Today, the gangster genre continues to personify the mafia, ranging from real-life mobsters in the Italian mafia to a large group of misfits in a fictional crime organization. Through the years, there have been notable films centering around the mafia, but titles like The Godfather, A Bronx Tale, and Goodfellas, fall into an exclusive category of excellence.

Ariana DeBose is in talks to star in a London revival of the classic musical Evita and the show’s original star Patti LuPone is reacting to the casting news.

If you didn’t know, Ariana won an Oscar for her work in the movie musical West Side Story and she previously was Tony-nominated for her performance in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Her Broadway credits also include Hamilton, A Bronx Tale, Pippin, and more.

Ariana hasn’t been on stage in a musical since Summer in 2018, but that could change this year.

Palminteri played 18 roles in this one-man show. Exclusive: The Broadway revival of Othello starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal has added to the cast with Andrew Burnap, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and Kimber Elayne Sprawl (Girl from the North Country).

The four will play, respectively, Cassio, Roderigo, Brabantio and Emilia. They’ll join the previously announced Washington, who plays Othello, Gyllenhaal (Iago) and Molly Osborne (Desdemona).

The Tribeca Festival started in the shadow of Sept. 11, as founders Robert De Niro, his longtime collaborator Jane Rosenthal and real estate investor Craig Hatkoff (at the time married to Rosenthal) attempted to bring commerce and culture back to Lower Manhattan.

Ariana DeBose will return as the host of the 77th Annual Tony Awards in June.

This marks the third time The West Side Story star has hosted the awards show, which will take place on June 16 at the David H. Koch Theater at the Lincoln Center. DeBose will also choreograph the opening number for the show and serve as a producer.

“I couldn’t pass up the chance to host the Tonys one more time at Lincoln Center. I’m excited to collaborate with the team to create an incredible celebration of this season’s achievements on Broadway for our community and for everyone at home,” DeBose said.

The broadcast will yet again be split into two parts, with a pre-show, entitled The Tony Awards: Act One, to air on Paramount’s free streaming service PlutoTV and feature select awards presentations. The host for the pre-show has not yet been named.

Following its strong debut last week at the Telluride Film Festival, 20th Century Studios has debuted the first trailer for Jeff Nichols’s “The Bikeriders.” The thrilling drama – which owes as much to “Goodfellas” and “A Bronx Tale” as it does to the Danny Lyon sourcebook of interviews and photography that inspired Nichols to write the script – stars Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and recent Best Actor nominee Austin Butler. It’s due out in theaters on December 1.

Filmmaker Jeff Nichols seemed positively thrilled while introducing his new film “The Bikeriders” to the Telluride Film Festival patrons on Thursday afternoon, and it is easy to see why. The project, Nichols’ first as a director since 2016’s “Loving,” is about an American biker gang in the 1960s, and the propulsive and entertaining drama owes as much to films like “Goodfellas” and “A Bronx Tale” as it does to the Danny Lyon book of photographs and interviews that inspired Nichols to write the script.

Sony's "Spider-Man less" Universe has been an interesting experiment so far. The very idea of a cinematic universe based solely on a superhero's "rogues" gallery has never been attempted before, for the obvious reason as to how awkward it might be, and the mechanics of how it would work without a primary hero, but lo and behold, Sony actually had the guts to give it a shot and, well, it's kinda, sorta working out for now. At least financially speaking. The first entry into this universe, Venom, was quite the unexpected box office hit. Los Angeles, June 18 (Ians) Hollywood star Robert De Niro, who has become a father again at 79, is hoping to bring his entire family together soon.

While attending “A Bronx Tale” screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, the “About My Father” actor has said that his six oldest children haven’t yet met his 2-month-old daughter Gia Virginia, with girlfriend Tiffany Chen, reports ‘People’ magazine.

Asked if his kids — which include Drena, 51, and son Raphael, 46, with first wife, Diahnne Abbott, twin sons Julian and Aaron, 27, with model and actress Toukie Smith and son Elliot, 24, and daughter Helen, 11, with Grace Hightower — have met the newest addition, De Niro said: “Not yet, but they will.”

He also said that his Father’s Day is fully booked, explaining that he is “just gonna spend it with the kids and all that”.

