The 8 Movies That Defined Will Smith's Career
Image
Will Smith has had a long and illustrious career in Hollywood, but there are a few movies that really formed the foundation for his success. As a young man, Smith started his career in entertainment as a rapper. He was part of the hip-hop duo, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, which began to gain recognition and success in its own rite. After releasing some songs that charted on the Billboards Hot 100, Smith was eventually given an opportunity to play a fictionalized version of himself in a TV show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990.

Smith's talent for acting meant that he was a natural on the small screen, and the show would go on to become wildly successful, running for a total of six years, and inspiring a nowadays reboot that began airing in 2022 titled simply, Bel-Air. However, Smith's ambition and talent propelled him to work in larger projects,...

Will Smiths Unwritten Sequel Rule Makes This Upcoming Sci-Fi Movie Even More Exciting
Image
Will Smith's upcoming movie, I Am Legend 2, will break the actor's unwritten rule when it comes to sequels and it makes it all the more exciting. Based on Robert Matheson's novel, I Am Legend centers on Dr. Robert Nevulle's search for a cure after the human race is infected by a zombie virus. Although I Am Legend had a controversial ending, the movie mostly garnered positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Seventeen years after I Am Legend was released, the highly anticipated I Am Legend 2 with Michael B. Jordan in the cast will finally be coming to the big screen.

Although Will Smith is mostly known for his action movies, the actor has also appeared in several sci-fi movies including Men in Black, Bright, and After Earth. Throughout his illustrious acting career, it seems that Smith has an unwritten rule when it comes to making sequels,...

Independence Day Still Holds A Big Will Smith Box Office Record That May Never Be Broken
Image
Will Smith's "Independence Day" holds a record as his only project to top the worldwide box office. "Independence Day" was the highest-grossing movie of 1996, earning $817 million worldwide. The modern box office has changed, making it unlikely for Smith to replicate "Independence Day's" success.

Will Smith's classic action blockbuster Independence Day still holds a record that may never be broken. Smith rose to stardom as the lead in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, which became one of the most popular and beloved sitcoms of the 1990s, running for 147 episodes across six seasons from 1990 to 1996. The Fresh Prince of Beil-Air aired its final episode on May 20, 1996 even while the show continued to receive great ratings for the sole reason that Smith was ready to become a movie star. Smith quickly starred in Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1997), two of his highest-grossing movies.

Smith's career in feature film began with...

Will Smith Names 4 Movies That Best Define His Career
Image
The Pursuit of Happyness, Men In Black and others make Smith's personal Mount Rushmore of his own movies. Smith had fun making Aladdin and Bad Boys but doesn't add them to his top four. Despite controversy, Smith's career highlights include an Oscar win and successful film roles.

With Bad Boys: Ride or Die set to hit theaters, Will Smith names the four movies that best define his career. Hes been a sitcom star and a rapper, and hes headed up some of the most iconic Hollywood movies of recent decades, including blockbusters like Independence Day and Men in Black. In 2022, Smith achieved a new artistic height when he won the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard a moment that was marred by The Slap. Still trying to bounce back from that controversy, Smith is back in theaters with the sequel Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

With a Hollywood resume spanning...

Will Smith's 10 Best Movie Roles, Ranked
Image
The Willennium may have started nearly a quarter of a century ago, but Will Smith has been dominating on screen since the early 1990s. The Academy Award-winning star has been a blockbuster juggernaut with a commanding presence on screen, dabbling in anything and everything. Serious fare like "Concussion," edgy superhero stories like "Hancock" and "Suicide Squad," action-packed dramas like "Enemy of the State," sci-fi thrillers like "I, Robot," musicals like "Aladdin," and plenty of goofy nonsense like "Shark Tale" and "Wild Wild West" have all let Big Willy Style flex his acting muscles and show that he truly is a jack of all trades. From his humble beginnings in the ensemble piece "Where the Day Takes You" to the recently announced "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," Smith is one of Hollywood's most prolific and profitable performers. And fortunately, he's also one of the best. It's time to get jiggy wit'...

