Christian Petzold’s ‘Miroirs No. 3’ Is Like a Gothic Fairytale Set in the American Midwest
Image
Christian Petzold’s “Miroirs No. 3,” which has its world premiere on Saturday in Directors’ Fortnight, is set in present-day Germany but it evokes a gothic fairytale, albeit set in a landscape reminiscent of the American Mid-West.

At the start of the film, Laura, played by Paula Beer, is experiencing an undefined mental crisis but reluctantly agrees to go on a car journey with her boyfriend. After a mysterious accident, in which the boyfriend is killed, Laura is taken under the wing of a kind woman, Betty, played by Barbara Auer, who lives near the crash site.

The film unfolds like a fairytale, similar to the stories of Brothers Grimm, Petzold tells Variety. Betty is portrayed as a witch-like character, like the old woman in “Hansel and Gretel.” She lives on her own on the edge of town, where she gathers medicinal plants from the garden, and is viewed with suspicion by the villagers.

‘Hansel & Gretel’ – The Korean Adaptation of the Classic Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale
Image
Hansel and Gretel, the two German kids who nearly became somebody’s meal, need little introduction. The characters in this Brothers Grimm classic have been used as a lesson about stranger danger and resilience for years. And while Hansel and Gretel’s ordeal has been put on screen multiple times — both faithfully and loosely — Yim Pil-sung’s 2007 movie is one of the more distinct adaptations. This Korean reimagining retains the essence of the influential fairy tale while also adding its own unique twists.

Hansel and Gretel was one of several movies from the golden age of South Korean Horror — often referred to as “K-Horror” in the West — to be based on fairy or folk tales. While Arang and A Tale of Two Sisters dug into local Korean lore, other movies drew from European narrations. However, much like Cinderella and The Red Shoes, Hansel and Gretel’s interpretation of its basis is rather liberal.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre's Script Started As A Classic Fairytale
Image
Traditional fairy tales almost always have important lessons to teach. Goldilocks educates us on why you probably shouldn't just wander into a stranger's house one day and make yourself at home. Red Riding Hood alerts us to the perils of talking to suspicious strangers, even if they are wearing your grandmother's clothes. And Hansel and Gretel expand upon the "strangers are bad" lesson by teaching us that just because a house is made of candy, that doesn't mean you should necessarily start gorging on it.

Because all of these fairytales have a creepy bend to them, many, if not all, have been turned into horror films over the years. Sometimes the movies are obvious retellings of classic tales like 2020's "Gretel & Hansel" or 2011's "Red Riding Hood." Other times though, the fairytale source material is a bit harder to put your finger on.

Tobe Hooper's remarkable 1974 horror classic "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,...

‘The Blazing World’ Review: Visually Dazzling Debut Lacks Emotion but Holds Promise
Image
Tucked inside its dazzling, old-fashioned opening credits, Carlson Young’s confounding “The Blazing World” offers an early glimpse of what’s to come. The film’s writing credits (Young and Pierce Brown) include the notation that the film was “inspired by Margaret Cavendish and other dreams.” Cavendish was a 17th-century English aristocrat, and a trailblazer: She was a scientist, a prolific playwright, and the author of the utopian sci-fi forerunner “The Blazing World.” Young seems to work from more than Cavendish’s singular work, also leaning into her own “dreams” and a hearty dose of surreal cinematic predecessors.

A talented young actress best known for her work on “Scream: The Series,” Young first approached the material in her 2018 short of the same name. She also has a knack for casting, with co-stars who include Dermot Mulroney, Vinessa Shaw, singer Soko, and Udo Kier (being extremely Udo Kier).

Young has vision,...

The CW Acquires Rights to ‘Swamp Thing,’ ‘Tell Me a Story’
Image
With many broadcast shows in disarray as a result of the coronavirus production shutdown, a trend is emerging of networks turning to streamers and international waters for content to fill their schedule.

Only hours after Fox announced it will air season 1 of the Spectrum series “L.A.’s Finest” this fall, the CW has gone three better by acquiring the broadcast rights to four different series, among them “Swamp Thing” from DC Universe and “Tell Me a Story” from CBS All Access.

In additional news, the Kevin Williamson-created anthology thriller has been canceled by All Access, Variety has confirmed, meaning that the show will end at two seasons, both of which will be heading to CW for a second-window run and will remain available to stream on All Access.

The other two shows that CW has picked up are “Coroner” (two seasons) and “Dead Pixels” (one season), which hail from Canada and the U.

