10 Worst Rated ‘Stranger Things’ Episode That Deserves a Second Look
Image
When it comes to Stranger Things, “worst-rated” feels like an insult to the Upside Down itself. But hey, even the best shows have episodes that get unfairly ghosted by fans. Not every chapter can be a monster-slaying, synth-blaring, Max-floating-on-air masterpiece. Some episodes just exist in the shadows, like that one Demodog, we all forgot about.

But here’s the thing, these so-called duds? They’re actually lowkey brilliant. They might not have made Twitter trend lists or sparked a thousand Halloween costumes, but they have charm, character moments, and, sometimes, most real emotional punches.

Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Eduardo Franco in Chapter Nine: The Piggyback (Credits- Netflix)

And let’s be honest here: we’re all guilty of skipping certain episodes on rewatches, but maybe it’s time to stop being basic and start appreciating the deep cuts. You know, the episodes that dared to be weird,...

This Most-Watched Free-to-Stream Horror Movie Stars an Iconic Legend of Genre Cinema
Image
The most-watched horror film on Amazon Freevee today is a farcical effort starring the iconic Danny Trejo. I’m talking about John Gulager’s latest film, Seven Cemeteries (stylized on the one sheet as Se7en Cemeteries). The film has been charting in the top 10 on Freevee for the past several days, and today, Seven Cemeteries sits as the third most-watched film on the service overall.

To call this horror picture campy might be an understatement. After all, the flick follows a recently paroled Danny Trejo and his army of undead sidekicks as they face off against a drug impresario. If you need an escape from reality, this may be just the ticket.

In the film, “A recent parolee gets a Mexican witch to resurrect his old posse so that they can help him save a woman’s ranch from a ruthless drug lord.“

I haven’t had the chance...

Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II is coming to 4K, Prom Night III: The Last Kiss and Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil releases also in the works
Image
Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now, they’re working on several follow-up projects, including a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Fright Night Part 2 – and a deluxe edition 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II! Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher announced the Prom Night II project on social media, where he also revealed that Blu-ray releases of Prom Night III: The Last Kiss and Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil are in the works. Whether or not the other sequels get 4K upgrades will depend on what materials are available for them. Synapse does have the rights required to bring the original Prom Night to 4K Uhd as well, but...

Fright Night Part 2 (1988) is getting a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release
Image
Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now Synapse and Red Shirt have announced that they’ll also be giving the deluxe edition treatment to the 1988 vampire sequel Fright Night Part 2! A lot of fans have resorted to buying bootlegs just to have a good copy of this movie on DVD, but now it’s getting an official 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release. According to Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher, it’s likely to be released sometime in 2026.

Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who takes over from the first film’s Tom Holland, and scripted by Tim Metcalfe, Miguel Tejada-Flores, and Wallace, Fright Night Part 2 features young Charley Brewer, fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, and the...

We had a blast checking out The World of Tim Burton Exhibit in London!
Image
Tim Burton is one of the most visually inventive filmmakers of all time, and his work doesn’t just have its own unique visual flair, it is also wonderfully macabre. He came to prominence in the early 1980s with short movies such as Vincent from 1982, and 1984’s Frankenweenie, and followed them up with classic films like Beetlejuice and Batman towards the end of the 80s. Burton went on to make numerous other weird and wonderful movies, and he’s currently putting the finishing touches to the second season of the well-received Wednesday from 2022. And, oh yeah, his latest movie, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice just grossed half a billion dollars!

I’ve always found Burton’s work to be hugely influential from a design perspective, and if you look at any of his creations, from Jack Skellington, to Edward Scissorhands, there’s no doubt that they’re Tim Burton characters. In October of this year,...

8 Overlooked DC Heroes We Need DC to Revive Asap
Image
Over the years, DC Comics has introduced countless superheroes to the world, including icons like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. However, not every superhero attains that level of mainstream fame, as many end up falling to the wayside with time. The DC Universe is vast, and there are plenty of lesser-known heroes who don't get nearly enough recognition. And it's about time that changed.

