Yo ho, a criminal's life for me. Maybe doing something illegal might actually be better than working a "real" job? There's clever commentary worked into this new film about the inherent problems with capitalism and corporate culture, ultimately hinting that the quickest and easiest way to earn money might actually be the best way. Which is why so many people choose this path instead of a formal career. Emily the Criminal is a slick, engaging credit card scam heist thriller starring Aubrey Plaza - who also produced the film. This is one of the final premieres at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and it's a late fest highlight, one of my faves. It remains hyper focused and never wanders, with a 96 minute runtime that is just right for this story. A few critics have compared it to Uncut Gems, but I'd say it's much more similar to the black jack scam...

This Outlander fun fact will have you saying "Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ!" For a chat with Square Mile, Outlander star Sam Heughan was interviewed by his close friend Tom Ellis. However, during the Q&a, Ellis, who is best known for playing the titular role in Lucifer, revealed that he was almost Heughan's co-star. "I'm going to let you into a little secret," he said. "I auditioned for Outlander, not for Jamie Fraser but for Tobias Menzies' part, 'Black Jack' Randall." That means if Ellis landed the part, he would've been Heughan's character's biggest on-screen rival. For those who need a refresher, Black Jack is the descendant of...

Based on a ’70s manga by Japanese master Osamu Tezuka, a bored writer’s affair with his beguiling young muse gets the live-action treatment in “Tezuka’s Barbara.” Primarily concerned with the story’s excursions into erotic surrealism and the occult while playing down its social and political themes, this handsomely packaged item isn’t deep or meaningful but does present a visually arresting account of middle-aged male ennui colliding with uninhibited and irresistible female energy. Sure to be welcomed by Tezuka’s large fan base in Japan, “Barbara” has enjoyed a lengthy festival run since bowing in competition at the Tokyo Film Festival.
One of several adults-only tales by the legendary creator of children’s classics “Astro Boy” and “Kimba the White Lion,” “Barbara” first appeared in Big Comic magazine in 1973 and was long considered unfilmable. It has finally been adapted by Tezuka’s eldest son, Macoto Tezka, a highly...

In 1973, Osamu Dezaki took the zero-to-hero sports shojo written by Sumika Yamamoto about high school freshman Hiromi and made a 25-episode TV animation series. Six years later, the successful Nippon Television show was put on the big screen by the same director. Being one of the best-selling shojo manga of all time, the tennis drama is a groundbreaking story that puts a strong female character in the lead and can be seen, together with “Attack No.1” (1969), as a precursor of future anime.
“Aim for the Ace!” will screen at Japan Society
“Aim for the Ace!” tells the story of Hiromi Oka, a high school student, who joins the tennis club because of her admiration for senior student Ryuzaki. Ryuzaki, spoken by famous voice actress Masako Ikeda (“Galaxy Express 999” ), is the best player in the team and in the course of the film Oka gets the chance to play double with her.

Sir Ben Kingsley has never been shy about hamming it up in low-rent garbage (check out 2015’s “Self / Less” to watch him dye his skin orange and play a bald-headed version of Trump), but his latest performance takes things to another level entirely. The kind of low-rent action movie that only exists because everybody involved knew that nobody in the Western world would ever see it, Eran Creevy’s “Collide” stars Nicholas Hoult as a reformed car thief and Felicity Jones as the dying girlfriend whose kidney failure inspires him to do one last job.

We've got another action-packed trailer for Jason Statham's upcoming Las Vegas gambling thriller Wild Card. I'm a big fan of the films that Statham makes. Basically, every movie he stars in manages to entertain me. This latest film of his is a remake of a 1987 movie called Heat, which starred Burt Reynolds. I vaguely remember watching that movie, but this one looks like a lot of fun. It was directed by Simon West (The Mechanic and The Expendables 2), and here's the synopsis:

"One way or another, this is my last night in Vegas." After an international trailer gave us our first look at Simon West's latest action thriller Wild Card starring his Expendables 2 star Jason Statham, the first domestic trailer has arrived, and there's a lot going on. Statham is lethal professionally, and after helping a friend who is beat (and seemingly raped) by a thug, he helps her get revenge. But the thug's father (Milo Ventimiglia) decides he wants to retaliate. Meanwhile, Statham keeps playing blackjack to get out of some bad luck, but he keeps finding it in other ways elsewhere. It's pretty standard Statham fare. Watch below! "I'm not violent, I'm just good at it." Formerly known as Heat, the latest film from The Mechanic and Expendables 2 director Simon West is now going by the title Wild Card. The film is actually a remake of the 1987 film starring Burt Reynolds, and this time it's Jason Statham in the lead role as Nick Wild (yes, the title is a stupid pun). This time, Statham is an ex-marine and a gambling addict, and of course he just wants to be left alone to start a new life in Las Vegas. But as is the case with all these movies, trouble finds him. Be prepared to laugh at how bad this looks in this French trailer, with some terrible dialogue. Watch! Here's the French trailer for Simon West's Wild Card (via The Film Stage): Here's the poster for the film's release in the United Kingdom and a first...

