With Shark Week arguably America’s most beloved religious festival and the unprecedented worldwide cultural impact of Anthony C. Ferrante’s acclaimed Sharknado trilogy showing no sign of letting up, who could deny the necessity of the Jaws sequels finally getting a Blu-ray release?

The immediate answer is obvious (well, anyone), though this belated look at Jaws 2, Jaws 3-D, Jaws: The Revenge and Jaws 5: The Sharkening was, for this writer at least, a nostalgic journey through a world where morbidly obese fish bear grudges, Michael Caine fights a script far deadlier than any marine predator and where lines such as “Weld that sonuvabitch” are somehow deemed passable.

It’s hard to say much about director’s Alexandre Aja’s latest movie The 9th Life of Louis Drax without spoiling some of its many twists.

Based on Liz Jensen’s novel and adapted by actor Max Minghella (who appeared in Aja’s previous movie Horns), the thriller stars Aiden Longworth as the title character, a young accident-prone boy who has survived numerous near-death experiences only to fall off a cliff while picnicking with his parents (Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon). The fall puts Louis into a coma and as his father, the prime suspect, goes on the run, Louis’ mother starts to have feelings for his doctor (Jamie Dornan), who also wonders if there’s more to what happened than what he’s being told.

Although there are some classic horror elements within Louis Drax, it’s a very different beast from the more grotesque and violent films...

The CW will house Jason Voorhees' new slasher adventures, as it announces development of the upcoming Friday The 13th TV series...

So, Friday The 13th is getting a TV show. We’ve known that for a while. Today we learned that The CW network is developing the new version, and that the show has been described as ‘a drama series based on the long-running feature franchise.’

Does that mean it’s a remake, then? Not a sequel like Damien or a prequel like Hannibal or Bates Motel? At the moment, it’s not entirely clear, but the description has few clues.

According to Deadline (who broke the news), the Friday The 13th series ‘reimagines the masked Jason with a stronger feel of grounded reality. Described as a sophisticated, horror/crime thriller, [...] about the ongoing quest of a detective’s search for his missing brother that is somehow tied to Jason Voorhees,...

I’m totally (!) a child of “retro”. I love old cheapo synthesizers, Stephen J. Cannell shows, and crappy-adr’d eighties bombastic cinema. In fact, the cheesier it is, the more I’m probably going to like it.

As I get a little more “edumacated”, however, I am finding that all of those things, as cool as they seemed when I was little, aren’t the least bit cool now. And why? Well, sadly, most of them were a product of the consumer machine that much of our society is still chugging away at today, it’s just that back then it all looked a little more unsophisticated, a little more raw and rough. But still, it’s the same machine, and because I was younger I bought into it. Omg! I was so saddened to hear this news this afternoon. One of the greatest television creators, Stephen J. Cannell, has passed away today at 68 due to complications associated with melanoma. Here is a statement his family made to the press:

“Aside from being a legendary television producer and prolific writer, Stephen was also a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. Mr. Cannell is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Marcia, their three children, Tawnia, Chelsea and Cody and three grandchildren. Stephen was the pillar of strength within his family and he touched everyone he met. He will be most deeply missed. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Cancer Society or The International Dyslexia Association. Details regarding his memorial service will be released.”

Naturally there were ground rules including the disqualifications of news organizations that contain notorious on air potheads. This meant no votes were collected for the cast of The Daily Show, Colbert Report and Fox and Friends. You think Steve Doocey is sober? Hard to think that any of those folks have eyes that aren’t pied 24-7.

10, Bill O’Reilly (Fox News) had a lot of folks who reacted that it’d be like, “Dude, I’m getting high with dad.” Of course this initial elation is cut down with the horrifying fact of “Dude, I’m getting high with dad and it’s just not someone I need to party with.”

Actor Liam Neeson is in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to star in the new film version of The A-Team.

Neeson, 57, would play Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith, the role played in the iconic 80s TV show by George Peppard, according to Variety.

Variety adds that Bradley Cooper is in early talks to play Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck - the role originally played by Dirk Benedict - even though Cooper himself had earlier denied rumours he was up for that role. He last month claimed he hadn't read a script or met the director.

Joe Carnahan (Faceless, Smokin' Aces) is to direct the movie, which will begin production in August for release on June 11, 2010.
