Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Featurette & Photos Preview Dangerous Underwater Sequence
Image
With just weeks to go, the marketing campaign for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is starting to ramp up and Paramount has just shared an insane new featurette, spotlighting the film's high stakes underwater sequence that will be unlike anything you've ever seen on screen.

Teasing the sequence, star/producer Tom Cruise said, "From Legend in 1985 to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, I have been studying and filming underwater sequences for over 40 years. We have always tried to push our filmmaking to the next level… In this movie McQ and I saw an opportunity to create an underwater sequence unlike any other. We are excited to share it with you."

While the context of the scene remains mostly under wraps, it seems probable that this unprecedented moment will have something to do with the missing Sevastopol, which Ethan Hunt and his Imf team will be racing to locate...

Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning Tracking For Franchise-Best Opening; Plus Popcorn Bucket & New Photos
Image
With a few weeks to go, the first tracking data for Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is out and it seems as though his ace Imf agent Ethan Hunt is gearing up to go out with a bang.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, The Final Reckoning is currently looking at an opening in the $72 million to $88 million range, with box office pundits targeting a $80 million domestic launch over the course of the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, which would be a franchise-best, topping the $61.2 million three-day launch for Mission: Impossible - Fallout in 2018.

Meanwhile, Disney's Lilo & Stitch is expected to open around $120 million over the four-day holiday, with projections expecting something in the $110 million to $130 million range, so based on these early estimates, it seems like we're in for one of the biggest movie weekends since 2023's Barbenheimer.

If the tracking holds, and if buzz continues...

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Stars Tom Cruise & Hayley Atwell Tease Brutal -40° Shoot In Svalbard
Image
Paramount Pictures has released another amazing new behind-the-scenes featurette from Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, this time shifting the spotlight away from the stunts and onto one of the franchise's most breathtaking shooting locations: Svalbard, Norway!

If you're wondering what brings our heroes to the Arctic, well, it's probably safe to say it'll have something to do with the missing Sevastopol, which sank at the beginning of the previous film.

Dead Reckoning spoilers ahead, but, as we all know now, the completed key that Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) managed to swipe at the end of that film opens a chamber in the Sevastopol that contains the Entity's source code, allowing it to be destroyed or controlled.

The sub's location has remained a mystery until now, but, it looks like, in the two months between adventures, Hunt and company will have cracked its hidding spot in the Arctic Ocean.

Tom Cruise Hangs At 8000 Feet With 140 Mph Winds In New Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Sneak Peek
Image
Paramount Pictures has shared a jaw-dropping new look at Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, offering a quick sneak peek at Tom Cruise's most dangerous stunt yet, as he hangs off the wing of a biplane at 8,000 feet, with winds of over 140 mph blasting!

This stunt, which will undoubtedly be this final installment's signature sequence. has been in the works for several years now, with Cruise ("Ethan Hunt") and director Christopher McQuarrie having meticulously shot it over the last two years. The duo actually first teased the plane sequence at CinemaCon 2023 ahead of the launch of that summer's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning.

The previous installment received widespread critical acclaim and the follow-up is shaping up to bigger and better in every way, as Ethan Hunt and his elite team of Imf operatives race against the clock to stop The Entity once and for all.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Trailer Drops Tomorrow; Tom Cruise Jumps Into Arctic In New Teaser
Image
During last night's Final Four games on CBS, Paramount Pictures announced that the brand new theatrical trailer for Tom Cruise's highly anticipated Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - which originally debuted at CinemaCon last week - will be released online Monday!

Whether it'll drop during the National Championship Game or earlier in the day remains to be seen, but we'd wager on the latter since that's generally when the studio tends to launch new footage. We'd then expect a TV spot to debut during the game, directing fans online to check out the full-length trailer.

Plot details remain under wraps, but we learned at CinemaCon that the film will pick up two months after the events of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) still seemingly on the run and presumably on the hunt for the sunken Sevastopol.

As per Deadline's footage description, here's some...

Oscars 2025: The Good, The Bad & The Fugly
Image
Whether it was Zoe Saldaña calling out her husband’s beautiful hair during her acceptance speech or June Squibb claiming that she’s really Bill Skarsgård in drag, the 97th Oscars on Sunday were chock-full of good, bag and fugly moments.

