Miloš Forman's Academy Award-Winning Musical Biopic Is Streaming Free Now
Image
Miloš Forman's critically acclaimed biographical film Amadeus has found a new streaming home. The 1984 Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards starts streaming for free this month on Tubi. Other titles set to be added to Tubi's library include Oscar winners like Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction, Titanic, and Thelma & Louise.

The musical biopic was adapted by writer Peter Shaffer, who had already tackled the subject for his stage play in the late '70s. He was inspired by the 1830 stage play Mozart and Salieri by Russian playwright Alexander Pushkin. Amadeus follows Antonio Salieri's frequently debated contempt for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as the young musical prodigy revolutionized the musical scene in Vienna in the mid-1700s. Per the Rotten Tomatoes synopsis of the film:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri...

Classic Film to Get New Life with TV Series Told from Chief Bromden’s Perspective
Image
A classic movie is getting a fresh new take with a TV series that will tell the story from a different point of view. Paul Zaentz, who is the nephew of the original film’s producer Saul Zaentz, spoke on the indie filmmaking podcast Ck Café about plans to create a show focusing on Chief Bromden, one of the key characters.

“Just now, I’ve signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the Chief for the first season,” Zaentz shared. “Following the first season, we’ll see what happens to the Chief after he escapes.”

This is particularly notable because Ken Kesey, the author of the original novel, didn’t fully support the 1975 movie directed by Milos Forman.

The book is told from Chief Bromden’s perspective, but the film changed that. In the movie,...

Classic Movie Gets Small Screen Spinoff as New Series Adaptation in the Works
Image
‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ is set to inspire a new TV series, focusing on a fresh perspective from one of its most memorable characters. Paul Zaentz, producer and nephew of the original film’s producer, Saul Zaentz, revealed on the indie filmmaking podcast Ck Café that they have secured the rights to develop a series based on the story, told through the eyes of Chief Bromden.

“Just now, I’ve signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the Chief for the first season,” Zaentz said. “Following the first season, we’ll see what happens to the Chief after he escapes.”

This is especially interesting because the author of the original book, Ken Kesey, was not a fan of the 1975 film adaptation directed by Milos Forman.

Kesey’s novel was told from Chief Bromden’s point of view,...

Jack Nicholson’s 93% Rotten Tomatoes Psychological Comedy Drama Is Getting a Sequel TV Series 50 Years Later
Image
Another all-time cinematic classic is being revisited with a new series, this time from the perspective of one of its most memorable characters. During an episode of the Ck Café indie filmmaking podcast, producer Paul Zaentz, the nephew of producer Saul Zaentz, revealed that he has signed on to help originate a spin-off of the psychological dramedy One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, told through the lens of Chief Bromden. Compared to the 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson, the new show's change in perspective will look to stick closer to Ken Kesey's 1962 novel, which was narrated by the towering half-Native American. It isn't known whether any studios or creatives are attached at this time.

"Just now, I’ve signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the Chief for the first season," Zaentz shared during the episode.

Official ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ Spinoff Series In The Works From The Point Of View Of Chief Bromden
Image
An all-time movie classic is being spun off for the small screen as it has emerged that the rights holders behind One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest are cooking up a new series adaptation.

Speaking on indie filmmaking podcast Ck Café, producer Paul Zaentz, the nephew of the film’s original producer Saul Zaentz, disclosed: “Just now, I’ve signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the Chief for the first season. Following the first season, we’ll see what happens to the Chief after he escapes [from the psychiatric hospital].”

Kesey, author of the film’s source material, famously disavowed Milos Forman’s 1975 classic, in part because it diverged from his novel, which was told from the point of view of Chief Bromden, aka the ‘Chief’ (memorably played in the film by Will Sampson).

It’s not clear at this stage who,...

