These days, "Jurassic Park" is a massive media franchise with several theatrical films and even more to come. In addition to the movies and Michael Crichton's original novels, there have been numerous video games and a popular Netflix animated series, "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous." What you may not know is that "Camp Cretaceous" wasn't the first time someone tried to turn "Jurassic Park" into a small-screen cartoon. In fact, a much earlier attempt was made in the 1990s right around the time the first "Jurassic Park" movie hit theaters (though it never made it into full production).
For many years, details about this project were kept secret. However, old pitch decks, story treatments, and concept art have leaked out bit by bit, published by outlets like Jurassic Outpost. The show, which had a working title of "Escape from Jurassic Park," was ambitious to say the least, and it's not...

If you grew up in the early 2000s, chances are you spent many evenings with Ray Barone (Ray Romano) and his eccentric family in the hit comedy series "Everybody Loves Raymond." For good reason. This critically acclaimed sitcom about Ray, a Newsday sportswriter, dealing with his put-upon wife Debra (Patricia Heaton), bickering parents (Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts), and neurotic brother Robert (Brad Garrett), perfectly captures the working-class family and all its quirks, resulting in a heartfelt, often hilarious look at everyday life.
Running from 1997 to 2005, "Raymond" won 15 Primetime Emmys, garnered critical acclaim, and averaged over 20 million viewers during its peak. More impressively, the cast became household names, forever tied to their characters. Still, while many cast members achieved even greater success following the show's finale, others faded into obscurity or endured heartbreaking tragedy. Interested to learn more? Although few theatrical franchises receive animated TV spinoffs like Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, and Ghostbusters did, this '80s trend predicted major change in 2020s Hollywood. While the blockbuster may have been born in the ‘70s with hits like Jaws, Star Wars, and Alien, the ‘80s was where the movie franchise truly flourished. The aforementioned hits all received sequels that expanded their fictional worlds and earned staggering sums at the box office, but the decade was also home to a slew of huge franchises that continue to this day. These include the Ghostbusters movies, the Gremlins series, and the Back to the Future franchise.

The world of Ghostbusters continues to expand, but now with an animated movie, and this new project can be the spiritual successor to one of the best animated shows of the 1980s. Back in 1984, the world met a group of parapsychologists investigating and eliminating ghosts in New York City in the supernatural comedy Ghostbusters. Directed by Ivan Reitman and created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, Ghostbusters followed the title team, formed by Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Aykroyd), Spengler (Ramis), and Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), on their ghost-hunting adventures.
The huge success of Ghostbusters made way for a franchise with a direct sequel, a failed reboot in 2016, and a second reboot with two movies, along with two animated TV shows, video games, and lots of merch. While a third movie in the current reboot timeline is in development, the Ghostbusters franchise is now also preparing another movie, but this one will be animated.

A new animated Ghostbusters movie is in the works at Netflix. The franchise expanded earlier in 2024 with the theatrical release of the live-action Ghosbusters: Frozen Empire, which saw Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson reprising their roles from the original film. A Netflix Ghostbusters show is already in development at Netflix and is separate from the animated film project. Elliot Kalan is the showrunner of the developing animated series, while Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are executive producers.
Deadline has now confirmed Sony Animation and Netflix are working on a Ghostbusters animated movie, with Kris Pearn attached to direct. Pearn previously directed Sony's Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 and the Netflix animated movie The Willoughbys, the latter of which has an impressive 92% Tomatometer score. Netflix's animated Ghostbusters movie is still in the early stages of development and plot details are being kept under wraps.

The Real Ghostbusters had some of the coolest ghost designs out of any piece of Ghostbusters media, from familiar faces to recurring bad guys from the movies. As great as the Ghostbusters movies are, the animated series The Real Ghostbusters is, in all honesty, probably the second-best thing to come out of the franchise outside of the first film. Part of what made The Real Ghostbusters so special was its terrifying cast of spectral ghouls and ghosts that served as the monsters-of-the-week.
Compared to the villains of the Ghostbusters movies, The Real Ghostbusters' rogues' galleries had a lot more creative freedom thanks to the series' animation. The scares had to be kept somewhat tame due to the family-friendly nature of the show, but the 80s cartoon managed to get away with some surprisingly intense imagery for a Saturday morning kids' series. As a result, The Real Ghostbusters is littered with...

