John Hughes was the patron saint of adolescents who found great success with a series of hit comedies, most of them centering around the plight of teenagers. Yet how many of those titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films as both a writer and director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1950, Hughes first came to the attention of Hollywood as a writer after penning “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983) and “Mr. Mom” (1983). That financially successful one-two punch landed him his first directing gig: “Sixteen Candles” (1984). A tender coming-of-age story about a teenage girl (Molly Ringwald) suffering one indignity after another on her sweet sixteen firmly established him as the premiere helmer of adolescent comedies, leading to “The Breakfast Club” (1985), “Weird Science” (1985), and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986).
Yet Hughes also excelled at entertainments outside the classroom, including the road trip farce “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” (1987), starring...

John Candy was hands-down one of the greatest comedic performers of all-time. But after starring in classics like Uncle Buck, Spaceballs and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Candy’s final film job was playing the drunken wagoneer in the disappointing Western parody Wagon’s East.
Or was it?
While Candy died during the making of Wagon’s East, Michael Moore’s Candy-starring Canadian Bacon actually was released even later, due to a delay caused by distribution problems. But on IMDb, Candy’s last credited film role is in 1996’s The Magic 7. Which begs the question: What the fuck is The Magic 7?
Reportedly, The Magic 7 was an environmentally-conscious children’s movie that combined live-action scenes and animated segments. The production boasted a wildly eclectic cast of megastars, including Michael J. Fox, Demi Moore, Meryl Streep, the late Madeline Kahn, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Bette Midler.

Steve Martin is a ludicrously talented human being. He's a brilliant stand-up comedian, a fine actor, a skilled magician, a masterful humorist (that means he's funny when he writes), an art collector of tremendous discernment and, above all, an assassin with the banjo. He's gone from being an entertainment phenomenon best known for singing about King Tut to an entertainment phenomenon best known for making mirth with Martin Short. In between, he wrote and starred in classic comedy films like "The Jerk," "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," "The Man with Two Brains," "Roxanne," "L.A. Story" and "Bowfinger," and just plain old acted in "Three Amigos," "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," and "Parenthood."
Steve Martin is a national treasure (just watch his "Steve! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces" documentary on Apple+ if you don't believe me). He deserves the very best in life. So why, oh why, has he...

The Brat Pack dominated the 1980s with their presence in coming-of-age films, yet one creative has always stood out as one of their favorite partners—John Hughes. Though the writer-director is a defining voice in comedy from the era, delivering classics like Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Home Alone, and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, some of his best work has come with the young, fast-rising stars. Their defining achievement, The Breakfast Club, set a particularly high bar for teen movies, with Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, and Anthony Michael Hall coming together for a story all about overcoming differences to find understanding in each other. From the stars' experience, that inclusionary message was reflected in how Hughes treated them while shooting their big hit.

We love a good celebrity cameo, especially when it comes with one adorable yet a tad bit dysfunctional family. When Kevin Hart paid a visit to the set of Modern Family, we knew that it was going to be a good episode and the show really didn’t disappoint. The actor/comedian played the guest role of Andre, the Dunphys’ neighbor. Andre had been living in the same neighborhood as Phil and the clan for nearly a decade but they somehow never crossed paths.

When their friendship blossomed, Andre gave Phil the confidence he was doing just fine without. What resulted was a series of hilarious and wholesome moments that once again proved why Modern Family is a staple in the television industry.