Apple Tv’s Attempt to Revive a 39-Year-Old, $25M Harrison Ford Bomb Ended as a Two-Season Disaster
Image
Apple TV+’s The Mosquito Coast drama series premiered with seven episodes in 2021 starring Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish, and more. Neil Cross developed the show loosely based on the novel of the same name by Paul Theroux, which was published in 1981. The story follows an inventor who uproots his family on a dangerous quest to find refuge from the U.S. government, hitmen, and cartels.

Upon release, The Mosquito Coast, critics believed that even though the show was visually very impressive, it lacked direction in terms of narrating the stories of the characters in the show. It failed to impress the audience and critics. The show has a very unique connection to Harrison Ford.

Image
Was Leonardo DiCaprio not the first choice for Jack in Titanic?(Photo Credit –Facebook)

James Cameron’s epic disaster film Titanic was released in 1997, and the film became the highest-grossing movie then. Until now, only three films, namely ‘Avatar’, ‘Avengers: Endgame’, and ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, are ahead of Titanic in terms of the global box office figures.

Before Leonardo DiCaprio was finally cast in the lead role of Jack, James Cameron’s first choice was another young and talented actor. Any wild guesses? Read on to know the actor’s name.

James Cameron Wanted This Actor To Play Jack Dawson in Titanic

As per a report by Cinema Blend, Titanic director James Cameron wanted to cast River Phoenix for the coveted role. Unfortunately, the casting could not happen because of the actor’s sudden death when he was just 23 years old. This happened before James Cameron could even...

How Liam Neeson Saved 'A Walk Among the Tombstones'
Image
As much as actor Harrison Ford has cemented his career playing fantastical protagonists — Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Dr. Richard Kimble (to a lesser extent) — the man is no stranger to stepping into the shoes of darker and grittier characters. There is 1986’s The Mosquito Coast and 2000’s What Lies Beneath, which both have him play someone evolving into a twisted and evil person by the movie’s end. More prominently though, 1982’s Blade Runner saw him play a cold and detached police officer who kills androids because of an ignorant social bias. If Ford has already proven that he could play anywhere on the character trait chart, why did he surprisingly bow out of playing private detective Scudder in 2014’s A Walk Among the Tombstones?

In an interview with Daniel Robert Epstein (writing for The Suicide Girls), Scott Frank (the director of the aforementioned movie) says that the Star Wars actor “chickened out.

Harrison Ford
Wtf Happened to Harrison Ford?
Harrison Ford
It’s not hard to argue that – among Hollywood icons – Harrison Ford sits pretty close to the top of the list. First blasting onto the scene as the coolest sci-fi character of all time, Han Solo, in Star Wars, throughout his career, no actor has ever been as good at inhabiting larger-than-life characters. If he’d only played Han, his place in the pantheon of actors would be guaranteed, but in the middle of his run, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg also hired him to play Indiana Jones (as a last-minute replacement for Tom Selleck), giving him another iconic character under his belt, who – perhaps – is an even bigger pop culture icon than Han.

Throughout the eighties and nineties no one had a better run than Ford, with him alternating acclaimed dramas like Witness, The Mosquito Coast, Presumed Innocent, and more with his blockbuster fare. In 1992, he was tapped to...

Harrison Ford’s 'The Mosquito Coast' Features One of His Favorite Roles
Image
Quick Links Paradise Turns Into Hell in 'The Mosquito Coast' 'The Mosquito Coast' Is One of Harrison Ford's Biggest Box-Office Failures Allie Fox Remains Ford's Favorite Role

Harrison Ford received his first and only Academy Award nomination for his captivating performance as police detective John Book in the 1985 crime thriller film Witness. Following the success of Witness, the actor was anxious to reunite with Witness director Peter Weir on another project that would again provide Ford with the opportunity to play against type. The result was the 1986 drama film The Mosquito Coast, in which Ford plays Allie Fox, a disillusioned and idealist inventor who leaves the United States with his wife and children and moves to the jungles of Central America, where Allie intends to build a utopian civilization, only to preside over a dystopian nightmare.

The Mosquito Coast becomes a compelling and disturbing...

