 1945 (or even Waxworks in 1924 if you’re willing to count it), the anthology film has rarely extended into the realm of sci-fi or fantasy—Heavy Metal aside, of course. One of the rare exceptions is The Dungeonmaster, an anthology that assembles the all-star team of Empire Pictures in the mid-’80s: Charles Band, John Carl Buechler, Dave Allen, Ted Nicolaou, Pater Manoogian and several others.

Having issued definitive collector’s editions of a number of high-profile horror classics of the ’80s and ’90s, Scream Factory often turns to smaller and more obscure titles to remind fans of some of the gems that once lined video store shelves. Lately they’ve been killing it with HD releases of Charles Band’s old Empire Pictures titles, several of which are appearing on home video for the first time since VHS (like their recent release of Ghost Town, for example). While both Cellar Dweller and Catacombs got a DVD release in 2013 as part of an “All Night Horror Marathon” four-film collection (the DVD debut of both movies), this new double feature Blu-ray is the first time either can be seen in high-def.

The second week of April is a big one for horror fans, as one of the most buzzed-about indie genre films of 2014—The Babadook—is finally coming home this Tuesday courtesy of Scream Factory and IFC Midnight. There are also a multitude of classic cult titles arriving in high-def on April 14th as well, including Long Weekend, Tales of Terror, the sequels to both The Toxic Avenger and Class of Nuke ’Em High, and Class of 1984.

Several new titles are also being released this week including Jinn, Roadside, and Echoes, and 20th Century Fox is unleashing their terror-filled sequel, The Woman in Black 2 Angel of Death, on both Blu-ray and DVD.

Scream Factory celebrated Friday the 13th in style for the second month in a row last week by once again setting their sights on the upcoming Summer of Fear: Part 2 and announcing a bunch of horror films they plan to release on Blu-ray when longer days and warmer nights usher in another summer.

- Empire Pictures’ Cellar Dweller and Catacombs (both from 1988) will share a double bill. John Carl Buechler (Troll, Friday the 13th Part VII) directed Cellar and David Schmoeller (Tourist Trap, Puppetmaster, The Seduction) directed Catacombs.

All are expected to land on 7/14 and will receive new widescreen HD transfers. Pre-order links will go up next month.

The first All Night Horror Marathon was pretty damn fun. What’s the Matter With Helen, The Outing, The Vagrant and The Godsend were on the bill, and I was shocked to find that there were still older horror classics that I could fall in love with in much the same way as some of the B favorites with which I became enamored as a kid. The Outing and The Godsend are must see movies focusing on schlock and kid horror respectively. With Volume 2 of the same series from Scream Factory there’s an added bonus; we get to enjoy Empire era horror from the 80’s and early 90’s.
