Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now, they’re working on several follow-up projects, including a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Fright Night Part 2 – and a deluxe edition 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II! Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher announced the Prom Night II project on social media, where he also revealed that Blu-ray releases of Prom Night III: The Last Kiss and Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil are in the works. Whether or not the other sequels get 4K upgrades will depend on what materials are available for them. Synapse does have the rights required to bring the original Prom Night to 4K Uhd as well, but...

After working their magic to bring Trick or Treat to 4K Ultra HD, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films have announced six upcoming titles in the works.
The releases include: Fright Night Part II, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss, Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil, 976-Evil II, and Angel of H.E.A.T.
“There are no release dates for any of these titles at this time,” Synapse writes, noting that Fright Night Part II will not be out in 2025.
“We can’t even say ‘Still in production. No release date.’ because several of them have not started production yet! Just as it was with Trick or Treat, Red Shirt Pictures will be overseeing the production of each release, while Synapse will oversee the audio/video and distribution of each title, all of which will be in production throughout 2025 and into 2026.”

The killers in the slasher sub-genre have been predominantly male, but occasionally we’re treated to the sight of a female blade-wielding maniac – and lately, it seems like we’ve been seeing more and more female slashers, which is a fun change of pace. Pearl is one example of the recent slasher resurgence on the big screen, and the title character was one killer lady! So it seemed like this would be a good time to look back at the previous female slashers and pick some favorites. Who had the best kills, the best reason behind her kills, and who was the mother of them all? Here’s our list of the top 5 best female slashers, based on preferences and impact on the genre.

In the opening credits of Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the evil child murderer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) is seen hiding out in a remote boiler room, carefully constructing his preferred mode of violence: a glove outfitted with long blades on the fingertips. Freddy uses his glove to slash through the innocent flesh of his victims, giving him an animalian, predatory nature. When he wears the glove, he is ready to kill -- and he never removes it.
Freddy's glove, charred face, striped sweater, and rumpled hobo hat became the monster's signature look, and millions of horror fans have recreated Freddy's costume every Halloween since. Naturally, one can buy replica plastic Freddy gloves at costume shops, even to this day.

School is starting to get back in session for many, hammering in one of the final nails of summer’s coffin. It’s fitting that the new school year heralds in the arrival of Fall; few things are scarier than the hells of school. Students must deal with homework, teachers, parents, social structures, and puberty. Teachers must contend with unruly students, their unrulier parents, grading, and office stresses. And high school is a hell of its own.
Luckily, horror covers the terrors of school from every perspective, young and old alike. This week’s streaming picks head back to school to exploit all the academic anxieties and fears.

It’s prom night 2008 and Donna Keppel is planning to wear a champagne-colored dress. Corseted, with pink and gold beads. Unfortunately, it might also get splattered with blood and tears, because the teacher who’s obsessed with her has broken out of the mental hospital, tracked her down to the prom venue, and is ready to make sure she’ll be his forever. Even if that means having to slaughter her friends first. That’s the story of the 2008 version of Prom Night (watch it Here) – and if you haven’t seen this one, it might be the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
The Prom Night franchise began with the release of a 1980 slasher movie which starred scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis as a young woman who has to deal with a ski mask-wearing maniac crashing her prom. People are stabbed and hacked, knocked off a cliff, decapitated, throats are slit,...

Based on H.P. Lovecraft‘s The Thing On The Doorstep, Joe Lynch’s (Wrong Turn 2, Mayhem, “Creepshow”) new movie Suitable Flesh is finally headed to Shudder next month! And it’s not the only horror highlight arriving in January.
Look for “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula” to close out its current season with the final two episodes airing on January 9 and January 16, after a brief holiday hiatus. Then there’s the anticipated splatter-comedy Destroy All Neighbors, which just debuted its gnarly practical effects-heavy trailer, set to debut on the streaming service on January 12.
AMC Original series “Preacher” arrives on Shudder on January 18. From Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the supernatural adventure series follows a preacher who enlists the help of a vampire and his ex to find God. Starring Dominic Cooper and Ruth Negga, based on the graphic novel series created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.

