Universal Cable Productions is producing the series. Series co-producer Netflix will have first-run rights to the series outside of the Us.

Jeff Buhler wrote the adaptation for television and will serve as executive producer alongside Daniel Cerone, who will also serve as showrunner.

Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has another drama coming to cable television. NBC/Universal's Syfy is near a deal to pick up Martin's Nightflyers to series. THR reports that Universal Cable Productions is negotiating with Netflix for a streaming deal.

The network picked up the pilot back in June after being put in development since May. Production on the pilot is already underway but the cast has not yet been determined.

The Nightflyers series is based on Martin's 1980 novel and the 1987 film. Here is the synopsis:

Ireland’s newly opened Troy Studios has attracted its first major international project, a pilot for a new series written by the author of Game Of Thrones.

Nightflyers, based on author George Rr Martin’s novella of the same name, will shoot in the Limerick-based studios. Martin’s series of epic fantasy novels, A Song Of Ice And Fire, was later adapted into the hugely successful series, Game Of Thrones.

Independent.ie first reported the story, and a spokesperson for NBC Universal Cable Entertainment confirmed to Screen that the pilot will shoot in Troy. A decision regarding further series plans has not yet been announced.

Syfy had previously announced a pilot pick up for Nightflyers, with Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder) writing the adaptation for television.

The show is based on the novella by Martin and a 1987 film. Deadline reports that the project is potentially getting a series pick up because the studio is in the process of setting up a writers room for the show. Writer Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder) wrote the adaptation of Nightflyers.

George R.R. Martin has a pretty hot brand right now. Game of Thrones has been absolutely killing it on HBO ever since its premiere back in 2011, and while one could chalk that up to the copious amounts of sex and violence, there’s no doubt that the series has its foundation in amazing characters and storytelling. Given the success of this series, as well as Martin’s experience in television as a writer and series executive producer, it was only a matter of time before some of his other properties got the small screen treatment.

Syfy is giving itself an extreme makeover. And as part of the network’s reboot, it has ordered to series the long-awaited Superman prequel “Krypton” to series, as well as an adaptation of the quirky graphic novel “Happy!”

The network is also developing an adaptation of the George R.R. Martin novella “Nightflyers,” and, as previously announced, has partnered with Blumhouse Television to develop a new TV chapter of the feature franchise “The Purge” (which will also air on USA Network).

If you couldn’t get enough of George R.R. Martin on the big screen over the weekend with the IMAX showings of Game of Thrones, the author’s work is heading to theaters once again. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog, a few of Martin’s short stories are being turned into a movie called In the Lost Lands, and Milla Jovovich is set to star. The title comes from one of the stories, originally published in 1982, which is being intertwined with 1976’s “The Lonely Songs of Laren Dorr” and 1977’s “Bitterblooms.” Interestingly, not all of these tales seem to be of likeminded fantasy. While the first two involve familiar elements to Got fans, like sorcery and dragons, the last contains space travel. It’s not entirely clear from the initial announcement, but I’m assuming Jovovich will play a role mashed together from main characters from each of these three stories, even...
