Unlike its competitors, 9-1-1 places a great deal of focus on its characters. The cases are still important to the show, but how the firefighters respond to them is the procedural's biggest draw. The 118 are passionate heroes, but the show allows fans to see the nuances of their personal lives, which gives 9-1-1 an added scoop of drama.
However, it's fair to say that 9-1-1 would be less impressive without Howard Han. Complete with a unique charm and a kind heart, Han showcases the high levels of compassion needed to work in this line of work. Despite being a main character for eight seasons, I can't help but think that the show has repeatedly undermined him. As such, 9-1-1's...

Actors from Broadway’s Newsies, Suffs, and other stage productions are doing their part to encourage people to vote. The actors released a video featuring a medley of remixed Newsies tracks, including renditions of “Carrying the Banner” and “Seize the Day” reframed for the 2024 election.
Similar to the Broadway Newsies production, based on the 1992 Disney film of the same name, the remix video begins with newsboy Jack Kelly rallying an army of townspeople to participate in the next election. “Running your mouth don’t change nothing, spot,” Jack said in the video.

Picketers gathered outside Warner Bros. in Burbank today found themselves buoyed by a unique presence: Flavor Flav. The hip-hop icon-turned-reality star showed up to cheers from the assembled WGA supporters.
Dressed in a festive yellow-and-blue track suit and wearing a demure (for him) red clock around his neck, the Public Enemy also brought a boombox and blasted the group’s classic “Fight the Power.”
Possibly even better, Flav brought a lot of food.
“A true spread of burgers and pizzas at Warner Bros courtesy of Flava Flav!” wrote Abbott Elementary writer-producer Brittani Nichols on Twitter above a photo of the rapper delivering at least a dozen boxes of grub.

It will come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the career of director Mark Romanek that his newest work, “Loop,” the pilot episode for eight-episode Amazon Studios series “Tales From the Loop,” is as visually arresting as it is conceptually bold and emotionally evocative.
Best-known for his work on some of the past two decades’ most audacious and powerful music videos and commercials, Romanek has accrued multiple Grammy Awards for his clips for stars from Fiona Apple to Johnny Cash, Taylor Swift to Michael Jackson, Jay-Z to Joni Mitchell, Nine Inch Nails to Madonna. Prizes at Cannes Lions and more have come his way for innovative, emotive spots for Apple, Tiffany, Nike and American Express, among others.
Romanek’s feature film resume is shorter, but just as powerful, with Robin Williams-starrer “One Hour Photo” and his adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s “Never Let Me Go” both visionary...

The 118 is back and so are all their emergencies — both professional and personal. On Monday, Season 3 of Fox’s “9-1-1” returned from its long winter hiatus to find Howie/”Chimney” (Kenneth Choi) dealing with some very unexpected family drama, Michael (Rockmond Dunbar) making a controversial decision about his cancer treatment plans and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) finally moving on from her traumatic past with Doug (Brian Hallisay).
TheWrap broke down all these threads from the episode, titled “Seize the Day,” with “9-1-1” showrunner Tim Minear, starting with Chimney’s storyline, which focused on the appearance of his 20-year-old half-brother Albert on his doorstep. Given the fact that his parents split when he was young, Chimney doesn’t know his sibling at all. His father left Chimney to be raised by his mother in America and went back to South...

Doomsdays is not another big budget, effects laden, apocalyptic blockbuster about the end of days. This is the exact opposite. Writer and director Eddie Mullins tells the story of two aimless squatters who wander from one lavish vacation home to another in the Catskills, breaking in and making themselves at home. Justin Rice plays Dirty Fred, the more cultured and outwardly intellectual of the two men. Leo Fitzpatrick plays Bruho, the less stable, paranoid loose cannon. Both men live life by their own rules, which for the most part, means there are no rules.
Dirty Fred and Bruho’s daily life goes on swimmingly, unencumbered by law or societal expectations for some time. They take what they need, do what they want, and generally cause havoc and mischief as necessary for their own amusement. One day, they meet Jaidon, played by Brian Charles Johnson. Jaidon is a husky runaway teenager with limited social skills,...