Some characters within DC lore may have been popular once, but have since been neglected as others surpassed them in the public eye. With god-like figures and renowned warriors at the forefront of the Justice League, it stands to reason that underdogs would pale in comparison. Still, these heroes deserve as much of a fair shot as the likes of the Trinity, and DC's All In era is the perfect opportunity for them to be revived. Here are 8 overlooked heroes that DC needs to bring back into the spotlight.

Trick or Treat (1986) is getting a standard edition 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release in March
Image
We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, would be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. They were originally aiming for a Halloween 2023 release, but since they missed that month they ended up giving the movie a limited edition release last month. Those 6,666 units sold out so fast, with fans crashing the Synapse Films website along the way, that the company has now wisely decided to put together a standard edition of the Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release as well. Today, they announced that the street date for the standard edition is March 11th.

Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis:...

No False Metal: Sammi Curr Lives With New 4K Release of 1986’s ‘Trick or Treat’ [Review]
Image
After a generic DVD run and Blu-rays released outside the U.S. market under the name Ragman, Synapse Films has answered the prayers of many horror-metal fans with the recent 4K release of 1986’s Trick or Treat. Having “No Wimps” and “No False Metal,” this film is considered by many to be the quintessential heavy metal horror flick, partially thanks to a perfectly apropos soundtrack provided by the band Fastway.

After constantly being harassed by the cool kids at his high school, Eddie Weinbauer aka “Ragman” finds solace in listening to the music of his idol Sammi Curr to get through the abuse. Not only is he a famous heavy metal star, but Curr is also an alum at Eddie’s high school where he became an outcast-made-good into metal stardom. And this is why Eddie feels a faux bond and extreme idolization for Curr since he believes they share the same origin story,...

The Top 10 Sitcom Halloween Episodes From ‘Community’ to ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’
Image
Halloween is upon us, so stay safe out there — and stay away from the taco meat.

Tonight, America’s costumed children will venture out in search of treats, trickster teenagers will commit playful acts of vandalism and us older, sensible folk will hole up in our homes, eat candy and re-watch festive, barely frightening and deliciously nostalgic TV shows and movies from our own childhoods.

While horror films are the traditional fare for a night such as tonight, the last half-century of American culture embracing the theme of the season has led to every syndicated TV show at least attempting a Halloween episode, and, for those of us who prefer laughs to gasps, we’d rather settle in with a sitcom than a slasher while we eat cupcakes decorated like skulls and drink punch that we’ll pretend is blood.

But although most every American sitcom has made at least one Halloween episode,...

Joaquin Phoenix in Her (2013)

For many of us, Halloween is our favorite holiday – and to celebrate, the staff at JoBlo Horror Originals has put together a new video to showcase some of our favorite horror movie quotes of all time. This ranges from cult classic lines we repeat to our friends in private to popular lines that are referenced in all of pop culture, and we’re getting into them all. This 80s Horror Movie Is the Metal Version of 'Carrie' Meets Freddy Krueger
Image
Heavy metal horror is a genre that was born, peaked, and all but died out in the 1980s. It was a time when the satanic panic was in full swing, and people like Tipper Gore were telling everybody that heavy metal music was carving up the souls of Americas youth and serving them straight to the devil. Naturally, filmmakers would jump at the chance to lampoon this idea by exploiting it in horror movies, with one such film being 1986's Trick or Treat.

Trick Or Treat Limited Edition 4K Uhd + Blu-ray: "From the early days of DVD, one movie more than any other has been requested by horror fans and metal heads all over: Charles Martin Smith’s heavy metal horror classic Trick Or Treat. A box office disappointment that found a wide following on home video and cable in the 80s and 90s, it’s been curiously out of reach to fans, who would rely on dubious DVDs and imports to get their Halloween heavy horror treat. Now, Red Shirt Pictures and Synapse Films are finally bringing the much-anticipated Trick Or Treat to your door in a definitive Limited Edition 4K Uhd/Blu-ray that will make every day Halloween for horror fanatics and headbangers!

Rock ‘n’ roll never dies. Sometimes, it even gets a second life. At least that’s the case for 1986 cult horror favorite Trick or Treat, as Synapse Films has delivered a surprise Halloween treat by launching preorders for the horror film’s 4K world premiere.

