Sailor Moon has a diverse cast of characters, and many of them have friends and romances. Some of them have such romantic chemistry that fans hoped to see them together. Even if they never ended up in an official pairing, that doesn't stop the audience from debating what could have been on fan forums or imaging a happily ever after for them in fan fiction.
Many of the fan favorite, non-canon pairings do have merit as potential couples. Either they were given extra scenes together in the original anime, which had many extra filler arcs, or it seemed like Naoko Takeuchi might have considered pairing them together but then didn't follow through. Nevertheless, many fanon couples make such sense that surely they could have stood the test of time.

Sailor Moon fans are receiving an unfortunate update on what seemed like a promising release this February. The new home media release of the original anime film trilogy by Viz Media reportedly isn’t the authentic experience initially promised by the company.
In December 2024, a new Sailor Moon Blu-ray set listing became public online. This home media set was a collection of the first three Sailor Moon anime movies based on the first TV series from the 1990s. Sailor Moon R: The Movie, Sailor Moon S: The Movie and Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie would be available together on a single disc instead of separately, for the retail price of $29.98. Among the details listed on the back of the cover was the mention of the films being available to view at a "4:3 full screen" aspect ratio -- previously not available in the individual releases by Viz Media in 2018, nor...

Sailor Moon is five seasons long, and every new story arc introduces a different team of villains, allies, awakened heroes, and memorable minor characters. Many hero and villain characters have become synonymous with the series. Sailor Moon herself is one of the most recognizable characters in anime.
With so much epic storytelling and a large cast of characters, some don't get as much attention as they should. Naoko Takeuchi put so much thought into her characters and designed a setting so lush that audiences love characters, even if they don't end up playing into the overall plot very much. Even the creators of the 1990s anime made some stellar minor characters that didn't stem from the manga.

For anime movies made in the 90s, the Sailor Moon movie trilogy still has a magic that makes them stand out all on their own. Unlike many anime tie-ins, these feature-length films take viewers on some seriously emotional journeys filled with moments that stick with fans long after the credits roll. They don’t just expand the Sailor Guardians’ storylines; they actually make them better.
What makes these movies so good is how well they can bring raw, heartfelt emotion throughout their runtime. Fans, whether they're going back in for a rewatch or watching for the first time, need to make sure they have some tissues on hand when it comes to the Sailor Moon movies' emotional moments.

Shojo anime are traditionally marketed toward a young female audience, but it goes without saying the genre's audience far exceeds its demographic. Althoug "shojo anime" and "shojo manga" are primarily a marketing demographic, these series and movies do tend to share more than a few storytelling conventions. Sailor Moon codified and utilizes severanl shojo anime tropes, especially in its first movie, Sailor Moon R: The Movie, The Promise of the Rose.
Shojo anime can be broken down into many related subgenres, like contemporary romance, romantic comedies, high fantasy, and magical girl anime ala Sailor Moon. Shojo anime are well known for certain tropes, some of which are tongue-in-cheek – like yandere love interests. Fan-favorite motifs, like first love romance and title cards with floating rose petals, never seem to get old, either, as any Sailor Moon fan can attest to.

Long-running anime are bound to get movies expanding the story, and Sailor Moon, written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi, is no exception to this. The original 90s anime series had a total of three movies made in between its seasons, and all of them have some great fights.
All three Sailor Moon movies originally aired between 1993 and 1995. Just like most anime of this era, these films are packed with high-quality animation, amazing action and plenty of great story setup for these epic encounters. New fans interested in watching these movies for the first time or older viewers wanting to rewatch these classic movies won't be disappointed by these clashes between good and evil.

The 1990s saw the skyrocketing popularity of Sailor Moon in the Western market. With the first season of Sailor Moon running from March 1992 through February 1993, Usagis story transfixed Western audiences. From her transformation to Sailor Moon, battles with the Sailor Guardians against the evil forces, and her dramatic love story with the Prince-Endymion-reincarnated Mamoru Chiba, Usagi tale made for a compelling narrative, especially for younger viewers.
Its popularity led to Sailor Moon movies to complement and expand upon the lore and adventures, doubling down on the massive success of the franchise. Three feature length movies were released during the 1990s, connected directly to the original anime series. When the Sailor Moon anime ended in 1997, its popularity never waned. This no doubt fueled the decision to green-light Sailor Moon Crystal, a new retelling of Sailor Moons story. Aligning more accurately with the original manga, the series cut back on the number...

Aside from the original manga and anime adaptations, there are also several animated movies in the Sailor Moon franchise. Some of these movies, such as Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos, are part of the main storyline, and adapted from the manga. Other movies, such as Sailor Moon R: The Movie, appear to be original stories that give extra narrative to the cast.
In any piece of Sailor Moon media, there will always be fantastic displays of magical attacks. Some skills are ones that must be done alone and can even symbolize growth, such as Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss, which appears as Sailor Moon becomes Eternal Sailor Moon. Others must be performed as a group, such as Sailor Planet Power Meditation, a testament to the bond the Sailor Senshi possess.

Sailor Moon, one of the most famous anime franchises worldwide, is regarded as both an exciting magical girl journey and a renowned tale about love in all of its forms. Teenager Usagi Tsukino is surprised to have her average life turned upside-down after the arrival of the cosmic cat Luna, who informs her that she is Sailor Moon, a hero meant to save the world and restore a lost kingdom. In time, Sailor Moon would grow not only as a fighter but as a person, alongside her fellow Sailor Guardians.
For both the original anime and the Sailor Moon Crystal adaptation, several movies were made. Each film brings high stakes and powerful foes that the heroes must face, each with their own goals and backstories; sometimes, the Sailor Senshi must fight their fellow Senshi in order to secure the galaxy. Various discussions are made on which villains are the most powerful in the franchise,...

Sailor Moon is an epic magical girl anime with plenty of monster-of-the-week skirmishes, magical transformations, and devastating battles. Romance is the main engine of the story, though. It's Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion's forbidden love affair that launches the events of the series, and their love is a huge part of Usagi Tsukino's motivation.
Romance isn't only for the heroes in Sailor Moon, though. Many of the villains have their own love affairs. Some of the villain romances have redemptive qualities for the characters, and some of the romances are quite strange and even cruel. Either way, the stakes are high for a villain in love.

Sailor Moon is one of anime's most popular and instantly recognizable franchises. The adventures of Usagi Tsukino and her friends have delighted audiences ever since the manga debuted in the pages of Nakayoshi magazine in 1991. As is the norm for popular manga series, it wouldn't be long until the franchise jumped to anime, with Toei Animation launching its adaptation the following year.
This anime made the franchise even more popular. As is the norm for the industry, Sailor Moon's popularity led to Usagi and her friends making their way to the silver screen several times during the show's run. Today, seven different Sailor Moon movies exist. These films cover everything from high-budget manga adaptions to bonus side stories. But what do new fans need to know about them?

The final two-part film in the Sailor Moon reboot series, Sailor Moon Cosmos is now available on Netflix and its high-quality production and storytelling beg for more Sailor Moon adaptations. The purpose of the Sailor Moon Crystal series is to provide a modernized anime adaptation that is truer to Naoko Takeuchi's manga. While the original trilogy of Sailor Moon films are not all adaptations of storylines from the manga, they are an easy avenue to continue creating within the Crystal universe.
Debuting in 2015, Sailor Moon Crystal tells the story of Usagi Tsukino, an immature schoolgirl by day, and the titular hero fighting for love and justice by night. The first three seasons of Crystal vary in quality, but the two-part films, Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Cosmos, are polished, well-paced, and faithful to the source material.