Quick Links John Hughes Left a Profound Impact On American Comedy Films Drillbit Taylor Was One of the Funniest Yet Most Overlooked Comedies of the 2000s Why Wasn't John Hughes' Name Attached To Drillbit Taylor?
Best known for writing and even directing such classics as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Home Alone, and The Breakfast Club, John Hughes established an impressive legacy as one of the most influential screenwriters and filmmakers of his era. His final film, however, was one that not many knew that he was involved in. While he's credited under a pseudonym, given the plot and setting of the film, it certainly sounds like something he would have come up with. Starring Owen Wilson, 2008's Drillbit Taylor carries the sort of quirky plot and characters that would normally be found in one of Hughes' works, but comes across more like a product of Judd Apatow. ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is one of the most successful movies released this year, grossing over $1 billion at the box office and restoring hope that the MCU isn’t beyond saving.
Ever since the film was first announced, fans were thrilled.
The movie’s production was closely followed by millions worldwide, and as a result, Reynolds admitted that leaks and spoilers kept him awake at night. Despite all the hype, the ‘Deadpool’ threequel almost never came to be, and not for a lack of trying.
In previous interviews, Reynolds revealed that he pitched several different story ideas for Deadpool & Wolverine, but Marvel Studios shot them all down. These ideas ranged from a Rashomon-style story to a Christmas adventure involving Santa.
In his latest interview with Indiewire, Levy revealed they were on the verge of abandoning their plans for ‘Deadpool 3,’ feeling stuck on how to integrate Deadpool’s grounded tone into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Chevy Chase's 35-year-old Christmas comedy cements its status as an iconic holiday movie with its latest streaming success. After becoming the breakout star of the first season of Saturday Night Live during the 1970s, Chase left the sketch show in its second season and went on to become a comedic lead, starring in some of the most successful comedies of the 1980s. These include Caddyshack, Caddyshack II, Fletch, Fletch Lives, Oh! Heavenly Dog, Modern Problems, Spies Like Us, and Three Amigos.
One of Chase's most successful comedy ventures of the 1980s was the National Lampoon's Vacation movies, starting with the 1983 film. Inspired by John Hughes' short story Vacation '58 originally published in National Lampoon magazine, the films follow the chaotic misadventures of the Griswold family and their well-meaning yet hapless patriarch, Clark Griswold, whose attempts to create the perfect vacations for his family spiral into disastrous and hilariously awkward situations.

Though she had been a working actor since the early 2000s, it wasn't until 2015's Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation that Rebecca Ferguson became an in-demand movie star. She would reprise her role as slippery spy Ilsa Faust in two acclaimed Mission: Impossible sequels, becoming a fan-favorite element of that franchise. Ferguson, however, has also found success in a number of projects outside of the hit Tom Cruise action saga.
Ferguson appeared in Life in 2017, an inventive sci-fi horror, before then appearing opposite Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman (2017). Ferguson's next major franchise role arrived in 2021 with Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021), and she's now arguably just as well known for playing Lady Jessica as she is for playing Ilsa in Mission: Impossible. Ferguson is expected to reprise the role for Dune: Part Three, which is in development, but she's also been exploring the realm of sci-fi in the world of streaming TV.

Since the 1990s, Stiller has been a consistent comedic presence in film and television, starting with his sketch comedy series, The Ben Stiller Show. After beginning his career in television, Stiller transitioned to film acting and starred in a string of successful studio comedies, such as There’s Something About Mary, Zoolander, Along Came Polly, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Tropic Thunder, and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. However, since the mid-2010s, Stiller has shifted back to television, directing episodes of Severance and other shows. There’s arguably no better Thanksgiving movie than Planes, Trains and Automobiles, John Hughes’ classic road comedy about two strangers (played by Steve Martin and John Candy) who bond while trying to make their way back home for the holidays. It’s not just funny, it’s extremely heartwarming — at least, for those who don’t subscribe to the theory that Candy’s character murdered his wife and keeps her skeletal remains in that trunk.
One memorable joke from the movie wasn’t even a joke, exactly. During their travels, Candy’s character Del Griffith can be seen reading a book: an old paperback copy of a Canuck-themed porn novel called The Canadian Mounted.
The screenplay did spell out that Del is reading a “pornographic novel” and originally contained a scene in which Del remarks that he finished the book (calling it a “filthy goddarn thing”). But the title of...

John Hughes is responsible for the greatest Thanksgiving movie of all time, 1987’s poignant Planes, Trains & Automobiles. This Steve Martin and John Candy-led classic has become a perennial and a movie tons of folks have probably been revisiting this week. However, about four years later, in 1991, John Hughes made another Thanksgiving movie in the same vein, Dutch. Despite being a pretty solid movie with a very recognizable cast, it’s a hard movie to track down nowadays.
Dutch is very much in the vein of Planes, Trains & Automobiles in that it pairs a snooty, white-collar guy with a more down-to-earth, blue-collar kind of guy. The big twist here is that the white-collar guy is a kid, with Ethan Embry (then known as Ethan Randall) playing a prep-school kid who winds up on a long journey home for Thanksgiving with his mom’s new boyfriend, Dutch, played by Ed O’Neill.

