The court is gathering, and soon, one of literature’s greatest heroes will rob the rich and give to the poor in MGM+’s eagerly-awaited series, Robin Hood. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview Event, we’re excited to pull back the curtain and introduce audiences to two of the project’s main characters, who are played by very familiar faces. While many productions have attempted to tell the story first penned by Howard Pyle in 1883, this one promises to stand out from the crowd thanks to a cast consisting of Sean Bean (Game of Thrones) as the Sheriff of Nottingham, Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Lauren McQueen (Masters of the Air) as Marian, and on-the-rise War Machine star, Jack Patten, as the titular vigilante.

Veteran Hollywood director Michael Mann will be honored with the Lumière Award at the 2025 Lumière Festival, a French event focused on classic cinema.
Lumière Institute and festival director Thierry Frémaux called Mann — director of such features as Heat, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali and Collateral — a major artist “straight out of Hollywood mythology…whose mark on cinema is everlasting.”
In a statement, the Institut Lumière said Mann’s filmmaking was “both rooted in a strong Hollywood tradition and embodies a personal and innovative cinema through his choice of subjects, his approach to directing, storytelling and aesthetics. With true independence — and at times, a certain solitude — he is one of the most important filmmakers in the history of cinema.”

Apple TV+ has just unveiled the Chief of War trailer, and you weren’t ready for all that it brought. Jason Momoa has embodied the role of Hawaiian warrior, Ka’iana, striving to protect the islands by uniting them against colonization by the West. Critics and viewers alike were quick to compare it with Vikings, the cult classic with 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and we can’t disagree.
The larger-than-life characters, blood-soaked conflicts, and fierce battles for cultural identity depicted in Chief of War bear mythic resonance with the historical TV drama. It will be interesting to see whether Jason Momoa’s much-awaited passion project can achieve the kind of fame and glory Vikings did.

The Big Bear Film Festival — formerly known as the Green Jack International Film Festival — is launching September 24-29, the brainchild of the newly inaugurated Big Bear Film Institute. The famed California mountaintop destination, which has been seen in numerous films and television shows dating back a century, will host what the Bbfi is calling a “boundary breaking celebration” that encompasses not just film, but animation, podcasting, gaming, stand-up comedy, Indigenous storytelling, experimental sound design, and AI.
CEO Damien S. Navarro, who previously served as the executive director of Outfest, noted that over 400 titles have used Big Bear as a backdrop, including “Magnolia,” “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Creep,” “Gone with the Wind,” and “Old Yeller.”
“Its alpine terrain has doubled for the Rockies, Appalachians, and even European forests —making it one of the most versatile and under-celebrated locations in film history,” Navarro said.

Jason Momoa is ready for his new Apple TV+ show, Chief of War, and his fans can’t wait to see him in this groundbreakingly historic show. It’s a nine-episode drama series and premieres on August 1, 2025. The show delves into the deep history of the Hawaiian islands, the late 18th-century unification, offering the true story from the indigenous point of view.
Momoa was the obvious choice for this part, as he is deeply connected to his native Hawaiian roots. He plays the role of the warrior Kaʻiana. He is also the co-writer and co-creator of the series. The cast is mostly Polynesian, and the show has been filmed both in Hawaii and New Zealand, in an attempt to provide the most authentic depiction of the culture and history of Hawaii.

With Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier set to direct Marvel Studios' X-Men reboot, the rumour mill continues churning out possible names for the highly anticipated movie.
We're not putting too much stock into any of these casting claims, but following this past week's Professor X and Jean Grey rumours, there's a possible update on the McU's Magneto.
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Marvel Studios is eyeing three-time Oscar winner Sir Daniel Day-Lewis for the role of the Master of Magnetism. Would he ever really consider a superhero movie role? We wouldn't bank on it, though the same might have once been said for Sir Ian McKellen.
It's worth noting that this comes after the insider said, "No new [X-Men] cast will be introduced in the upcoming Avengers films, because the focus is on giving closure to the original characters. Casting hasn’t started yet because director Jake Schreier hasn’t officially signed on.