Ghostbusters nostalgia seemingly has no end. In addition to the recent live-action legacy sequels Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, there's been a surge of nostalgia for The Real Ghostbusters. The classic '80s animated series – which would've been called Ghostbusters if not for a totally unrelated animated series that tried to capitalize on brand recognition – is back in toy form, with a new line of Funko Pop collectibles.
Funko Pop vinyl figures based on The Real Ghostbusters animated series are available for pre-order right now. Funko released the first in-package shots of Peter, Ray, Egon, Winston, and their ghostly companion, Slimer. The 3.75" cult TV characters come complete in their jumpsuits with Proton Packs in-hand as well as attachable color-coordinated proton streams. Venkman is even accompanied by a little 1.5" Slimer. As a detour from the typical purplish-blue cardboard, the packaging features slime, retro caution striping, and the Real Ghostbusters logo.

Peter Venkman comes with Slimer, Ray Stantz looks genuinely scared, Winston Zeddemore is decked in his blue suit, and Egon Spengler – who had the biggest makeover from movie to series – has his blonde top and red glasses. Even cooler, each of the guys comes with an “in-use” proton pack that will give your display more action.

Ernie Hudson has played many roles, but one stands out the most: the one of Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters franchise. The actor played the character in all the films but didn't voice him in any of the two animated series.
Speaking to Brittany Frederick of Cbr to promote his new project, Angry Birds: Mystery Island, Hudson also addressed one of his most recognizable roles: Winston. The actor, who voices Marlon in the new animated series' Episode 4, "A-squawk-alypse Now," noted he would love to do more voice work in the future. That also applies to his Ghostbusters character, whom he played in all four films, but not the animated series, and he would like the chance in the future.

Ernie Hudson is known worldwide for his movie and TV roles, but most fans don't know that he's also a fantastic voice actor. Angry Birds: Mystery Island features Hudson in the scene-stealing role of Marlon, who surprises the main characters with his giant personality. And while it's just the latest of many voice acting roles the Ghostbusters star has had over his career, Hudson spoke to Cbr about how he's long wanted to spend more time in the animated space.
In this interview, Hudson talked about portraying Marlon in Angry Birds: Mystery Island Season 1, Episode 4, "A-squawk-alypse Now," and why the role was so much fun for him. He also looked back on his previous voice acting parts -- and the ones he didn't get, like not voicing Winston Zeddemore in animated follow-ups The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters. Find out why voice acting is a passion for one of the most beloved actors working today.

The Ghostbusters franchise may be moving forward, but one of its original stars says he and another iconic character will likely not return to the big screen. Per The New York Post, Dan Aykroyd, who has portrayed Raymond Stantz in the Ghostbusters franchise since the original 1984 movie, said he and fellow Ghostbuster Bill Murray would probably be sitting out any future films.
I dont see that coming, Aykroyd said after being asked if he and Murray, who played Peter Venkman in the films, would return. I dont see where they would need us to carry it on. Theyve got a whole new cast, and theyve got whole new ideas."

Sci-fi and fantasy movies often challenge viewers to imagine infinite possibilities, but many forget just how many cartoon spinoffs exist in their wake. These adaptations often expand the lore, brand, and relevance of their cinematic counterparts, sometimes offering deeper explorations of worlds only briefly touched on in the source material. While shows like The Real Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous have found enduring popularity, they represent just a fraction of the sci-fi and fantasy cartoons that haven't enjoyed the same success.
Cinema has long captivated children with its fantastic worlds, and over the years, it became increasingly common for movies to spin off into animated TV series. Early examples like King Kong, Planet of the Apes, and Fantastic Voyage often served as gateways for younger audiences to explore these larger-than-life stories. Today, that tradition continues with titles like Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Gremlins: The Wild Batch, and an upcoming Ghostbusters project.

Peter Renaday, a longtime and prolific voice actor best known as the voice of rat sensei Master Splinter in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series, died Sunday, September 8, at his home in Burbank, California. He was 89.
News of his death was shared on social media by friend and Turtles costar Townsend Coleman, who voiced the character of Michaelangelo on the immensely popular generational touchstone animated series of the 1980s-’90s.
A cause of death has not been determined, but TMZ cites law enforcement sources as having discovered an unresponsive Renaday during a welfare check at his home on Sunday. Natural causes are suspected.
“Pete was one of the most genuine, salt of the earth people I have ever known and I will miss him dearly,” Coleman wrote on social media (see the post below). “I had the privilege of visiting with him a month ago and he was as vibrant as ever,...