Practical jokes gone wrong in horror movies often involve cruel and dangerous pranks that lead to deadly consequences for the victims. Giving the villain a sympathetic backstory allows viewers to justify the gruesome revenge that follows when the main characters are targeted. These pranks are often poorly planned and lack any real humor, making them even more unsettling and disturbing.
While pranks gone wrong are a horror movie staple, the worst instances of this trope feature practical jokes that would never have been funny, even if they didn’t end in disaster. Horror movies are often filled with characters trying to get gruesome revenge on their tormentors. Giving a villain a sympathetic backstory is a surefire way to ensure viewers won’t feel too bad when the movie’s main characters start dropping like flies. An early example of this approach can be seen in 1980’s original Friday the 13th,...

Scream gets mashed up with Back to the Future in Totally Killer. The horror-science-fiction-comedy begins in the present day, 35 years after the Sweet Sixteen Killer slaughtered three teenage girls. One survivor of that attack, Pam, is now grown up with a rebellious teenage daughter of her own, Jamie. But when the masked psychopath resurfaces to target Pam and Jamie, Jamie accidentally triggers a time machine that whisks her back to 1987. Now stuck in the past, she must enroll in high school, befriend the potential victims -- including a young Mean Girls version of her mother -- uncover the identity of the Sweet Sixteen Killer, and prevent his rampage.
Totally Killer producers Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreach recently spoke to Cbr about rewinding to 1987, horror tropes, designing masks, and Gravitrons.

When it comes to horror sequels to popular slasher franchises, most rarely match the original. As Randy from Scream 2 put it, “Sequels suck”. For every Halloween II or A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, there’s a Friday the 13th Part V or Prom Night 2. However, arguably no questionable slasher sequel is as infamous as the third part in the I Know What You Did Last Summer trilogy, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. Now the 2006 direct-to-video sequel is coming to Blu-ray this Fall for the very first time.

While the 2008 Prom Night remake wasn’t well-received upon release, the slasher movie’s filming locations involve a lot of surprising horror history. The first Prom Night was a hit when it was released in 1980. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, who was then coming off the success of Halloween, the original Prom Night was a dark whodunit with a masked killer picking off a group of teens who'd covered up a death years earlier. The 2008 version dropped this mystery element in favor of a more straightforward slasher story where an obsessed teacher murdered the family of one of his students. Three years later, he escapes and attacks her prom.
While Prom Night was a box office success, the sequel Prom Night 2 hasn't happened. This isn’t surprising considering the abominable reviews that the slasher remake received. The 2008 Prom Night was written off by critics as a dull compendium of slasher movie clichés.

While Prom Night’s ending might be predictable, the slasher remake still tells viewers a lot about the state of the horror subgenre back in the mid-‘00s. 1980’s original Prom Night was released at the height of the post-Halloween slasher boom and even starred the iconic scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis. As such, it comes as no surprise that 2008’s remake Prom Night arrived amidst a spate of slasher remakes as filmmakers in the mid-‘00s scrambled to reboot, reinvent, and rewrite the many classic horror movies of the early ‘80s. Prom Night arrived after 2006’s Black Christmas and before 2008’s Sorority Row.
However, while the original Prom Night was not Jamie Lee Curtis’ best horror movie, it was still a lot better than 2008’s remake with Prom Night (2008) receiving brutal reviews upon release. The 2008 Prom Night's slasher story is disarmingly simple compared to others in the genre.

