‘To Be Hero X’ Fools You With Shonen-Like “Flashiness of the visuals”
Image
One of the biggest anime series in 2025 is To Be Hero X, for its unique animation style and compelling storyline. It’s an anthology rather than a straightforward timeline, where the audience has to think about the events unraveling on screen.

The most interesting part about To Be Hero X, however, is the different characters you follow in the story. They all have different personalities, origin stories, and motivations. It might be a hero series with some incredible action sequences, but what really gets you hooked is the emotional rollercoaster it puts you through.

This is why some Shonen stories end up feeling flat. In To Be Hero X, you get emotionally connected to the characters. Visuals can only get you so far, but the story needs to drive it.

To Be Hero X might be a visual masterpiece, but the producers know the story is the real deal

Image
Snoop Dogg has a biopic that's currently in development, set to bring the life story of the famed rapper to the big screen. The first question fans will likely have about the movie is who will be playing the music icon, and the answer to that has just been revealed.

Per Deadline, actor Jonathan Daviss has been tapped to portray Snoop Dogg in the upcoming biopic in the works at Universal Pictures. Disney neglects multiple villains in new development
Image
It's no secret that Disney has created some of the most wicked and wonderful villains in modern fiction. However, as much as we love, hate, and love hating the likes of Maleficent, Ursula, and Jafar, it feels like Disney is neglecting many of its evil icons.

At the parks, characters like Gaston, Captain Hook, and the Ugly Stepsisters can be found semi-regularly, but there's more that Disney could do with an entire expansion dedicated to them. Granted, it would be impossible to bring every last one of our favorite villains to the parks as Meet and Greets, but Disney certainly has the resources to give us more than the bare minimum.

Disney needs more villains

If Villains: Unfairly Ever After is any indication of what Disney can do with the villains as full-fledged characters, it's clear where some improvements can be made. Captain Hook, Jafar, and more look great when...

Queen Charlotte: Does The Bridgerton Spin-Off Deserve A Second Season? Here’s What We Think
Image
Should Queen Charlotte Return With A Second Season? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Queen Charlotte was one such Netflix show left hanging mid-way, and it felt unfair. The show’s first season was a knockout, so good that calling it the best spin-off in the Bridgerton universe was an understatement. But now, the big question loomed: would there be a second season? Sadly, the answer wasn’t clear. Creator Shonda Rhimes gave a disappointing update, revealing she was “trying to figure it out still,” making the wait even tougher for the audience who craved more royal drama (via Digital Spy).

The six-episode series had served as a prequel to Bridgerton, diving into Queen Charlotte’s rise to power and her complex relationship with King George III. It was a tightly wrapped story, a “complete tale of this complicated, imperfect love,” as Rhimes called it. She made it clear she didn’t want...

Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025) Review
Image
For all its stab-happy bravado and garish neon style, Fear Street: Prom Queen is less a triumphant return to Shadyside than it is a competent if derivative riff on the slashers of yesteryear. Directed by Calibre’s Matt Palmer, this latest Netflix horror outing doesn’t so much reinvent the wheel as ride it straight into a blood-soaked locker room, armed with a buzzsaw and a very ‘80s mixtape.

Set in 1988, the story centres on Lori Granger (India Fowler), a soft-spoken outsider whose tragic family history makes her the school’s resident pariah. She’s inexplicably nominated for prom queen alongside Tiffany Falconer (Fina Strazza), the leader of a snarling clique known as the Wolf Pack. When candidates start dropping like hairspray-flecked flies, suspicion, blood and body parts mount in tandem. This time round the killer is masked figure in a red slicker, apparently inspired by I Know What You...