Hollywood’s impossibly handsome leading man-cum-conscience George Clooney modestly thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for keeping small films alive, in picking up the group’s Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes tonight.
“Big ones do fine; it’s the small ones that need the audience,” said Clooney, who’s known for his “one for them, one for me” approach to his career.
Leave it to Clooney to put the trophy show in perspective. “For the record, if you’re in this room you’ve caught the brass ring,” he told the crowd. “You get to do what you’ve always dreamed to do and be celebrated for it, and it ain’t losing.”
That said, Clooney noted that awards don’t really mean much in the long run. “I don’t remember how many awards Lauren Bacall won. I remember her saying, ‘Just put your lips together and blow.

George Clooney received the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. DeMille award at Sunday’s Golden Globes and reflected on his career, new marriage and the French terror attacks in a short and sweet acceptance speech.
“Today was an extraordinary day,” Clooney said of worldwide marches in the wake of the shootings and hostage situations plaguing France, “they were Christians, and Jews and Muslims, they were world leaders, and they weren’t marching in protest, but in the spirit that we won’t walk in fear.”

The annual rollout of Christmas songs is often a rushed, haphazard affair: You can only take so many versions of "Sleigh Ride" crammed into your Black Friday commute before you crack. So to help you cope, we've created this Christmas Song Advent Calendar. Play one of these songs each day as we approach Christmas to help you get in the spirit. Dec. 1: "Jingle Bells" Obviously we started with this song because it is so cliché. That's why we're publishing this the day after we picked it. Beyond one listen this holiday season, there's no reason to play "Jingle Bells...

Disney Theatrical's record-breaking and Tony Award winning phenomenon Newsies features a score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, choreography by Christopher Gattelli and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The stage version introduces seven brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including ‘Carrying the Banner’, ‘Seize the Day,’ ‘King of New York’ and ‘Santa Fe.’ Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack...

Bad news for the city's newsboy cap producers: According to the New York Times, Disney will shutter its hit Broadway musical Newsies this August after a two and a half–year run. The show was an unexpected success for Disney Theatrical, becoming the fastest-recouping show in the company's history and finding a breakout star in original lead actor Jeremy Jordan (Smash). While Disney did not provide a reason for the closure, a dip in ticket sales is likely a factor: The Times reports that "ticket sales have softened in a fairly typical way for a musical that, while popular, never became a blockbuster." Yet while Newsies will leave its home at the Nederlander Theatre on August 24th, it wont be your last chance to see Jack Kelly and Crutchie in action: The musical will be going on a 25-city North American tour launching in October. Seize the day, etc., etc.

What better way to start your week than with an a cappella Newsies medley? We have Brigham Young University's a cappella group Vocal Point -- in part -- to thank for the above video, which offers an impressive four-minute performance that features numerous songs from Disney's Newsies. The medley itself is well worth a listen, particularly for those who are fans of Newsies, but the video is especially impressive when we take into account that the whole thing was shot in one take. Directed and produced by Jeff Parkin, and shot at the Utah County Historic Courthouse, the video begins on the steps outside with "Seize the Day," before a cappella group Vocal Point and the dancers -- the video credits three Byu dance groups for their participation -- head inside to "King of New York." When the act moves upstairs, the song shifts to "Santa Fe." Then it's back...

On March 31, New York’s McC Theater held its raucous Miscast gala, an annual fundraiser honoring one veteran theater artist — this year, the fearless Allison Janney — with a concert program line-up that features Broadway stars performing songs typically sung by the opposite gender. Last year, you might remember Jeremy Jordan and Jonathan Groff stopping the show with Smash’s “Let Me Be Your Star.” This year was no different, but we’ll get to that. First, Janney.
