In today’s Global Bulletin, the English Premier League renews rights deals for three years; Stephen Graham-starrer “Boiling Point” sells wide; Nent Group sets terrorism drama “Red Election”; Endeavor Content strengthens management team; and Alchimie and All3Media International launch SVOD channel Inside Outside in the U.S.

The English Premier League soccer championship has agreed a proposal for a three-year renewal of U.K. live and non-live broadcast agreements with Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video and BBC Sport.

The rights deal worth £5 billion ($7 billion) was agreed in 2018 and will now be rolled over from 2022-2025.

This follows approval in principle for the renewal from the U.K. government after a period of consideration where the League cited the damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Enabled by an exclusion order from the government, the League will conclude the renewals without the normal broadcast rights tender process.

A UK cinema overlooking the beach where a key scene in Joe Wright’s Atonement was filmed is looking for a new operator to take over once a £10m rebuild of the venue is complete.

The Regent Cinema, which has been a cultural venue in Redcar, North Yorkshire for over 140 years, is currently being rebuilt by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council as a three-screen venue, following the demolition of the previous building in 2020.

Philip Barantini’s UK drama Boiling Point, starring Stephen Graham, has secured distribution in key global territories through Paris-based sales agent Charades.

Vertigo Releasing has acquired UK and Ireland rights to the feature, which was shot in one take, and plans to release the film theatrically later in 2021.

Further deals have been closed for France (UFO), Spain (Filmin), Canada (Mongrel), Portugal (Cinemundo), Lebanon and Gulf (Empire), Australia and New Zealand (Rialto), and Japan (Cetera). A US deal is understood to be under negotiation.

The Paley Center for Media will celebrate Black History Month with “A Salute to Black Achievements in Television presented by Citi” beginning Feb. 1. The annual celebration spotlights significant contributions from Black icons, innovators and leaders in media and entertainment. Programming includes “For Life in Conversation with Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson” Feb. 1 at 8 p.m.; “Queen Sugar” exclusives Feb. 13-15; a special family preview screening of Netflix’s “Family Reunion” on Feb. 27, and 100th anniversary spotlights of The Negro Leagues and Black women in government and politics on TV on Feb. 28. Stephen Odubola, star of London gang drama Blue Story, and Rise Of The Footsoldier’s Craig Fairbrass have signed to star in Ross McCalll’s UK prison drama Ire which starts shooting tomorrow (September 19).

The film is the directorial debut of actor McCall, whose credits include White Collar, and will also star Jason Flemyng and Ulrich Thomsen.

The story centres on an imprisoned, violent criminal (Fairbrass) whose institutionalised routine is disrupted when his estranged daughter requests to meet her father for the first time and a young man (Odubola) serving his first sentence is made his cell mate.

Stephen Odubola, star of Rapman’s acclaimed “Blue Story,” will headline prison drama “Ire,” alongside Craig Fairbrass (“Villain”), Jason Flemyng (“Pennyworth”) and Ulrich Thomsen (“Banshee”).

The film, which marks the directorial debut of actor Ross McCall (“About Us”), follows the prison life of an institutionalized criminal incarcerated for murdering his wife. His routine life is disrupted when his estranged daughter asks to meet him, and further complicated when a 19-year-old serving his first sentence in a maximum-security prison is placed inside as his cell mate.

Samahoma Media Advisors has negotiated financing for the film from Insight Media Fund. The Fund previously provided completion money for “Boiling Point,” Philip Barantini’s one-take feature film of his own short, by U.K. outfits Ascendant Films and Burton Fox Films alongside star Stephen Graham’s Matriarch Productions, in association with Bromantics and Three Little Birds Pictures. In the exclusive clip from Villain, we see a bloodbath unfold before our eyes. A tense argument suddenly turns violent, with one man left standing, or in this case, laying on the ground trying to catch his breath. The British Film Institute (BFI) is launching a major six-month season, Japan 2020, on BFI Player from 11 May, with new collections including Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, independent, cult, anime, 21st century and J-Horror.

This major season will spotlight filmmakers who have inspired admiration and fascination around the world. It will start with Akira Kurosawa, and over the coming months it’ll present films from the Golden Age, a focus on Yasujiro Ozu, new wave rebels, the visionary creations of anime, the netherworlds of J-horror, and so much more from archive rarities to contemporary works and cult classics.

