Hello Daily Dead family! We were taking a little break for various summer trips, but it’s time to get back into the saddle and we’ve got a groovy flick to get things started again. Honestly I’m not sure why it’s taken us so long to visit the Evil Dead universe, but we’re going to properly fix that with a viewing of 1992’s Army of Darkness. We’ll be breaking out the boom sticks this Wednesday July 23rd at 8pm Eastern.
We get Bruce Campbell at his smarmiest and some of my favorite splatstick ever put to celluloid (I defy you to watch Campbell get into a Three Stooges-style fight with a bunch of skeletons without smiling). As usual, I’ll have some of the Daily Dead gang with me to giggle along, so head to DailyDeadTwitch to join in the fun, and we hope to see you there!

Movies that purposefully try to be campy can be a risky endeavor, often falling more in the realm of cringy than charming. Not without its flaws but incredibly enjoyable, William Bagley’s Hold the Fort is a robust horror-comedy that brings plenty of laughs and a satisfying amount of gory fun — a worthy homage to the cult classics it references.
Hold the Fort Review
Hold the Fort follows a couple who think they have found an idyllic home in a quiet suburban community, only to discover that once a year, a bevy of supernatural monsters use a portal directly into their neighborhood to invade the Earth. What follows is an action-packed night of defending their new home from otherworldly monsters.
For many audience members, their enjoyment of Hold the Fort will live or die depending on how much they can get on the film’s comedic wavelength. Much of the...

Director Sam Raimi may be known for movies like Army of Darkness and the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, andDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but in 1995, he directed a revenge western that, while it was a box office flop, is now making its way up the global streaming charts. The Quick and the Dead is the No. 7 most-streamed movie on Netflix, as of July 9, per FlixPatrol.
The film, which starred Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Roberts Blossom (Home Alone), and Gary Sinise, is ahead of About My Father, Thug Life, and The Royal Hotel on the global Top 10 Netflix chart. The Quick and the Dead was written by Simon Moore (Traffic) and included contributions from Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), although he was not credited.

When the horror comedy “M3GAN” became a hit in early 2023 and turned its killer doll title character into an icon, director Gerard Johnstone — who, throughout production, feared he was “making a career-ending goofy puppet movie” — felt an instant sense of liberation. “As restrained as the first film was, there was nothing restrained about the reaction of the fans,” Johnstone told IndieWire during a recent interview.
That gave Johnstone the justification he needed to take a big risk with “M3GAN 2.0” and flip the story on its head, not only turning M3gan into the protagonist, but making a film in an entirely different genre from the original — action rather than horror.
This time around, M3gan joins forces with her nemesis from the first film, Allison Williams’ Gemma, to take on an artificial intelligence-fuled robot named Amelia who’s out to wipe out the human race. The tone? Closer to “Terminator 2” than “Child’s Play.

A city girl’s romantic weekend at a lakeside cabin in bayou country becomes a nightmare of squalor, depravity, and slaughter with a bloodthirsty maniac on the loose in Scum of the Earth.

Danny Elfman will reunite with Sam Raimi to compose the score for the survival thriller Send Help.
“I’m just finishing a score for Gus Van Sant and a really fun thriller,” the composer told journalist Andrew Freund. “And then I start another thriller with Sam Raimi that they just finished shooting in Australia called Send Help.”
The two icons of cinema previously collaborated on Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Oz the Great and Powerful, A Simple Plan, Darkman, and the Army of Darkness theme. Elfman also cameoed in Raimi’s The Gift.
Send Help lands in theaters on January 30, 2026 from 20th Century Studios.
It follows two colleagues who become stranded on a deserted island after surviving a plane crash. They must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it is a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) in 2023, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. Last year, they proved their commitment to this idea by hiring Sébastien Vaniček, who made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested, to write and direct a new installment in the franchise. A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that Dune: Part Two‘s Souheila Yacoub, a Swiss former rhythmic gymnast who won the Miss Suisse Romande beauty pageant before getting her acting career started, will be starring in Vaniček’s film, and now Deadline has broken the news that...

