Briefly held the record for the largest production budget ($8 million) for any anime, until Akira (1988) was produced at a budget of $10 million in 1988.
In March of 1992 producers at Gainax had began planning on the sequel film Aoki uru with Hideaki Anno slated to direct. The project fell through a year later due to financial difficulties faced by the studio. However, Gainax has repeatedly attempted to restart Aoki Uru, and finally in 2013 got the sequel into production.
The first film produced by the anime studios Gainax and Bandai Visual.
The rape scene was cut by the Manga Video in order for the film to pass PG. Now Anime Limited distributed and released the film on Blu-Ray passed 15 uncut.
Bandai gave Gainax ¥800 million for the film.