Will Smith's First Ever Movie Was A $3 Million Box Office Bomb (But Critics Liked It)
Image
Will Smith's debut movie received great reviews but proved to be a total bomb back in 1992. Smith became one of the biggest movie stars in the world during the '90s and it's almost hard to imagine a time he wasn't huge. His music career led to beloved sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, which ran between 1990 and 1996. In between seasons, Smith made some film appearances, including a supporting role in1993 comedy Made In America - starring Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson - and drama Six Degrees Of Separation, where he won acclaim for his role as a young con artist.

While Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air marked Smith's acting debut, his first movie was actually the gritty 1992 drama Where the Day Takes You. This follows a group of runaway teenagers living on the streets of Los Angeles and has an impressive ensemble that includes Sean Astin, Lara Flynn Boyle,...

What Happened to Laura San Giacomo?
Image
Laura San Giacomo became a household name with prominent roles in the edgy indie drama Sex, Lies, and Videotape and the iconic rom-com Pretty Woman. The actress continued to have massive success on the big screen, with prominent roles in Quigley Down Under, Where the Day Takes You, and Suicide Kings, appearing alongside some of Hollywood’s most revered performers like Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Tom Selleck, and Christopher Walken.

Despite such an illustrious cinema career, Giacomo shifted her focus to the small screen after the birth of her son, opting for television roles in order to remain more present in his life. She would go on to headline the sitcom Just Shoot Me!, and later portrayed memorable characters in Saving Grace, Veronica Mars, NCIS, and Animal Kingdom.

The actress is likely to always be remembered for her performance as the sassy gal pal of Roberts’ character Vivian in Pretty Woman...

Will Smith’s 14 Best Movies Ranked
Image
Three decades into his career, Will Smith remains one of the most successful actors of his generation and one unafraid to continue to pursue the possibility of blockbuster domination alongside smaller projects only he could make happen. Smith’s initial foray into the movie business included supporting roles in “Where the Day Takes You” (1992), “Made in America” (1993), and a co-lead role in “Six Degrees of Separation” (1993): dramas that drew some critical acclaim but yielded very limited box office.

Then the actor reconsidered his career objectives, realizing how important box office was to longevity, and researched what ingredients were necessary to turn movies into blockbusters. It worked.

Over the following decade, the vast majority of the movies he starred in met those requirements — high budget, high concept projects, typically released in the summer, with the potential to make a lot of money: the “Men in Black” and “Bad Boys” franchises,...

‘Mudbound’ Finally Hits Netflix Next Month, Plus Music and Film Documentaries
Original (2009)
Fall is upon us, and with it a fresh new crop of Netflix movies to curl up with when the weather starts to turn. Next month’s most exciting addition to the streaming service is “Mudbound,” the Southern World Ward II epic from up-and-comer-turned-force-to-be-reckoned-with Dee Rees. Netflix sealed the biggest deal of this year’s Sundance Film Festival when it paid a whopping $12.5 million for “Mudbound,” setting a high bar for the drama. Balancing out the heavier fare are classic comedies like “Men In Black” and “Scary Movie,” as well as “Field of Dreams” and “42” for the baseball lovers.

The fresh crop also includes a bevy of critically acclaimed documentaries, such as “Eventual Salvation,” “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary,” and “Cuba and the Cameraman.” Jim Carrey’s creative process gets a deep dive in “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond,” which includes never-before-seen behind the scenes footage from Milos Forman...

Smith to Have One of His Worst Domestic Openings Ever: 'Focus'
'Focus' movie: Will Smith has third weakest weekend box-office debut of his career (photo: Will Smith in 'Focus') According to those referred to in polite society as "conservatives," winter storms and freezing temperatures are evidence that there's no such thing as global warming. Let's not even go there. Instead, let's focus (bad pun intended) on the Focus movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie as a con couple, which opened below expectations – with wintery weather as a possible culprit – in North America this weekend, February 27-March 1, 2015. According to box-office tracking, as late as a couple of days ago Warner Bros.' modestly budgeted Focus was expected to take in between $22-24 million. Barring a miracle akin to a sudden halt to rising ocean temperatures (pardon the hyperbole), that's not about to happen. Now, before I proceed: "modestly budgeted"? Well, for a Will Smith movie, $50 million – after...