There’s an argument to be made that Scream 2 is better than the first. With the rules firmly established, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson were more successfully equipped to expand the scope of their meta-horror franchise. The original is always going to be the original, but Scream 2 is arguably funnier, scarier, gorier, and just generally more fun. And that’s rare for a sequel, and even rarer for a horror sequel.
For every Friday the 13th: Part 2 (unquestionably better than the first), there’s a The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2 or Exorcist II: The Heretic. The former sequel is better than the latter, though I’m not sure even those films’ most ardent fans would make the argument that the follow-up is better than what started it all. Not everything can be Smile 2, Ok?
But, what if science could help us figure out what the best horror sequels are,...

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have said that they’d rather die along with their entire families than make another puppet movie like Team America: World Police. But, as Bruce Campbell knows well, the dead aren’t always free from puppetry.
In 2004, the creators of South Park released their feature-length satire of American politics and over-the-top action movies performed entirely by a massive cast of custom-made marionettes. Team America: World Police won no awards, broke no box office records and, thankfully for Parker and Stone, spawned no sequels, but the hilarious, unique and preposterously profane action-comedy-musical quickly became a cult-classic — and, not to mention, it contains some of the finest, catchiest and filthiest show tunes that Parker and Stone ever performed.
Team America: World Police also happened to be the single most grueling and labor-intensive feature film that any of the many esteemed and experienced artists involved in its hellish production ever experienced.

From the people who brought you “The Walking Dead,” Final Destination and Super Troopers (how’s that for a wildly unexpected pairing?!) comes The Slashin’ of the Christ, a mysterious upcoming horror project that has popped up on the Bloody Disgusting radar this week.
The project has come to our attention after a series of cryptic teases from the social media accounts for the band Ice Nine Kills, and we’ve been able to deduce that Ink frontman Spencer Charnas wrote the script for The Slashin’ of the Christ alongside Paul Soter (Super Troopers).
Paul Soter, a member of the popular Broken Lizard comedy group, wrote films including Super Troopers, Beerfest, and the slasher comedy Club Dread, and he’ll be returning to the horror arena with the upcoming film The Slashin’ of the Christ. Also on board this mysterious film? Filmmaker, makeup FX master and “The Walking Dead” executive producer Greg Nicotero!

Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead has a gripping poster, featuring a beautiful girl rising out of an open grave on a dark, foggy night with a rickety wooden cross behind her. A hairy, monstrous arm is wrapped around her neck, pulling her back into the open grave, as her arm beseeches for help that will never come. There’s just one problem with the poster—that mysterious girl and that scene Aren’T in the film.
Meet Bridget Hoffman, the girl who is (and isn’t) in Sam Raimi’s classic Evil Dead franchise!
“Yes, that’s me,” actress Bridget Hoffman smiles, playfully recreating her pose, with her right hand in the air and her left arm wrapped around her own neck.

I’m a sucker for a good vampire film, whether it features a sexy vampire like Bram Stoker’s Dracula or a nasty one like 30 Days of Night. But one of my personal favorite tales about bloodsuckers is an underrated 2010 release by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig titled Daybreakers. Boasting an all-star cast and an interesting twist on vampire lore, it didn’t make waves upon initial release. And yet, I still find myself banging the proverbial drum for this film, especially today, because the movie is now streaming for free on Vizio WatchFree+.
Daybreakers takes place in 2019 (ten years in the future upon the film’s initial release) where a plague has transformed a majority of the human population into vampires. But without any humans from which to feed, the vampires are now facing a food crisis. Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a hematologist working on creating a blood substitute to save humanity.

Bubba Ho-Tep is a silly good time. It’s an unorthodox take on genre cinema that features a great showing from Bruce Campbell as an aging, undead Elvis. I like the film (and Campbell) so much that I once dedicated an installment of the Dread Central newsletter, The Harbinger, to the Don Coscarelli-directed effort. Though the picture has its fans, I think it’s actually a bit underrated. However, the feature has at least one high-profile fan. During a recent look at Mike Flanagan’s Letterbox profile, I learned that the Absentia director is also a die-hard Bubba Ho-Tep enthusiast.
That’s right; Flanagan added the flick to a Letterboxd list chronicling his favorite horror movies. Nice work, Mike.
The setup for this Mike Flanagan-approved horror-comedy goes like this:

Jack Lilley, the stunt performer and actor who made a home for himself on Little House on the Prairie by working on every one of the beloved NBC drama’s nine seasons, has died. He was 91.
Lilley had Alzheimer’s disease and died Wednesday at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, his granddaughter Savanah Lilley told The Signal, a news outlet in Santa Clarita.
In Blazing Saddles (1974), Lilley played one of the outlaws who loots the town of Rock Ridge, and in one scene, he and his horse slide into a pool of mud and are submerged. It was an accident, but director Mel Brooks liked it so much, he kept it in the movie.