New online collections will be released each month, and is expected to be presented at BFI Southbank and cinemas nationwide later this year.

Even though “Sonatine” was only his fourth film as a director, for many fans and critics it is still one of the best by Takeshi Kitano and arguably an important milestone in his career as it received much international attention, thanks to directors like Quentin Tarantino, whose production company decided to release “Sonatine” as one of their first titles for American audiences. However, for Kitano himself, the importance of this film is much more personal as it is artistic, evident in the title of the movie itself, which himself explains as an indicator that he finally was able to use the various devices and means within the medium on a basic level, similar to a student of the piano practicing basic pieces. All modesty aside, “Sonatine” is quite an impressive movie which not only continues its director’s themes of deconstruction, but also the idea of how beauty is connected to death.

After he had given his debut as director in “Violent Cop”, Takeshi Kitano obviously found a liking to having more control over a project. His second feature film “Boiling Point” is therefore an important creative step for him as he not only acts and directs, but also wrote the script and even collaborated with Toshio Taniguchi on the editing of the final film, making this one the first “complete” Kitano film in his body of work. The outcome of his effort is a film which is very difficult to categorize, which removes itself even further from notions like genre and other formal concepts such as the idea of the protagonist. However, within the context of his body of work, “Boiling Point” sets the foundation to the overall deconstruction of these aforementioned aspects and introduces the sort of deadpan humor as well as the notion of melancholia which would become trademarks...

Exclusive: Vertigo Releasing has picked up the Craig Fairbrass-starring thriller Villain for UK and Ireland release.

Pic is the directing debut of Philip Barantini, whose short Boiling Point starring Stephen Graham was recently nominated for a Bifa. Barantini also has acting credits including Chernobyl, Humans and Band Of Brothers.

Villain follows Eddie Franks, a man who is released from prison after serving a 10 year sentence and attempts to help his family by reconnecting with his daughter and clearing is brother’s debt. Despite his best efforts, he finds himself drawn back into a life of crime, with devastating consequences. Bart Ruspoli produced the feature.

Also starring are Robert Glenister (Live By Night), George Russo (I Am Soldier) and Izuka Hoyle (Mary Queen of Scots).

The deal was negotiated by Vertigo Releasing’s Ed Caffrey and Ddi’s Mark Padilla on behalf of the filmmakers.

Dev Patel is up for best actor for his starring role in “The Personal History of David Copperfield,” and his co-stars, Tilda Swinton and Hugh Laurie, compete in their respective supporting categories.

Exclusive: Tin Star and The Hateful Eight star Tim Roth is to exec produce British dance feature Hilda. The actor is behind the film, which is produced by Odds On Productions and has its world premiere at next week’s Raindance Film Festival.

Film Movement has acquired North American rights to “Outrage Coda,” Takeshi Kitano’s 18th directorial outing and the final installment in his “Outrage” crime trilogy.

“Outrage Coda” is being represented in international markets by Hengameh Panahi’s Celluloid Dreams.

Set five years after surviving the all-out war between the Sanno and Hanabishi crime families, “Outrage Coda” follows former yakuza boss Otomo, who now works in South Korea for Mr. Chang, a renowned fixer whose influence extends into Japan.

Film Movement previously handled Kitano’s “Violent Cop,” “Boiling Point” and “Hana-Bi.” The U.S. company is planning to give “Outrage Coda” a limited theatrical and home entertainment release later this year.

“Kitano is one of the most unique and accomplished filmmakers of his generation,” said president of Film Movement Michael Rosenberg, who announced the deal today with Charlotte Mickie, Celluloid Dreams’s VP.

Harris (Some Call It Loving, 1973; Fast-Walking, 1982) has agreed to meet me for brunch at Coogie’s Cafe. Coogie’s is exactly the sort of unassuming American diner where girls in pink velvet jackets and shimmery silver skirts go to blend in with the Pepto-Bismol-colored booths. There are a pair of flat screen TVs on the wall, which are mercifully muted. A radio in some far-off corner of the kitchen can be heard playing inoffensive pop tunes of yesteryear. It is also the sort of quiet place where someone like Harris is well-known, well-liked, and referred to as “Mr. James” by the entire waitstaff. The impression is one of polite reverence and earned familiarity, built up over time and solidified through an appreciation of his impressive filmography, as well as his continued business.