It’s Thanksgiving time, and one of the most beloved Thanksgiving movies comes from none other than 80s comedy maestro John Hughes, with the turkey holiday classic, Planes, Trains & Automobiles. The buddy comedy is a classic tale of a journey to be home in time for Thanksgiving dinner, but with travel being so tumultuous around this time, our star, Steve Martin, finds himself stalled and dragging along an unwelcomed companion with John Candy in one of his most famous roles.
About two years ago, the movie was re-released in 4K with a whole flurry of special features. One of the coolest, exclusive features for this release is the unveiling of never-before-seen deleted scenes revealing extended performances from the comedy duo. Deleted scenes aren’t anything new for classic releases. However, this set features a full 75 minutes of deleted and extended scenes that were uncovered from John Hughes’ estate from his own personal archives.

Paul Walter Hauser Wants to Team-up With Ryan Reynolds for a 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' Remake
The 1987 road trip comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles starring Steve Martin and John Candy has been a Thanksgiving favorite for many for some time. And while fans will understandably balk at the idea of a remake, that’s exactly what Emmy Award winner and Cobra Kai star Paul Walter Hauser teases when responding to a recent post about the beloved comedy by none other than Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds.
“I watch watch PTA a few times a year. Always hits harder at Thanksgiving. I miss everything about John Candy,” Reynolds said of the movie on X/Twitter while sharing a clip honoring the legacy of the late, great John Candy. In response, Paul Walter Hauser light-heartedly hinted that he would love to pay tribute to Candy’s role as shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith...and wants Ryan Reynolds to join him in Steve Martin’s role as advertising executive Neal Page.

Thanksgiving is an undersung holiday when it comes to movies, though a few notable examples celebrate the holiday surprisingly well. Compared to the many classic Christmas movies, Thanksgiving doesn't have as many cinematic representatives, with far less holiday trappings to base an entire feature film off of. However, several films have dared to take place during Thanksgiving or even center their entire plot around it, resulting in a variety of wildly differing stories featuring the famous traditional American feast.
Some Thanksgiving movies are traditional holiday films, evoking warm, cozy vibes or family-friendly laughs. Others are only technically Thanksgiving movies in the same way that Die Hard is technically a Christmas movie, taking place during the season without directly acknowledging it with narrative or themes. Regardless of the type, there are a few notable Thanksgiving movies that deserve a spot as a yearly tradition to view.

What better way to spend Thanksgiving Day than catching up on a classic comedy movie with your fam? Particularly, if it stars Steve Martin and the late John Candy. Yes, we are talking about the iconic Thanksgiving movie, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. A prolific actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician, Martin is a legend of comedy and his movies are an experience of their own kind, like this hilarious adventure flick. Planes, Trains and Automobiles follows Neal Page, an eccentric marketing executive who needs to reach home for Thanksgiving in no time. But when his flight gets delayed, and he meets an annoying salesman, Del Griffith, it leads to a series of misadventures and a journey that they’ll never forget. The 1987 feature film is written, directed, and produced by John Hughes, a filmmaker best known for his hugely successful comedies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Home Alone, The Breakfast Club,...

The huge success of “Deadpool & Wolverine” has inspired actor Ryan Reynolds to work on a new project with longtime collaborators Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, the three of them announced this week.
The new project is their fourth collaboration, following hits like “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project.” Reynolds stated that he would be writing the script for the next year, but he wouldn’t say what the plot was about.
The news comes right after “Deadpool & Wolverine” broke records at the box office. It has made $636 million in ticket sales in the United States, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. It has beaten blockbusters like “Barbie” to become the 12th highest-grossing movie of all time and the seventh-highest-earning Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

Ryan Reynolds’ brand of humor has made him a beloved star in Hollywood both on and off the screen, and it still doesn’t feel real to him — even when his movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” grosses more than $1.5 billion.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” became a box office behemoth, pulling in an astounding $636 million domestically and securing its place as the 12th highest-grossing film in history. It now sits just behind Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and ahead of Warner Bros.’ summer sensation “Barbie.” It’s also surpassed the 2019 thriller “Joker” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. And among Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe juggernauts, “Deadpool 3” claims the seventh spot, having recently overtaken “Iron Man 3” globally.
Reflecting on his latest blockbuster with Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Reynolds describes the whirlwind of emotions watching “Deadpool & Wolverine” break records. “It feels great,” he says with a laugh, “but I...