Jack Lilley, whose showbiz career spanned more than seven decades as an actor, stuntman, animal coordinator and other roles and included Little House on the Prairie, Blazing Saddles, John Ford films and TV Westerns, has died. He was 91. His family posted the news on Instagram but did not provide a date or cause of death.

The horror genre possibly harbors the most valuable props you can think of. Freddy's glove, Leatherface's chainsaw and, why not, the cup used by the lady in Get Out to hypnotize Chris. Most horror movies have a specific object that fans would like to own. And as it turns out, you can actually buy one of horror's most precious objects:Evil Dead's Necronomicon, a.k.a. the Book of the Dead, which is activated upon reciting some incantations to summon the visciously playful and wicked demons from Sam Raimi's franchise.

Director Sam Raimi and actor Bruce Campbell have worked on four "Evil Dead" film and TV projects together. I needn't reiterate "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn," as the cultists know them well. However, something happened after Raimi and Campbell made "Army of Darkness" in 1992, completing Ash's arc in the process. That film was distributed by Universal, which positioned it to gain a crossover audience. Sadly, though, it didn't do well at the box office, but became a massive cult hit. It was deeply beloved by many, eventually attaining the same canonized status as its immediate forebear.
In his autobiography "If Chins Could Kill," Campbell laid out the difference between a "cult film" and a "blockbuster." A blockbuster is a million people seeing a film 10 times, and a cult film is 10 people seeing a film a million times.

One can indeed watch each installment in Sam Raimi's celebrated "Evil Dead" franchise in the order of their release, but it might not help keep the continuity clear. The actual narrative throughline of the "Evil Dead" movies is a little hazy throughout, and each new movie might serve as a soft reboot of the one that came before it. The ending of one movie doesn't clearly link to the next, and the main character of Ash (Bruce Campbell) doesn't seem to learn or grow from his experiences. Indeed, Ash only appears to get dumber and more selfish with every outing. The already-weak continuity then becomes especially messy when one starts factoring in director's edits and alternate endings that only sort of count toward the franchise's central canon. One can also, if they were ambitious, include short films that Sam Raimi made when he was a teenager. He is an iconoclast.

With his recent passing at age 95, Gene Hackman left behind a legacy few other actors could match. Despite retiring over 20 years ago, Hackman still loomed large in American movie culture, a testament to his commanding screen presence and deep wells of humanity. His versatility meant that he could comfortably slot into any number of genres, and the '90s saw him step effortlessly into a run of westerns, beginning in 1992 with his Oscar-winning turn as a corrupt sheriff in Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven.
A few years later in 1995, Hackman took on another villainous western role in Sam Raimi's amped-up genre homage The Quick and the Dead, which recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. While the film flopped pretty hard upon release, it's come to be considered an underrated cult classic on the strength of Raimi's direction and strong performances from Hackman, Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, and a 20-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio.

The big winner of Toy Fair 2025 on the horror front may very well be Trick or Treat Studios, who brought some big time surprises to the convention floor this morning.
Upcoming licensed toys from Trick or Treat Studios include Maniac Cop, Hellraiser, Leprechaun, Terrifier 2, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, and Army of Darkness!
The most surprising reveal has to be the Maniac Cop action figure, which is headed our way in 2026. This marks the first officially licensed Maniac Cop figure we have ever seen.
Trick or Treat’s Hellraiser wave, meanwhile, will include Pinhead, Chatterer, Butterball, and Female Cenobite, with unpainted prototypes on display at Toy Fair this weekend.
And yes, we’re even getting a Warwick Davis Leprechaun figure from Trick or Treat Studios, along with a wave of toys based on George A. Romero’s zombie classic Day of the Dead.

Wherever Guillermo del Toro's "Hellboy" movies didn't quite match the original comics, del Toro confidently made the material his own. Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) all look like they stepped straight off the pages of Mike Mignola's original comics. Mignola wrote these three fantastical heroes like ordinary working stiffs working an extraordinary job, while the movie versions of these B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) employees are less stoic, more romantic, and softhearted.
Changes in characterization aside, Perlman is perfectly cast as Hellboy and he's maintained he'd only come back to the franchise if del Toro did too. Yet del Toro's trilogy-wrapping "Hellboy III" has been unfortunately left for dead, cast into development hell in a most cruel twist of fate.

