Initially when I stumbled upon this 1993 action movie titled "Excessive Force" by sheer random luck here in 2025, I thought it was Willem DaFoe on the front of the movie's cover. Obviously it wasn't. Regardless, I had never heard about the movie prior to sitting down to watch it, so I didn't know what I was in for.
Now, writer Thomas Ian Griffith, whom also starred the movie, actually wrote a rather enjoyable script and storyline for the movie. Sure, it was pretty straightforward and archetypical for an early 1990s movie such as this, but who cares? The movie was enjoyable and entertaining, and isn't that the sole purpose of a movie? I was genuinely entertained throughout the course of the 87 minutes that the movie ran for.
I was rather impressed with the cast ensemble in the movie, as it has some pretty talented performers, such as Lance Henriksen, Tony Todd, James Earl Jones, Burt Young and Thomas Ian Griffith. Needless to say that the acting performances were good.
With "Excessive Force" being an action movie, with elements of crime to it, then there is a hefty amount of action throughout the course of the movie, and it just made watching it all the more enjoyable.
This was definitely a nice surprise of a movie, and it was one that I really enjoyed. And it is also one that I would recommend for fans of action movies.
My rating of director Jon Hess's 1993 movie "Excessive Force" lands on a six out of ten stars.

- GoofsWhen approaching the crime scene at the garbage dump, the coroner has already laid out a body bag next to the dead body. For the close up however, the same body bag is being placed next to the body.
- Alternate versionsThe UK video was cut by 26 seconds with edits to kicks and punches, a man's head being pushed through a car window, a dustbin lid beating, and a man's legs being hit with a baseball bat. The cuts were fully waived for the DVD release.
