Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.
From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in July, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings feature a giant monster bug, home invaders, a zombie boy, a killer videographer, and a water spirit.
Blue Monkey (1987)
Directed by William Fruet.
As its name suggests, Pandemonium Day (July 14) is all about bedlam. And William Fruet’s Canadian tax-shelter movie Blue Monkey (a.k.a. Insect!) is as chaotic as they come. Originally called “Green Monkey” at one point, this movie’s final title is still a misnomer; there are no monkeys here. Instead, the characters battle a deadly parasite inside a quarantined hospital.

Three young robbers become victims of their own heist when they interrupt an AA-style meeting for recovering serial killers in Killer Party, a delightfully bloody horror from the producer of Sinister. Each of our would-be thieves have their reasons for attempting one last heist to ensure a better life, but not even the best of intentions will save them from the party’s killer line-up.
When three teenage thieves infiltrate a mansion dinner party they have plans for pulling off an easy and lucrative heist. Little do they know that the dinner party is actually hosted for a group of recovering serial killers that have gone ‘sober’ and fought to change the error of their ways. Once the mansion owners realise they are about to be robbed all hell breaks loose, this is no ordinary dinner party, this is a Killer Party.

Well that’s one way of ensuring Scream is MTV’s highest-rated show this summer. I won’t spoil the clever teaser trailer that the teen-skewing network just unveiled for its upcoming adaptation of the iconic slasher franchise, but let’s just say that MTV fans are going to get a kick out of what the creative team for the series, arriving this June, has come up with.
When a Scream show was first announced, I was one of those people pretty evenly divided between excitement at all the delicious meta commentary an update could bring and trepidation that it would end the same way as MTV’s Skins and Inbetweeners takes (e.g. not well at all, and best forgotten very, very quickly). Since then, though, MTV’s advertisements for the series have done a pretty surprising job of getting me on the show’s side – with its fresh-faced cast,...

When I was a kid my dad used to have tapes upon tapes of movies he had taped off TV, typically uncut and usually filled with all the “goodies” Case in point, Screwballs. Screwballs was recorded in LP format and came just after Caddyshack. While I’m not entirely sure how I was allowed to watch the uncut, non-television purified version of Caddyshack at as twelve, well I thank my lucky stars that dear old mum never figured it out. At the time I didn’t know that Roger Corman was in anyway associated with the picture. Figures. Giant, low budget monster movies and loosely based Edgar Allen Poe adaptations certainly give way to comedic representations of large ta ta’s pirouetting across the screen like sugar plum fairies on LSD. So for the boobs. For the sense of humor grown by repeated viewings of said film. For the VHS...

One of the challenges of writing a weekly article is picking the right subject. I didn't have much time to contemplate it this week and hadn't settled on one until Thursday evening. I knew I'd be out of luck if my choice didn't deliver, but after reading the back of the box, I figured I couldn't miss.
Damn you, Code Red.
It's not that Trapped (aka Baker County U.S.A. - a much better title) is a bad film, but Code Red's comparison to Wrong Turn is fallacious. Yes, this involves college kids in the woods. And that's about the best you can do with similarities. As such, this week's Saturday Nightmares is a bit light on the nightmares part, and I do apologize. But it was either write this up or skip a week - and I've skipped so many of them over the last two years that...

The Warner Archive Collection can make a wide array of films available because they don't actually create the DVD until it is ordered by a customer. This way, they are not taking a chance of getting stuck with a large amount of inventory if a selected title doesn't sell. You'll certainly recognize some of the horror films the Warner Archive Collection has added to its library, but there are a couple of really obscure ones in there as well. Take a look at the list of what's been made available and plan your shopping list now.

Welcome back to Junkfood Cinema; arson is only acceptable against houses that give out pennies on Halloween. We have emerged from our coffins yet again to bring you the dankest, dingiest, most malodorous horror films we can scrape from our blood-stained basements. We will cut into the flesh of these films with sharp lampoon and serrated mockery, spilling all of their faults onto the ground with a satisfying splash. But then we will take that hollow corpse, stuff it full of love and whatever legitimate praise we can muster, and raise it high upon a post in the middle of our cinematic cornfield to scare away even worse films. Then, as we all sit in a circle around it reciting our hymns to the great Cthulu, I will pass around a tray of snacks themed to the film to help ensure your gut grows to the size of The Great Pumpkin himself. Oh, Warner Archives. How much do we love thee? You specialize in doling out obscure classics that haven't seen the light of day in ages, and as a result you make us want to shrink ourselves to infant size so that we may roll around playfully on your naked bosom. Happy sigh!
Next up from their vaults? Two Eighties slashers that we've been dying to see again - Ken Hughes' 1981 bloodbath Night School and William Fruet's 1986 flick Killer Party.
Here are some quick synopses for those who don't remember or have never heard of these goodies via IMDb -
Night School

Some of you may have noticed over the past few months that Dread Central articles have periodically strayed from the horror genre. That was just a test run for the big news. Much of the Dread Central staff will soon be migrating over to our new website, Geek Terminal, a web portal covering movies, TV shows, comic books, video games, etc. News that's important to the internet fanboy community.
We’ve been holding this surprise under our hats for some time now, but today we can finally let the cat out of the bag. Dread Central co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Uncle Creepy asked me to pass along the following statement to explain:
“I write like 90 stories a week covering all the breaking news in the world of horror. God, I am so fucking burnt out on the genre. Don’t get me wrong. I still love everything horror. It’s just...

Almost one year ago, when we launched at Big Daddy, one of our first posts was about 10 horror films in need of a DVD or Blu-Ray release. The Nesting and Twice Dead which both made the list are now either out on DVD or about to be released. Other titles that made the list included The Pack, Night Warning, Massacre at Central High, Dance of the Damned, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Deadly Blessing, The Kindred and Killer Party. With this second annual edition, we hope to spotlight more horror films that have fallen through the cracks. Titles that haven't been released beyond VHS (with the exception of one, that has only been released to VOD) that need the attention of us horror fans and distributors to make these titles readily available for our horror movie watching enjoyment.

Code Red DVD just sent Fango the specs for a trio of upcoming releases set to hit retailers later this summer.
On August 18th, Code Red DVD will unleash The Strangeness. It is 1980 and the price of gold is soaring. Old timers warn would be prospectors to stay away from the Gold Spike Mine. It has stood as a ghastly reminder of the horrors of a century before when the earth violently shook and over twenty miners were killed, their bodies stripped of flesh. The residents of Basin City talked of the grisly murders only in whispers from which legends of The Strangeness grew. A small group of explorers innocently make their way to the Gold Spike. Only one knows the incredible secret of the mine, and here the nightmare begins.....!
Nightmare USA's Stephen Thrower described the film as having, "Ominous atmosphere, flashes of humour, and a truly startling monster!
