Why Alicia Silverstone Turned Down Beverly Hills, 90210
Image
Even though she really became a movie star with Amy Heckerling's 1995 screwball comedy, "Clueless," if you were a youngster in the 1990s, there's no way you didn't know Alicia Silverstone from those steamy and rebellious Aerosmith music videos — "Amazing," "Cryin'," and "Crazy" — first. You had to: She was drop-dead gorgeous, cute, and mysterious, and had a lot of opportunities to choose from even before "Clueless" became a hit. She had truly been the Queen of the '90s for a while, and even I know that, as a guy who wasn't necessarily well-versed in the Silverstone universe.

But even before high-schooler Cher Horowitz conquered the big screen next to Brittany Murphy,...

Unseen ‘Clueless’ Footage Released as ’90s Classic Celebrates 30 Years — or, Like, Whatever
Image
“Entertainment Tonight” has pulled out of its vaults several minutes of previously unseen behind-the-scenes “Clueless” footage, showcasing Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Breckin Meyer, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, director Amy Heckerling, and the rest of the team. In the last month, many involved with the production have appeared at 30th anniversary events, heralding the indelible mark left by the high school classic on pop culture.

The clips include one-on-one interviews with the cast members, many of whom were teenagers at the time, describing their characters. In one segment, Meyer reveals that he was familiar with being a high school student in Beverly Hills — even though the movie’s fictional Bronson Alcott High School was actually played by Occidental College in nearby Eagle Rock.

“I went to Beverly. I went to the school it’s about, oddly enough, so I know exactly what it was like being the obnoxious skater kid in school,...

‘Clueless’ turns 30: Jeremy Renner’s audition, Alicia Silverstone’s life-changing fax, and other surprising stories from iconic comedy
Image
Could anyone really forget about Clueless, even three decades after its debut? As if!

Alicia Silverstone and writer-director Amy Heckerling joined costars and crew at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures screening of Clueless on Saturday, marking the 30th anniversary of the iconic film’s July 1995 release — but it was Silverstone’s costars Breckin Meyer and Elisa Donovan who shared the biggest bombshells of the night.

Meyer, who portrayed laid-back skateboarder Travis Birkenstock, was eager to work with Heckerling, having been a fan of her earlier films such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Johnny Dangerously, and Look Who’s Talking. He also recalled some of the other actors who auditioned for the role.

“All the other guys I knew — Seth Green, Jeremy Renner, and all these cats — were auditioning for it,” Meyer said.

Donovan, who played Amber, the high school rival to Silverstone’s heroine Cher Horowitz, recalled one of...

As If! Cher Horowitz With Alicia Silverstone May Return for A ‘Clueless’ Sequel Series
Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy in Clueless (1995)
Image Source: Paramount Pictures It’s shaping up to be a notable year for the iconic 1995 comedy Clueless. The film will celebrate its 30th anniversary later this summer, and as Cher Horowitz would famously say, “As If!” Since its release, Clueless has cultivated a dedicated fanbase and continues to find new audiences through home entertainment and streaming. While a Clueless television series did air from 1996 to 1999, it notably did not feature the film’s star, Alicia Silverstone, as Cher. However, nearly three decades later, Silverstone is set to return to the role of the beloved Beverly Hills high schooler. According to a report from Variety, a sequel series is in development for Peacock, brought to you by the creative minds behind hit shows like The Oc, Gossip Girl, and Dollface. Silverstone will not only star but also serve as an executive producer on the project. Alicia Silverstone’s portrayal of...

‘Crush’ – Spend Valentine’s Day With This Overlooked Teen Thriller from 2013
Image
At a quick glance, the 2013 film Crush looks to be a rehash of the Alicia Silverstone-starring thriller The Crush, except now with a teenager on the receiving end of stalking. However, despite their surface similarities, the two films ultimately diverge in story. Also sweetening that pot of low genre pleasures here is the various depictions of infatuation. For this reason, Crush is more perceptive than its familiar pitch might suggest.