‘Tell Me A Story’: No Season 3 On CBS All Access, First Two Seasons Acquired By the CW
Image
Kevin Williamson’s horror anthology series Tell Me a Story will not return to CBS All Access for a third installment. The two existing seasons of the show, from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment, have been acquired by the CW. This will mark the TV network debut of Tell Me a Story. ‘Gretel & Hansel’ Trailer: The Fairy Tale Gets A “Grim” Retelling In Upcoming Horror Film
The tale of “Hansel and Gretel” is one that isn’t exactly new to Hollywood. From its more classical and traditional adaptations of the original Brothers Grimm story like the 2002 film of the same name to the more unique retellings like 2013’s “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, their story has seen many shapes and forms.

Trailer for Upcoming Korean Film “Unalterable” by Song Chang-yong
The gangster noir genre has give Korean cinema many great films. Hoping to join the ranks of such classics as “A Bittersweet Life“, “New World” and “A Dirty Carnival“, among others, is director Song Chang-yong’s latest film “Unalterable”.

Synopsis

Kwon Sang-gon is a gangster who wants to have a cool life. He becomes a gang boss and expects to reap the rewards of the top position. Kwon Sang-Gon soon realizes his life is a living hell, filled with conspiracies and betrayals.

While the director, who has so far made three film that’ve sunk into oblivion without making a dent, and the star-cast, led by Chun Jung-myung (“Hansel and Gretel“) and other actors that have very few films to their name, don’t necessarily build confidence on the film’s quality, the trailer does boast of a stylish looking noir gangster film which should be on the radar of genre fans.

Carrie-Anne Moss at an event for Fireflies in the Garden (2008)
Carrie-Anne Moss will star on season 2 of CBS All Access’s “Tell Me a Story,” a spokeswoman for the streaming service confirmed for TheWrap.

Additionally, Danielle Campbell will join Paul Wesley as the Season 1 stars currently set for a return to the anthology fairytale series. You know, the kind of fairytale that has lots of sex and murder. In other words, do not watch this series with your kids.

But once you put them to bed, you’ll see that Odette Annable and Natalie Alyn Lind are also part of the show’s second season cast. That news, like the Wesley news, was previously announced.

Paul Wesley to Lead Tell Me A Story Season 2 on CBS All Access
This is terrific news!

Paul Wesley did some of his best work on Tell Me A Story Season 1 as one of the "three pigs" in an allegory of Three Little Pigs that intertwined with Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel.

Wesley's Eddie Longo was a low-level thief who got messed up in a bad situation that left him vulnerable and in way over his head. As you can read in my reviews of the season, his performance was riveting.

Created by Kevin Williamson, Tell Me A Story takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller.

Exploring a whole new set of fairy tales and characters each season, season two of the series will feature the tales of three legendary princesses – Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella – like you’ve never seen them before.

Film Review: Scarlet Innocence (2014) by Yim Pil-sung
Back in 2007, after debuting with the star-studded dud “Antarctic Journal”, director Yim Pil-sung adapted the popular Brothers Grimm story “Hansel and Gretel” into an excellent atmospheric and moody horror film by the same name. The film is still considered among the finest that Korean horror cinema has to offer and things were looking rosy for the sophomore director. It wasn’t, however, until 7 years later, that he would get to direct another feature length film. The film had quite a buzz around it, not least because of the director but also for featuring the pairing of superstar Jung Woo-sung with up-and-coming actress Esom in her first leading role, a role that got her nominated for five different Best New Actress Awards, winning one.

Russian Doll: Natasha Lyonne's Most Underappreciated Roles
Rosie Fletcher Louisa Mellor Apr 4, 2019

Natasha Lyonne is incredible in Netflix Russian Doll, but she's been doing sterling work for years.

Russian Doll is brilliant. But you probably know that by now. Natasha Lyonne absolutely shines as Nadia, the hard-living, guilt-stricken star of Netflix's newest must-binge existential comedy drama.

We'll say no more to avoid spoilers, though there's a slight spoiler in the final paragraph of this article (and here's our spoiler-free review) but if you've seen it, here's what we think the ending is all about, and here's what we'd expect from a second season.

However, Leonne has shone in a whole range of TV and film roles, and often these are indie projects that might have passed you by. So if, like us, you adored Russian Doll, miss it and wish you hadn't watched all of it in one go so there'd still be some left to watch,...

Hansel and Gretel Horror Movie Begins Shooting with It Star Sophia Lillis
Sophia Lillis
Ever since the fall of last year, rising actress Sophia Lillis has become a bonafide Hollywood star. She famously portrayed the role of Losers' Club member Beverly Marsh in Andy Muschietti's horror film It, which is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name. The movie quickly became one of the most profitable and popular horror movies of all time, obliterating box office records upon its premiere. Seeing money in the film's stars, producers are now casting them in prominent roles elsewhere. This has led to Lillis' casting in an upcoming horror movie retelling of the classic Hansel and Gretel fairy tale.

