Crunchyroll has the world's biggest library of anime for fans to indulge in, and many of them can be watched without a paid subscription. The streaming service is perfect for watching ongoing series, since the newest episodes often arrive on the platform an hour after their Japanese premiere. In Spring 2022, Funimation merged with Crunchyroll, making its vast library even bigger.
It can be difficult to choose which anime to watch next since there are so many titles. Fortunately, Crunchyroll always adds new anime titles, whether they're classics or brand-new series from every anime genre. There's an anime out there for everyone, and more likely than not, new viewers can find it somewhere on Crunchyroll.
Updated on March 15th, 2025 by Chelsea Steele: Crunchyroll's library is the widest anime library available. Whether fans are looking for brand-new seasonal anime or classics, they can find just about anything they could ask for on Crunchyroll.

Nothing sparks nostalgia like classic anime, bringing back memories of simpler times. However, just because an anime is considered a classic doesn’t mean it holds up. Nostalgia can mask major flaws, making outdated writing, poor pacing, or clunky animation seem better than they actually were.
These anime may still hold a special place in fans' hearts, but a rewatch tells a different story. Many haven’t aged well, whether due to tired tropes, lackluster storytelling, or production issues. Looking back, it’s clear these so-called classics are nowhere near as good as fans remember.

2024 is coming to a close, and with it comes another great year for manga. Whether it was a manga that had been running since 2023 and beyond or ones that just premiered, there were plenty of great manga to read, and no matter what someone was into, there was always something for someone to get invested in.
Plenty of great manga ran throughout 2024, and naturally, some manga stood out more than others. Whether it was because of great artwork, stellar storytelling, or some combination of the two, the best manga of 2024 were the ones that had the best presentation either narratively or artistically, and that’s true of both ongoing manga and manga that only just started in 2024. A few manga, in particular, are especially worth highlighting, as each one will be a great read for old and new fans alike in 2025 and beyond.

Sword Art Online’s Popularity Proved to be a Double-Edged Sword and Became the Bane of its Existence
Sword Art Online is that one show Isekai fans wish it never existed and this is even considering some of the trashy ones that come out every season. In terms of general popularity, it started out quite well, with Season 1 ranking high on MyAnimeList compared to its sequels. The plot was engaging, the concept was new, the animation was pretty good and the set-up for Season 2 got many fans eagerly awaiting it.
The main cast from Sword Art Online Season 1 | Credits: Studio A-1 Pictures
However, the downfall of Sword Art Online was when it subverted people’s expectations but in a bad way. According to critics, the story deviated from the horrors of living in a game-like world to literally overpowering Kirito more than Guts from Berserk. Then it ended up becoming a Harem show where the focus was all about the main character and the girls falling for him.

Although isekai manga have had their share of ups and downs, the genre's also been responsible for some classic series over the years. Fans of the genre enjoy isekai because they offer interesting fantasy settings while remaining relatable through their grounded protagonists.
While several of the best isekai manga and anime get their start as light novels before being adapted into anime, some others actually started out as manga. Conversely, it's also a popular format to see adaptations of popular material retold through. Despite the reputation some of these isekai series have, many isekai manga are quality reads and are often better than their anime adaptations.

Fall 2024 is seeing the release of several fantastic new anime, with these ranging widely in terms of scope and genre. Many are adaptations of manga or light novels, with some also being sequel seasons to shows that have already begun. One series is already set to be this season's chief tearjerker, even if the title has some rather unfortunate implications.
Referred to by most fans as TsumaSho, Tsuma, Shgakusei ni Naru has a title that literally translates as "My Wife Will Become an Elementary School Student." Despite what the title seems to suggest, the show is nothing of the sort and is actually equal amounts of sweet and tragic. In fact, it deals with serious themes more than most mainstream anime do, making the potential controversy over its title all the more ironic.

Global anime streamer Crunchyroll is exploring the idea of shorter anime projects to suit the preferences of younger generations for short-form content, such as that seen on TikTok, according to a new interview.
Nikkei Xtrend interviewed Crunchyroll COO Gita Rebbapragada and President Rahul Purini about the latest trends concerning the anime industry. When the pair were asked how they believe anime will evolve in the future, Purini replied, "Most anime are 21-24 minutes long. Meanwhile, younger generations are used to watching short 2-4 minute videos one after the other (on TikTok etc.). We need to think about how to tell anime stories differently than we traditionally have done. The anime ecosystem itself needs to continue to evolve."

Pseudo Harem cleverly subverts harem stereotypes, creating a unique and heartwarming romance without typical plot pitfalls. Rin embodies different harem archetypes for Eiji's attention, leading to comical and endearing situations in their relationship. The anime focuses on Rin and Eiji's interactions, showing that quality relationships don't always need multiple romantic interests to develop.
Crunchyroll's sweetest romance this season is undoubtedly Pseudo Harem, thanks to its fun concept that adorably plays with a common trope of anime. Pseudo Harem's premise is exactly what it suggests: a story about a harem that isnt really one. This unique harem is follows Rin Nanakura, who, after joining her school drama club and meeting Eiji Kitahama, decides to use her acting skills to embody multiple harem archetypes to fulfill Eiji's wish to be popular.

