Bob Dylan Stuns at 2025 ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’ Tour Kickoff
Image
Over the past four months, Bob Dylan has been closer to the forefront of popular culture than any other time in recent memory. This is largely due to Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan in the authorized biopic A Complete Unknown, which grossed over $130 million, earned eight Academy Award nominations, and introduced deep cuts like “Outlaw Blues” and “Three Angels” to a mass audience on a surreal episode of Saturday Night Live that Chalamet hosted as part of his Oscar campaign.

Dylan himself played a role in the frenzy by...

The Challenge’s Mark Long teases return of iconic theme and former castmates to All Stars
Image
The Challenge: All Stars is airing Season 5, featuring the classic Rivals theme from previous seasons.

During its many seasons, the flagship featured three Rivals seasons, including the memorable Rivals III, where Johnny Bananas stunned his teammate Sarah Rice and claimed all the prize money for himself.

All Stars Rivals also includes pairs of castmates with a feud, whether it’s due to a former argument, falling out, throwing shade, or backstabbing move from the game.

Among the teams are Nany Gonzalez with Turabi “Turbo” Camkiran, Faysal “Fessy” Shafaat with Amber Borzotra, Veronica Portillo with Katie Cooley, and Ashley Mitchell with Aneesa Ferreira.

Former showmance couple Dario Medrano and Ashley Kelsey seem to get along despite their differences.

They might also qualify for the iconic theme Mark Long recently mentioned that fans shared feedback about.

Bob Dylan Has Given Us One of His Most Timely Albums Ever With ‘Rough and Rowdy Ways’
Image
Another apocalypse; another side of Bob Dylan. The man really knows how to pick his moments. Dylan has brilliantly timed his new masterwork for a summer when the hard rain is falling all over the nation: a plague, a quarantine, revolutionary action in the streets, cities on fire, phones out of order. Rough and Rowdy Ways is his first batch of new songs in 8 years, and it’s an absolute classic—it has the bleak majesty of latter-day Dylan albums like Modern Times and Tempest, yet it goes beyond them,...

Denise Crosby (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is joining the recurring cast of Suits for the USA Network series’ ninth and final season.

Donald Sutherland talks his new film The Leisure SeekerDonald Sutherland talks his new film The Leisure SeekerMarni Weisz - Editor, Cineplex Magazine1/17/2018 10:56:00 Am

Hemingway House is okay, I assure Donald Sutherland, having just read an update online earlier that morning.

His home in Miami Beach is okay too, he tells me, as we sit down to discuss his movie The Leisure Seeker at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The day before our interview, and just two days after the film that follows senior couple Ella and John (Sutherland and Helen Mirren) on one last road trip down the Florida coast premiered in Toronto, Hurricane Irma beat down on much of the same territory covered in the film — lovely long roads, pristine beaches, and the couple’s ultimate destination, Ernest Hemingway’s old house on Key West.

There was nothing Sutherland — who, at 82, is still an imposing figure, both...

Joe Dante takes an alternately nostalgic and clear-eyed look at boyhood life in Key West circa 1962 where the busy military base is a daily reminder of nuclear era nerves and the movie theater is the only escape. A bigger-than-life John Goodman plays a free-wheeling director who brings his latest fright film to town in order to gin up excitement while the jets overhead inspire a different kind of anxiety. Co-starring Dante perennials Robert Picardo and Dick Miller and with a touching performance from Cathy Moriarty as Goodman’s long-suffering partner in barnstorming and ballyhoo.

‘Cuba and the Cameraman’ Review: Netflix Presents an Enthrallingly Intimate Look at 50 Years of Life in Cuba
Jon Alpert
When Americans think of Cuba, we tend to think of a place, and not a people. The same was true of East Germany, it’s still true of North Korea, and it will always be true of countries that are defined by their inaccessibility. Borders are blinding, and islands are isolated by more than just water. Only 105 miles separate Havana from Key West, but you can’t see anything on the horizon when you stand at the bottom tip of the United States and stare into the ocean.

Filmmaker Jon Alpert has spent his entire adult life trying to bring those two worlds closer together, and his simple but enthralling new documentary culls from almost 50 years’ worth of footage from his trips to the land of Fidel. Alpert has two Oscars to his name (both for Best Documentary Short), but most of his work in Cuba has been for archival purposes,...

Three Spooky Shorts
By Salim Garami

What's good?

