Angelina Jolie And Denzel Washington's The Bone Collector Roles Came With A Stipulation
Image
Following the success of Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, Hollywood released an eight-year-long tidal wave of serial killer thrillers, each one pulpier than the last. This was the era of "Seven," "Copycat," "Along Came a Spider," "Jennifer 8," "See No Evil," "Eye of the Beholder," "Sliver," "Knight Moves," and any number of others. Right at the end of the decade came Phillip Noyce's 1999 thriller "The Bone Collector," based on the airport novel by Jeffery Deaver. Deaver's original novel was the first of the long-running Lincoln Rhyme series, a series that saw its 16th installment published in 2023. Rhyme, thanks to a spinal accident, could not move his body below his neck, and fought crime from his bed, deducting details, looking at pictures, and relying on his team.

In the film adaptation, Denzel Washington played Lincoln Rhyme and Angelina Jolie played his plucky crime-fighting partner, Amelia Donaghy.

Bird Box (2018) – What Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Sometimes books are mega hits and get turned into movies that take off. There’s just something that captures the zeitgeist and it’s destined to be. Harry Potter came out of nowhere and then turned into a franchise of books, video games, Lego sets, and of course movies. Other times, authors release something that will undoubtedly get picked up as the track record for success is already there. This is the Stephen King special or even Michael Crichton when he was still active. Adaptations can come from cases of re-adaptations like Dracula, Frankenstein, and other classics that get recycled over and over again, especially of they fall into the public domain. There’s the rare case, though, that an unknown author has a manuscript pop and movie studios jump at the chance to create something new. The journey and strange tale of the author of Bird Box falls under that last category.

Pierce Brosnan at an event for The Ghost Writer (2010)
Hulu New Releases: June 2021
Pierce Brosnan at an event for The Ghost Writer (2010)
Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.

The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!

Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
Hulu New Releases: February 2021
Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.

The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).

It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

Review: "ffolkes" (1980) Starring Roger Moore; Blu-ray Special Edition
Image
Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none

By Hank Reineke

There are times I wish my failing memory could serve me better, and here’s one example. I have a vague memory of staying up one night – circa 1980, I guess - to catch Roger Moore on one of those late night talk-shows. I was a huge James Bond fan and, as such, always desperate to mine any news, no matter how trivial, on any upcoming oo7 adventure. This was, of course, in the pre-internet era when insider information was relatively scarce outside of a morsel or two shared in fanzine or with a subscription to Variety.. In any event, don’t recall if Moore shared any information that night on the next scheduled Bond opus For Your Eyes Only (1981). I do clearly recall him discussing Andrew V. McLaglen’s ffolkes (better known in the United Kingdom, where the film was originally released,...

Stars: Dominique Swain, Felissa Rose, Lanett Tachel, Rich Finley, Madeleine Wade, Frankie Cullen, Meghan Deanna Smith, Gregory Blair, Jennifer Nangle, Tiffani Fest, Rachel Hardisty, Martin Harris, Monika Ekiert, Jody Barton, Danielle Taddei, Audriena Comeaux | Written and Directed by Jody Barton

The “…Jennifer” films are a series of strange beasts. The first, To Jennifer, was released in 2012 and was the first film (despite the claims from elsewhere) to be shot completely on an iPhone, the iPhone 5 in this case. The sequel, 2Jennifer, was a meta take on the franchise that saw the films director, Hunter Johnson, play a crazed fan who wanted to make a sequel to his favourite film To Jennifer and ended up killing the cast and filmmakers of Bressacks’ film! The third film, From Jennifer, wasn’t released until 2017 and is more of an homage to the first two films, featuring an actress called Jennifer, whose quest for...