Michael Mann is now waiting to hear back from the studio after working on Heat 2 for over a year. Mann has stated that audiences are ready for a new story in the Heat universe. “It’s sustained in culture. It’s known,” Mann said. “I could delude myself into thinking that the whole world is familiar with it, but when you check out its prominence in home video for over 20 years, this thing really has legs. People are still watching it, people are still talking about it. It’s a brand. It’s kind of a Heat universe, in a way. And that certainly justifies a very large ambitious movie.“ It has also been rumored that his Ferrari star, Adam Driver, and Elvis star, Austin Butler, are attached as a young McCauley and Shiherlis, especially as Butler was training at a gun range last year.

Netflix' Best Western Created One of 2025's Most Tragic Love Stories (& It's Not the One Fans Think)
Quick LinksWho Was American Primeval's Jacob Pratt? What Happened to Jacob and Abish?
The following contains spoilers for American Primeval, now streaming on Netlflix. It also contains a mention of suicide.
With Westerns like Yellowstone reigniting the genre for TV, Netflix decided to take things in a raw and unadulterated direction. The streamer achieves this with the shockingly gory American Primeval, which focuses on the 1850s and the Utah War.
The series depicts American soldiers, the Mormons and Natives battling for territory. Along the way, the show maps out one of the most tragic love stories of its genre. But it's not the one fans think is on top of the list. It's a darker story, focusing on Dane DeHaan's Jacob Pratt and his wife, Abish.

Mann co-wrote the screenplay for The Last of the Mohicans, based on James Fenimore Cooper's novel and the 1936 movie adaptation.

No streaming service does a director retrospective like the Criterion Channel, and March offers two masters at opposite ends of exposure. On one side is Michael Mann, whose work from Thief through Collateral (minus The Keep) is given a spotlight; on the other is Alain Guiraudie, who (in advance of Misericordia opening on March 21) has five films arriving. (2001’s duet of That Old Dream That Moves and Sunshine for the Scoundrels have perhaps never streamed in the U.S. before.) Meanwhile, three noirs from Douglas Sirk are programmed alongside a Lee Chang-dong retrospective that features three new restorations.
Showcases will be staged for Dogme 95, Best Supporting Actor winners, and French Poetic Relaism. Michael Mann is one of the most versatile artists in cinema. He is a director, producer, camera operator, and, when parts call on him, an actor. At the helm of the 1992 frontier war film The Last of the Mohicans, starring the only actor to have won three Best Actor Oscars, Daniel Day-Lewis, Mann gave us one of his best projects. The Last of the Mohicans has aged well; more than three decades after its release, it still stands tall among its peers as arguably the greatest Western war movie of all time. An exhibition of Mann's directorial prowess, the film sits well among the top-rated flicks on Rotten Tomatoes, with an impressive 88% approval score. Its captivating storytelling is presented in a realistic portrayal of 18th-century America, and powered by unforgettable performances and Mann's brilliant direction that harmonizes action and emotion.

In the annals of Hollywood war films, there are many that movie fans would consider epics. The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, Hacksaw Ridge, and Dunkirk are some prime examples. However, there are Westerns and stories involving indigenous nations that are right up there.
Michael Mann directed The Last of the Mohicans over 30 years ago, which is an epic historical drama based on James Fenimore Cooper's novel and its 1936 adaptation. The 1992 movie The Last of the Mohicans, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is still regarded by many as the best Western war movie of all time, more than three decades after its original release. Meanwhile, Irish-British actor Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the most celebrated actors in history. Day-Lewis is the only actor to win three Best Actor Academy Awards, for his roles in My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012). He has also received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for movies, including In The Name of the Father (1993) and Phantom Thread (2017).
In the early stages of his career, Day-Lewis starred in the Western war movie The Last of the Mohicans, also one of Michael Mann's best movies, for which he served as director. Based on the 1826 novel by James Fenimore Cooper, the movie received a highly positive reception from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $143 million at the worldwide box office.