Director Malik Bader and writer Sonny Mallhi combined the tangibility of horror with the psychological intrigue and criminality of thrillers, as is evident from their film’s opening scene. To show it wasn’t playing around, Crush does something that even most horror films would shy away from; it bumps off a child in the first few minutes. Murders him, in fact. The death in question follows a casual chat between young friends, whose adorable activity of “penny for your thoughts” turns deeply ugly.

Miller's Girl caused a lot of controversy due to the age gap between the stars, Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega, but it's not the first thriller to make people squirm. Thrillers are popular for a variety of reasons, from captivating the audience and putting them on edge, to causing a stir and sparking conversations. As a result, many movies in this genre get a lot of attention for better and for worse.

How Netflix’s ‘Baby Reindeer’ Humanizes the Female Stalker
Image
No one sets out to be an object of obsession.

On Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” when Martha (Jessica Gunning) enters the pub where down-and-out comedian Donny Dunn (show creator and writer Richard Gadd) works, she is looking downcast, like she’s trying to disappear. One simple cup of tea opens her up. It’s an act of kindness (or pity), but that’s all it takes for Donny to become her new fixation. Her interest in him unfolds in a montage of colorful outfits, badly applied pink lipstick and lies. She sends him tens of thousands of emails, ranging from the randy (“myy curtains r waitinfro yu they r readyy”) to the ranting (“i just had an egg”). She follows him home and sits outside his window for hours, pretends to be a hot-shot lawyer with politicians’ names in her phone and to own a penthouse in Belsize Park. Martha...

‘The Crush’ Gives Alicia Silverstone a Perfect Villain at a Disturbing Cost [We Love ’90s Horror]
Image
We all make moral decisions when we engage with art, consciously or not. For some, an element of a film’s moral makeup crosses a line and makes it reprehensible. This can be in relation to the fiction of the piece or the real world events that took place surrounding the movie. If you, Dear Reader, have such strong moral convictions and/or are sensitive to taboo topics in your movies, then The Crush is not going to be the ‘90s horror flick for you.

Because The Crush is pure sleaze on the screen and even ickier behind the scenes.

The story alone will likely draw a line in the sand for more than a few potential viewers. Journalist Nick Eliot rents a guest house from a well-to-do family and runs into (almost literally) their 14-year-old daughter, Adrian. Adrian becomes smitten with Nick and his behavior doesn’t exactly discourage...

Alicia Silverstone shares funny throwback snap of her being 'over' a photoshoot
Image
Los Angeles, May 28 (Ians) Hollywood actress Alicia Silverstone recently remembered a day when she apparently was less than impressed with having to do a photoshoot.

The ‘Clueless’ star, 46, shared a hilarious picture to Instagram, taken from a 1990s shoot that she admittedly wasn’t really feeling, reports People magazine.

She captioned the picture: “I wish I could say I was giving baddie energy here (is that what the kids say today!?) but if I’m being honest, I think I just was over this photoshoot. Who knows.”

The image featured the actress, seemingly during her teenage years, as she squatted in front of a camera and posed in front of a brick wall.

As per People, the pose was of her looking a little “over” the whole thing, as she rocked a leather jacket, combat boots and a pair of blue jeans.

Many fans pointed out in the comment section...

Cary Elwes shunned sword movies after The Princess Bride…except to work with Mel Brooks
Image
One can only imagine how many times a week someone shouts “As you wish!” at Cary Elwes. The role of Westley from The Princess Bride is easily the signature role of Cary Elwes. But he spent years avoiding any movie featuring a sword and/or a pirate, partly because of the restrictions it put on him as an actor.

“I try to look for roles that push me as an artist,” Elwes told The Independent. “Certainly after The Princess Bride I was offered a ton of medieval comedies. I can’t tell you how many scripts I got where I had to pick up a sword or was a pirate. I turned them all down.” Well, almost all of them. “The only one I was willing to accept was Robin Hood,” he said, citing 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Mel Brooks’ parody of the legendary character.

Despite the hesitance,...

The Class Critique at the Heart of ‘The Tutor’ Starring Noah Schnapp [Sex Crimes]
Image
Judging from the marketing of The Tutor, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the film for a contemporary queer update of a film like The Crush (1993). While not exclusively the purview of the 90s, a film like The Crush – in which an underage “sexpot” with a malicious streak ensnares an older man in her web of sexual intrigue – prospered in the era of Erotic Thrillers, Dtv and Vcrs.