Indie Thriller For Jennifer Continues a Long Running Horror Franchise
For Jennifer is the first film from director Jody Barton. This title follows 2 Jennifer, from 2016. In the sequel, a horror themed birthday party creates an accident. Now, the party-goers have come up with the idea to shoot their own film. Then, they discover that their film is related to a few that have already been made. Prolific filmmaker James Cullen Bressack (Pernicious) wrote the script for this feature. And, For Jennifer stars: Tiffani Fest (Circus of the Dead), Felissa Rose and Dominique Swain. If you missed the film's late March release, then you would not be the only one - with more details on For Jennifer below. The official synopsis also mentions Jennifer (Fest) and the danger she is in. When she begins filming her feature, she also puts her friends at risk. Uma Thurman and Andy Garcia in Jennifer 8 (1992)
Tiffani Fest & Felissa Rose in Trailer for Meta-Horror Film 'For Jennifer'
Uma Thurman and Andy Garcia in Jennifer 8 (1992)
"No one makes it out alive!" Jb Films has released a trailer for an indie meta-horror horror film called For Jennifer, which originally premiered back in 2018 and is just now getting a VOD release. This is the latest in the Jennifer series created by Jody Barton and James Cullen Bressack. Jennifer, Stefanie, and Joey are making a movie. But soon the lines between what is a movie and what is real begin to disappear. And when making a horror movie, that can be a difference between life and death. Ooooooohhhhh so scary. The meta-horror aspect is because it's about a horror blogger who tries to make a horror movie who realizes there are other horror movies just like it and figures out she is also in a horror movie. Whew. The film stars Tiffani Fest, Felissa Rose, Dominique Swain, Lanett Tachel, Rich Finley, and Nick Kekeris. This is super duper,...

Spanning 13 countries, this year’s shortlist of 20 titles includes Tamika Guishard’s African dance-driven feature “Rhythm in Blues;” Daresha Kyi’s U.S. documentary “Mama Bears” which follows conservative Christian mothers whose lives are transformed as they accept their Lgbtq children; Ahd Kamel’s Saudi Arabian feature “My Driver and I” set in 80s and 90s and centering on an unlikely friendship between a privileged Saudi girl and her Nubian driver; and Laura Moss’ feature debut “Birth/Rebirth,” a female-driven Frankenstein adaptation.

Spielberg's Best Pictures and New DVDs
Time to check in to see which movies we all can check back in with or catch up with now that they've hit the home market. The big title, Oscar wise is Steven Spielberg's 10th Best Picture nominee as a director, the cold war drama Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance both doing fine work as a lawyer and the spy he must bargain with for a prisoner of war trade. Only one of Spielberg's directorial efforts has ever won Best Picture (Schindler's List, 1993) but which is your favorite? I'd rank them like so...

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Schindler's List (1993) Jaws (1975) E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) Lincoln (2012) The Color Purple (1985) Bridge of Spies (2015) Saving Private Ryan (1998) Munich (2005) War Horse (2011)

With the disclaimer that everyone knows I'm not a Spielberg aficionado really (the top three are the only ones I'm completely wild about from this list...

Lance Henriksen: The Hollywood Interview
Lance Henriksen: A Survivor’s Tale

A seminal event happened to actor Lance Henriksen in his late teens that serves as the perfect metaphor for his life: Henriksen was working at a rural New Mexico gas station, and was taken in by the couple who owned it. They had a teenage daughter a couple years his junior. One day, figuring Lance and his daughter were getting a bit too chummy; the man drove Henriksen out to the middle of the desert. “All winter long, the frost has been pushing up these beautiful amethyst stones,” the man explained. “I’ll drop you off and you can collect them, then come back and sell them for a lot of money.” Henriksen stayed half the night, and then started to succumb to the desert’s freezing temperatures. “I dug a hole and buried myself up to my chest, with a fire in front of me.

Supporting Actors: The Overlooked and Underrated (part 5 of 5)
Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery in State Of Grace (Phil Joanou, 1990, USA):

Long considered one of the most talented actors in cinema, it’s very strange that his outstanding acting as the younger brother of Ed Harris’ local crime boss in this underrated film doesn’t get talked about nearly enough when discussing Oldman’s body of work. This is a must-see performance for all Oldman fans. For the record, State Of Grace is a far better Irish mob film than The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006, USA), primarily because it contains much better acting across the board. Oldman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/France).

Other notable Gary Oldman performances: Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987, USA), Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, USA), True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993, USA), Leon: The Professional (Luc Besson, 1994, France), Air Force One (Wolfgang Petersen, 1997, USA), The Contender (Rod Lurie,...

Mark Kermode's DVD round-up
Contagion; Immortals; The Rum Diary

One of the most likable things about the prolific Steven Soderbergh is just how eager he is to embrace (and subvert) the traditions of genre cinema. While other Cannes-favourite "auteur" directors may claim flatulently that their work is too personal for conventional labels (ha!), Soderbergh flits nimbly from big-budget crime caper to hand-held docudrama (the Oceans franchise, Full Frontal), from head-cracking action to arty angst (sex, lies, and videotape), from conspiracy thriller to political biopic (Michael Clayton, Che) and from sci-fi to sexposé (Solaris, The Girlfriend Experience) with ease.

