Image Source: Amazon The 80s. A time of big hair, bigger dreams and a cinematic landscape of teen adventures we’ll never forget. Among those classics, a shining star: 1987’s Adventures in Babysitting. It wasn’t just a movie, it was a rite of passage, a wild ride through a city that felt both dangerous and exhilarating. Remember the thrill? A night of babysitting, a desperate plea for help and suddenly Elisabeth Shue’s character Chris Parker is navigating the urban jungle with three kids in tow. It was the perfect blend of comedy, suspense and that unmistakable 80s energy. The movie’s magic wasn’t just in the story, but in the cast. Elisabeth Shue fresh from The Karate Kid anchored the film with a mix of vulnerability and strength. Keith Coogan, Anthony Rapp and Maia Brewton brought youthful authenticity to the roles. And check out the supporting cast!

Disney Channel has launched the careers of several young actors who are still working in the industry today. Disney stars like Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and the Jonas Brothers began their careers in popular Disney Channel shows like Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, or the iconic film Camp Rock, before becoming international superstars. Yet sometimes, child stars have a hard time growing up in the entertainment industry or maintaining the same level of success in their different projects throughout time.
Disney Channel has many original movies and TV shows that have won over audiences worldwide and taken its stars to new levels of popularity. With the success of Disney Channel projects, the stars in these shows and movies gained popularity and big fandoms as well. Rumor has it that Steven Spielberg initially came up with the story for The Goonies when he was beginning to direct 1985’s The Color Purple. The question that started this rather surprising thought process was, ironically, a simple one: What kind of wild adventures do kids get into on rainy days? Well, according to him, venturing underground in search of One Eyed Willy’s treasure, carefully treading through many different traps set by the legendary pirate and also avoiding a very intimidating crime family (who are shaped like a bunch of oversized brutes).
Combining Spielberg’s love for filmmaking with the natural camaraderie between the then-child actors, this adventure movie became a quick success, surpassing its budget enormously and being praised by audiences and critics alike (Variety calling it a dangerous...

"Kindergarten Cop" is the quintessential 90s movie. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, the defining action star of the era, in a role few thought he could pull off, and it's directed by one of the most prolific filmmakers of the decade. The film also features a cast of young actors just before they went on to achieve major success. Now, we're looking back at the talent involved in "Ghostbusters" director Ivan Reitman's popular 1990 comedy to find out what they're up to these days, mainly because we love reminding ourselves just how old we are.
For those unaware, "Kindergarten Cop" follows Detective John Kimble (Arnold) as he goes undercover as a kindergarten teacher to bust a dangerous criminal. Like "Twins," Reitman's previous collaboration with Arnold, "Kindergarten Cop" blends comedy with drama, plus a hefty dose of surprisingly violent action, resulting in the perfect movie to show kids of all ages in...

If Disney+’s new drama Star Wars: Skeleton Crew had debuted when I was eight or nine, it would have abruptly shoved Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard aside to become Young Daniel’s favorite TV show.
While the original Star Wars saga, a three-and-only-three-movie series I was hardly alone in being obsessed with, was designed to be welcoming to kids, it was simultaneously a world that was generally without children. Instead, we focused on alien creatures or robots who either resembled or acted like children — as well as Luke Skywalker, whose arc took him from callow youth to mature Jedi.
At the same time, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment at the forefront, we were treated to a string of junior quest narratives of varying qualities — movies that captured one of the last cultural moments in which kids were allowed to wander off in the morning, carry out...

There are plenty of classic Christmas movies out there. The likes of "It's a Wonderful Life" and "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" have been staples of the holiday season for decades (and they're likely to remain so for decades more to come). Being in the annual Christmas movie business is good business. Just look at what Hallmark cranks out every year around the winter holidays. But the real money is in making that one movie that winds up in the rotation annually, becoming part of the larger cultural conversation surrounding Christmas.
In 1989, Warner Bros. released the third installment in the "Vacation" franchise following National Lampoon's "Vacation" in 1983 and "European Vacation" in 1985. Wisely, with this third entry, the property went the Christmas route...

Fans of "The Boys" may have wondered why Madelyn Stillwell, the scheming Vought VP who forges a dangerous, intimate alliance with Homelander in season 1, seemed so familiar. The reason is that there's a very good chance they've seen the actress Elizabeth Shue in a previous film or movie. Shue isn't quite a household name, but her number of minor roles stretches back all the way to the '80s, when she was starring in Burger King ads alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar.
One of her biggest roles was as Marty's girlfriend Jennifer in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, although she didn't play Jennifer for all of it. The first film had Claudia Wells in the role; it makes for a jarring experience when binge-watching the movies today, as the second movie starts off with a recreation of the first film's final scene, except we're watching a different version of Jennifer with no explanation given.

The Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” is coming back next year. And we have some new details.

Watch the teaser below and we will break it down.
“In the fall of 1987,” the teaser states, “one last adventure begins.” (There had been speculation that the final season would take place at Christmas – could it be so epic that it stretches from the fall to the winter?) Interestingly, 1987 was the year of “The Lost Boys,” “Spaceballs,” “Robocop,” “Adventures in Babysitting” and “Batteries Not Included” – all, undoubtedly, hallmarks for the series. Women don’t have it easy in Hollywood. And they didn’t back in the ’80s when former New York Times Magazine editor Lynda Obst got her start as a producer. As famously chronicled in her 1996 book “Hello, He Lied — and Other Truths from the Hollywood Trenches,” she sold her first movie “Flashdance” (1983) to Dawn Steel at Paramount, only to have the newly minted production team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer take over along with all the credit for its breakout success. Still, it was a winner for the Associate Producer, and she was on her way.
Always a heavy smoker, Obst passed away at age 74 from Copd (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). She was devoted to her family, including her brother, agent Rick Rosen, and son Oly, a producer/manager, whom she has described as “my confidant and best friend.”

Lynda Obst, who had producing credits on high-profile films including “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Flashdance” and “Adventures in Babysitting,” died Tuesday in Los Angeles. She was 74.
“I was immensely proud of her. She was a trailblazer for women in the industry at a time when it was very difficult for women to have prominent roles. She was passionate about her work but even more passionate about her family,” her brother, WME’s Rick Rosen, said to Variety.
Obst told the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that she had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Most recently, she served as producer or executive producer on TV series including “The Hot Zone,” “Good Girls Revolt,” “Hot in Cleveland” and “Helix.” Obst’s final feature producing credit was Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” in 2014. Among her other credits were “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Hope Floats,” “Bad Girls” and “The Fisher King.

With all eyes suddenly on Peacocks new horror thriller Hysteria!, series star and Evil Dead legend Bruce Campbell recently told MovieWeb that the eight-episode ride is, creepy as hell, but cool. The icon is definitely spot on.
Set in the 1980s, showrunner Matthew Scott Kanes tale revolves around the residents of a small town braving the Satanic Panic. Led by a solid ensemble cast featuring Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Nikki Hahn (Adventures in Babysitting), and others, the series packs in plenty of mystery, fright, and a gaggle of absurdity along the way, of which, Campbell noted:
Look, every time you talk about the possibility that the S-word that Satan might actually be real it's enough to install terror into the hearts of most Americans. If you're a God-fearing person, you don't want to hear that there might be something happening in your town that you can't...

Reflecting the breadth of her legacy across different continents, French actor Isabelle Huppert was celebrated by the likes of Alfonso Cuarón, Claire Denis, Alejandro Jodorowsky and François Ozon at the 15th edition of the Lumiere Film Festival in Lyon where she received a sprawling career tribute on Oct. 18.
Huppert kicked off the festivities as she entered the 3000-seat auditorium dancing to the 1980’s disco beats of “Nuit de folie,” dressed in a shimmery champagne gown.
The joyful ceremony, emceed by Huppert’s longtime friend (and Cannes boss) Thierry Fremaux who runs the Lumiere Film Festival, was punctuated by live musical numbers ranging widely from Camelia Jordana’s singing a capella “I Will Survive,” to Julien Clerc performing his 1978 cult song “Ma Preference” by the piano, and French actor Sandrine Kiberlain playfully singing “Nuit de folie” which was said to be Huppert’s unexpected all-time favorite song.

Reagan is a historical biopic that recounts the turbulent life of President Ronald Reagan, from his rise through the Hollywood industry to his appointment as President of the United States. Reagan has been played on-screen by multiple actors in several different projects throughout the years, but Reagan aims to dissect the man behind the president, telling the story of glitz and glamor thats often forgotten when discussing his politics.
The film features an A-list cast of recognizable faces who bring this fascinating story to life with bold, audacious performances that give Reagan a very distinct style. Its not as overtly dramatic and intense as other biopics like JFK - instead, it adopts a more lighthearted and sensational tone to reflect the unique atmosphere of Reagans time in office. Movies about US Presidents are becoming more and more common, with The Apprentice famously depicting the wild life of Donald Trump, but...