Films in which adults are tempted into sexual relationships with minors are considered taboo for mainstream contemporary audiences. This is why the marketing of The Tutor was intriguing: the trailer suggests that rich, privileged teen Jackson (Stranger Things’ Noah Schnapp) unfairly accuses his working class tutor Ethan (Garrett Hedlund) of improper behaviour. The young man then begins to stalk and effectively ruin the life of the older man, jeopardizing his reputation and the status of his relationship with pregnant girlfriend, Annie (Victoria Justice...

Beverly’s Romance Proves The Goldbergs Struggles With Murray’s Legacy
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Goldbergs season 10, episode 15. While The Goldbergs season 10 is understandably struggling to address the exit of Jeff Garlin’s Murray, the family sitcom has so far failed to fix this issue. The Goldbergs season 10 will be the show’s final outing and this makes sense for numerous reasons. For one thing, The Goldbergs is set in the ‘80s and sees its narrator Adam Goldberg narrate his experience of growing up during the decade, so it doesn’t make sense for the series to last over a decade when its story only chronicles ten years in Adam’s life. Meanwhile, the recent departure of series star Jeff Garlin is another factor contributing to the show’s ending. Garlin played Murray in the first nine seasons of the series, and The Goldbergs season 10 struggles to cover up his absence. Murray was a pivotal part of The Goldbergs ensemble,...

The Goldbergs Wasted A Chance To Fix A Season 10 Plot Hole
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Goldbergs season 10, episode 15.

While The Goldbergs season 10 will be the show’s last outing, the family sitcom just squandered a golden opportunity to fix one canon plot hole. The existence of sitcom spinoffs can sometimes mess with the continuity of the original show. The Conners retconned Jackie’s son from Roseanne, while Young Sheldon changed the personality of Sheldon’s father George Sr until he scarcely resembled the character described in The Big Bang Theory. However, some events are too major for a show to simply ignore, such as the eventual fate of its main characters.

In this regard, The Goldbergs season 10 faces a problem. The short-lived spinoff of The Goldbergs, Schooled, only lasted two seasons. However, in that time, the ‘90s-set sitcom managed to establish that The Goldbergs supporting character Barry would eventually end up reunited with his first love interest, Schooled heroine Lainey.

Alicia Silverstone 'wasn't happy' working in Hollywood, chose to step away
Image
Alicia Silverstone had given up on acting because she “wasn’t happy” in Hollywood. The 46-year-old star launched her career appearing in 1993 movie ‘The Crush’ as well as part of videos for rock band Aerosmith and later became a household name after starring as Cher in hit teen movie ‘Clueless’ in 1995.

But, the actress has admitted she wasn’t “comfortable” with fame, reports Female First UK.

She told The Hollywood Reporter: “When ‘Clueless’ came out, it really shifted. I had been the girl from ‘Crush’, then I was the Aerosmith chick, and then, after that, I was Cher. It was very complicated and I don’t think I knew how to manage it: I didn’t have the foundation, the good tools to deal with it, I wasn’t prepared for it in any way, shape, or form. I really had no idea what was happening, and it didn’t feel comfortable.

Alicia Silverstone says Batgirl distanced her from the movie industry
Image
Alicia Silverstone was on a roll in the mid-1990s, going from an Aerosmith music video catch to showing her range as both dramatic seductress in The Crush and fashion icon in Clueless. But as the decade progressed quite quickly, Silverstone ran into a bat-shaped issue that could have cost her her career. Now, Alicia Silverstone is reflecting on her time as Batgirl and how it marked a certain end to her allure during the decade.

Following the dismal reception and Razzie Award for Worst Supporting Actress (“beating” co-star Uma Thurman), Silverstone had some other poorly received movies in Excess Baggage and Blast from the Past, resulting in stepping away from lead roles for some time. “I wasn’t happy and what I did was really extract myself a bit from my acting career and went more into my activism,” she said. “I went to Africa. to help the elephants,...