His current cinema release, Haywire, casts mixed martial arts star Gina Carano as a high-kicking secret agent, lending a big-screen sheen to the straight-to-video genre of which Cynthia Rothrock was once queen bee. Meanwhile his viral outbreak movie Contagion (2011, Warner, 12) hits the DVD shelves, taking its lead from such time-honoured disaster epics as Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno,...

Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) acts in his second movie adapted by a Hunter S. Thompson novel in The Rum Diary, following 1998′s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Depp quickly finds himself caught between a beautiful woman (Amber Heard, Drive Angry) and her fiance (Aaron Eckhart, Love Happens), a shady American businessman who wants to turn the island into a capitalist paradise for the wealthy. The Rum Diary Review
To many he’s known as Captain Jack Sparrow and while Captain Jack has missed the boat in his last few outings, the man who plays him, Johnny Depp is most certainly back on the boat in The Rum Diary. Based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel, The Rum Diary has not been without its ups and downs. It’s director Bruce Robinson wanted nothing to do with the directors chair. Sure he’d do the screenplay, but that was it. The man hadn’t directed anything since Jennifer Eight back in 1992. Constant persistence from the one of the biggest movie stars in the world didn’t convince Robinson to shout action. Eventually, the phone calls from Depp got so frequent that Robinson threatened Captain Jack with a lawyer. Depp’s persistence paid off and Robinson finally took on the directorial challenge of bringing The Rum Diary to the big screen.

Interview: Bruce Robinson On Coming Out Of Retirement For The Rum Diary
The Rum Diary (my review here) is out this week. It’s based on an early Hunter S. Thompson novel about a journo who goes to Puerto Rico, where he lives on rum, lust and righteous indignation as he stumbles through the incendiary environment. But the most exciting thing about ‘The Rum Diary’ is that it brought director Bruce Robinson out of retirement.

The man behind the funniest British film ever (this has been scientifically proven by boffins at the University of Svalbard) is an enigma. After ‘Withnail & I’, his first major foray into Hollywood directing, ‘Jennifer 8′, was such a horrific experience that he vowed never to direct again.

Johnny Depp, it seems, was the man to tempt him from his cinematic celibacy. But the experience hasn’t been a whole heap better in many respects, a clearly-troubled and pleasantly candid Bruce Robinson explained to us last week.

Johnny Depp is back as a very different Hunter S Thompson
Johnny Depp's new project seems a far cry from Jack Sparrow, but John Patterson finds a case of yo-ho-hum with this new bottle of rum

• Johnny Depp interview: 'I'm not ready to give up my American citizenship'

When Johnny Depp was shooting Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas in the late-90s, he got a call from Bill Murray, who nearly two decades earlier had also played Gonzo kingpin Hunter S Thompson in the largely forgettable Where The Buffalo Roam. Make your next role drastically different from Thompson, Murray advised Depp, "Otherwise you'll find yourself 10 years from now still doing him."

Here we are, not just 10 but nearly 15 years later, facing The Rum Diary, which, precisely in line with the prognostications of the Nostradamus-like Murray (who knew?), stars Johnny Depp as a very lightly fictionalised version of the young Hunter S Thompson – although it's a very different, more realistic performance.

Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
Johnny Depp: 'I was a real pest with Bruce Robinson over Rum Diary'
Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
Johnny Depp has said that he had to be "a real pest" to coax Bruce Robinson into directing The Rum Diary. The Withnail & I helmer had not directed a movie since 1992's Jennifer 8 before agreeing to adapt Hunter S Thompson's novel. Depp told ShortList: "I was a real pest. I just kept coming at him. "I understand someone who makes that decision and says, 'I'm done with this cinema game and all those nasty bits that come with it', but Bruce was my dream for The Rum Diary and he was Hunter's too. So I had to pursue him until he kicked me in the mid-section." > Johnny Depp's The Rum Diary - two new posters

Bruce Robinson's (and Johnny Depp's) "The Rum Diary"
"Johnny Depp's quasi-filial bromance with Hunter S Thompson has now extended well beyond the celebrated gonzo journalist's death," writes Salon's Andrew O'Hehir, "with consequences that are a lot like the relationship itself: Strange, endearing and a little bit embarrassing. Depp personally financed and supervised the firing of Thompson's earthly remains out of a cannon at the writer's 2005 funeral, an event captured in Alex Gibney's documentary Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr Hunter S Thompson (narrated, of course, by Johnny Depp). Having played Thompson's most famous alter ego, Raoul Duke, in Terry Gilliam's psychotronic 1998 version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas — a flawed film, but very much worth a second look in its recent Criterion release — Depp now returns to the Thompson well of booze and acid for a second dip."