Here are all the moments that made us go hmmm.

So Good: Oscar gave a collective hug to fire victims by opening the show with a chill-inducing ode to our beloved L.A. with iconic moments from Rocky III, La La Land, Grand Canyon, La Bamba and The Big Lebowski, followed with gorgeous performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

So bad it was good: It felt a little strange to transition out of such a sentimental opener to the image of “four-time Oscar viewer” Conan O’Brien crawling out of Demi Moore’s corpse.

Welcome to Reality Derby, our weekly deep dive into all things reality TV, hosted by Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.

Joining us this week is boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya, who was eliminated after performing as Fuzzy Peas on this week’s episode of The Masked Singer on Fox. (Our interview begins at the 0:58 mark in the video above.) De La Hoya tells us about his appearance on the singing competition, being nominated for a Grammy in 2001, and his greatest career achievement.

“I’m up against some tough characters,” De La Hoya says of Ant, Coral, and Paparazzo. “These guys can belt! These guys can sing. It was surprising actually, to me, because you think you’re doing well, you’re singing good — but I have to tell you one thing — the other characters are like true professionals. This season’s gonna be amazing.

Maná Think Their Rock Hall of Fame Nod Is ‘the Start of Something Much Bigger’

After Maná became the first Spanish-language band to earn a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last week, drummer Alex González had an iconic José Alfredo Jiménez lyric ringing in his head: “No hay que llegar primero, pero hay que saber llegar.” (“You don’t need to get there first, but you must know how you got there.”)

The classic “El Rey” line speaks to the years of sacrifice and work that Maná and many major Latin American rock bands have put in to be finally recognized...

After weeks of brutal snow, the event, put on by local Latino community organizers, featured taco tents and tables full of free coats, shoes, and blankets. Kids ran around with new toys, and families looked relieved to be outside in the sun, but there weren’t many people out and about. Usually, this annual event has people lined up around the block waiting to pick up their free goodies.

Celebrate ‘The Day the Music Died’ With New Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens Bobbleheads
Image
Sixty-six years ago today, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died when their plane crashed following a show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. It’s a seminal moment in Boomer mythology that Don McLean coined “The Day the Music Died” in his 1971 hit “American Pie,” which basically invented the entire concept of Sixties nostalgia prior to Grease, Happy Days, and American Graffiti. The tragedy was also documented in countless books and articles, including this stellar Rolling Stone piece by Jonathan Cott in 2009, and dramatized in...

The 13 Best Music Biopics to Watch After ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Let’s face it. Theatre has been the most successful place for stories about popular musicians. Alicia Keys’ “Hell’s Kitchen” is selling big on Broadway, as is “Mj.” “A Beautiful Noise,” about Neil Diamond ‘s professional and personal history, had a nice run there, and is touring the country after its run in Los Angeles. We’ve had “Tina,” “Jersey Boys,” The Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud,” Carole King’s “Beautiful” and others. A new musical is being tested now about Frank Sinatra. But the most exciting news arrives this spring, when recent Tony winner Jonathan Groff portrays Bobby Darin.

But movies about musical stars? A mixed bag. (including Kevin Spacey in a bad one about Bobby Darin) Documentaries have been the safest form to chronicle the life of famous musicians: Ones about David Crosby, Joan Baez, Springsteen, and Linda Ronstadt. And, of course, “Woodstock” and Martin Scorsese’s “Last Waltz.

Werewolves (2024)
Review: Werewolves is a fun, not so serious horror-action movie
Werewolves (2024)
Just from watching the trailer, I sat down to watch Werewolves with some low expectations. What intrigued me was the look of the werewolves. They look more practical than they do in movies these days, like they're animatronic beasts right out of an '80s movie. I like that a lot.

Werewolves is reminiscent of films like The Howling and Wolfen, with the same level of cheesiness and plot holes. It’s also fun. The lycanthropes are not as spectacular as the ones in 2010’s The Wolfman featuring Anthony Hopkins and Benecio Del Toro, or Josh Harnett’s werewolf in the Penny Dreadful TV series. These creatures were as I expected with their growling, rivers of drool, and massive teeth. We get occasional information about who they once were thanks to personal items such as dog tags and a protective vest with the words ‘wolf killer’ on it. The action...