Alicia Silverstone ‘Didn’t Feel Comfortable’ With Fame After ‘Clueless’: ‘I Wasn’t Prepared For It’

“In terms of my work, I’m having nothing but fun now,” she said.

“I had a ball in Amsterdam, making a film with these amazing interesting filmmakers,” Silverstone added, referring to her upcoming film “Krazy House”, from Dutch filmmakers Steffan Haars and Flip van der Kuil.

“I’m really happy with my life,” she continued, “Just seeing Benicio Del Toro again on the set of ‘Reptiles’. We haven’t worked together for 27 years [since the Silverstone-produced ‘Excess Baggage’ in 1997]. I thought: ‘it’s been an incredible journey’.”

Of course, Silverstone has come a long way from her days in the ’90s,...

Berlin Spotlight: Why Alicia Silverstone Is “Having Nothing but Fun” in Her Second Act
Image
“I once thought that there were no second acts in American lives,” F. Scott Fitzgerald famously wrote, in his notes on The Last Tycoon. To which Cher Horowitz in Clueless would say: “Ugh, as if!”

Nearly 30 years after she spoke those iconic lines, we are witnessing the second act in the career of Alicia Silverstone.

Her Super Bowl ad for shopping platform Rakuten, where she slipped back into Cher’s yellow tartan skirt to recreate the Clueless debate scene, went viral (as did her first TikTok appearance, again as Cher, spoofing the “as if!” scene with her son Bear), returning Silverstone to the top of the pop culture conversation.

In the independent film world, Silverstone has never been hotter. With roles in The Lodge —the 2019 Sundance chiller from Goodnight Mommy directors Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz — and Jennifer Reeder’s new meta-horror film Perpetrator, which premiered in the Panorama section...

Richard Donner Didn't Want To Approach The Omen As A Horror Film
Image
If a script involves the antichrist, gruesome deaths, and one spiraling towards insanity as they question whether or not their child is evil, it's safe to conclude the film can be categorized as horror. However, director Richard Donner took a delicate approach when he asked renowned actor Gregory Peck to be a lead role in his 1976 film "The Omen," the fourth film in Donner's directorial career. Donner's filmography is filled with successful and treasured films like "The Goonies". "Scrooged", and "Lethal Weapon." While his work has comedic elements, "The Omen" was far from a feel-good film and yet Donner desperately wanted Peck on board. In order to convince the highly sought-after and acclaimed actor to accept the role, Donner took a grey-area approach and tread lightly about how the film would be categorized.

We'll Never Call It A Horror Film

In an interview with TheLipTV, Donner explains that he went...

The Daily Stream: Alicia Silverstone Delivered A Star-Turning Performance In The Sleazy, Erotic Thriller, The Crush
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "The Crush"

Where You Can Stream It: Hulu and Peacock

The Pitch: Two years before Alicia Silverstone would become teen queen royalty for her performance as Cher Horowitz in "Clueless," she made her feature film debut opposite Cary Elwes in the evocative "Lolita" thriller, "The Crush."

The 1990s were a golden era for erotic thrillers, but few were willing to tackle the taboo nature of a sexually-forward teenage girl and a grown man who certainly knew better. Elwes plays a writer named Nick Eliot who moves to a new city for a magazine job, and rents the back house of Cliff (Kurtwood Smith) and Liv Forrester (Gwynyth Walsh), whose 14-year-old daughter, Adrian (Alicia Silverstone) becomes enamored with him. Nick...

Why It Wasn’t Easy For Alicia Silverstone To Be ‘Clueless’
Image
When Alicia Silverstone started filming Clueless in late 1994, she had just turned 18, but she’d already been in high demand as an actress. Though her feature film debut had come just two years earlier with The Crush, she had already made two other feature movies and three TV movies before Clueless came along. Speaking on a panel at Steel City Con, Silverstone recalled that she loved playing the character of Cher Horowitz but, because of the workload, didn’t have as much fun making the movie as she’d hoped. (Click on the media bar below to hear Alicia Silverstone) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Alicia_Silverstone_Recalls_Making_Clueless_.mp3

Clueless is currently streaming on Paramount+ and available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