Twin Peaks is coming back. Those are five words David Lynch fans having been waiting to hear for a long time. Have You Seen Will Smith's Feature Debut As Crippled Homeless Man In 1992's 'Where The Day Takes You'?
Often when discussions are had about Will Smith's early acting career, and the dramatic turns he made that were counter to his immensely popular "Fresh Prince" image, and which many consider some of his best acting work, his performance in Six Degrees Of Separation is the film that most mention. But I wonder how many of you have seen a little indie film, made a year before Six Degrees (1992) titled Where The Day Takes You, Big Willie's feature film debut, in which he co-stars with an ensemble cast of actors, in a story that centers on a group of teenage runaways, who form something of a family of their own, as they try to survive the streets of Los...

On Will Smith's Seemingly Strategic Aversion To Controversial Roles...
Editor's note: Worthy of a revisit a year later, in light of new discussion over Will Smith's seemingly fading star, and the choices he's made in recent years, including the latest, After Earth, out in theaters tomorrow. As anticipation for Quentin Tarantino’s visionary “Southern,” Django Unchained, nears a fever pitch, my thoughts have turned to the man who was initially approached to essay the role that eventually went to Jamie Foxx – and what his ultimate refusal of such a controversial role means on a macro level. With a filmography stretching back to 1992 (anyone remember Where the Day Takes You?), Will Smith has transformed himself from hip-hop pioneer to global megastar, arguably...

Will Smith Attached To Real-Life Drama American Can, Eyeing Thriller The Accountant
Looking at Will Smith's filmography, it's actually surprising how few films he's actually been in. Since making his feature debut in 1991's Where The Day Takes You he's only made 20 movies, which comes out to an average of only one film per year - far fewer than most A-list stars, who are typically able to pump out as many as three titles every twelve months. Now, however, it seems he's starting to up his game. In addition to having After Earth due out this summer - now one week earlier than previously thought - he has Akiva Goldsman's Winter's Tale in the works and just this week added the crime/romance Focus to his slate. And now it appears two more projects are on his radar. First up, Deadline reports that the actor is now attached to the drama American Can, which is currently targeting Ed Zwick to direct.

Dermot Mulroney Vs. Dylan McDermott
They're practically the same age, with names so similar they give dyslexics seizures, and both have played love interests of Julia Roberts. But Dermot Mulroney and Dylan McDermott are not the same person. We swear.

The two actors have both had steady careers, with Mulroney sticking mostly to character roles on the big screen ("Zodiac," "J. Edgar") while McDermott found fame on the boob tube starring in hit shows like "The Practice," "Dark Blue" and Ryan Murphy's current FX series "American Horror Story."

What would happen if these two went toe-to-toe for nine electrifying rounds in our ring of pop culture minutiae? With McDermott set to join Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis on the election trail in "The Campaign" this week, there's no better time than the present.

Best Movie Role

Dermot Mulroney: Randall Hertzel, "About Schmidt" (2002)

Dylan McDermott: Secret Service Agent Al D'Andrea, "In the Line of Fire" (1993)

Advantage: Mulroney,...

Mib III Director Says Will Smith “Owes Him His Career.” Based On Will’s First Roles, We Kind Of Agree.
Music Videos - Free Music Videos

Men In Black III hits theaters tomorrow, and director Barry Sonnenfeld could not be more thrilled…with how crazy successful he helped Will Smith become. “I’m so excited that I get to bring Will back to the big screen after four years of not being in the theaters,” Sonnenfeld gushed at the film’s premiere, reminiscing about the young actor he hired for the first Mib back in 1997. “In fact, we cast him from Fresh Prince. He hadn’t been in Independence Day or anything.” Joked Sonnenfeld, “I think Will Smith pretty much owes me his career.” The Hancock actor might not agree with the “entire career” part, but Smith definitely recognizes the films’ influence on his mega-stardom. “He hooked me up pretty good,” Will admitted. “This franchise is probably hands down the biggest franchaise of my career.” Laughs Smith, “I owe him a little bit.

The Actress Formerly Known As Lara Flynn Boyle
When we think of Lara Flynn Boyle—seen above at a screening of her 1992 film Where The Day Takes You last week—we think of the hot alien in Men in Black II who worked the hell out of a WonderBra. Or the hot lawyer in The Practice who worked the hell out of a sharp suit. So we never thought we’d ever say….what the hell, Lara Flynn Boyle? What happened to her? She’s like the love child of Melanie Griffith and Lisa Rinna (at the the height of her crazy-lips era). It’s like a face lift, botox and collagen decided to band together and screw the humanity out of her face.