From Orion Pictures, Gretel and Hansel, which gets a title twist, has already begun shooting with Lillis in Dublin. She will be playing the titular role of Gretel, co-starring with Sammy Leakey as Hansel. The Blackcoat's Daughter director Osgood Perkins will be helming the film,...

Tell Me a Story Season 1 Episode 2 Review: Loss
As the title suggests, "Loss" is heartbreaking.

The other thing Tell Me a Story Season 1 Episode 2 suggests is that three fairy tales might be too many for one series to focus on in a single season.

The Three Little Pigs story is moving along very well, moving performances by leads James Wolk and Paul Wesley. By comparison, Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel are getting left behind.

Not only does the story of Three Little Pigs aka Jordan's suffering at the hands of armed robbers who killed his wife, Beth, in a heist gone wrong blossom the longer it stays in your mind after watching, but even CBS recognizes its value by proving episodic photos aplenty to memorialize the scenes, as well.

In contrast, there is very little noteworthy to carry through when it comes to a wayward teen trapping her teacher or a troubled young adult dragging...

Little Red Riding Hood (2016)
‘Tell Me a Story’ Review: Kevin Williamson Weaves Triggering, Ugly Reimagined Fairy Tales For the Trump Era
Little Red Riding Hood (2016)
With opening credits that show Little Red Riding Hood being raped by the Big Bad Wolf, “Tell Me a Story” is about as fun and understated as you might expect. The new CBS All Access series from Kevin Williamson, master of dark and icky shows like “Stalker” and “The Following,” attempts to twist classic fairy tales into his dark and icky mindset (never mind that these stories are already pretty grim). When viewed through their fairy-tale origins, the tales are laughably contrived. As standalone stories, they’re as ugly as they are trite.

Season 1 focuses on “The Three Little Pigs,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” Sam (Dorian Missick), Eddie (Paul Wesley), and Mitch (Michael Raymond-James) stand in as the not-so-little pigs, forming a hapless gang of jewelry store robbers whose story bookends the premiere. Presumably, Eddie is going through with the heist to fix his leaky roof...

Tell Me a Story Season 1 Episode 1 Review: Hope

While I'd argue that these days art takes its cues not from art but from society's vocal minority that exists on social media, cues have been culled from social media, dinner discussions, CNN, local news markets and more on Tell Me a Story Season 1 Episode 1.

This is an episode of television that when (if) watched ten or 20 years from now will be very dated.

Hand to heart, I hope more than anything that's the case even if we're plowing into stories loosely based on classic fairy tales.

What I didn't share in the preview review for Tell Me a Story were the details of the retelling of Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel. The longer they sit with you, the more haunting they become in hindsight.

For a premiere titled "Hope," there isn't...

Dorian Missick, Paul Wesley, and Michael Raymond-James in Tell Me a Story (2018)
TV Review: ‘Tell Me a Story’ on CBS All Access
Dorian Missick, Paul Wesley, and Michael Raymond-James in Tell Me a Story (2018)
In theory and logline, “Tell Me a Story” is about the intertwining lives of New Yorkers that resemble some of the most famous fairy tales of yore. The new girl in town is an unwitting Red Riding Hood with a wolf tattooed on her thigh, surrounded by predatory men. A brother and sister, long estranged from and somehow still dependent upon each other, find themselves running from forces bigger than them in a twist on Hansel and Gretel. Three men in pig masks attempt a robbery that goes horribly wrong, ending in accidental death and a vengeful man hunting them, threatening to huff and puff and blow their lives to the ground. As per the series’ marketing and self-consciously “edgy” tone, “Tell Me a Story” wants to make sure you know that you’ve never seen these fairy tales play out like this before. And yes: all their lives have...

Kevin Williamson
Kevin Williamson Talks ‘World of Unrest’ as Inspiration for ‘Tell Me a Story’
Kevin Williamson
Kevin Williamson’s latest drama, “Tell Me a Story,” blends versions of three classic fairy tales — “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “The Three Little Pigs” — but he didn’t just want to rely on versions of stories already known. Instead, he set out to “write something that was relevant today” for his CBS All Access series and create characters that lived and breathed in the modern world.

The real world became inspiration for “Tell Me a Story” on a number of levels. Within the first few minutes of the premiere episode he incorporates news footage of a Sarah Huckabee Sanders press conference along with commentary about “another shooting” from one of the characters.