New Trailer for 4K Restoration of Peter Weir's 'Picnic at Hanging Rock'
Image
"Everything begins and ends at exactly the right time and place." Janus Films has unveiled a new official trailer for the new 4K restoration & re-release of Picnic at Hanging Rock, an acclaimed Australian film from 1975. It was the third feature film at the time from director Peter Weir - way before he would go on to make The Last Wave, Gallipoli, The Mosquito Coast, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, Master and Commander, The Way Back and other films. It was a part of the Australian New Wave cinema movement at the time. Starring Rachel Roberts, Dominic Guard, Helen Morse, Vivean Gray, and Jacki Weaver. The plot involves the disappearance of several schoolgirls and their teacher during a picnic at Hanging Rock, Victoria on Valentine's Day in 1900, and the subsequent effect on the local community. Roger Ebert was also a big fan of this, calling it "a film of haunting...

The Sci-Fi Flop Harrison Ford Didn't Understand (But Starred In Anyway)
Image
Actor Harrison Ford has been pretty picky about his roles over the years, carefully choosing roles that suit his cocky charm, but he hasn't always made perfect choices. While the actor has dozens of truly great movies under his belt, he also has a few stinkers, like historical submarine thriller "K-19: The Widowmaker" and utopia-building drama "The Mosquito Coast," though Ford has rather thoroughly defended both. There's one box office bomb that he hasn't been as effusive about, however, in large part because he was admittedly never on the film's wavelength.

The 2011 sci-fi action western "Cowboys & Aliens" had all of the ingredients for major blockbuster box office success. Based on Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 Platinum Studios graphic novel of the same name, "Cowboys & Aliens" was directed by Jon Favreau, fresh off the success of the first two "Iron Man" films. It starred Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde,...

‘Picnic At Hanging Rock’ Trailer: Peter Weir’s Enigmatic Classic Returns To Theaters With New 4K Restoration
Image
Australian master filmmaker Peter Weir might be retired, sadly, but he amazing and eclectic work always lives on. Weir has so many great works under his belt, the sea-faring “Master & Commander,” the epic “Gallipoli,” thrillers like “The Mosquito Coast” and “Witness” with Harrison Ford and then perhaps more mainstream works like “The Truman Show” and “Dead Poets Society.” But his earlier pre-Hollywood work is arguably still his best, often very mysterious, enigmatic, eerie and mesmerizing.

Harrison Ford Can Cry With You in Your Sorrow and Also Turn Into a Hero in Dire Situation- Helen Mirren Explains Why She Loves Her 1923 Co-star
Image
They say a true legend doesn’t just walk into a room—they own it. And when Harrison Ford strolls in, it’s not just about the iconic roles or the thousands of fans clamoring for an autograph. No, it’s about the raw, unfiltered humanity that pours out of him, like an old friend you’ve known forever. He’s the kind of guy who can shed a tear for your loss and still find a way to save the day if the situation calls for it.

Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford in 1923 | Credits: Paramount Network

Naturally, it’s no wonder that his 1923 co-star Helen Mirren is head over heels for him—both on-screen and off. And let’s be real: who wouldn’t be? When she was asked what Mirren loved most about the man who made Indiana Jones synonymous with cracking whips and impossibly good-looking archaeologists, she didn’t hesitate.

Harrison Ford Turned Down Cape Fear Because He Couldn't Get The Role He Wanted
Image
It's often repeated that Harrison Ford hates "Star Wars" and Han Solo, the movie and role that made him a star. Ford himself leans into this, such as when he destroyed a Han Solo action figure on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."

Even while first filming the original 1977 "Star Wars," Ford wasn't the biggest fan of George Lucas' script: He memorably exclaimed "George! You can type this s***, but you sure can't say it!" Granted, it seems less that Ford despises "Star Wars" and more that he's just unsentimental about it. For him, playing Han Solo was just a successful gig, nothing more, and he's frustrated by the superfans who insist on always beating the dead tauntaun.