Talking R.L. Stine, Tubular Tunes, and Killer ’80s Fashion with Fear Street: Prom Queen’s Matt Palmer, India Fowler, Fina Strazza, Rebecca Ablack, Ella Rubin, and Ariana Greenblatt
Image
As enamored as I was with the Goosebumps books at the public library when I was growing up, I was just as obsessed with R.L. Stine's Fear Street novels. There was something more dangerous about them, more edgy, more slasher-y. While Goosebumps sparked my imagination with frightful fun, Fear Street gave me something to look forward to fearing when I was old enough to cross the street to Shadyside.

I was fortunate to even own some Fear Street books at a young age, when an older cousin gave my family several grocery bags of books for my sister and I to enjoy. Nestled between used paperbacks of The Baby-Sitters Club and Full House stories were a stack of Stine's Fear Street titles (as well as a couple of Christopher Pike books), and ocassionally I would gaze at the eerie covers of these books, wondering what types of terror awaited me within its yellowed,...

The new ‘Fear Street’ movie brings slasher vibes and ‘80s style.
Image
A masked killer targets prom queen hopefuls in this standalone Netflix horror.

I was a “Goosebumps” kid through and through, so R.L. Stine was basically my gateway drug to horror. But I didn’t start reading the “Fear Street” books until way later — turns out, they’re even more twisted (in the best way). The recent wave of “Fear Street” movies has totally revived the franchise, and now there’s another bloody adaptation on the way: “Fear Street: Prom Queen.” Set during prom season in 1988, this slasher throwback takes us back to Shadyside High, where It Girls are vanishing one by one — and a masked killer is crashing the party. It premieres Friday, May 23, only on Netflix.

How to watch ‘Fear Street: Prom Queen’ When: Friday, May 23, 2025, at 3 a.m. Et TV: Netflix Stream: Watch with a subscription to Netflix From anywhere: Watch with a subscription to a Vpn. Everything...

When Quentin Tarantino Revealed How This Stanley Kubrick Classic Inspired His Iconic Debut With Reservoir Dogs
Image
Which Stanley Kubrick Movie Inspired Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; Instagram )

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry. He has given the world some of the most commendable cinematic works, whether Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But even a filmmaker as bold and unique as Tarantino had his influences. And one of the biggest? Stanley Kubrick. Released in the mid-1950s, The Killing marked a turning point in Kubrick’s career. Until then, he had only made a few smaller films, but The Killing was his first real entry into Hollywood filmmaking. The story, adapted from the novel Clean Break by Lionel White, follows a group of men planning and carrying out a racetrack heist. Kubrick...

A Look Back At Parineeti Chopra and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Meri Pyaari Bindu
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at the Parineeti Chopra and Ayushmann Khurrana’s Meri Pyaari Bindu released eight years ago. Plus, as a bonus, in a throwback interview from 2017, we hear from Parineeti Chopra about the film, working with Ayushmann, and what it was like to sing for the film.

Sometimes, a debutant director shows a spark that never quite lights up the screen. In Meri Pyaari Bindu, which completes eight years this week, displays a keen eye for Kolkata’s eccentricities: the trams and the fast-food lanes, the Durga idol silhouetting the hero’s suicide attempt, the loud boisterous parents of the Bengali protagonist Abhi…. so-called, so that the theme song of his love story could be ‘Abhi na jao chod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahin.’

There is a lot to ‘get’ in Meri Pyaari Bindu, including its corny cross references to films about unrequited love like Karan Johar...

Henry Cavill's Highlander Reboot Gets A Major Release Update From Director
Image
Long-gestating plans for the forthcoming Highlanderreboot starring Henry Cavill have taken another major step forward. Based on the cult classic 1986 fantasy-adventure film that would spawn a long-running franchise, plans for a fresh reboot of the property have been in motion since 2008. With the new Highlander movie set to be helmed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski, recent reports have also suggested that Amazon MGM Studios' United Artists has looked to purchase the full franchise rights from Lionsgate, which could potentially also lead to a spinoff television series.