Though not exactly a darling of the critics, Oscar nominee Chris Columbus has created a number of box office hits throughout his 30 year career. Let’s take a look back at all 15 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Columbus rose to prominence as a hot young screenwriter after penning such titles as “Gremlins” (1984), “The Goonies” (1985) and “Young Sherlock Holmes” (1985). He made his directorial debut when he was just 29-years-old with the teenage comedy “Adventures in Babysitting” (1987) before raking in the box office dollars with “Home Alone” (1990), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001), to name but a few.
Though he’s seldom received awards recognition as a writer or director, Columbus has had success in that regard as a producer, earning an Oscar nomination in Best Picture for “The Help” (2011), for which he also competed at the PGA and BAFTA. He won...

The Marvel Comics character Thor officially made his live-action debut in the 1988 TV movie The Incredible Hulk Returns. But the year before that, Thor was a major presence in a teen comedy film about a group of youngsters having a wild night in downtown Chicago. The kids deal with gun-wielding car thieves, knife-wielding gang members, a homicidal tow truck driver, and a lot of other odd characters and dangerous situations. Their lives are put at risk on multiple occasions. And throughout, Thor’s iconic helmet is worn by an eight-year-old girl who looks up to the character… and believes he’s real. By the time the night is over, she might be proven right… Or maybe not. Whatever the case, there’s a whole lot of Thor in the 1987 film Adventures in Babysitting (watch it Here). Who wants to travel back to a time when the most significant threat to the nation was a red-scaled demon with a bifurcated tail and great taste in music? That’s right, folks! That fear haunts every generation. Children of the Atomic Age went on to terrifying their families by turning on, tuning in and dropping out in the sixties. Those same “free spirits” went on to vote for Reagan and called for censorship of the “obscene” and “satanic” heavy metal bands their own kids worshiped. Few filmmakers can claim to have helped shape an entire era of cinema, but the boom in 1990s indie cinema is impossible to imagine without producer Stacey Sher.
“If you say, U.S. independent cinema of the ’90s, whatever film touched your feelings, your emotions and your memory, most probably, it has Stacey involved in it,” says Locarno film festival artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, on the reason Locarno is honoring Sher with its 2024 Premio Raimondo Rezzonico, or best independent producer, award.
After a six-year mentorship under legendary producers Deborah Hill and Linda Obst, making such films as Chris Columbus’ debut Adventures in Babysitting and Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King, Sher joined the Danny DeVito and Michael Shamberg’s newly-founded indie shingle Jersey Films, soon becoming a partner. At Jersey, she was instrumental in championing a new generation of directors — Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Andrew Niccol, Ben Stiller — whose films would define a decade.

Darren Starr's primetime soap opera "Melrose Place" debuted on July 8, 1992, initially sold as a spinoff of the ultra-hot "Beverly Hills 90210." The series followed the denizens of the titular apartment complex, said to be located at 4616 Melrose in West Hollywood, California. "Melrose Place" was a massive success and was replete with all the sex, angst, and topical interpersonal drama that typically appeared in a TV series produced by Aaron Spelling. The show lasted seven seasons and 226 episodes. "Melrose Place" birthed a spinoff in 1995 called "Models, Inc." and was revived (with a new cast of characters) for an additional season in 2009.
On "Melrose Place," actor and professional soccer player Andrew Shue played Billy Campbell, an aspiring screenwriter, cab driver, ad executive, or newspaperman, depending on what season you're watching. Oscar nominations were announced in Los Angeles at 5:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. The backlash began by sunrise. Barbie received eight nominations, including for best picture, but where were individual nods for director Greta Gerwig or star Margot Robbie, the A-list architects who constructed a billion-dollar blockbuster out of an $18 plastic doll that was born in 1959? Barbie fans went berserk online, denouncing the Academy for what they saw as a sexist snub. Breathless press coverage of the controversy dominated the news cycle for days, and even Hillary Clinton weighed in to support her shunned sisters.
By Jan. 26, producer Lynda Obst had heard enough. “I have to write about this misplaced horror,” Obst unloaded on Facebook, offering a history lesson pulled from personal experience, reminding her readers that comedies rarely fare well at the Academy Awards in top categories. Furthermore, she and best friend Nora Ephron “didn’t flip out” when...

The world of Harry Potter, bursting with magic and adventure, has enchanted readers and moviegoers for years. While the eight films brought the books to life, the series had four different directors, each with their take on the story.
A still from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone
Chris Columbus, who directed the first two films, established a magical and lighthearted tone that many fans loved. He was replaced by Alfonso Cuarón for the third movie, by Mike Newell in the fourth movie, and finally, David Yates took over for the final half of the epic story. However, many fans still wonder what could have been if Columbus remained at the helm for the entire series.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.
With Hollywood quick to hop on this trend train, what resulted was a wealth of interesting Frankenstein-style film ideas that simultaneously displayed the absurd excess and nostalgic conservatism the...
