Roland Joffé To Direct ‘The Legitimate Wiseguy’ About Chicago Outfit Mobster Tony Spilotro And The Kid He Mentored
Roland Joffé in Les amants du nouveau monde (1995)
He was one of the most ruthless, feared and notorious criminals ever to come out of the Chicago Outfit: Anthony ‘Tony the Ant’ Spilotro. Now, Roland Joffé and Chicagoan Nicholas Celozzi, who is the grand nephew of the late mob boss Sam Giancana and thought of Spilotro as his second father, are bringing Celozzi’s personal story with the mobster to the big screen. The film, The Legitimate Wiseguy, will be directed by Joffé, who was nominated for two Oscars for his brilliant work in the 1980s with The Mission and The Killing Fields.

The film is being described as a contemporary Bronx Tale and was scripted by Celozzi and James McGrath.

Monaco Films, founded by Celozzi and partner Michael Sportelli, will co-produce with financier/developer John Vojtech. The producers will start casting for the film’s three main lead roles — Spilotro, Celozzi and Celozzi, Sr.

Once casting is complete...

Class of 88: Director Tony Randel on Taking the Reins for Hellbound: Hellraiser II
Released in theaters a little more than 14 months after its predecessor, Hellbound: Hellraiser II had the unenviable task of following up one of the most innovative and boundary-pushing genre films of the 1980s. Tony Randel took over the directorial duties on Hellbound, and he did a brilliant job sidestepping the pitfalls that can often trip up a sequel film effort, ambitiously blazing a new path in the Hellraiser universe by taking viewers into the labyrinthine realm of Leviathan and providing fans with a greater understanding of the franchise’s Cenobite antiheroes as well. Hellraiser II also introduces one of the series’ most dominant and unforgettable villains by way of Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham) and transforms Hellraiser’s wicked stepmother Julia (Clare Higgins) into a bona fide evil queen.

Simply put, Hellraiser II is a perfect example of what every filmmaker at the helm of a sequel should aspire to achieve,...

Mindy Newell: Making The Cut
Mindy went to her grandson’s bris today. Meyer Manuel, known in Hebrew as Avraham, is named for all three grandfathers. He had his first taste of wine, too, suckling on a cloth dipped in Manischevitz. It’s supposed to “quiet the baby,” which means lead him into a drunken stupor, so that the pain of the circumcision will be dulled. It didn’t help.

Meyer Manual cried, and Alix wept, as did most everyone else; the only ones not crying were Jeff, who did look shaky but stayed strong, looked shaky but he managed okay. The only ones who didn’t cry were the moyel (the artist performing the procedure) and Grandma me – the moyel because, well, that’s his job – and also he was wonderful, attentive to Alix and Jeff and incredibly caring to Meyer Manuel – and as for me, well, I think because I’ve seen so...

Tony Jaa in L'honneur du dragon (2005)
Lucas Black rejoins 'Fast & Furious,' and we try once again to guess the plot of 'Fast 7'
Tony Jaa in L'honneur du dragon (2005)
Fast & Furious 7 has already added several new faces to the crash-happy franchise, including Kurt Russell, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, and probably several hundred cars that will soon meet their destruction in a metropolitan fireball of automotive calamity. But the series isn’t forgetting its roots: EW has confirmed that Lucas Black — who memorably essayed the part of White Dude in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift — will return for Fast & Furious 7.

Deadline originally reported that Black’s deal is actually for the next three Fasts, which implies that the franchise is world-building towards a genuine trilogy — a three-film saga...