Halloween Horror Nights is back, and guests are asked who they’re gonna call as some familiar ghosts and a whole lot of Mini-Pufts invade the Orlando amusement park.
The Ghostbusters franchise has had a rough go of it. The original film is a bona fide masterpiece and the direct sequel featured a fantastic villain and some of the series’ most fun moments; however, that lightning in a bottle event that audiences experienced in 1984 has yet to be regained on the big screen. Fans can still experience the highs and lows of the franchise at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights, featuring a haunted house dedicated to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and an onslaught of those adorably mischievous Mini-Pufts.

Tim Burton's 1988 classic "Beetlejuice" is a delightful supernatural comedy about a lovable and recently-deceased couple trying (and constantly failing) to scare a very much living family of off-putting city folks from their home — all before the titular bio-exorcist comes in to wreak havoc. Now, after what seems like a lifetime of waiting, Tim Burton is back with a sequel that has become much personal to him in recent years.
That sequel, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" seems to grab inspiration from another, oft-forgotten "Beetlejuice" title — the animated series of the same name, which aired from 1989 to 1991 on ABC. Burton created the show alongside David Geffen (the producer who went on to co-create DreamWorks) and the animation production company behind "Ewoks" and "The Magic School Bus," among others. In the show, Beetlejuice is best friends with Lydia and they go on spoopy adventures, many of which parody popular films and TV shows. The...

Who is Netflix going to call? Ghostbusters! After the latest film in the franchise became a huge streaming hit on the platform, Netflix has officially given the green light to an upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, as Variety reports.
The new animated series in the expansive film and television franchise has been in the works since 2022, when word of its development was first announced. Likely, the success of the two latest movies, Afterlife and Frozen Empire, tipped the series over the edge.
Netflix's as of yet untitled animated series becomes the the third animated Ghostbusters series following 1986's The Real Ghostbusters and 1997's Extreme Ghostbusters. The former produced 140 episodes while the latter produced just 40. Netflix hasn't revealed an episode count for season 1.
While the show has become official, exact details on its plot haven't been revealed either. According to Variety, the tone of the series will mirror that of Afterlife and Frozen Empire,...

Netflix announced a Ghostbusters animated series back in 2022, but the development of the series has been quiet until now. 1984's Ghostbusters became such a hit with children around the world that before a sequel arrived in 1989, the franchise spun off into a popular animated series titled The Real Ghostbusters, which ran for seven seasons. A follow-up, Extreme Ghostbusters, aired in 1997 for one season. For nearly three decades, there have been attempts to get a new Ghostbusters series off the ground, but with little success.
According to Variety, Netflix has finally given the green light to a new 3D-animated Ghostbusters series. Elliot Kalan, who previously worked with Netflix as the head writer on their revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000, as well as being a writer on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, will serve as the series writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Originally announced two years ago, a brand new “Ghostbusters” animated series has been officially given the green light over at Netflix this week, Variety reports tonight.
The website notes in their report tonight, “In addition, Variety has learned that Elliott Kalan has boarded the project as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.”
Elliot Kalan served as the head writer for Netflix’s version of the classic series “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” and he was also formerly a writer for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”
“Exact plot details are still under wraps, but sources say the 3D animated series will be tonally in line with the recent Ghostbusters films,” Variety also previews.
Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) will produce for Sony Pictures Animation.
The Ghostbusters franchise has of course made a mark on the world of animation in the past, with “The Real Ghostbusters” in the 1980s and “Extreme Ghostbusters” in the 1990s.