That unsentimental approach showed itself in his comments about being in "Star Wars" to Vanity Fair: "'Star Wars' was a big success, so I was happy to come back and play Han Solo again,...

Harrison Ford Says Avoiding Marvel Roles Is ‘Silly’ When MCU Films Provide ‘Good Experiences for an Audience,’ Calls the Death of Movie Stars ‘Rubbish’
Image
Harrison Ford is no stranger to blockbuster Hollywood franchises, having played Han Solo and Indiana Jones across decades. And now, the 82-year-old actor is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross / Red Hulk in next year’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” Speaking to GQ magazine, Ford said it would be “silly” to avoid Marvel when it’s something moviegoers have clearly responded to for years now.

“I mean, this is the Marvel universe and I’m just there on a weekend pass. I’m a sailor new to this town,” Ford said about his MCU debut. “I understand the appeal of other kinds of films besides the kind we made in the ’80s and ’90s. I don’t have anything general to say about it. It’s the condition our condition is in, and things change and morph and go on. We’re silly if we sit...

Exclusive: Out at the Cannes market, LA-based production company Convergence Entertainment Group is launching There There, which is being written and directed by the Polish brothers in their first collaboration in more than a decade.

Goosebumps Producer Shares Hopes for a Second Season
Image
Goosebumps producers hope for many more seasons and episodes to come, as they have a wealth of material from the book series to explore. The show's cast, made up of relatively unknown young adult actors, has great chemistry and natural dynamics that the producers want to continue to follow. By featuring high schoolers instead of younger kids, the series appeals to older teens and introduces higher stakes in the stories, aiming to elevate the horror.

While Goosebumps just landed on Disney+ and Hulu on October 13, there are already hopes for a second season - at least if you ask the shows' producers. The horror comedy series, starring Justin Long, is based on the popular 1990s kids horror book series (of the same name) by R.L. Stine, which usually found tweens and younger teens in frightful situations. Novels in the series all followed different stories, but the new show focuses on...

Suspicion: Uma Thurman Drama Canceled at Apple TV+
Uma Thurman
No news is good news... until it's bad news.

Apple TV+ has canceled its Uma Thurman drama series Suspicion after a single season.

Deadline first reported the news a year and a half after its freshman finale.

"When the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Thurman) is kidnapped from a New York hotel, the eye of suspicion quickly falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question," the logline teased.

"As they find themselves in a trans-Atlantic cat and mouse race to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the F.B.I. to prove their innocence, it becomes apparent that not everyone can be trusted."

"Who is really behind the mysterious abduction, and who is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?"

In addition to Thurman, the ensemble cast for Suspicion includes Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory...

Unlike Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, which seem to overwhelm the viewer with a constant influx of new content that inevitably gets shuffled into a streaming library, Apple TV+ has focused on bringing a few key shows to life that feature big names. There have been as many major successes as there have been massive disappointments, but strangely, it seemed like a major crime series starring Chris Evans and Michelle Dockery was overlooked entirely. It’s a shame, as Defending Jacob was a gripping miniseries that deserved acclaim for the insight it gave on some of the most grueling questions that any parent (or lawyer) could be asked.

Harrison Ford's Wild Roles Before Han Solo and Indiana Jones
Image
It’s hard to think of a time when Harrison Ford wasn’t one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Although certain actors fade in popularity over the years, Ford’s stardom never seems to wane, due to the sheer amount of all-time classics that he appeared in during his golden years. In the wake of Star Wars: Episode VI A New Hope, every subsequent film Ford appeared in between the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1990s is now considered to be a classic, including Apocalypse Now, Star Wars: Episode V- The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Star Wars: Episode VI- Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Witness, The Mosquito Coast, Frantic, Working Girl, and Presumed Innocent. However, there was a time before that when Ford was just another working actor, and his work...

High Desert (2023)
High Desert Canceled at Apple TV+
High Desert (2023)
Well, this is sad TV news on this fine holiday weekend.