Another cool bit of programming is the inclusion of the original Evil Dead from Sam Raimi and Fede Alvarez's contemporary remake on March 15th. For subscribers in the U.S. Raimi's sequel, the horror comedy Army of Darkness also begins streaming on that day. What's that? You want century-old horror flicks to watch? Keep your...

Dean DeBlois is getting ready to show off footage from his live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon.” But he wants to explain some things first.
The filmmaker — an animation legend who made “Lilo & Stitch” and the original “How to Train Your Dragon” with Chris Sanders and directed two more “How to Train Your Dragon” installments for DreamWorks Animation on his own — had flirted with live-action filmmaking before. He had sold a number of spec scripts, including “Sightings,” which would have beaten “Stranger Things” to the Spielbergian punch by a good decade. But none of those materialized. Now, with “How to Train Your Dragon” (2025), he finally has his shot.
“I myself am not a huge fan of the animation-to-live-action trend,” DeBlois admitted to TheWrap from an edit bay on the Universal Studios lot. “Universal wanted to revisit this story. It’s like, ‘We’re going to do it. Let...

One of the funniest scenes in cult classic Army of Darkness features Bruce Campbell’s Ash Williams arriving at the Necronomicon’s location, only to forget the last word of the phrase needed that will allow him to pick it up safely. So he mumbles, he coughs, and just generally mispronounces it altogether. That phrase is “Klaatu barada nikto,” and if it sounds familiar, it should. "Klaatu barada nikto" was first spoken on film in the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still.

When it comes to slasher films, the iconography of the killer is often more important than the story. As long as fans are being given the chance to watch Michael Myers show up in his white-painted Captain Kirk finest to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, no one cares about trying to make sense of the the nonsensical and convoluted timeline of the "Halloween" franchise. Even people who have never watched a horror movie in their life could probably identify Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" in his iconic hockey mask, or clock Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" even without his titular weapon. The look of a slasher villain should strike fear into the hearts of the audience ... but it should also be memorable enough to be marketable.

Founded in 2004, the comic book publishing company Dynamite Entertainment got started with a comic book continuation of Sam Raimi’s 1992 horror comedy classic Army of Darkness. Soon after, they started publishing a book that starred the popular sword-and-sorcery character Red Sonja. Last weekend, we celebrated 10 years of fears at the 10th annual Tampa Bay Screams horror convention. Our afternoon was spent at the Occ Roadhouse and Museum in Clearwater, Florida. Despite the rainy, chilly, weather the pavilion hosting the dealer’s dungeon, panel stage, and film festival was lively and attendees were in good spirits.
While last year’s convention showed the resilience of the Tampa Bay horror communities in the face of seemingly endless budget cuts, this year radiated a sense of confidence and air of “we aren’t going anywhere.” After the Tampa Bay area was hit with two devastating hurricanes in late 2024, events like this are more important than ever as they bolster relationships and support systems in the arts community.

Men in suits of armor. Courtly romance. Raging bouts of plague and pillaging. All these and more are the hallmarks of a good old-fashioned medieval movie. So many of our most enduring legends have their start in the Middle Ages, from King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table to Robin Hood, and for good reason -- their classic tales of adventure and noble battles for justice have won over audiences for hundreds of years.

The “Evil Dead” movies have been the brainchild of Sam Raimi, who was very much inspired by the works of Hp Lovecraft and the mythology of the “Necronomicon.” The Necronomicon is usually a fictional grimoire appearing in Lovecraft’s horror tales. In the Evil Dead movies, the “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis” is the fictional grimoire usually playing havoc upon a group of unsuspecting inhabitants who chance upon the book (usually in a cabin in the woods) and attempt to read it, causing chaos.
Practical effects usually characterize the “Evil Dead” movies, with ample amounts of gore and a blend of horror and dark comedy, at least in terms of the original trilogy that Raimi directed. The newer versions skew more towards a dark, horror bent, but the gore remains consistent. Also consistent is the protagonist, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), who appears in all five films as well as the television series.

Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that

However, while we await further updates about these projects, Funko has dropped a new Ash and Evil Ash from Army of Darkness as part of the epic Evil Dead collection.

Over a decade after Army of Darkness first received the Funko treatment back in 2014, new Ash Williams and Evil Ash Pop! toys are on their way.
Ash dons his S-Mart uniform from the end of the film, complete with boomstick and mechanical hand. His possessed counterpart Evil Ash is ready for battle with a sinister sneer and medieval weaponry.
Both characters were played to perfection by Bruce Campbell in Sam Raimi‘s third entry in the Evil Dead franchise.
Due out in March, each 3.75″ vinyl figure costs $11.99.
The Evil Dead series continues to flourish with two new films in the works: Sébastien Vaniček‘s Evil Dead Burn, due out in 2026, and Francis Galluppi‘s as-yet-untitled installment.

Before his career truly took off, Leonardo DiCaprio was in one of the most underrated Westerns of all time, mostly due to one of his co-stars paying for his wages. Leonardo DiCaprio's filmography is incredibly strong, abd despite being pegged as a youthful heartthrob early in his career, some of DiCaprio's best films also rank among the best of the modern era. Still, there was a time when he was still trying to find his footing in a number of roles, even after his lauded performance in 1993's What's Eating Gilbert Grape.
Prior to the megastardom afforded by the likes of both Romeo + Juliet and Titanic, DiCaprio was cast in a Sam Raimi-directed Western film, which would end up getting lost among his major films both before and after. And his involvement only happened because one of his co-stars saw enough potential in him, years ahead of his break,...

The iconic cult horror series Evil Dead is getting its own tabletop RPG soon - and you can already contribute to a Kickstarter campaign to become an early adopter. Beginning with the 1981 film of the same title, the Evil Dead franchise has since spawned two direct sequels, two additional standalone films, and has another release, Evil Dead Burn, on the way. A pioneer in the comedy horror genre, the series has become synonymous with a unique blend of practical effect mastery, over-the-top gore, and irreverent humor, granting it lasting popularity and spawning countless imitators.
And now, players can craft their own grotesque, Evil Dead-inspired stories with an official tabletop RPG supplement, to be published by Lynnvander Studios and currently available for backing on Kickstarter. Expected to be released in June 2025, The Evil Dead 2 RPG Supplement is based on the 5e system, the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

The third film in a horror franchise often carries the weight of high expectations and franchise fatigue. However, some horror “threequels” break the mold, delivering scares, thrills, and fresh twists. Here are ten of the best horror movie threequels that deserve your attention.
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Director: Chuck Russell
This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.
2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Director: Tommy Lee Wallace
Although it departs from Michael Myers entirely, this standalone entry is a cult classic in its own right. Its eerie plot about a sinister mask company and haunting jingle makes it a unique entry in the Halloween franchise.
3. The Exorcist III (1990)
Director: William Peter Blatty
Returning to the chilling tone of the original, this sequel...

Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1The new Nick Fury is the most evil version of the character ever, and he’s just proven it by committing the horrific murder of Marvel’s most wholesome team: the Power Pack. It’s not exactly a new trick to make a story dark, but it works here because of just how over-the-top it is, and how far this book goes to make readers hate this guy.
In Ultimate Universe: One Year In #1 by Deniz Camp, Jonas Scharf, Mattia Iacono, and Travis Lanham, the Ultimate Universe's new version of Nick Fury proves how evil he is by killing this universe’s Power Pack in brutal fashion, meaning that the young heroes never have a chance to rise up against this world’s dictatorship.
The issue is structured as a confession by Fury, with the brutal child murder only one of the...

Brains! That's what it takes to make a good zombie movie these days. While the horror genre had a renaissance in the early 2000s, the leg-dragging flesh feasters have waned in popularity recently. Writer/Director Steve Wolsh of Living Dead Media is hoping to turn that around with a holiday twist on the Return of The Living Dead franchise. While details on the production are scant, Wolsh is getting some interesting pieces in order.
Wolsh spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and said that the film won't be a reboot but a sequel to the 1985 original, directed by Dan O’Bannon, and called the installment "a brand new adventure." He also confirmed that this film will use practical effects and real locations instead of greenscreen, which some may argue has robbed the potency and visceral power of the zombie genre in this century. Wolsh reflected on the practical effects teased in the...
