It's almost hard to believe that Sonic, who was first introduced by way of a video game all the way in 1991, is still captivating interest among multiple generations. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is looking to speed past Disneys highly-anticipated The Lion King prequel, Mufasa, at the box office in December and early projections look like that may, in fact, happen. Per Deadline, Sonic 3 is looking to overtake Barry Jenkins Mufasa by $55 million+ to $50 million. However, Disney has not fully launched its full-scale Mufasa marketing. Trailers for the film, though, are being shown during this weekends Moana 2 launch.

The 2019 film The Lion King, made $1.6 billion worldwide with $543.6 million coming domestically, against its $260 million budget. Mufasa stars the voices of Aaron Pierre as the voice of the titular character, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Donald Glover as Simba, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Beyonc as Nala and Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara.

With all the talk about the Thanksgiving weekend box office poised to be really robust for moviegoing, it's almost easy to forget that the holiday rush of late December is also expected to be huge for theatrical offerings. There are new titles for families and adults alike, and two of those family films – Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – have officially entered box office tracking, and they are pretty much running neck and neck for their estimated opening weekends.

Per Deadline, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is expected to open to $55 million or more, while Mufasa: The Lion King could roar to $50 million. As it stands now, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is tracking to open to $55 million over the Dec. 20-22 weekend, compared to $50 million for Mufasa: The Lion King, according to sources with access to data from leading research firm National Research Group.

It would be an upset if Sonic succeeded in beating Mufasa, considering that the summer 2019 remake The Lion King opened to a stunning $191.8 million domestically on its way to earning $1.7 billion globally. Like that film, Mufasa is a live-action movie relying heavily on photorealistic imagery.

Currently, the Hedgehog is looking to outrun the Lion, $55 million+ to $50 million, but keep in mind Disney hasn’t screamed out its Mufasa campaign yet. That happens on December 2, even though trailers will be in front of a ton of family eyeballs this week on Moana 2. Mufasa also has had three trailers out, and a teaser for tickets on sale, versus Sonic‘s two.

Right now, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is besting Mufasa in first choice, 11 to 7 for general audiences. Sonic 3 had a big second-trailer drop on Monday that trended all day. Mufasa is ahead of Sonic 3, 50 to 47, in interest.

A new trailer has been released for the upcoming sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Also announced was a special "Opening Day Fan Event Screening," which will give filmgoers some perks for being among the first to see the new film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be speeding its way into movie theaters on Dec. 19, 2024. With less than a month left to go until the film is released, a second official trailer has arrived. It features new footage of Jim Carrey in his dual roles as the Robotniks, while there's also more of Keanu Reeves' Shadow the Hedgehog on display, hinting at the major clash he'll be having with Ben Schwartz's Sonic. Even though Sonic the Hedgehog 2's wedding subplot was divisive, Shemar Moore's return as Randall in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is more than welcome. 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 expanded on the first film in all the right ways and was a hit with audiences. However, the "human B plot" was once again a controversial part of the film, similar to the first movie. At the beginning of Sonic 2, Tom and Maddie go to their friend Rachel's wedding in Hawaii, leaving Sonic all by himself to get into trouble.

While the wedding Tom and Maddie are at doesn't initially seem to be that important, and just serves as a way to separate Sonic from his human family, it becomes a much more central part of the plot when it's revealed who Rachel is marrying. Rachel's partner, Randall, actually has a secret identity and is using her to get close to Sonic.

Tickets for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have just gone on sale and an explosive new trailer has been released by Paramount Pictures. The focus is very much on Shadow's mission of revenge, along with the dynamic between Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

It goes without saying at this point that Jim Carrey steals the show, particularly as he's taking on dual roles in this threequel as both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Shadow's creator. There are also the expected pop culture references, with poor Tails compared to Detective Pikachu.

Back to Reeves, though, and he's so far proving himself a pitch-perfect choice to bring Shadow to life in this epic third chapter of the hit franchise. Similar to the Knuckles TV series, we'd imagine Paramount is heading into this movie with the intention of launching a big or small screen spin-off revolving around the fan-favourite anti-hero.

Ahead of the theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, McDonalds will be rolling out Sonic Happy Meal toys. Comic Book reports that the official McDonald's website had posted the toys based on the movie characters, but the site has removed the images. The exact date when the toys will start appearing in McDonalds Happy Meals is unknown.

Before the images were taken down from the McDonalds website, they started to spread on social media. Eight toys were posted to the social media site - two variations each of Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and Tails. The characters are shown in a ring of some sort. Sonic-City.net included additional images revealing four other toys, which may be spoiling major moments in the film. This could be why McDonald's has since seemingly removed the images.

Six-time Emmy Award nominee Idris Elbas next role could be that of Man-at-Arms in the new Amazon and Mattel Masters of the Universe movie. The Wrap reports Elba is in early talks to play the live-action version of the character, based on the classic Mattel franchise. If cast, he would join Nicholas Galitzine (He-Man), Camila Mendes (Teela), and Alison Brie (Evil-Lyn).

AMC Theaters' website has revealed that the third live-action Sonic movie will be 1 hour and 49 minutes long. "'Edginess' is maybe not the right word, but there was a new element tonally that just suddenly made the Sonic world feel a little bit more exciting, a little bit more dangerous," he teases. "I think that's exactly what Shadow has done for this film."

The movie won't pay lip service to the character (played by Keanu Reeves) either as Jim Carrey is set to play both Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather, Shadow's creator.

However, Fowler admits that some changes were necessary, particularly when it comes to Shadow's use of guns, adding that he went to great lengths to do right by the beloved fan-favourite while maintaining the necessary tone for a family film.

Like all the cast, [he] really wants to get it right and really cares. He would give us so many different versions of line readings and just want to keep going."