After serving nearly a decade in Dead and Co. and sharing the stage with everyone from Eric Clapton to the Rolling Stones, B.B. King, and Jeff Beck, there are not many situations likely to overwhelm John Mayer. But when he came onstage for “Rockin’ In The Free World” at the end of a scorching Neil Young and Stephen Stills set at the Harvest Moon – A Gathering charity show in Lake Hughes, California, the longest they’d played together since Buffalo Springfield’s short-lived 2011 reunion tour, the look on Mayer’s face clearly read,...

The Greatest Showman Director Explains the Monkey in Robbie Wiliams' Biopic
Image
As music-based biopics have slowly become a well-worn genre, directors have embraced new techniques and measures to shock audiences into theaters to watch their movies. Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) is doing exactly that with his upcoming biopic, Better Man, focused on British music icon Robbie Williams. So what is Gracey doing that's so revolutionary? Will Robbie Williams be made entirely of Lego (see Piece by Piece)? Is the musical sort of a musical, but not really a musical ( la Joker: Folie deux)? Or does he stray away from the true story and tell an epic tale of drug syndicates and Madonna tributes (like Weird: The Al Yankovic Story)? Nope, he turned Robbie Williams into a monkey.

Following the release of the first trailer for Better Man, Robbie Williams and Michael Gracey sat down to discuss the bizarre creative decision. Like a hard-hitting reporter, Williams opened the featurette with the question on everyone's minds,...

Image
The 1987 biopic La Bamba about the life and career of rock and roll legend Ritchie Valens is a critically acclaimed movie that still holds up today. Now, Ritchie Valens is getting another showcase on the big screen with a La Bamba remake in the works at Sony. As per a report by Variety, Mucho Mas Media and Sony are teaming up to remake the Golden Globe-nominated film based on rock star Valens' life and career.

Luis Valdez, the writer and director of the original film, is on board as an executive producer, with Jos Rivera, who is best known for 2004's The Motorcycle Diaries, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, is attached to write the new screenplay. A ‘La Bamba’ Remake Is In The Works
Image
Remakes are a fact of life in Hollywood nowadays. If a project was popular at one time and it’s been a while since its release, why not remake it? At least that’s the logic involved. But do we really need remakes of period musical biopics? Apparently so, as people are ready to remake “La Bamba.”

According to Variety, Mucho Mas Media and Sony are developing a remake of the 1987 classic film “La Bamba.” The film tells the story of the life and career of Ritchie Valens, a hit musician from the ‘50s.

‘La Bamba’ Remake Will Retell the Story of Singer Ritchie Valens
Lou Diamond Phillips in La Bamba (1987)
The 1987 musical biopic La Bamba chronicled the life and career of Mexican-American rock pioneer Ritchie Valens. Now, according to Variety, a remake of the film is in the works.

Lou Diamond Phillips starred as Valens in the original, which was nominated for a Golden Globe and earned Los Lobos a 1987 chart-topper for their version of Valens’ 1958 single “La Bamba,” which was based on a Mexican folk song. Valens was also known for the ballad “Donna” and the rave-up “Come On, Let’s Go,” two late-Fifties radio hits.

Valens died in a plane crash on Feb.

Mario Van Peebles to Direct ‘That’ll Be the Day,’ Drama About Buddy Holly and the Birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll (Exclusive)
Image
Mario Van Peebles has been tapped to direct “That’ll Be the Day,” the story of how Buddy Holly and other musicians of the late 1950s helped give birth to rock ‘n’ roll and influence the wider societal and cultural landscape, including the civil rights movement.

Music has been central to much of Van Peebles’ work, from his 1991 gangster movie “New Jack City” to his work on “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which he co-executive produced for Hulu. Van Peebles is currently writing a musical stage tribute to his father Melvin Van Peebles, to be performed at New York City’s Lincoln Center later this year.

“America’s tumultuous cultural melting pot has produced transcendent musical talent, including Buddy Holly, who was our first bad ass rock ’n’ roll nerd,” Van Peebles said in a statement.

His 2003 docudrama “Baadasssss!” pays homage to his father’s groundbreaking film “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.” His latest film,...