Apple TV+ has canceled High Desert following the conclusion of its freshman season, according to Patrica Arquette.

"A lot of you have asked about High Desert and if there was going to be a second season," the actress said in an Instagram video on Saturday.

"So I just wanted to let you know, we just found out that it won't be coming back," she added.

"So that's a sad bummer for all of us."

She thanked the crew, writers, actors and fans. "You can't win 'em all," she added.

Ben Stiller, who served as an executive producer on the series, also addressed the cancellation.

"We are all disappointed," he wrote.

"Our entire #HighDesert cast was amazing and to all our fans, thank you for embracing this show."

"I Love Patricia Arquette, who gave an awards worthy performance," he continued.

“I Don’t Know What It Is, But It’s Cool”: 1923’s Helen Mirren Explains Her Magical Dynamic With Harrison Ford
Image
1923's Helen Mirren explains her magical dynamic with co-star Harrison Ford. The two acting legends lead the hit Yellowstone spinoff 1923, respectively playing Cara and Jacob Dutton. The series, which serves as a sequel to 1883, is bolstered by their presence and has become popular for Paramount+. The debut episode garnered 7.4 million viewers, in both linear and streaming, which made it Paramount+'s biggest debut ever. The spinoff was confirmed to return for more episodes to conclude the show, but 1923 season 2 has since been delayed indefinitely due to the ongoing writers' strike for fair wages.

As part of a Drama Roundtable with several other potential Emmy nominees for the Los Angeles Times, Mirren discussed working with Ford in 1923. The Oscar winner talked about working with Ford previously on another project and how they were able to pick up where they left off despite all the time that had passed. Read Mirren's...

‘Master Gardener’ Writer-Director Paul Schrader Still Packs a Punch
Image
With “Master Gardner,” writer-director Paul Schrader completes what has been dubbed his “Lonely Man” trilogy — but the man behind “American Gigolo” and “The Mosquito Coast” has returned to the same preoccupations and themes over his long career. The only thing that’s really changed is his approach to filmmaking.

“The last three films I’ve made in about 20 days each,” Schrader told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “I’m shooting more quote-unquote film — even though we don’t shoot film — I’m shooting more images and getting more images in the chip to, like we say, in the 20 days than I did in 40.”

Part of that leanness is attributed to Schrader’s understanding of what is and isn’t needed, even before arriving on set. His scripts are now a tight 70-80 pages, while in the early ’80s they tended to hover around 115. “When you’re working on a tight budget,...

Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon could have ‘Leftovers’ reunion at this year’s Emmys
Image
The HBO drama “The Leftovers” (2014 – 2017) created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta remains arguably one of the most Emmys-overlooked shows of all time. The series received only one Emmy nomination during its three-season run, and not even for the universally acclaimed lead performances by actors Justin Theroux or Carrie Coon. The duo might have had bad luck back then, but they’re both returning to overtake the Emmys this year in the Movie/Limited Series acting categories.

The acting was undoubtedly one of the strongest and most compelling assets of “The Leftovers.” The chief of police, Kevin Garvey, who goes on different levels of mental exploration, was Theroux’s first main TV protagonist role. Coon started off the series as a supporting character — grieving mother and wife Nora Durst — in season 1. She continued as the co-lead opposite Theroux until the end of the series. Despite their powerful presence on screen,...

‘Mosquito Coast’: A Gripping Family-On-The-Run Story Is A Prologue Akin To ‘Ozark’ & ‘Breaking Bad’ [Review]
Image
Much has been written about how the Prestige TV era often discards the episodic format of old to present seasons that play more like long movies with credit breaks every hour or so. Creator Neil Cross (“Luther”) clearly had this in mind while conceiving his take on “The Mosquito Coast.” Unfolding more like a 7-hour movie than a traditional season of television, this riff on the Paul Theroux novel, memorably adapted once in 1986 by Peter Weir, is a taut, gripping story of a family on the run that owes more to modern dramas like “Breaking Bad” and particularly “Ozark” than it does to its origins.