Notebook Primer: 90s Erotic Thrillers
Image
The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Body Double (1984)Born of film noir and Alfred Hitchcock, erotic thrillers began to flourish in Hollywood in the 1980s, with Dressed to Kill (1980) and Body Double (1984) from Brian DePalma, and the knock-out success of Adrian Lyne’s Fatal Attraction (1987). Although nudity in film had been acceptable for a couple of decades, mainstream American cinema didn’t quite know how to do softcore cinema the way the European’s had managed to. So it’s almost as if erotic thrillers provided a solution—sex can be shown as long as it was presented with a threat, and usually, a punishment. In the hands of crafty screenwriters, bold stars, and directors who were not bashful, the genre stands out for its ability to titillate, taking audiences on a wild ride where sex can undo marriages and careers.

Alicia Silverstone: People have been pronouncing my first name wrong!
Image
Hollywood star Alicia Silverstone says people have been pronouncing her first name wrong all along. In a social media video that she has posted, the actress not only insists her name is wrongly pronounced, but she also actually demonstrates the right way to do it.

Alicia's contention came when a fan asked for the correct pronunciation of her name. "Tell me what your name is and then tell me what people mispronounce it as," the user asked on TikTok, according to a report in femalefirst.com.

"My name is Ali-see-yuh. Ali-see-yuh. Not Alee-shya," the 44-year-old actress replied in the video.

Alicia then added a caption that read: "Just an Fyi… It's Ali-see-yuh."

10 Things About Clueless You Never Knew
Alicia Silverstone
"Ugh, As If!" After The Crush and before Batgirl, there was Clueless, the catchphrase packed 1995 high school rom-com that somehow made us all love Alicia Silverstone even more than before, with a supporting cast of future stars including Stacey Dash, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, the late Brittany Murphy, and of course, Paul Rudd. Here, we look at 10 things you never knew about Clueless.

Clueless began as a TV series.

No, we're not talking about the spinoff TV series, which ran from 1996 till 1999, with most of the cast reprising their roles, minus, of course, Alicia Silverstone. Amy Heckerling, who directed National Lampoon's European Vacation, Johnny Dangerously, Fast Times at Ridgemont High and a few episodes of its short-lived TV spinoff, initially pitched Clueless as a teen soap series in the vein of Beverly Hills, 90210. The show would have been called No Worries. Heckerling figured Jeff Spicoli was so popular because he was always so positive,...

Clueless Screening Reunites Alicia Silverstone and Breckin Meyer
Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and Brittany Murphy in Clueless (1995)
Alicia Silverstone and Breckin Meyer held a mini-reunion at a screening for Clueless at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles. The duo showed up unannounced, shocking everybody in attendance on Sunday night. Silverstone and Meyer starred in Clueless, a movie based on Jane Austen's novel Emma, a fact that Silverstone has recently revealed she did not know at the time of filming the movie in 1995. Silverstone portrayed Cher Horowitz, a well intentioned, but somewhat superficial rich girl based off of the title character Emma, while Myer portrayed Travis Birkenstock, a skater who is based on the Emma character Roger Martin.

Alicia Silverstone, now 40-years old, was 17 when the movie was made. She shared some of her stories while introducing the screening of Clueless at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. TMZ reports that Silverstone seemed to be taken aback by the audience's intense reaction to her crashing the screening. The...

Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct (1992)
‘The ’90s were ripe with sexually charged thrillers featuring scheming femme fatales. With the genre-defining classic “Basic Instinct” turning 25 this week, here are the era’s best villains. Blu-ray Review: The Crush (Scream Factory)
I had seen and enjoyed The Crush before viewing Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray release of the film, but this movie was released in 1993, which is three years before I graduated high school. This means that I was around 14 years old, which is the same age as Alicia Silverstone’s character in the movie. I’m going to assume that because of this, a lot of the creep factor was lost on me. That I know of, I haven’t seen it since it hit home video, so this would be my first time viewing it as an adult. And wow, does that age difference matter. The first time I saw it, I just liked it. It was a well made movie, I liked the actors, and the story was engaging. However, as a 38-year-old man, I found myself screaming at the TV. “No! Don’t walk down there and talk to her!