"To get to the heart of the mess that is The Rum Diary," writes Gustavo Turner in the La Weekly,...

‘The Rum Diary’ amounts to muddled Hunter S. Thompson hagiography
The Rum Diary

Written by Bruce Robinson

Directed by Bruce Robinson

USA, 2011

It’s been nearly two decades since writer-director Bruce Robinson made a movie (1992′s Jennifer 8 was the last). When directors emerge from long hiatuses, the outcome is rarely positive; the films that result from these long periods of inactivity often wind up either overstuffed, undercooked, or weirdly out-of-time. The Rum Diary, Robinson’s long-gestating adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s vaguely autobiographical novel, somehow manages to be be all three.

Set in 1962, Diary stars Johnny Depp (effectively Thompson’s Hollywood ambassador at this point, having previously played another Thompson surrogate in Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as well as narrating Alex Gibey’s bracing Thompson doc Gonzo), in mostly-wacky mode as Paul Kemp, an ambitious journalist who eagerly nabs an unwanted position at the San Juan Star, an English-language newspaper in Puerto Rico.

Uma Thurman and Andy Garcia in Jennifer 8 (1992)
Depp Convinced Robinson To End Retirement For Rum Diary
Uma Thurman and Andy Garcia in Jennifer 8 (1992)
Director Bruce Robinson only agreed to step behind the camera for The Rum Diary after Johnny Depp "hounded" him into taking charge.

Robinson vowed never to direct another film after 1992 flop Jennifer 8, and stuck to his word until Depp contacted him about the movie adaptation of his late pal Hunter S. Thompson's book.

And the director is delighted he overcame his reluctance to tackle the project.

He tells Total Film magazine, "The worst creative experience I've ever had in my life was working in the studio system making that f**king Jennifer 8. It was so catastrophically painful for me that I swore I would never direct a film again, and I kept my promise for 17 years.

"(Depp's) confidence in me, saying you've got to direct this - I was very reluctant and resistant to the proposition... he sort of hounded me and said you're doing it. Next thing, there he was in front of the lens and I'm doing it! I hadn't done it for so long.

"Because of the power (Depp's) got I felt very relaxed making the film and felt like I was making a great movie. Johnny seems to think that Hunter would be over the moon with it, and that does me (makes me happy)."...

The Rum Diary TV spots
New TV spots for The Rum Diary, starring Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins. After seeing these new spots, I'm super-keen to catch the FilmDistrict adventure drama helmed by Bruce Robinson, who scripts from the novel by Hunter S. Thompson. It's been so long since Robinson took the wheel, almost twenty years actually. His last time at the helm was 1992's Jennifer Eight, starring Andy Garcia, Uma Thurman, Lance Henriksen and John Malkovich. Prior to that, Robinson directed How to Get Ahead in Advertising with Richard E. Grant and Rachel Ward starring.

Fantastic Review: ‘Blind’ Is a Must-See Thriller (And No, I’m Not Ashamed)

Her latest attempt to bring him home from the b-boy club scene sees him handcuffed inside the car, but when she loses control of he wheel the resulting accident claims his life and leaves her blind. The decisions she made that night get her removed from the police force, but it’s the guilt that weighs the heaviest. Three years later she’s living with her Labrador guide dog named Wisey and still struggling with her impairment. Frustrated with her life, she takes a late night taxi ride that quickly becomes a hit and run. She reports it, but the police are unclear as to how a blind person can be a witness so they assign the case to a throwaway detective (Jo Hie-bong). Blind – Fantastic Fest Review
The visually impaired protagonist is a common thread in the suspense/thriller genres, so it only makes sense that South Korea jump on board. From See No Evil, Hear No Evil to Jennifer 8, blindness has made for an interesting character trait over the years, and director Sang-hoon Ahn (Arang) starts out with an intriguing concept that suggests more promise than is actually produced, developing lead character Min Soo-ah (Ha-Neul Kim) through a tragic accident that kills her brother, for which she blames herself. Her blindness is an unfortunate additional result of the automobile accident.