The King Baggot Tribute will take place Wednesday September 28th at 7pm at Lee Auditorium inside the Missouri History Museum (Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri). The King Baggot Tribute is this Friday, November 14th at 7pm at Webster University’s Winifred Moore Auditorium. The cinephile's gaze has long appreciated the smaller, modest beauties of old films. (Not even "authored" films: I mean the beauties of the chaff as well as the wheat.) Yet the disposable, omnipresent, generic films of our more recent past are slowly seeping into historical perspective as well. What if a person were given a copy of The American Cinema and a discard box of VHS tapes, and simply told to work things out from there? What could we find by looking at these films and according their significant elements their tiny, absent fanfare?

Boiling Point is not a film with high production value, pretty faces or showy effects. Boiling Point is at the heart of what the future of great filmmaking is to be, which is exactly the place it has been for some time now… in the hands of passionate indie filmmakers, not held back by a lack of budget or resources. Boiling Point is an indie film, not without it’s flaws, but rich with unrefined morsels of creative talent just waiting to be polished out from within rigid exterior.

Metronome Productions, a student film company based around Edge Hill University, may not be on the average movie watchers’ map, but the drive with which they are attempting to expose their films to the public is what convinced me to have a look at the film, and ultimately to write this review.

Aragon's filmography is super odd. Or maybe not. In many professions if you do good work, your career very gradually swells but there's plenty of detours and error along the way as you feel your way up the ladder. I guess it just feels odd in the context of the movies. When we think of leading players in Hollywood don't we tend to think of them in terms of overnight sensations, has beens, or stars that have always been and will always be with us and seem to have arrived fully formed (Streep, Pacino. That type)?

Viggo fits none of those categories but he's very much a leading actor.

An ailing Dennis Hopper shocked fans when he turned up to unveil his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday - he was sporting bandages on his head and hand.

The Easy Rider star is suffering from terminal prostate cancer and reportedly has just weeks to live, but he made an appearance outside the Egyptian Theatre, where he was honoured with the 2,403rd star on Hollywood Boulevard.

Viggo Mortensen, Hopper's co-star in The Indian Runner (1991) and Boiling Point (1993), was on hand to pay tribute to the movie legend, who also posed with pal Jack Nicholson.

But it was Hopper's new injuries which drew the most attention - the actor reveals he fell outside his home after confusing a paparazzo for a friend.

He says, "I thought I recognised the voice, so I kept walking and turned around but I didn't see the little ridgeline in the road and I took a terrible fall because I have no muscle.

"So I fell directly on my face, and I had my glasses in my hand. I got pretty screwed up."

Hopper, 73, has been battling other personal issues on top of his health problems - he filed for divorce from his wife Victoria Duffy in January and received a restraining order against her in February, after his doctor insisted her presence in the marital home was "hampering his cancer care".

As part of its plan to expand in the U.S., Endemol has tapped Philippe Maigret as evp of acquisitions in North America. In his new role, Maigret will be responsible for expanding the format specialist's portfolio on this side of the Atlantic, with a focus on scripted shows. This will include developing distribution, financing and co-production partnerships with U.S. producers in collaboration with Endemol USA, Endemol Worldwide Distribution and Endemol's global format operation.

Maigret was formerly senior vp of business strategy and development at Disney ABC Espn International where he was responsible for expanding the business globally and also led the Mouse House's move into the international production of reality and scripted TV formats. TV One, a channel that targets black viewers, said Monday that it has signed a multiyear agreement with Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution to acquire rights to a slew of theatrical titles and off-network series, including UPN's All of Us and Eve. The deal, which marks the biggest programming acquisition for the network in its two-year history, also includes rights to such series as Living Single, For Your Love, Hangin' With Mr. Cooper, The Parent 'Hood, Wanda at Large, All About the Andersons, Fastlane and A Man Called Hawk as well as recent episodes of Showtime at the Apollo. Through the agreement, TV One also is renewing rights to air the comedies Roc and Martin. In addition, TV One has snapped up rights to a range of movie titles, including windows on such films as The Color Purple, Malcolm X, Lean on Me, New Jack City, Purple Rain, Shaft and Superfly. Other movies in the deal include Round Midnight, Rosewood, Boiling Point, Uptown Saturday Night, Strictly Business, Cabin in the Sky, Krush Groove and Sparkle.