Netflix's release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire may breathe new life into the sequel, allowing fans to enjoy the chilling world from home. The franchise's legendary cast and mix of horror, sci-fi, and comedy have drawn in generations of fans, leading to continued success. Despite underwhelming box office earnings, pairing the movie with a lighthearted animated series on Netflix could spark new interest in the series.
The fifth installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, is being released on Netflix, giving viewers another chance to dive into the chilling world of the Ghostbusters once more. Despite its mediocre release, the wider availability might breathe new life into the sluggish sequel. Fans who missed seeing the film in theaters can now enjoy it from the comfort of their own homes, hopefully leading to a more enthusiastic reception. There are many movies out there that you don't actually have to watch to feel as if you have seen them. Movies that, good or bad, are so ingrained in pop culture, such a big part of the zeitgeist, that you end up learning all there is to know about them from references on TV shows or in conversations with friends. These are usually entries in larger franchises, such as Star Wars or The Avengers, but not always. Solo acts like Titanic and Gone with the Wind, for instance, can also be counted among such examples. For me, Ivan Reitman's 1984 Ghostbusters was always one of those films. Despite having never seen a single scene of the actual 80s classic, I had a pretty good idea of what it was about. I have disjointed memories of the Saturday morning cartoon, The Real Ghostbusters, as well as of Season 2 of Stranger Things.

Recent reports suggest Capcom is preparing to remake more Resident Evil games. It’s hardly a surprising report given both the quality of those recent remakes and the cultural power of the Resident Evil franchise. However, it is a reminder that Resident Evil has historically achieved a level of success that has eluded pretty much every other horror game franchise. The genre has long lived in the wake of Resident Evil, and it’s been that way since the ’90s when the first Resident Evil made such a seismic impact that much of what followed was called a clone.
Because of that, some of the earliest and most fascinating horror games have largely been ignored or otherwise forgotten about. They may not have come anywhere close to replicating Resident Evil‘s success, but if you ask me, these forgotten ’90s horror games are more deserving of a remake than any...

Naugus, not Knuckles, was supposedly meant to be the mysterious eyes at the end of the Sonic cartoon finale. The show was canceled after two seasons, leaving fans with a cliffhanger ending. The eyes were actually meant to belong to Knuckles, but plans would have changed if there was a third season.

Forty years later, it’s safe to say Sony and one of its most beloved film titles still ain’t ‘fraid of no ghost. They also apparently need not fear curmudgeonly film reviews either based on the solid performance of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire over last weekend’s box office.
Despite receiving a tepid Rotten Tomatoes aggregate score of 44 percent, the fourth or fifth film in the franchise—depending how you count Paul Feig’s 2016 remake of the same name—opened above expectations with an estimated $45 million in three days. That is nearly identical to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which opened at $44 million, and the aforementioned 2016 remake, which grossed $46 million in its debut. Given such similarities, it’s probably worth noting that one reason the 2016 reboot was perceived as a financial disappointment and Afterlife was not is because the former cost a reported $145 million while Afterlife’s price tag was about half that.

The original live-action Ghost Busters featured a bumbling trio of detectives fighting paranormal creatures with a ghost de-materializer. The 1986 animated version, Ghostbusters, was a sequel with new characters battling a ghost wizard named Prime Evil. Filmation's Ghostbusters faced challenges against Columbia Pictures' version, leading to quick cancellation and regrets from the executive producer.

It's official: "Ghostbusters" is now a $1 billion franchise. Just shy of 40 years after the classic horror/comedy originally arrived in theaters back in 1984, the films have hit a major milestone at the box office thanks to the latest entry, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Thanks to the new film's opening weekend haul, the series has now ascended the ranks to become one of the relatively few franchises in cinema history that can claim to have made ten figures or more in ticket sales.
Director Gil Kenan's "Frozen Empire" opened to $45 million over the weekend domestically, putting it on top of the charts in its debut. The Sony Pictures release also pulled in $16 million internationally, giving the film a $61 million start to its theatrical run. Looking at the bigger picture, that was enough to push the franchise past the $1 billion mark. The films have collectively grossed $1.005 billion through the years across four decades and five films.

You probably already know what will be number one on this list. The “Ghostbusters” franchise has gone through its ups and downs, reboots and legacyquels. But as the first film approaches its 40th anniversary this June, there’s little doubt in anybody’s mind that it remains the definitive ghost-catching movie of them all.
In the early ’80s, Dan Aykroyd — then just fresh off his stint as an original “Saturday Night Live” cast member — was inspired by his own belief in the supernatural to write a script about a group of eccentric academics who start a pest-control business where the “pests” they’re catching are malevolent spirits. Recruiting former “SNL” castmate Bill Murray to star, comedian Harold Ramis to help rewrite the screenplay, and “Meatballs” and “Stripes” filmmaker Ivan Reitman to direct. The final film, which hit theaters in 1984, starred Aykroyd, Murray, Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as the four Ghostbusters,...