A Bronx Tale, Robert De Niro’s 1993 directorial debut, starred as the Tribeca Festival’s closing gala with the famed actor acknowledging that he never got asked to direct again following the film’s inauspicious box office debut.

“I was lucky to be able to make the movie. I made it the way I wanted to make it. I didn’t compromise at all. And I took longer to do [it] than was scheduled. And I had a lot of pressure…So I never got asked to do movies after that. That’s okay,” he said, sitting down with Chazz Palminteri in an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick after a screening of the newly remastered film.

Remick reminded him he’d also directed The Good Shepherd. “I did The Good Shepherd. But that was another uphill battle,” De Niro said.

A Bronx Tale...

Robert De Niro worked the crowd at the Beacon Theater during the Tribeca Festival closing gala on Saturday evening, which served as a 30th anniversary celebration of his directorial debut, “A Bronx Tale.”

When asked about the film’s mild box office — earning about $17 million on a $21 million production budget — the director said, “How could you not be disappointed? You do all this work for it. At the same time, I was lucky to be able to make the movie I made.”

De Niro also admitted that “I never got asked to do movies after that,” and it was an effort to get his next directorial effort, 2006’s “The Good Shepherd,” made.

“That was another uphill battle,” he said.

Following a screening of the film, De Niro, who also starred in and produced the film, discussed the project with writer and co-star Chazz Palminteri in a conversation moderated by The New Yorker’s David Remnick.

The 2023 Tribeca Festival has unveiled its winners list. The top honors went to “Cypher” for the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, “A Strange Path” for Best International Narrative Feature, and “Between the Rains” for Best Documentary Feature. The competition categories include Feature Film, Short Film, Audio Storytelling, Immersive, Games, Human/Nature, and Tribeca X.

“We take great pride in recognizing this year’s collection of diverse, trailblazing works and creators,” said Cara Cusumano, fest director and vice president of programming, said in a statement. “Today’s honorees are a compelling testament that storytelling across genres and platforms is on a vibrant and inspiring trajectory.”

The Tribeca Festival brings its unusual brand of film, music, TV, games, reunions and talks, audio and immersive storytelling to New York City this week, a festival for the city and the latest stop for the film community after a short post-Cannes break. Today’s opening may face unexpected headwinds as New York suffers a sudden, sharp deterioration of air quality due to wildfires in Canada.

The fest, which runs June 7-18, kicks off Wednesday with Kiss the Future, a documentary by Nenad Cicin-Sain produced by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Sarah Anthony. It closes with a 30th anniversary screening of A Bronx Tale, produced by and starring, respectively, Tribeca co-founders Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro. Just before the fest kickoff, NYC Mayor Eric Adams — who is attending opening night — will make an arts- and culture-related announcement with the actor.

For more than 20 years, the Tribeca Festival has given up-and-coming directors a star-studded New York City showcase. This year, though, the fest is offering well-known actors a chance to show up as directors. Michael Shannon, David Duchovny, Chelsea Peretti, Jennifer Esposito, John Slattery, and partners Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater all directed movies that will world premiere there, with Rabe and Linklater, Shannon, Peretti and Esposito making their feature directorial debuts.

The 2023 Tribeca Festival has officially unveiled its star-studded jury.

This year’s festival takes place June 7-18 and includes a range of feature narrative, documentary, and animated films. The jury for films in competition consists of Oscar winner Brendan Fraser, Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu, Zoey Deutch, Noah Centineo, Dianna Agron, Zazie Beetz, Chloë Grace Moretz, Katie Siegel, Nina Dobrev, Piper Perabo, Andrew Ahn, Mark Duplass, Stephen Kay, and Clea DuVall, plus Chance the Rapper and Jeremy O. Harris.

The jury will select storytellers and artists from 15 different competition categories, as well as present the Nora Ephron Award.

Robert De Niro is going from Cannes to Tribeca, as the world-renowned actor prepares to kick off the 22nd edition of the film festival he co-founded in 2001 with Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. It runs from June 7 to 18 across New York City.

De Niro recently appeared at Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” in which he stars opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. The Oscar-winning actor said there were conversations about premiering the Western crime epic at Tribeca, but that idea never materialized.

“We did talk about it a little bit, but it was always Cannes,” De Niro told Variety. “There was talk about whether it should go in competition or out of competition. And we decided out of competition. It made more sense.”