I'm going to keep it short (pun unintended) this week. The choice to recommend short films that I am extremely fond off for more mood-setting Halloween season watching might seem uneventful to most. But the occasion is of celebration of an event that might resonate with some South Florida filmgoing readers. The Key West-based lesbian apocalypse horror short Buzzcut by Jon Rhoads and Mike Marrero has just won Best Film at FilmGate Miami's monthly 'I'm Not Gonna Move to L.A.' festival in the middle of its festival tour and if you follow me on Motorbreath, you might have seen me singing the praises of that short wishing better things for it.

So, in anticipation of the day that short might be more easily accessible to everyone, here are 3 horror shorts that I usually find myself indulging in to get into the Halloween spirit.

Harmony Korine’s Matthew McConaughey-Starring Stoner Comedy ‘The Beach Bum’ May Screen in Weed-Laced Smell-o-Vision
Harmony Korine in Spring Breakers (2012)
Singular filmmaker Harmony Korine has some high hopes for his latest feature, though fans of the indie auteur hoping to enjoy the full scope of his vision might have to travel a little further afield to enjoy it as it was meant to be seen. Or, more appropriately, smelled. In a new interview with Telerama (via The Playlist), Korine opens up about an ambitious — and delightfully bonkers — plan to really steep his audience in the next film, the stoner comedy “The Beach Bum,” set to star Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg in a Cheech and Chong-esque misadventure.

In short: Korine wants to get you high. Literally.

“It’s a comedy with Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg, about somewhat depressive marijuana smokers, in the spirit of Cheech and Chong,” Korine said in the new interview.

Pity the poor exhibitors in 1953 that splurged on 3-D equipment, only to see the payroll soar and the profits fall. Nope, Anamorphic Widescreen was the innovation that swept the world. It proved perfect for stories with scenic grandeur, such as Fox’s very early mini-epic shot on Florida locations. Thanks to Bernard Herrmann’s impressive music score, this one’s not going away.

Jennifer Tilly, Denise Crosby, Fisher Stevens, Terrence 'T.C.' Carson, Leland Crooke, Kim Myers, Ivory Ocean, Lara Piper, Geno Silva, and Brian Thompson in Key West (1993)
While the major venues of the Key West Film Festival luckily made it through both Hurricanes Harvey and Irma with little damage, the rest of the community the festival calls home did not. To that end, the annual event — which bills itself as “Passion Meets Paradise” — is working towards assisting in rebuilding efforts around the Key West area.

In a new call for action, the festival’s Founder and Chairman A. Brooke Christian, recalls why Key West inspired the festival to begin with, sharing, “Six years ago, we committed to Key West to host our film festival because of the vibrancy and tenacity of its people. And in this time of great adversity, that strength and resilience is more powerful than ever. But recovery and rehabilitation will not come easily. It will require an incredible amount of assistance and outside support. I implore you to do what you can to help…...

Hemingway Home Cats Won't Starve Post-Irma on 4-Week Supply of Chow
The Hemingway Home cats are making it out better than some humans post-Hurricane Irma because there's enough food to feed all 55 of them for the next 4 weeks. We spoke with a Hemingway Home employee who told us the place picked up 300 lbs of cat food before Irma hit. Normally the kitties go through about 80 lbs a week, so there's plenty of grub to get them through the next month. Key West, where the famed home sits,...

When it comes to keeping the wild animals of Florida safe from Hurricane Irma, zoos, sanctuaries and rescues get creative.

For one animal welfare non-profit in Key West, Florida, this meant sending its critters into the clink.

According to ABC News, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Farm, an animal rescue that takes in local abandoned, confiscated, abused and donated creatures of all kinds, decided to relocate its residents to the nearby Stock Island Detention Center to ride out the storm in safety.

The animals, which include a sloth, ponies, llamas, snakes, alligators and more, are no strangers to a life behind bars.

“My grandfather’s famous quote was ‘courage is grace under pressure,’ but I think this is taking it too far,” said Mariel Hemingway when she heard that the manager of her family’s historic home, the Hemingway House in Key West, Florida, had decided to stay with the 54 cats that live on the property despite the massive approaching storm, Hurricane Irma.

The house, which now operates as a museum, was built in 1849 and completed in 1851. Hemingway moved into it in 1931, and he lived there until 1940. The house is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and Literary Landmark by the U.

Don’t Try This at Home! Video Shows Meteorologist Nearly Get Blown Over by 117 Mph Winds in Key West
Meteorologist Simon Brewer posted a video on Sunday morning of what happened after his fellow meteorologist Justin Drake got out of his car and came face-to-face with Hurricane Irma in Key West, Florida.