Jason Statham is back and getting violent with a bunch of Las Vegas thugs in his latest action thriller Wild Card, which is called Joker in the the UK. The movie is a remake of the 1987 film Heat with Burt Reynolds, and it was supposed to be directed by Brian De Palma before The Mechanic and The Expendables 2 director Simon West took it over.
It looks like an awesome action flick, and I imagine Statham fans won't be disappointed in what they see in this trailer. He just goes on a Vegas rampage kicking all kinds of ass! Here's the synopsis:
Nick Wild, an ex-marine and gambling addict, goes into the protection business but plans to leave Las Vegas for a better life. When his last girlfriend, Holly, is found beaten and left for dead, he agrees to help revenge her. He will soon discover that the guilty man is Danny DeMarco,...

When it comes to a film starring Jason Statham, you almost always know what you’re getting into before the opening credits even begin rolling. The British actor is about as bankable as they come, and following a string of balls-to-the-wall performances in The Expendables, Crank and The Transporter, Statham — or “The Stath,” if you prefer — has grown into a bona fide action star, and his latest role is no different.
Starring as an ex-marine with a crippling gambling addiction, Statham is set to topline Simon West’s Wild Card, a revenge tale situated within Sin City itself. In essence, the film is a remake William Goldman’s novel Heat — no, not that Heat — which originally arrived back in 1986, but thanks to a number of production issues that included director changeovers, the thriller was never given a chance in the limelight.
And so, with West and Statham both on board...

Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Yeoh will join Jason Statham in Mechanic: Resurrection...
The mighty Jason Statham has only had two films released in cinemas this year, marking a surprisingly lean year for the man. However, worry not: in 2015, we'll be seeing The Statham in Fast & Furious 7, Wild Card (previously known as Heat - it's a remake of the Burt Reynolds movie of the same name) and the big summer comedy Spy (directed by Bridesmaids helmer Paul Feig).
And he's already hard at work on his first release in 2016.
The sequel to The Mechanic began filming last week, and The Statham will be reprising the role of Arthur Bishop in the movie. The film's now going by the title of Mechanic: Resurrection, and Dennis Gansel (who made We Are The Night) has taken over from Simon West in the director's chair.

Jason Statham and producer Steve Chasman have acquired the film rights to J.J. Connolly's novel "Viva La Madness".
'Viva' is Connolly's sequel to "Layer Cake," the book he wrote which became the 2004 Matthew Vaughn film which starred Daniel Craig as the nameless protagonist. Connolly is adapting the novel into a script with Statham to play the same character Craig did in 'Layer' .
Surviving his gunshot wound, the man is now looking to retire to a beach. Instead he becomes involved with trans-Atlantic drug deals, money laundering, high-tech electronic fraud, London lowlifes and Venezuelan drug cartels.
Statham and Chasman will produce for their Sj Pictures banner, the company's second film following the upcoming adaptation of William Goldman's "Heat".

For the second coming of Jason Reitman’s (Labor Day) now infamous Live Read program to the Toronto International Film Festival, the young auteur has yet again assembled an all-star cast to tackle one of his (and everyone else’s) all-time favorite films. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights premiered at Tiff in the now defunct Uptown Theatre in 1997, the ensuing commotion causing an unpredicted street shutdown.
Reitman himself – his father in supportive attendance – excitedly introduced the event, declaring these reads even more fun than making actual films and announcing he and the cast would be working from a version of the original shooting script that would include select deleted scenes and alternate lines. Then our actors were introduced.
Dane Cook appeared to be at least the second-biggest fan on stage, enthusiastically delivering a spot-on Luis Guzman impression as Maurice Rodriguez, ideally timing Reed Rothchild’s lines – a scant helping...

Although it's always a pleasure to talk to a filmmaker about their work, it's not often you get half-an-hour or so to really go into a more detailed conversation about their career to date. It was a real treat, then, to be able to talk to director Simon West about such a huge range of topics, from working with Nicolas Cage and Jason Statham to his transition from working in commercials to making the 90s summer blockbuster Con Air for producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Throughout, West was generous, funny and full of great stories, and he didn't even mind when we brought up the subject of his music video for Rick Astley's Never Gonna Give You Up - an 80s chart...

Simon West's Heat remake is up one more familiar face. Joining Jason Statham in the film is Milo Ventimiglia, who may be best known for playing the starring role of Peter Petrelli in NBC's Heroes, or on the feature side, as the title character's son in Rocky Balboa. Heat will have Jason Statham filling the shoes (but probably not the mustache) of Burt Reynolds, who starred in the original 1986 film based on William Goldman's novel about a bodyguard working in Las Vegas. In addition to penning the novel, Goldman wrote the screenplay for the original film, and he also wrote the adapted screenplay for the one West is directing. The Wrap says Ventimiglia has been cast to play Danny, "the son of a prominent businessman with ties to a mobster and casino owner named Baby."