We jump three years into the future and while Min Soo-ah is struggling to deal with both her handicap and her guilt, we’re introduced to the antagonism, a serial killer is going through female victims like there’s a two-for-one sale on helpless young women. The serial killer, whom is extremely calm and arrogantly confident,...

New poster for Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary
Bruce Robinson is bringing Hunter S Thompson's The Rum Diary to the big screen, with the help of Johnny Depp. Here's the poster to prove it...

For his next movie, Johnny Depp is heading back to ground he previously trod in Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, the Terry Gilliam film in which he portrayed author Hunter S Thompson.

With The Rum Diary, Depp is now appearing in a film based on a Thompson book, and what’s particularly interesting about this one is the man who’s directing.

That man is Bruce Robinson, who brought us Withnail And I and How To Get Ahead In Advertising. It’s Robinson’s first directorial effort since Jennifer 8, way back in 1992, and The Rum Diary was actually shot back in 2009.

The movie co-stars Aaron Eckhart and Richard Jenkins, and is arriving in Us cinemas next month. With that in mind, here...

See 25 Best Serial Killer Movies of All Time – Part 1

13- Jennifer Eight (1992)

This is one of those classic serial killer films that came earlier than the others. A serial killer of blind girls, now there’s an interesting concept. This film was an earlier role for Uma Thurman who played the blind girl Helana Robertson. I believe this film brought her name into higher acting circles that attracted roles such as in Pulp Fiction. A different concept that worked placing this film among The greats of serial killer genre movies.

‘The Rum Diary’ starring Johnny Depp – trailer review
The Rum Diary

Directed by: Bruce Robinson

Starring: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart

Rating: R

Release Date: October 28, 2011

Trailer Score: 7/10

Thoughts by Tsr: Where do I begin? There’s a lot to digest here. The trailer starts out modestly enough, and as it unfolds becomes more and more frenetic, more and more enticing.

I would have given this trailer a higher score, as it did succeed in the whetting of my filmic appetite, but alas, a 7/10 is all I can muster — I’ve heard some big-time negative rumblings about this film (I have a close friend who worked on the film, an informant, let’s call him), and it’s all too much to ignore. Via my informant, I learned that this film has tested with audiences appallingly (on many different occasions), and that for the longest time The Rum Diary couldn’t find a single studio interested in distribution/exhibition rights.

Watch Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary Trailer
Check out the new trailer for Johnny Depp’s The Rum Diary, due in theaters October 28.

Johnny Depp is a machine, an unnaturally youthful and nearly infallible creative machine. The Rum Diary is his newest starring vehicle, a long time gestated, adapted from Hunter S. Thompson’s book of the same name. From the trailer, the film looks fun and features a respectable cast including Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins.

As if the cast wasn’t enough to justify seeing The Rum Diary, the film was written and directed by Bruce Robinson… wait, what? Ok, I didn’t just hear you say “the guy who made Jennifer 8,” because (while that’s a modestly decent film) the man was a cultural filmmaking icon of the ’80s! For those of you unfamiliar with his early work, go out this weekend and track down Withnail & I (1987) and How To Get Ahead In Advertising...

Hunter S. Thompson in Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008)
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp Get Cozy in New Image from The Rum Diary
Hunter S. Thompson in Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (2008)
Hunter S. Thompson's novel The Rum Diary, written in 1959 but not published until 1998 -- the year Johnny Depp channeled Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas -- tells the tale of Paul Kemp, an American journalist who finds himself living and drinking among expats in 1950s Puerto Rico. There he meets Chenault, the ravishing girlfriend of another man, with whom he becomes obsessed. After the jump see Depp and Amber Heard getting cozy as Kemp and Chenault in a still from the October release, adapted by writer-director Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I, Jennifer 8).