I remember the day — March 4, 1994 — when I learned that John Candy, big of heart and large of funny bone, had died from an apparent heart attack at age 43. I was a movie critic and a film writer in the Life section of USA Today, distracted by the Winter Olympics TV coverage of Nancy Kerrigan’s silver medal comeback. But the minute I heard that one of the warmest and funniest actors around had passed away, I poured myself immediately into writing his appreciation.
As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I was lucky to have early access to “Sctv,” the Canadian sketch-comedy counterpart to “Saturday Night Live,” long before the series was picked up by NBC. I was cued into the genius of Candy and his clowning cohorts Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Flaherty, Andrea Martin, Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as they inhabited sundry out-sized characters who worked at a fictitious television station.

To say that Ryan Reynolds and Disney might have seemed like odd bedfellows when the studio inherited the R-rated Deadpool franchise following the Fox merger is an understatement.
Reynolds — who wears many hats, including actor, marketer, branding expert and entrepreneur — was at the heart of the audacious marketing campaigns for the two first films (look no further than the poop emoji billboard for the first Deadpool movie that went viral, or Deadpool re-enacting Burt Reynolds’ iconic Cosmopolitan centerfold). How far would Disney go in pushing the boundaries, considering it isn’t in the habit of releasing R-rated movies, at least in modern times? (Its division Marvel Studios never has.)
It turns out Disney’s Asad Ayaz, chief branding officer for the entire conglomerate and president of marketing for the film studio in addition to Disney+, and his team were all in. The mash-up of Disney’s expertise and reach and Reynolds’ marketing savvy,...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe did not invent the post-credits scene, but it did popularize and standardized it in superhero blockbusters to the point where audiences are now expected to stay through the credits lest they miss out on some surprise, some tease of what is to come in the next movie, or simply a funny gag.
Some of the post-credits scenes in the MCU are good, great even, and some are terrible and a waste of time. We have met many MCU characters directly through post-credits scenes, starting with Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, and a few have made repeated appearances, but only one actor's had the honor of appearing in the most post-credits scenes. No, it's not Jackson, even if he kickstarted the Marvel post-credits scene trend in the first "Iron Man." Instead, the party in question in Chris Evans, whose hilarious cameo in "Deadpool and Wolverine" added...

March 4th marked thirty years since John Candy left this world at just the age of 43. His death, which came after a heart attack while filming Wagon's East, was a shock to fans worldwide, but in his short career, Candy left a lasting legacy as one of our greatest comedic actors. From his time on Sctv, to his domination of the 1980s with movies like Spaceballs and Planes, Trains and Automobiles, John Candy was one of Hollywood's most beloved stars. In 1991, a year after his cameo in the monster hit Home Alone, Candy reunited with Chris Columbus and John Hughes for Only the Lonely. This time he was the lead, and although the film, which co-starred Maureen O'Hara and Ally Sheedy, was a box office dud, it showcased Candy in a new way. The laughs were still there, but Only the Lonely is also a heartbreaking drama that showcased how...

This article contains spoilers for "Deadpool & Wolverine."
Back in 2022, Chris Evans expressed enthusiasm to reprise his role as Johnny Storm from the maligned 2005 "Fantastic Four," and that it'd be an "easier sell" than returning as Captain America. Well, Evans and all the fans of that movie got their wish when a familiar face appeared in "Deadpool & Wolverine" and shouted the immortal words of the bard himself: "Flame On!"
Sadly, as cool as it is to see Johnny Storm again, he is not long for this world. Immediately, his fire powers are extinguished the moment he faces Pyro from the "X-Men" movies. Then, in one of the best and most shocking scenes in the movie, Storm gets killed in a most gory and brutal way. So shocking was this scene, where Johnny has his skin peeled off and his body explodes like a blood balloon, that even Emma Corrin...
