A real heart-thumper, even 13 years after its release!
I saw this when it first came out, and again on video-- same effect. This one keeps you on the edge of your seat! Even though it was released in 1987 it's still an excellent thriller for thriller-fans.

'Distortions' is kind of a murder mystery. When Amy learns that her husband died in an explosion when his car when off a cliff, she suddenly finds herself being watched by a strange man (who makes no effort to hide himself). Worried about her niece, Aunt Margot suggests that Amy come live with her for awhile. But the strange man doesn't leave her alone. Problem is that Amy can't seem to convince her Aunt that the man exists since, whenever she tries to show her the man wandering in the house, he always conveniently disappears.
For me, this was a half good, half bad movie. The meat of the movie is the seven or eight times when Amy thinks she sees that strange man lurking in the shadows and every time, can't manage to catch him in time. And it goes on and on like this, but she fails to make much of an impression on too many people. However, it was worth watching all the way through to see the quadruple whammy twist at the end which. In part, because of so many excuses to resolve all of the characters' conflicts rather quickly (and sometimes, slyly), some of it turned out to be quite funny (while the rest of it made good sense). But, if you pay enough attention, you could probably figure it all out on your own before you get to that point.
Piper Laurie gives a great performance as the incredibly creepy Aunt Margot, a woman with a deep, dark secret, one that is bad news for Amy (Olivia Hussey). Fans of cheap mysteries, especially the old b-movies they used to run on late night cable should enjoy this little thriller. All-in-all, had it not been for the run around routine for most of the movie, I would've given it a better recommendation.