New Photo from 'The Rum Diary' with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard
We've already seen a couple first look photos of Johnny Depp, but since they debuted last summer, we've yet to see much more from the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's novel The Rum Diary, his very first book as a matter of fact. With the film slated to hit theaters in limited release on October 28th, it's surprising that we've yet to see a trailer for the film, and that may not be a good sign, even with a name like Depp involved. While I'm still hoping for a trailer soon, in the meantime Gk Films (via ComingSoon) released a new photo of Depp playing journalist Paul Kemp and Amber Heard as Chenault. See it below! Here's the new photo of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in The Rum Diary: Based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel, The Rum Diary, directed by Bruce Robinson (Jennifer 8), follows Depp as Paul Kemp,...

Here’s the first poster for Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Ron Perlman and Demi Moore’s new movie, Bunraku which comes to us from Arc Entertainment. We’ve had a trailer for the film which you can see here but I do rather like this first poster!

It’s directed by Guy Moshe and will feature at the Festival during the September 9th-19th, 2010.

Here’s the synopsis:

In a world with no guns, a mysterious drifter (Josh Hartnett), a young samurai and a bartender (Woody Harrelson) plot revenge against a ruthless leader (Ron Perlman) and his army of thugs, headed by nine diverse and deadly assassins. Sweet Karma (2009) Movie Trailer: Andrew Thomas Hunt, Shera Bechard
The Sweet Karma Trailer has premiered. Andrew Thomas Hunt‘s Sweet Karma (2009) movie trailer stars Shera Bechard, John Tokatlidis, Frank J. Zupancic, Christian Bako, and Laura McLean. Sweet Karma‘s plot synopsis: “Sweet Karma…follows Karma Balint a shy, mute Russian girl whose sister Anna left for Canada with bright hopes of making some money for the two of them. When Karma discovers that Anna’s body has been found in the woods, the apparent victim of a Russian mafia hit, Karma sets off to infiltrate the criminal underworld to avenge her sister. Her journey takes her through the twisted underbelly of society leaving behind death and mayhem in her wake.”

This film looks as though it has a little Enter the Void, mixed with some elements from Taken, Human Trafficking, and X. The mute angle should throw a twist on how Karma Balint communicates with people she does not know.

Looking back at Bruce Robinson’s Jennifer Eight
Bruce Robinson’s attempt at a Hollywood thriller, Jennifer Eight, was given a lukewarm reception in 1992. Zoë looks back at one of the writer/director’s less appreciated films...

Bruce Robinson is the director of cult classic, Withnail And I, and the hero of the upraised gems of British cinema and Hollywood. Not the most likely combination in the world. However, it created one of the best thrillers ever to come out of the film factory during the thriller boom of the 1990s.

Jennifer Eight was released in 1992. Starring Andy Garcia and Uma Thurman, it told the story of a serial killer who specialised in blind victims. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson, it was his attempt at commercial cinema, but was it to be a cinematic revolution?

Jennifer Eight is set in the small town of Eureka. Eureka was a quiet and extremely rainy little town until John Berlin arrived.

The Notable Films of 2011: Part Eleven
Prom

Opens: April 29th 2011

Cast: Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang

Director: Joe Nussbaum

Summary: Portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite. For Nova Prescott, it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events.

Analysis: Disney's attempt at creating the next "High School Musical" franchise for itself, this teen romantic comedy is a batch of clique cliches - the beauty queen, the rebel with better hair than anyone else in the film, the handsome yet dumb foreign exchange student, the 'so above it' geek who really wants to belong, and at least one or two 'fugly' girls.

It's all very "The Breakfast Club" meets "10 Things I Hate About...

Leaked Emails: Anti-WikiLeaks Security Firm Targeted Journalists
A cache of emails leaked by the Anonymous collective indicates dirty tricks were considered against Salon's Glenn Greenwald; the New York Times's Jennifer 8. Lee and The Guardian's James Ball also appear to have been monitored--they're part of a "sabotage" PowerPoint.

New evidence leaked to the internet by the Anonymous collective seems to indicate that well-connected private security firms were targeting journalists sympathetic to WikiLeaks. This is a troubling sign of events to come as corporations, governments and web collectives such as WikiLeaks and Anonymous engage in continued online combat.

A cache of hacked emails from corporate security firm HBGary Federal that targeted Anonymous, strongly implies that they and others were pitching hit pieces on journalist Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com and monitoring James Ball of The Guardian and Jennifer 8. Lee of the New York Times, along with other journalists. The ultimate goal appears to be discrediting the journalists...