Lou Diamond Phillips Wasn’t Sure He Belonged In ‘La Bamba’
Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in Deux flics à Miami (1984)
Aside from a guest appearance on Miami Vice, Lou Diamond Phillips was essentially an unknown when he was cast as Richie Valens in the biopic La Bamba. Of course, once the film was released, it became a hit, and Phillips was its breakout star. During the filming of the movie, though, things were much different. As he said during a panel at The Love of Horror, Phillips spent much of the movie wondering if he was punching up above his weight class. (Click on the media bar below to hear Lou Diamond Phillips) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Lou_Diamond_Phillips_La_Bamba_.mp3

La Bamba is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, the Criterion Collection, and most digital platforms.

La Bamba: The Underrated Film About Music Pioneer Ritchie Valens
Image
La Bamba was released during a turbulent time in California. In 1987, Reaganomics had led to a greater divide between rich and poor in Hollywood, a town that already represented both extremes. Latino communities continued to face disenfranchisement and segregation even as a new generation of Chicanos brought the beauty of Mexican culture back to the arts in California. Mexican-Americans were severely under-represented in Hollywood in the 1980s.

Enter Luis Valdez, the pioneering playwright who crossed over to film with this unbelievable cross-section of American class structure and '50s culture — using Ritchie Valens' unforgettable story as his jumping off point.

When thinking of La Bamba, step back and consider how unlikely this all is: an 18th Century folk song gets refashioned as a Rock 'N' Roll single by the 17-year-old son of migrant parents, becomes a hit, and inspires one of the great films about Chicanos in America. That is the miracle of Valens' story,...

10 Clues Pokémon's Indigo Disk Dlc Is Hinting At The Next Pokémon Game
Image
There are many hints in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Indigo Disk Dlc about the next games. Several clues point towards remakes of Gen 5's Black and White titles. Connections vary from shared locations to new characters related to Unova-based NPCs.

Even before its release, there are several clues in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Indigo Disk Dlc that hint at the next Pokémon games, which may live up to expectations and years of rumors. Pokémon generations tend to last a few years and, while Scarlet and Violet’s release kicked off Gen 9 in late 2022, there are likely more games on the way to integrate the current generation. Gen 8 was initiated by Pokémon Sword and Shield, followed up by the remake duo Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and then concluded by the experimental Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which gave the franchise a completely new style of gameplay.

Because of how generations in Pokémon work,...

12 Actors You Forgot Appeared In The Young Guns Movies
Image
The Young Guns movies featured a star-studded ensemble cast, including Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, and Lou Diamond Phillips. Notable actors such as Tom Cruise, Terry O'Quinn, Viggo Mortensen, Christian Slater, and Terence Stamp also appeared in the films. Rock music legend Jon Bon Jovi made a cameo and provided the end credits theme for Young Guns 2.

The Young Guns movies featured a wealth of acting talent, including some surprisingly familiar faces. 1988's Young Gun featured an all-star ensemble cast for its action-adventure Western. The sequel, 1990's Young Guns 2, expanded the cast even further with a packed line-up of famous actors.

Young Guns starred Emilio Estevez as William H. "Billy the Kid" Bonney in an adaptation of the infamous gunslinger's life. After their benefactor is slain, Billy and his troupe of renegades (known as the Regulators) enact a violent revenge which leads to them becoming the hunted.

Blu-ray Review: Luis Valdez’s La Bamba Joins the Criterion Collection
Esai Morales
“Don’t be such a dreamer,” says Bob (Esai Morales) to his younger brother, to which soon-to-be teen star Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips), né Richard Valenzuela, quickly retorts, “My dreams are pure rock ‘n’ roll.” It’s the kind of blunt, overearnest exchange found in countless music-based biopics, but it also exemplifies La Bamba’s penchant for the cartoonishly archetypal. Indeed, everyone surrounding Ritchie is stripped of both nuance and agency as their roles in the film rarely extend beyond fueling or antagonizing the future icon.

Ritchie’s girlfriend, Donna (Danielle von Zerneck), the namesake of one of his biggest hits, is little more than a poodle skirt and a cheery smile, while his doting mother, Connie (Rosanna DeSoto), is the quintessential ultra-supportive parent. Bob is certainly the most fully fleshed out of this trio, but even most of his personal ups and downs are presented as being directly...
