Four of this year’s Best Picture nominees are remakes. For “West Side Story,” “Dune,” and “Nightmare Alley,” that meant risky comparisons. For “Coda,” it’s like it never happened.
It’s no secret that “Coda” is an adaptation, but you’ve likely never seen “La Famille Bélier,” the 2014 French film on which “Coda” is based. A massive hit in France, it grossed $55 million — the per-capita equivalent to over $300 million domestic. Worldwide, it grossed $86 million.
And yet there is little evidence that the film ever had any public showings in the United States. In Canada, it screened only in French-speaking regions. (DVDs with English subtitles can be ordered online.)
France is a reliable resource for American remakes, like United Artists’ “The Birdcage” (“La Cage Aux Folles”), STX Entertainment’s “The Upside” (“Intouchables”), and “Three Men and a Baby” (“Trois Hommes et un Couffin”). “Intouchables” was released all over the world.

The Three Men and a Baby remake is officially happening at Disney+ in 2022. Zac Efron is attached to star. Not too many details are available, but it is believed that the reboot will be a modern take on the 1987 comedy, which starred Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson as three bachelors who suddenly have to take care of a baby. No other cast members have been announced, but that information will likely be available in the coming months.

We can't stop watching the addictive new Netflix series Emily in Paris, which combines all our Francophile dreams with gorgeous, super-chic fashion, pain au chocolat, ambition, and very cute guys (hi Antoine and Gabriel!). Apart from protagonist Emily - who dons looks like short plaid jackets and chic monochrome outfits, and is delightfully neurotic with everything from work to love - there's another character whose fashion sense and big attitude are next-level. Parisian boss Sylvie is fashion-forward but classic in her style, and a total Miranda Priestly when it comes to her behavior as marketing firm director. Sylvie is played by Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu in a way that is believable, hilarious, wince-inducing, and very, very French.
Who is Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu?
Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu is a French actress who was born in 1963 in Rome, and she is the daughter of French film star Philippe Leroy, who is known for his extensive work in Italian cinema.

Disney is moving forward with a Three Men and a Baby remake based on the 1980s classic comedy. What's more, they've tapped Zac Efron to star in the lead role. This comes as the studio is looking to beef up its streaming offerings in an aim to compete with Netflix in the direct-to-consumer marketplace. As such, this is being developed for the Disney+ streaming service and not as a theatrical release.
According to a new report, Zac Efron has boarded the project. It has not been revealed who, precisely, Efron will be playing. Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson headlined the original. No director has been set yet, but Gordon Gray, who most recently worked on Ben Affleck's The Way Back, is on board to produce. Will Reichel (Hot Air) penned the screenplay for the remake. No details have been revealed in regards to how Reichel updated the story.

The original “Three Men and a Baby” starred Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson as bachelors living a carefree lifestyle and sharing an apartment in New York City. The trio is forced to adjust to parenthood as an infant girl fathered by Danson’s character arrives at their doorstep.
That script, written by Jim Cruickshank and James Orr, was based on the 1985 French film “Trois hommes et un couffin” (“Three Men and a Cradle”). “Three Men and a Baby,” directed by Leonard Nimoy, was a massive success with $240 million in worldwide box office on an $11 million budget.

The Swedish film “Force Majeure” was a critically acclaimed darling but not exactly a box office hit. So there was an opportunity to take the film’s black humor and install the American charms of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell to see how it might fare commercially in “Downhill,” opening this weekend. But surprisingly, even box office hits abroad don’t always translate when remade with American actors, and the ones that do rarely resemble their original inspiration. Here are the highest-grossing American remakes of foreign films (all domestic box office figures via Box Office Mojo).

30 years on from its release, we take a look back at Three Men And A Baby and the French film that inspired it...
In 1987, a comedy directed by Mr Spock with Magnum Pi, Sam from Cheers and the star of Police Academy was the highest grossing film at the Us box office. For context, it made almost as much money as Lethal Weapon, Predator and Robocop in that year combined. So where are all of its diehard fans?
Among the most successful films of the 1980s, Leonard Nimoy’s Three Men And A Baby stands out as a bit of an anomaly. Despite being hugely popular in its time, it seems to have faded out of the public consciousness without leaving much of a mark, and you’d be hard pushed to find someone who would name it as one of their favourite films. In fact, it...

Award-winning cinematographer Escoffier dies
Jean-Yves Escoffier, a French cinematographer who shot the original Three Men and a Cradle for Coline Serreau, has died of a heart seizure in Los Angeles. He was 52. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday at the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena. He died April 1. A graduate of the Ecole Louis Lumiere in Paris, Escoffier was known in Europe for his collaboration with director Leos Carax, with whom he made three films: Les Amants du Pont-Neuf (The Lovers on the Bridge), for which he won a European Academy Felix Award; Mauvais sang (Bad Blood); and Boy Meets Girl. He received a Cesar Award for his work on Trois Hommes et un couffin, as the Cradle film was titled in French. Escoffier came to the United States during the early 1990s and shot 14 features, including The Crow: City of Angels, Gummo, Good Will Hunting, Nurse Betty, Possession and Cradle Will Rock. His last completed feature, The Human Stain for director Robert Benton, will be released in the fall by Miramax and Lakeshore. Before his death, Escoffier was working on director Wong Kar-wai's futuristic drama 2046. Escoffier also made many award-winning short dramatic films and documentaries. He shot the claymation project Le Chateau de sable (The Sand Castle), which won the 1978 Oscar for best animated short. He was director of photography for commercials and music videos, collaborating with Luc Besson, Jean Pierre Jeunet, David Lynch, Jean Baptiste Mondino, Phil Morrison and Mark Romanek.