Speaking with Collider, Stahelski revealed when viewers might finally expect to see the new Highlander movie arrive in theaters. He suggested that plans are currently in motion that will see the next 24 hours determine whether filming begins in September this year. If approved, the director said that it is likely that Cavill’s reboot movie will arrive sometime in either 2027 or 2028. Check out...

'Suits LA' Canceled After One Season at NBC
Image
It seems that the magic of Suits’ Netflix resurgence did not carry over to the long-running drama series’ spinoff, Suits LA, as NBC has filed a cease and desist letter after just a single season.

The series, which was headlined by Stephen Amell, arrived on NBC with high expectations – perhaps too high. The show’s reviews were brutal, and the series suffered for not being able to live up to its predecessor. While the spinoff was mostly its own show, with limited connections to the flagship show, over the course of its single season several original cast members were brought back onboard, but even that was not enough to give it a second chance on the network.

In the end, Suits LA had a legacy to live up and it failed. Ratings started off middle-of-the-road, and didn't improve as the episodes rolled out each week. Even with original stars like Gabriel Macht,...

Superman Promo Photo Sees David Corenswet Recreate Iconic All-star Superman Cover Pose
Image
The marketing campaign for Superman is starting to ramp up. However, with James Gunn confirming that the first Peacemaker season 2 trailer drops on Friday, the wait continues for more footage of the Dcu's Man of Steel in action.

In the meantime, a new promotional photo from Dairy Queen appears to show David Corenswet's Kal-El recreating the iconic cover art for All-Star Superman #1.

Gunn is all about embracing the comic books, and we expect to see plenty of familiar shots like this both in future marketing material and in theaters this July. Despite this nod, the filmmaker isn't adapting Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's magnum opus.

"I mean, All-Star Superman, there's a couple of them, but All-Star Superman is the thing that we borrow the most heavily from," Gunn said last December. "Our plot has nothing to do with All-Star Superman, but some of the aesthetics of what Grant...

The Silent Achiever, The Best Of Madhu Mantena
Image
As a producer, Madhu Mantena has an impeccable track record of creative and commercial success. Subhash K Jha lists his five picks for the best of the best Madhu Mantena.

1.Ghajini (2008):

The first 100-crore success of Indian cinema. Ghajini, directed by A R Murugadoss, is not for the squeamish. The violence is prolonged, sadistic, and often done with the elaborate abundance and eye-catching elan of a staged opera (Ravi Chandran’s camerawork glistens and bristles with optimum optical glory). And yet women in the audience seemed to love the film. Ghajini is at heart a love story of a cocooned tycoon who discovers love in a working-class environment. Aamir Khan’s expressions of bewilderment, curiosity, pleasure, and acceptance in Asin’s company remind you of a baby that’s just discovered mother-love.

2. Rakht Charitra (2010):

Marking the Hindi debut of Tamil superstar Suriya, this is another violent but stunning study of human avarice.

Denise Richards at an event for Madea: Protection de témoins (2012)
Denise Richards & Her Wild Things Season 1 Review: L.A. Family Life Illuminated
Denise Richards at an event for Madea: Protection de témoins (2012)
Denise Richards & Her Wild Things opens with sun‑lit shots of Malibu shoreline that recall the vibrant color palettes of modern Bollywood dramas, then pivots to the quietly charged domestic spaces where Richards and her blended family negotiate everyday life. Cinematographer Jennie Norris applies a high‑contrast aesthetic—golden hour backdrops merging with the pastel facades of Richards’s rented townhomes—to frame each heartfelt exchange like a sequence in a family saga. Upbeat pop tracks propel segments on high‑intensity workouts and Golden Retriever training, while moments of tender confession lean on minimalist piano underscoring, echoing the emotional cues of parallel cinema’s introspective scenes.

Editing by Marchéisla Ruiz stitches these vignettes into a fluid rhythm, using quick‑cut montages that nod to Bollywood’s song‑and‑dance transitions when Richards rallies her daughters for a picnic, then slowing pace for face‑to‑camera confessions that feel as intimate as any vérité sequence.