The 2008 slasher movie Prom Night is making the rounds on streaming services, prompting many to wonder if there's any Prom Night 2 news on the airwaves. While actress Brittany Snow didn't reach scream queen status until starring in Ti West's X, she's no stranger to the horror genre. Not counting the crime thriller On the Doll, Prom Night was Snow's first foray into horror, as she starred as senior high school student Donna Keppel. In the film, Donna is stalked by her former obsessive biology teacher Richard Fenton who murdered her parents three years prior.
As Donna and her friends prepare for their senior prom, Fenton makes a desperate attempt to get to her once again. While the movie received less-than-favorable reviews upon its release (via Rotten Tomatoes), that hasn't stopped audiences from scouring the net for Prom Night 2 news as many are hopeful to see Brittany Snow play Donna once again.

Sandor Stern’s ‘Pin’ is an unsung ‘80s classic that tells a traumatic tale of a broken family that turns an unhealthy coping mechanism into a totem of terror.
“Have you heard from Leon?”
“No.”
“I miss him a great deal.”
“So do I.”
Horror’s “evil doll” sub-genre has never been more popular, but it’s been a lively area of terror for many decades now. There’s an instantly identifiable selling point to one of these stories where a mundane toy suddenly becomes a terrifying artifact. One of the more obscure entries in the evil doll sub-genre is 1988’s Pin, a disturbing tale of repressed pain, codependent family dynamics, and displaced identity that bears more in common with Psycho than Child’s Play. Pin, while refusing to limit itself to just one type of horror, delivers a memorable meditation on trauma that makes an even greater impact 35 years later.

Boone, Button-Face & Barker.
After five weeks of discussing hilarious camp with Drop Dead Gorgeous, Nurse 3D, Female Trouble, Flesh for Frankenstein, and Sleepaway Camp, we went back to some more serious horror with a look at John Carpenter’s Someone’s Watching Me! last week. Now, we’re discussing the troubled production and queer allegory at the center of Clive Barker‘s Nightbreed (1990)!
In the film, Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) is haunted by terrifying nightmares of a city of monsters. He goes to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Decker (David Cronenberg), for help. But what Boone doesn’t know is that Decker is really a serial killer. Decker frames Boone to take the fall for his murders, and Boone is killed by the police. But Boone is brought back to life by the monsters of his dreams, the Nightbreed, who in turn join Boone in his quest to stop Decker from killing again.

With a raft of new streaming services coming our way this year, it’s impressive that Shudder continues to develop compelling content and a solid horror library to keep fans returning. Having already snapped up the rights to Rob Zombie’s 3 From Hell, they’ve now announced their full lineup of titles for February 2020, which includes new original series, shorts, and a lot of classic movies.
In terms of original series, Shudder have The Dead Lands on Thursdays through March 5th, with the show adapting a 2014 New Zealand film focusing on Māori mythology. The plot covers a warrior returning from the afterlife who has to contend with the spirits of the recently dead. Given Shudder’s confirmation of a second season for Creepshow, it’ll be fascinating to see what they do with this material as they increase their original series commitments.

Happy October, readers! Nearly three years after releasing the original Slumber Party Massacre as a special edition Blu-ray, Scream Factory has finally put a double feature disc of its two sequels: 1987’s Slumber Party Massacre II and 1990’s Slumber Party Massacre III. It’s something of a good news/bad news situation.
The good news is that Slumber Party Massacre II is really crazy and really fun. The bad news is that part 3 is not. Picking up the subversive campiness of where Amy Holden Jones’ original left off, Slumber Party Massacre II writer/director Deborah Brock dials up the weirdness and adds an abstract, hallucinatory bent to the first sequel. It’s bigger and stranger, more colorful and experimental; I’m reminded of the leap from Prom Night to Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, except that the original Slumber Party Massacre is a better movie than Prom Night.

Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-Thon Part VIII – Design by Haunt Love
For years now, my good friend James Harris, proprietor of Doc Terror, has urged me to make the trip to Philly for Exhumed Films’ 24 Hour Horror-Thon. It sounded like an amazing time, but Philly is such a long drive for me that it never seemed reasonably possible. My wife and I discussed a way in which we could make it a trip for all of us. So, her and my son, along with her mother, came up and went on the Hershey tour, while I got my horror-thon on. With 4 people in the car, a ton of stops are going to be made. In total, it took us probably 13 and a half hours to make it to the hotel. I had only a few hours to sleep, before I would leave the hotel, en route to the Philly International House,...