5 Memorable Tales of Kid-Friendly Halloween Horror from TV Anthologies
Image
Although Halloween is embraced by all ages these days, it was mostly a children’s holiday not all that long ago. What is essentially now a multi-month event was a single day of fun back then. The real world has changed in this regard, but some things stay the same in TV anthologies; kids are still the focal point in stories about Halloween.

In episodic anthologies rooted in horror, Halloween stories occasionally happen but are not guaranteed or even timely. Horror series, after all, do not rely on Halloween in order to be horror. The chances are, though, if an episode is all about Halloween, the protagonists are probably young.

Here are five must-watch tales of kid-friendly Halloween horror from TV anthologies.

Tales from the Darkside (1983-1988)

Trick or Treat

Interest in a Creepshow TV series back in the ‘80s led to the creation of Tales from the Darkside. Before...

The Elevator Quiz in particular is sprung at you at a seemingly very random moment. You might feel tempted to skip over it because it feels too difficult to solve but don’t worry.

S. William Hinzman in FleshEater (1988)
JoBlo Horror Originals staff members share their Halloween movie picks
S. William Hinzman in FleshEater (1988)
Over on the JoBlo Horror Originals YouTube channel, we talk about horror movies and TV shows all year long – but that doesn’t mean that the “spooky season” building up to Halloween isn’t a special time of the year for us. I may watch horror movies all year, but for me October is a month-long horror marathon where I try to pack as many horror movies into each day as possible. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and it’s the day when I make sure to watch the likes of FleshEater (1988), Murder Party (2007), The Hollow (2004), Trick or Treat (1986), and Trick ‘r Treat (2007). And maybe something involving Michael Myers. In anticipation of the Halloween festivities, several of our JoBlo Horror Originals staff members got together to give some horror movie recommendations – and you can watch them reveal their Halloween viewing picks in the video embedded above!

Seven Cemeteries trailer: Danny Trejo raises the dead to take on a drug lord
Image
Almost twenty years ago, viewers of the Project Greenlight reality TV series got to watch as John Gulager was hired to direct the creature feature Feast for a producing team that included Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Wes Craven. Feast went over well enough that Gulager was brought back to helm back-to-back sequels, Feast II: Sloppy Seconds and Feast III: The Happy Finish. Since then, he has gone on to direct Piranha 3Dd, Zombie Night, and Children of the Corn: Runaway. His latest movie is the action thriller Seven Cemeteries, which was just given a theatrical and digital release today, October 11th, and on Amazon it’s available to rent for the price of $6.99 or purchase for $14.99. To help you decide whether or not Seven Cemeteries is a movie you’d like to check out, we have the trailer embedded above.

MonsterVerse Movies Ranked: From Worst to Best
Image
A few months ago, we got the release of the fifth film in WB/Legendary’s MonsterVerse saga, Godzilla x Kong: The New Era. These films have attempted to somewhat reinvent the traditional Kaiju film for Western audiences, with our mighty monster heroes being called Titans. While the franchise arguably stumbled out of the gate with director Gareth Edwards’ coolly received Godzilla, the saga has steadily grown in popularity, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was a big hit. But how do the films stack up against each other? Let’s take a look with our MonsterVerse Movies Ranked List!

Godzilla (2014)

Audiences were pretty hyped for Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla reboot, with awesome early trailers that used Ligeti’s Requiem II from 2001: A Space Odyssey, promising the most intense Kaiju movie to date. It didn’t really work out that way, with many complaining about how dull the film was,...

Late Motörhead Guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke to Be Immortalized with Biography, 4-cd Set
Image
Late Motörhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke is the subject of a forthcoming 320-page biography and a 4-cd box set, both arriving September 6th via BMG.

Make My Day: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Story of Fast Eddie Clarke was penned by rock journalist Kris Needs with Clarke’s widow Mariko Fujiwara. The book follows Clarke’s life and career from his formative years in the burgeoning UK rock scene, through his legendary run with Motörhead from 1976 to 1982 and his subsequent hard rock/Aor band Fastway and beyond.