Tenchi Universe blends space opera with sitcom tropes to produce a one of a kind viewing experience that's both nostalgic and forward-thinking at the same time. The show introduced Harem anime to Western audiences as part of Cartoon Network's "Toonami" programming block. Subsequent Tenchi Muyo! projects failed to gain traction with fans and recapture the perfect balance of Tenchi Universe.
In the Summer of 2000, Cartoon Network began airing a five-year-old anime import from Japan, Masaki Tajishima's Tenchi Universe, as part of their after-school "Toonami" programming block. Tenchi Universe took the same characters and setting from the shorter, story-focused OVAs that preceded it, added a few new players, and streamlined the complex lore, which resulted in a more well-rounded, but slower-paced show.
While Cartoon Network marketed the show as a simple, white-knuckle action-adventure anime, in many ways it was much more mature than that. Tenchi Universe is a coming-of-age story...

Many older shnen anime need reboots to improve adaptations and do justice to the original manga storylines. Some anime suffer from excessive filler and deserve reboots to have better pacing. Other anime would benefit from reboots to have better direction and more faithful storytelling.
Shonen anime, as with any medium, is no stranger to reboots. If a series is old enough, or if the original version is lacking in one way or another, a reboot is necessary to present the original work as best as possible. Anime like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Sailor Moon Crystal are classic examples of this, and even One Piece is being rebooted via The One Piece.
There have been plenty of great anime reboots over the years, but many anime that deserve one, especially shonen anime, still need one. Shonen anime have a history of falling short as adaptations due to the difficulties of having...

Harem is a popular anime genre, but lately, its popularity is experiencing a downward spiral. The audience is past the eye-roll-worthy tropes and the same story copy-pasted with a different title. Harem anime used to be a lighthearted, fun, and guilty pleasure watch. There are fewer and fewer harem shows every season that can capture the viewers’ attention. The Quintessential Quintuplets is a conventional harem anime series in many ways. The story follows protagonist Futaro Uesugi, an ordinary boy with excellent study skills, who must tutor the five beautiful Nakano sisters at their father's request. As usual, this means multiple girls will fall for the self-insert male lead, but The Quintessential Quintuplets flexed its storytelling muscles with a simple trick to refresh this familiar paradigm.
As the title would suggest, The Quintessential Quintuplets is less about the male lead, Futaro, and is really about the identical Nakano sisters and their sympathetic, shared quest to grow up. The Nakanos were once afraid that their terrible grades would hold them back, but with Futaro's help, the Nakanos will learn, grow, and face their fears in five distinct but intertwined character arcs.

A strong female lead is one of the most important aspects of a successful anime, especially rom-coms. Romance anime depend on a solid plot and commendable character development to counter the lack of action and thrill. However, romantic female protagonists were commonly reduced to dull love interests with zero charm and character. Luckily, the anime industry has caught on to the fact that a successful romance anime needs an anime girl who can steal the spotlight.
Recent popular romance anime like Tomo-chan Is A Girl!, Romantic Killer, My Dress-Up Darling, More Than A Married Couple, and more have portrayed phenomenal female leads who wowed the audience immediately. Israel’s Antitrust Authority has approved a merger of TV broadcasters Reshet and Channel Ten.
The two companies announced their intention to join forces back in June, but had to await the ruling of the government authority, which granted the request Wednesday on one condition. Before the deal can be completed, Reshet must sell its stake in “The News Company,” formerly known as Channel 2 News.
Until last November, Reshet and Keshet shared airing rights on Israel’s Channel 2, the oldest and largest commercial broadcast station in the country. But in the wake of legislation aimed at boosting competition in the TV market, the broadcasters were forced to split into two separate channels last year.
Reshet has suffered in ratings and revenue since the split. Channel Ten, Israel’s only other commercial network, has also been struggling, and the two viewed a merger as the only way to stay afloat.

Lilles, France — In a keynote conversation given by Endemol Shine president Sohpie Turner Laing at Lille’s Series Mania, it was announced that Israeli broadcaster Reshet has commissioned a second season of the hit series “Harem,” to broadcast on Reshet 13.
“Harem” featured at this year’s festival as part of the International Panorama, where Laing announced the renewal. She then explained where the series fits in the company’s big picture outlook.
“We are about supporting our creative visionaries [allowing them] to do the best work they can do around the world. The benefit of being such a strong group is that we are able to make things happen really quickly.”
She went on: “It’s working with the local heads in every country to work out what’s in their development slate, and what stories are going to resonate with audience. Our group is about how we travel shows from one country to another.