I always start with TCM because you can tell they take such care in developing their lineup. Be sure to check out their Thursday nights. This is truly a unique year for that station.
A quick note: We are not going to be able to get it all. So many different markets and channels and providers… it’s...

The 80s were full of many things, leg warmers, giant hair, neon colors paired with some of the most unique music any decade had ever seen. What this decade also brought us was countless films that share the term “classic” with things from the infamous Brat Pack to Stephen Spielberg – the films that came out of this decade were unquestionably unique and littered with style. Of course not every film that came out in the decade is considered a classic, that would just be silly, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another decade that features as many childhood favorites and cult classics as this one. It also brought us the mighty VHS boom and made our beloved horror genre thrive throughout.
This list was painstakingly compiled to represent the essential horror films from the 80s that aren’t necessarily the best; but that represent the decade best as a whole.

As with all of our new designs, they will are printed once and when they sell out, they go into our graveyard where they will remain until voted back by You. So if you dig any of these, pick’em up while they still have that fresh cotton smell!”
Terrorvision: “Adjust your satellite, ’cause we’re pumping out another mind-melting transmission!

Syfy just recently wrapped production on an original movie called Haunted High. News that they’ve ordered up an original docu-series called “School Spirits” about haunted schools makes me wonder if they haven’t turned into the proverbial dog chasing its tail.
You may know super producer Mark Burnett as the man behind “Survivor” and “The Apprentice”. Now, teaming with “Celebrity Ghost Stories” creator Seth Jarrett, Burnett can add “School Spirits”, a new Syfy reality series that goes to schools around the country chronicling the tales of ghosts said to haunt the hallowed halls of academia, to his resume.
Syfy has given the go-ahead for six episodes of “School Spirits”. In each episode, school ghost stories will be told via reenactments and first-person narratives through the testimonials of students, teachers, parents, and staff who claim to have experienced paranormal activity.
Syfy programming exec Mark Stern tells Variety, “School hauntings are...

All About Evil Favorite horror comedy? This era of horror films peaked in the 80's when the teen comedy was at its peak also. It seemed like just about every horror film that came out between 1986 - 1988 was a horror comedy. Some films that come to mind instantly from this sub-genre is Evil Dead 2, The Return of the Living Dead, April Fool's Day, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3-5 and Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, etc. Yet when horror dried up in the late 80's, so did the merger of horrror and comedy. Sure, we had horror films that had some humor in them, but it was never as equally balanced as it was in the 80's. So my pick is a welcomed return to this era of horror films. So without further hesitation, I give you........

1980’s Prom Night was among the first slasher films to come bursting forth from the post-Halloween floodgates and, while it doesn’t seem like you can find a positive review of it anymore, it was a big success then and remains one of the most enjoyable entries in the slasher subgenre.
When producer Peter R. Simpson finally decided to create a follow-up, however, A Nightmare on Elm Street and its first sequel had done far better box office business than their straight-up slasher peers. It’s no surprise, then, that the filmmakers took note of Freddy Krueger’s increasing popularity and decided to take things in a similar, supernatural direction. What we have here is an attempt to create the next popular nightmare man (or woman). Hence, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II.
Shifting gears with a sequel seems like an incredibly strange practice. On one hand it seems like...

Slumber party make out session in Jennifer’s Body; Vicki makes out with her dad in Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II; Yutte Stensgaard goes a little cross-eyed because of the bizarro music from ‘Traci’ in Lust for a Vampire; The Hunger–more famous for its sexy time scene with Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon but I had to show David Bowie some love + killer ankhs; Candyman gives Virginia Madsen a permanent trout pout; Freddy hearts Nancy 4 eva.