"I'm Very Grateful": 'The Equalizer' Star Bids Farewell After Shock Cancellation [Exclusive]
Image
As fans prepare to say goodbye to The Equalizer with today's series finale, one of its key stars is reflecting on five transformative seasons — and expressing heartfelt gratitude for the ride. The long-running Queen Latifah-starring CBS drama was cancelled earlier this week, surprising fans who had not only been anticipating a sixth season, but even a spin-off as well. Speaking exclusively with Collider’s Christina Radish at the press junket for Prime Video’s The Better Sister, Lorraine Toussaint opened up about the surprise cancellation and what playing Aunt Vi has meant to her. She told Collider:

“We just got word last night that we’re done. I think of all the characters I’ve played, and that one allowed me to indulge my maternal, softer side more than any other characters I’ve played. I’ve played psychopaths and all sorts of things. She’s definitely not...

'The Equalizer' Cast Share Heartfelt Farewell After Show's Cancelation
Image
Fans of CBS's The Equalizercouldn't believe their eyes when news broke of the Queen Latifah-led show's cancelation just a few days before the Season 5 finale. After weeks of hoping CBS would give it another chance, the network decided not to renew the crime drama series, which is a reboot of the 1985 show of the same name. The upcoming episode, which was supposed to be the season finale, will now serve as the series finale. The cast have been sharing their reactions to the cancelation on social media, reflecting on being a part of the show and thanking viewers for watching.

According to Deadline, Queen Latifah, who played Robyn McCall, posted a passionate tribute to The Equalizer fans following the news. McCall, the lead character, is a single mom with a mysterious background who uses her skills to help those in need. To many, she was a guardian angel...

Queen Latifah and Florin Penișoară in The Equalizer (2021)
Queen Latifah crime drama The Equalizer canceled after 5 seasons
Queen Latifah and Florin Penișoară in The Equalizer (2021)
The Equalizer, the CBS crime series which stars Queen Latifah, has been canceled after five seasons. The fifth — and now final season — set to conclude on Sunday.

While the news may seem abrupt and won’t allow The Equalizer to go out in a way that will completely satisfy fans, Deadline reports that the showrunners purposely designed the fifth season finale to be able to play as a series send-off. Obviously that points to them being well aware that The Equalizer could have been headed towards the chopping block.

Queen Latifah reacted to the news of The Equalizer’s cancellation by taking to Instagram, writing, “Stepping into a kick-ass role like Robyn was everything I hoped it would be. Shakim [Compere] and I at Flavor Unit are always excited to bring these kinds of roles and projects to life-and then we just hope you love them as much as we do.

Guns N’ Roses Kick Off 2025 Tour, Play First Show with New Drummer: Video + Setlist
Image
Guns N’ Roses launched their 2025 international tour on Thursday (May 1st) at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park in Incheon, South Korea.

The gig marked the band’s first concert in a year and a half, and the first Gn’R show for new drummer Isaac Carpenter, who took over after the band parted ways with longtime stickman Frank Ferrer in March.

For Carpenter’s debut behind the kit, the band opened their kickoff concert in South Korea with “Welcome to the Jungle” — remarkably, the first time Gn’R have opened with the song since 2012.

The 22-song set hit on every era of the band, from obligatory Appetite for Destruction classics, to the Use You Illusion albums and a few Chinese Democracy cuts

The band did not appear to perform an encore, instead closing with a strong trio of classic-era staples: “Patience,” “Nightrain,” and lastly, “Paradise City.”

Axl Rose and company also...

Quinta Brunson is only the third Black woman to host ‘SNL’ multiple times
Image
Quinta Brunson is about to join a rare group that only includes Queen Latifah and Maya Rudolph.