“Mariko and Eddie’s closest friends provide detailed insights into Eddie’s life, including growing up in Twickenham, topping charts with Motörhead, overcoming personal problems, finding happiness with Mariko and becoming the smitten co-owner of Cookie the Maltese-Shihtzu cross,” reads the book’s press release.

As for the author, Kris Needs served as the editor of one of the UK’s earliest music zines,...

We found out last year that the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, will be getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release from Synapse Films. The case art images come our way from Dawn of the Discs:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
Curb Your Enthusiasm Episodes That Define Its Signature Humor
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, and Michael Richards in Seinfeld (1989)
While it may have followed Seinfeld as Larry David's second major TV series, Curb Your Enthusiasm has the most unique voice of any TV series of the modern era.

While set almost entirely in Los Angeles, Curb has a very New York-centric and Jewish sensibility. And at the center of it all is Larry David, playing a probably-not-that-exaggerated version of himself.

The show started in October of 1999 as a one-off HBO special, meant to depict the return to stand-up comedy of Larry David, best known at that point as the co-creator of Seinfeld.

He was playing a version of Larry, who is independently wealthy yet seemingly never far from a confrontation about something small.

It soon became a surprisingly long-running comedy series, as its final season launched in February of 2024, nearly 25 years after that special.

Squid Game: The Challenge: How Long Is the Season & When Is the Finale?
Image
Squid Game: The Challenge consists of 10 episodes, with the first five released on November 22 and the remaining four on November 29. The season finale will air on December 6, revealing the winner of the $4.56 million prize. The challenges in Squid Game: The Challenge closely resemble those in the original series, with controversial moments like injuries during the Red Light, Green Light game and disagreement over carving an umbrella shape. The upcoming episodes leading to the finale will feature a marble game, new twists compared to the original show, and increasing tension among the contestants. The unpredictable nature of the competition makes it a unique and interesting social experiment.

After the South Korean television series Squid Game became Netflix's most-watched show in 2021, the idea of turning the popular series into a reality show arose. And two years later, audiences welcomed Squid Game: The Challenge on small screens with high hopes. It is...

‘The Devil Went Down to Islington’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Michael Smiley, Dominic Coleman, Spencer Brown, James Lance, Sophie Colquhoun | Written by Rutger Andrée Wiltens, Alex Martin | Directed by Daniel Wilson

Tales of musicians who sold their soul for fame are common enough, Crossroads, Trick or Treat, Dark Roads 79 and The 27 Club are just a few examples. The Devil Went Down to Islington is a little different, however. It tells the tale of a music teacher who makes a Faustian bargain while drunk, only to panic when he realizes what he’s done.

It actually opens like a bizarre action film with Father Crowley using switchblade crosses to fight a pair of masked figures who are attacking a panicked man. He defeats them, but in the end Satan claims another soul.

John Robertson Has had a morning from hell, and he hasn’t even sold his soul yet. He fails to save his cat from the garbage truck, then an Ofsted inspector shows up,...

Image
The 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies, is getting a Blu-ray and 4K Uhd release (and possibly a new DVD release) from Synapse Films. We’re still waiting to hear a release date for that, as obviously the company wasn’t able to meet the hoped-for October release window – but while we wait for the special physical media release, Trick or Treat is set to making its streaming debut on the Screambox service this Friday, October 27th! Just in time for Halloween viewing!

Directed by Charles Martin Smith from a screenplay by Rhet Topham, Joel Soisson, and Michael S. Murphey (with an uncredited polish from the Final Destination duo of James Wong and Glen Morgan), Trick or Treat has the following synopsis: This mesmerizing horror adventure takes you into the terrifying dark side of rock’n’roll. Ragman is Perfect for a Dcu Live-Action Series
Image
The new Dcu is embracing the weirder aspects of DC Comics. Ragman is unique DC villain with mystical powers, fitting right into some of the more supernatural projects. A Ragman project can draw inspiration from a famous spy-thriller series.

When DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn announced plans for the first slate of the Dcu, he included a range of movies and TV shows that touch upon different genres. Among the new series like Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and Booster Gold, genres vary from mystery to political drama. By delving into different genres for each series, Gunn and the showrunners can highlight what makes their individual stories stand out and what makes these characters unique. Given his directing credits and as the creator of HBO's Peacemaker, it's clear that James Gunn has an eye for making stars out of mostly unknown and somewhat unusual characters. A DC Comics superhero who would be...

Cool Stuff: The Super Rare Halloween Novelization Is Being Re-Released With New Illustrations
Image
When I was a younger man, I used to love movie novelizations. These paperbacks would often add context to films, create whole new scenes, and give you a unique glimpse into the world of a movie that you might not get from watching alone. It was special. The movie novelization seems to be a dying art form these days, which is a shame. While they still exist, they don't seem as prevalent as they once were. Thankfully, we still have the classics. One such classic novelization is Curtis Richards' take on John Carpenter's "Halloween."

Published by Bantam Books in 1979, the novelization wasn't just a standard adaptation of Carpenter and Debra Hill's now-iconic script — it also added entirely new material, like a flashback that provides some background about the curse of Samhain, some stuff about cults, and more time with serial killer Michael Myers during his asylum days. Michael's...

How ‘And Just Like That…’ Season Three Can Actually Be Good TV
Image
And just like that… another chaotic, traumatizing, and strangely addictive season of And Just Like That… has come to an end. Season Two introduced penis pumps and a palatial new apartment into Carrie Bradshaw’s world, plus the reappearance of her former flame Aidan Shaw and the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it return of Samantha Jones.

Ahead of the finale, it was announced that Ajlt would be returning for a third season. Max’s Head of Content Sarah Aubrey said in a statement that Season Two ranks as the most-streamed Max original and...

Trick or Treat (1986)
‘And Just Like That’ Star Sara Ramírez Condemns ‘Increasingly Hostile’ Treatment After Critical Magazine Profile
Trick or Treat (1986)
“And Just Like That…” star Sara Ramírez has addressed a magazine profile written about her that could be read as an attempt to use humor to take down the actor and their character on the Max show.

In the June 2023 piece by The Cut, writer Brock Colyar draws parallels between their “And Just Like That…” character Che Diaz and Ramírez that the actor doesn’t agree with.

“I am a human being, an artist, an actor,” Ramírez said in a Tuesday post to Instagram. “And we are living in a world that has become increasingly hostile toward anyone who dares to free themselves from the gender binary, or disrupt the mainstream.”

The Cut story also mentions Ramírez’s theory that perhaps the show’s team “was just being cheeky and trolling us all about how self-serious we get over the politics of representation on a fizzy sitcom.”

The reaction to...

‘And Just Like That’ Season 2 Release Schedule: When Does The Season Finale Air?
Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Sara Ramirez in And Just Like That (2021)
“And Just Like That” is back on Max for a second season, and it’s bringing some famous — and familiar — faces.

Kim Cattrall confirmed that she will reprise her role of Samantha Jones in an on-camera cameo. Her character communicated with Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) via text message throughout the first season, including Mr. Big’s funeral and the Paris finale.

A slim and trim John Corbett will return as Carrie’s former fiance Aidan Shaw as she moves on from the death of her husband.

“Sex and the City” fans will also be thrilled that Candice Bergen will reprise her role as Carrie’s former editor Enid Frick. Julie Halston will also be back as socialite Bitsy Von Muffling, who is as delightful as her name.

Of course, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are back as Charlotte York Goldenblatt and Miranda Hobbes, Carrie’s longtime BFFs.

And Just Like That: Why Fans Find Che Diaz Annoying (& Why S2 Fixes That)
Image
Che Diaz initially annoyed fans as a one-dimensional character in And Just Like That... season 1, but their own storyline in season 2 has allowed them to grow and evolve. The show's attempt to be modern and progressive backfired with Che Diaz's character, reducing them to a prop for the main characters. However, season 2 has addressed this issue. Che's quest to get a sitcom pilot picked up in season 2 has given them depth and emotional complexity, improving their character and making them more relatable to the audience.