There's something about knowing a film is based on a true story or real history that makes it so much more engaging. Everything from WWII to the Battle of Thermopylae, and even the life story of Robbie Williams as a monkey have been brought to life on the big screen. While many films root their stories in real history, actual historical accuracy tends to get left on the cutting room floor. Thankfully, one historian is standing up to angry film fans across the world and is setting the record straight about five of the greatest historical movies of all time.
Historian Dan Snow of History Hit compiled the five best historical films of all time and, mercifully, tore them apart for historical inaccuracies. The list featured Gladiator, Apollo 13, The Last of the Mohicans, Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan. Starting out with Ridley Scott's seminal Gladiator, Snow wasted no time,...

From Isla Sorna to Boston, Massachusettes, Pete Postlethwaite appeared all over the map in his long and celebrated movie career. Born in Lancashire, England to a working-class family, Postlethwaite started his career on the stage, but quickly made his way into movies beginning in the middle of the 1970s. At first working under his full name, Peter Postlethwaite, Postlethwaite eventually shortened his credited name to "Pete Postlethwaite" after appearing in Ridley Scott's debut, The Duellists and Waterland.
With a face that looks like it was carved out of stone, flinty eyes that seem to glow in the dark, and a rough but crystal clear voice, Postlethwaite provides a screen presence few others have ever been able to match or mimic. He can play a frightening villain as well as he can a loving father. He's appeared in tiny independent films, large franchise fare, and plenty of odd, but fantastic movies in between.

One of the most memorable episodes of "Seinfeld" is named after the grand love story "The English Patient," which would go on to win the Best Picture Oscar a few weeks after the episode's airing on March 13, 1997. "Seinfeld" is known for finding humor in the small, ordinary things like disliking a movie and not understanding why it's so beloved. Everyone seems to love "The English Patient" — Elaine's boyfriend (who dumps her for disliking it), her friends, and even her boss who insists on taking Elaine after she lies about not having seen it. The World War II-era blockbuster is about a plane crash survivor with a burned face who recovers at a picturesque Italian monastery. While a kind nurse cares for him and tries to discover his forgotten identity, flashbacks reveal his passionate affair with a married Englishwoman.

Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann wants one of his most beloved movies, the only one to win an Oscar, to get a 4K Uhd release. The Last of the Mohicans, starring the iconic Daniel Day-Lewis, debuted in 1992 and is considered one of the director's best films.
In a recent sit-down with Collider to discuss the 25th anniversary of his 1999 film, The Insider, it was brought to Mann's attention that The Last of the Mohicans had not yet gotten a 4K Uhd release. He also discovered that The Insider and Thief are yet to arrive on 4K, denying the movies the benefits of the upgraded restoration. The Heat director is intent on righting these wrongs. "I didn't realize The Last of the Mohicans wasn't available in 4K," he said. "We absolutely gotta pursue that. Same thing with Insider."

Although The Core is largely forgotten now, this 2003 Aaron Eckhart vehicle beat James Cameron’s iconic 2009 blockbuster Avatar to one major sci-fi staple by six years. A lot of earlier movies inspired elements of the Avatar movies. South Park famously mocked the franchise as little more than a mashup of Dances With Wolves and The Smurfs, but everything from The Last of the Mohicans to Jurassic Park to Star Wars had a role to play in constructing director James Cameron’s immersive fictional world. Avatar: The Way of Water’s ending even borrows from Cameron’s own hit Titanic.