‘Mosquito Coast’ Trailer: AppleTV+ Revisits Peter Weir’s Drop-Out-Of-Society Drama In New Series Starring Justin Theroux
Image
A review of Peter Weir‘s classic 1980s drama, “The Mosquito Coast” starring Harrison Ford—about an American inventor exhausted by the perceived danger and degradation of modern society, who decides to escape with his wife and children to the jungles of South America to start over— on Letterboxed humorously describes the film as, about “a fine-ass Libertarian mad scientist who brings ice to Belize.” That’s a little reductive but does speak to the nature of how relevant “The Mosquito Coast” is today.

Emmy predictions slugfest: What can take down ‘The Crown’ for Best Drama Series? [Watch]
Image
“I will say, right now, with complete certainty, that ‘The Crown’ will win for the first time,” declares Rob Licuria. “Season four has been so acclaimed and has won everything across the board so far,” he says. Licuria joins fellow Gold Derby editor Riley Chow and contributors Charles Bright and Tony Ruiz for an early debate on who’s in and who’s out in this year’s drama races at the Emmys. Watch the video above.

See what shows won at the Golden Globes

“The Crown” just swept at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, winning Best Drama Series, Best Drama Actor and Actress (for Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin) and Best Drama Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson). The Netflix flagship drama is favored to win big at the SAG Awards next month as well. So it’s no surprise that it is the early Emmy frontrunner to...

After the PGA Awards, Do We Already Have Our Emmy Drama Series Winner?
Image
Watching the 2021 Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Wednesday night felt a lot like cultural deja vu. When you used to stumble downstairs in the middle of the night, unable to sleep, and settle on watching a movie on cable that you think you’ve seen before, but you can’t be certain. The plot points seem familiar and you can basically predict what’s going to happen from scene to scene, but you’re not sure if that’s because you’re remembering it or because whatever you’re watching reminds you of a dozen other movies you’ve seen like it. Regardless, you watch it through to the end, finally feel ready to get some sleep and by morning, you’ve largely forgotten about it.

Anyway, the big TV winners at the PGA awards included Netflix darlings “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” and if that is wholly unsurprising...

Helen Mirren Is Villain Hespera in Shazam 2: Fury of the Gods
Image
The cast of Shazam 2 now has an Oscar-winner among its ranks. Helen Mirren has officially joined the DC Comics adaptation. What's more, she will be playing a villain in the highly-anticipated sequel, which will once again be led by Zachary Levi as the comic book superhero. Asher Angel will also be back as the young Billy Batson, who transforms into Shazam.

According to multiple reports, Helen Mirren is set to play a villain named Hespera in Shazam 2, which is subtitled Fury of the Gods. The character is described as the daughter of Atlas. However, there is no specific character from the pages of DC Comics that corresponds to the name Hespera. So that is a mystery that will surely be unraveled in the coming months, or perhaps a surprise that will remain intact until the movie's release.

Much of the core cast from 2019's Shazam is expected to return as well.

Make your 1st Emmy predictions now for the 2021 Best Drama Series and acting categories
Image
The Gold Derby predictions center is now open to nomination predictions for the 2021 Emmy Awards. Fresh off its sweep at the Golden Globes, “The Crown” is the early frontrunner to win Best Drama Series for its fourth season, having been nominated its previous three. “Succession” beat it last year, but is currently taking an extended hiatus from the airwaves. “The Handmaid’s Tale” (Elisabeth Moss) is the only past Best Drama Series winner in contention, with its fourth season set to premiere April 28. The Emmys’ eligibility cycle spans roughly from June 2020 to June 2021.

“The Mandalorian” (Pedro Pascal) is the only other drama eligible to hold onto its nomination from last year, so there are five open slots, which was actually the case two years ago as well. Gone from this cycle are “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark” and “Stranger Things.” As cable and streaming shows have sat out certain years during extended hiatuses,...