Irma made landfall on the Keys early Sunday morning with triple-digit wind gusts and heavy rain that had already wrecked havoc in the Caribbean.

In the video Drake, who had previously appeared on The Weather Channel series Storm Riders, can clearly be seen struggling to maintain his balance as winds whip against him. It appeared he was trying to get a reading of the storm.

Helping even the smallest of Floridians, police worked to transport the Miami area’s newest arrival from a local hospital to a hotel.

Key West's Hemingway House Almost Certainly an Irma Casualty
The legendary Ernest Hemingway home appears doomed ... an almost certain casualty of Hurricane Irma ... this according to local law enforcement. The Key West home -- made of wood and built in the 1850's -- sits about 16 feet above sea level, which is the highest point on the island. Law enforcement tells us they're expecting at least 15 feet of water to flood the area ... so the outcome is bleak. The Hemingway Home's manager, 72-year-old Jacqui Sands,...

Helen Mirren at an event for RED 2 (2013)
Donald Sutherland Struggles With Alzheimer's in 'The Leisure Seeker' (Exclusive Video)
Helen Mirren at an event for RED 2 (2013)
Helen Mirren is upbeat alongside Donald Sutherland in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive clip of The Leisure Seeker.

Mirren stars in the dramedy as Ella, who is dying of cancer, opposite Sutherland as John, a retired professor who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Rather than spending their last days in a nursing home or a hospital bed, they dust off their titular vintage Rv for a final road trip from Boston to Key West.

The Sony Pictures Classics release is based on Michael Zadoorian's 2009 novel, and marks the English-language debut of Italian director Paolo Virzi (Like Crazy). It made its...

The Leisure Seeker review – Helen Mirren camper van yarn sticks to the middle of the road
Mirren and Donald Sutherland head off along Route 1 for a well-constructed, but not especially original, study of a long-married couple in their golden years

It’s an average morning in the town of Wellesley, Massachusetts, when a middle-aged man flips up the garage door outside his parents’ quiet home. What he sees there freezes his blood and has him fumbling for his phone. The garage is empty; the camper-van has vanished. “Mom and Dad are gone!” he wails. “And you won’t believe this – so is the Leisure Seeker!”

The starting pistol fired, Paolo Virzi’s film springs out of the gate with all the urgency of a well-fed housecat. Ella and John Spencer are ambling out of New England in their 1975 Winnebago, pointed south on Route 1 on a mission to visit Hemingway’s house in Key West. They’re cruising through red-state USA at the peak of the presidential...

Night Moves
Arthur Penn’s detective movie is one of the best ever in the genre, one that rewards repeat viewings particularly well. Gumshoe Harry Moseby compartmentalizes his marriage, his job, his past and the greedy Hollywood has-beens he meets, not realizing that everything is interconnected, and fully capable of assembling a world-class conspiracy. Gene Hackman tops a sterling cast in the film that introduced most of us to Melanie Griffith.

Blu-ray Review: The Breaking Point, Brutal, Merciless Melodrama on Criterion
Remakes are not always bad things. Take, for example, The Breaking Point, based on a novel by Ernest Hemingway. First published in 1937, To Have and Have Not followed the adventures of Harry Morgan, a fishing boat captain in Key West, who is forced into the black market, ferrying contraband between Florida and Cuba. Seven years later, it was adapted for the big screen by director Howard Hawks, based on a screenplay credited to Jules Furthman and William Faulkner (?!). The film departed significantly from its source material, becoming a romantic, wartime thriller with comic elements, featuring the first screen appearance by Lauren Bacall, who famously fell in love with Humphrey Bogart during production. I've seen Hawks' version of To Have and Have Not so...

Siesta Key star Alex Kompothecras was at the Key West, Florida, airport about to board a flight when a friend sent him a link to a video that left him disgusted.

“I was, like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ ” Kompothecras, 22, tells People of being sent a video of his friend Michael Wenzel and two other men allegedly dragging a shark by its fin behind a boat at high speed. “I was absolutely horrified.”

But by the time the MTV reality star landed in New York City, he was shocked to find that — despite the fact he is not in the video...

The Breaking Point
You can tell it’s film noir — even the cabin cruiser has Venetian blinds. Ernest Hemingway’s favorite film adaptation of his work is this uncompromised story of a good man taking a criminal course on the high seas. John Garfield is again ‘one man alone’ against the system, and the moral quicksand all but swallows up Patricia Neal, Phyllis Thaxter and Wallace Ford.