A who’s who of Indigenous film talent — including Dallas Goldtooth (Reservation Dogs, Echo), Amber Midthunder (Prey, Legion), Wes Studi (Heat, The Last of the Mohicans) and Graham Greene (Dances With Wolves, Wind River) — are set to star in Brave, a new dramedy from writer/director Steven Paul Judd (Echo, Dark Winds), The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The feature, currently in pre-production, will begin principal photography next summer on the Choctaw Nation Reservation in southeastern Oklahoma. It will be the first-ever feature film to be shot on Choctaw land. The project was developed in close cooperation with the Choctaw Nation, the third-largest Native tribe in the United States.
Brave tells the story of Uncle Jack (Goldtooth), a 15-year military vet with substance abuse issues who now works as the entertainment in his local Native casino. At the funeral of his estranged brother, Jack meets Jillian, his young niece, now an orphan.

Let's just cut the controversy off at the pass. Any movie that stars Jamie Foxx alongside Tom Cruise on its way to making over $200 million at the global box office is hard to sell as "underrated." However, in many ways, that's exactly what Michael Mann's Collateral has become.
Collateral is the story of Tom Cruise's lone-wolf killer, a man in an impeccable gray suit named Vincent, who, over the course of one long night, forces Jamie Foxx's unfortunate cab driver into taxing him around the city of Los Angeles as he takes out a series of five targets involved in a grand-jury case. At the time of its release, many wouldn't have considered Collateral to be director Michael Mann's best film, and yet, that's exactly what it might have become. Twenty years later, Collateral is one of the greatest crime-based thrillers ever made.

Marvel Comics' new "Ultimate" universe is now knee-deep in its publication, but that shouldn't scare new readers into missing out on "Ultimates" by Deniz Camp.
Set in a version of the Marvel Universe ("Earth-6160") where everything went wrong because of the evil Maker, "Ultimates" follows some familiar heroes trying to build the superhero team the world deserves. Will Smith is one of the few public figures who rooted himself as a pop culture giant out of obscurity and a career in rap music. Renowned as a globally celebrated actor, Smith became a page-turner for Hollywood with big draws such as Bad Boys, Independence Day, and the Men in Black franchise.

By the end of the 1990s, the Fresh Prince became one of the biggest stars of Hollywood, especially after his titular role in Ali (2002) shot him to an Academy Award nominee status. Soon, Will Smith began to exude a demigod-like presence with his blockbuster career and his unfailing cinematic masterpieces alongside a family that was first-generation Hollywood royalty… until slaps and entanglements unraveled the illusion like spaghetti.

In the early 2000s, director Michael Mann was coming off four hugely ambitious films — “The Last of the Mohicans,” “Heat,” “The Insider,” and “Ali” — and thinking about what to do next. He spent over a year working with John Logan on a Howard Hughes script that Martin Scorsese would ultimately direct as “The Aviator,” but its similarities to “Ali” made him wary of embarking on another epic.
“It was an internal conflict,” Mann said on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “In Ali’s case, it was about Ali determining his identity. ‘Who shall I be? Who shall I represent to the world?’ The quest he’s on is very similar to the Howard Hughes story.”
Luckily, another script came Mann’s way that was not only different from “Ali” but also from anything he’d done before. Stuart Beattie’s “Collateral” had the kind of intense conflict, rich characters, and...

Daniel Day-Lewis saw a career-defining moment with his portrayal of Christy Brown in My Left Foot at the 1990 Oscars. Day-Lewis's passion for artisanal crafts and family life led him to a sudden retirement announcement in 2017, which shocked Hollywood. The actor has a love of hand-made objects and woodworking, though he may also have a possible future in writing, showing his deep commitment to all pursuits.
The 62nd Academy Awards in 1990 saw a deep field in the Best Actor category. Morgan Freeman (Driving Miss Daisy), Tom Cruise (Born on the Fourth of July), and Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society) were present in the audience all of whom had given career-defining performances the year prior. Also present was Daniel Day-Lewis, already 32 years old and sporting long locks for his next major role in The Last of the Mohicans.