On May 3, the two-time Emmy winner for Abbott Elementary will host Saturday Night Live for the second time in her career. Only two Black women have ever hosted SNL multiple times: Latifah in 2003 and 2004, and Rudolph in 2012, 2021, and 2024.

The first time Brunson emceed NBC's late night program in April 2023, she went viral for the "Bosses" sketch in which she and Sarah Sherman played bald, chauvinistic male executives who acted inappropriately toward a new female employee (Chloe Fineman). Brunson's character was obsessed with Fineman's "big old buttered yams," proclaiming, "What I wouldn't do to jump off a diving board and cannonball into that cleavage. Help, I'm drowning! But don't save me — I want to die in there."

Other notable sketches included "Traffic Altercation," where Brunson got into a fight with Mikey Day while stuck in traffic; "Drug Dealer,...

Sisterhood, Inc Review: From Boardroom to Roller-Rink Bonds
Image
Sisterhood, Inc. opens with Megan Moore’s meticulously scheduled morning routine—Peloton rides, color-coded calendars and all—juxtaposed against her younger sister Izzy’s carefree late-night escapades. This clever hook immediately stakes out a familiar Bollywood trope: the contrast between order and chaos within the same family, reminiscent of Hindi parallel cinema’s playful yet pointed social observations.

Set against a glossy urban backdrop, the film marries Hallmark-style brightness with moments of genuine warmth. The sunlit city streets, crisp editing and sprightly musical cues nod to Bollywood’s own penchant for location-driven spectacle, even as the narrative remains deeply rooted in North American romantic comedy conventions.

At the story’s heart lies a provocative experiment: following Megan’s abrupt ouster as CEO of her scheduling-app startup, she assembles a “board of directors” to overhaul Izzy’s haphazard life. This premise explores sibling dynamics through the lens of corporate strategy, echoing...

On His Birthday Shining The Spotlight On Varun Dhawan’s Most Mature Performances
Image
In celebration of Varun Dhawan’s birthday, Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on the actor’s career and shares his list of Varun’s most mature and best performances… so far.

Sriram Raghavan’s Badlapur (2015) was Varun’s first thrust at something more substantial and realistic than the fluff stuff he had done till then. Director Sriram Raghavan had an older actor in mind to play a man grieving and raging for his slain family. Varun insisted on doing the role. Varun Dhawan, a bit raw around the edges, is nonetheless acutely effective as the grieving family man and Nawazuddin flawlessly flamboyant as the sly villain who has willy-nilly destroyed the hero’s life, together confer an overpowering immediacy to the proceedings. Varun falters due to inexperience but more than redeems himself in a sequence such as the one where he confesses to Nawazuddin about cold-bloodedly killing a couple.

Karina Longworth on Late Style, Unfashionable Auteurs and Season 20 of Her Film History Podcast ‘You Must Remember This’
Image
Late style can seem like a safe haven for the modern movie lover. Whether its the sparse styling of Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” or the multi-million-dollar gonzo flair of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” there’s a vital, existential intrigue to directors who may seem over the hill, or encased in amber, and who can be easily dismissed as unfashionable.

“Nobody will admit that about Clint Eastwood though! Everybody on the internet is a Clint auteurist,” Karina Longworth says, chuckling. The film historian and former critic has been the writer and host of her podcast “You Must Remember This” since 2014. “It was definitely that in terms of ‘Megalopolis.’ … It is very easy to write off Coppola as a rich old man who doesn’t have to answer to anyone but himself and to say that that’s a problem. But the out-of-timeness, looking backwards and forwards, is what’s exciting about it.

Manoj, any unfulfilled wishes?

My directors locate me in Chandni Chowk or a village near Varanasi where they’ve probably never heard of Savile Row. There was a time when Neeraj Pandey, my director of Special 26, was producing a film that was to be shot in London. I cribbed to him that when he casts me, he takes me to the gullis and bylanes of Indian cities. But when he produces a film located in London, I’m not part of it. No one shoots...

Image