“We live in such a world of unrest, such a divided time, such an angry time,” Williamson says. “We’re stuck in this moment in time where we’re just waiting for things to...

Paul Wesley
Paul Wesley's Half Naked in a Mature Version of Three Little Pigs for Tell Me a Story
Paul Wesley
Paul Wesley's new gig in Tell Me a Story is proving one thing: He's Stefan Salvatore no more. The Vampire Diaries star is part of the ensemble cast of CBS All Access' spooky new series from Scream's Kevin Williamson. In the series, Williamson takes some of the world's most beloved fairy tales and flips them on their heads, reimagining them as twisted thrillers set in New York City. So, yeah, this also isn't Once Upon a Time either. The first season of the streaming series takes on Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and Three Little Pigs. Wesley is part of the Three Little Pigs story and E! News has an exclusive sneak peek. In the video above, Wesley is in his underwear (!), in his...

Tell Me a Story Review: Standout Performances Strengthen New CBS All Access Drama
Kevin Williamson is no stranger to psychological thrillers and fairytales. After all, he created both Scream and Dawson's Creek and with Julie Plec created our favorite combination of the two, The Vampire Diaries.

Translating a TV series that has seen success on Latin television in Spain and Mexico infused with a beautiful and talented cast should be a winning combination for the prolific producer.

After watching two episodes of the upcoming CBS All Access drama Tell Me a Story starring Paul Wesley, Kim Cattrall, Danielle Campbell, Billy Magnussen, James Wolk, Dania Ramirez, Sam Jaeger, Davi Santos, Zabryna Guevara, and Dorian Missick, we think it's worthy of investing some of your time.

As already surmised from the promotional material and trailers, Tell Me a Story takes place in modern-day New York City, and during its first season will attempt to weave together the stories of The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood,...

New Trailer For The Dark and Twisted Fairytale Series Tell Me A Story
CBS All Access has released a new trailer for the upcoming series Tell Me A Story, which takes "the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller."

The show comes from the writer of the Scream franchise, Kevin Williamson, and this looks like it’ll be an interesting series to watch. Here’s the synopsis:

Set in modern-day New York City, the first season of this serialized drama interweaves "The Three Little Pigs," "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Hansel and Gretel" into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder.

I hope that it turns out good! This trailer is a lot better than the one that was previously released. I’ll give it a chance because it looks like it could be a crazy show. If it turns out to be good, I’ll obviously keep watching!

Trailer for Upcoming Korean Film “The Negotiation” by Lee Jong-suk
South Korea hasn’t really done an exciting hostage negotiation film so far. Here to change that is hit-making production house Jk Films, whose latest film “The Negotiation” pits popular actors Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin against each other in a game of cat-and-mouse.

Synopsis

Not much is known about the plot at the moment, except that it is a criminal thriller movie about a kidnapper and a negotiator whose superior has been kidnapped.

Hyun Bin, who was last seen in the conman drama “The Swindlers“, stars in his first negative role as the kidnapper while Son Ye-jin, who last appeared in the romantic melodrama “Be With You“, plays the lead negotiator trying to secure the release of the hostages from the kidnapper’s clutches. Directed by Lee Jong-suk, who has previously worked as an assistant director on Jk Films’s hugely popular “Ode to My Father“, “The Negotiation” also...

Trailer For The Tell Me A Story Series Gives a Modern Dark Twist on Classic Fairy Tales
The writer of the Scream franchise, Kevin Williamson, brings his signature storytelling style to a new series for CBS All Access called Tell Me a Story. The series is said to take "the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller." Of course, they have to sexy it up a bit as well.

We've got the first trailer for the series that teases a very different take on Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and Hansel and Gretel. The serialized drama is set in New York City and it interweaves these three fairy tales into "an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder."

They're really trying hard to make this series something people will want to watch, but I'm not really sold on it. I'll give it a chance, but only time will tell if it...

‘Tell Me a Story': Classic Fairy Tales Get Spooky in First Trailer for CBS All Access Series (Video)
CBS debuted the first trailer for the upcoming All Access series “Tell Me a Story” on Sunday, giving a first glimpse into the show’s modern-day update of classic fairy tales.

The series, which comes from “Scream” writer Kevin Williamson, takes the world’s most beloved stories and reimagines each as a cryptic and twisted psychological thriller set in modern-day New York City.

The trailer reveals that the series will be a much darker take on the fairy tales than “Once Upon a Time” and more grounded than NBC’s “Grimm,” instead re-interpreting the stories as real-life adventures.
