Producers demanded a change in Tylor's age from 30 in the novels, to 20 and Azalyn's age from 10 to 16.

One of the crew members is based on (and even named after) Jason from Vendredi 13 (1980).

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is an anime series based on The Most Irresponsible Man in Space (Uchuu Ichi no Musekinin Otoko) light novel series by Hitoshi Yoshioka, taking the title from its first volume. It was produced by some of Japan's larger studios, including Big West, Tatsunoko Productions, King Records and VAP.
