Upload Season 4: Which Hotel Is the Prime Video Filmed At?
Image
Set in a near future, the Prime Video series, Upload, transports the audience to a digital afterlife, Lakeview. But the stunning resort seen on screen is very real. The picturesque location, which featured as the luxurious virtual heaven Lakeview, is actually the Mohonk Mountain House, a Victorian castle resort in New Paltz, New York, surrounded by 40,000 acres of protected forest.

“It was a pleasure to work with the cast and crew,” said Mohonk reps, as per Hyny.info. The resort itself expressed delight at being featured in the show. “Our guests have always told us that ‘Mohonk is heaven,’ so we’re excited to be featured as a virtual heaven in this new show!

‘House of the Dragon’ Boss Hints at Massive Scope of Season 3
Image
While House of the Dragon Season 3 might not be the most eagerly anticipated season of the Game of Thrones franchise ever. It is still well and truly anticipated as the Dance of Dragons finally shifts into full gear. Many viewers of the show's second season had anticipated far more action than they eventually got during its sophomore run. Besides the Battle of Rook's Rest, House of the Dragon Season 2 did not feature any other large-scale conflicts, with the Battle of the Burning Mill taking place off-screen. Showrunner Ryan Condal has teased the unprecedented size of the production scale for Season 3 in a new update.

Season 2 ended with the Greens and the Blacks poised to clash at the Battle of the Gullet. Many viewers had expected that the naval conflict would close out the sophomore season, but that didn't materialize. Condal had previously promised that four major events would be covered in the new season,...

Review: Larry Cohen’s ‘The Stuff’ on Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Writer-director Larry Cohen’s The Stuff takes aim at consumerism, advertising, and right-wing paranoia, and though high on the gore quotient, it isn’t really a horror movie. Using its high-concept sci-fi premise—an evil corporation mass markets a sentient yogurt-like product that slowly takes over its consumer’s mind and body—to ground its supercharged satire, The Stuff is the Catch-22 of alien-invasion movies, made three years before Chuck Russell’s remake of Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr.’s The Blob. Only here the threat comes bubbling up through the ground rather than from beyond the stars.

In the early stages of its takeover, the Stuff proves highly addictive, playing on the notion that corporations knowingly peddle harmful products to unsuspecting consumers. It also points out that consumerism itself is akin to addiction. Hooked users end up being known as “Stuffies.” Throughout, Cohen takes on the glib superficiality of contemporary advertising,...

‘The Stuff’ 4K Uhd Review (Arrow Video)
Image
Stars: Michael Moriarty, Andrea Marcovicci, Garrett Morris, Paul Sorvino | Written and Directed by Larry Cohen

Larry Cohen is the imaginative director who brought the world such cult classics as Q: The Winged Serpent, the It’s Alive film series, and God Told Me To. On March 23, 2019, Cohen died from cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, California, at age 82. But he left behind some amazingly entertaining films.

Probably one of the most entertaining of his films, arguably, would be 1985’s The Stuff. This satirical science fiction horror film, written and directed by Larry Cohen and was the typical 80s sci-fi horror of the time. Campy, creepy and cool as could be. The Stuff is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, so Arrow Video has decided to celebrate with a new deluxe 4k Ultra HD release.

The Stuff is the new dessert taking supermarket shelves by storm. It’s delicious, low in...

‘The Stuff’ Is Back and Hungrier Than Ever
Image
Arrow Films is reviving one of the most bizarre and biting satires in horror cinema with the announcement of a new Limited Edition 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release of The Stuff, set to hit shelves on 21 July. Originally unleashed on audiences in 1985, Larry Cohen’s cult sci-fi horror gem serves up a sharp jab at American consumerism, advertising manipulation, and the insatiable appetite of the masses – all wrapped in gooey, alien-infested packaging.

The Stuff follows David “Mo” Rutherford, a former FBI agent turned industrial saboteur, who teams up with junk food magnate Charles “Chocolate Chip Charlie” Hobbs and a young boy named Jason. Their goal: uncover the sinister truth behind the wildly popular dessert sweeping the nation. With its zero calories, delicious taste, and unsettling side effects, The Stuff is more than just another snack; it’s a parasitic organism that turns its consumers into hollowed-out shells, paving the way for a zombie-like takeover.

‘Murder By Phone’ – This 1980s Horror Movie Needs to Be Rescued from Obscurity
Image
In the years leading up to 1982’s Murder by Phone, telephones had mostly been used as a portent in horror — that first tangible sign of danger. In many pitches, both old and new, the recipients of creepy calls would have anywhere from moments to days before meeting their grisly fate. The killer could be lurking right around the corner, or a death curse required extra time to ripen. The villain in Michael Anderson’s film, on the other hand, was less patient and more direct. Once a potential target was made, their demise was immediate, not imminent.

Prior to finding its way to the big screen, Murder by Phone started out as a novel, or to be more specific, a novelization. On average, a novelization is released ahead of its film counterpart, yet that gap also tends to be small and somewhat punctual. In the case of Murder by Phone,...

The Only Major Actor Still Alive From ABC's The Invaders
Image
When you think of 1960s sci-fi shows, what titles come to mind? The earliest, campiest iteration of "Star Trek" is a no-brainer, as is anthology standard-bearer "The Twilight Zone." You might recall "Lost in Space," the original run of "Doctor Who," or even "The Jetsons," but the chances are "The Invaders" won't be on the tip of most peoples' tongues.

The short-lived ABC series about an alien invasion was unlike any other show of its time, but it remains more a cult classic than a part of the zeitgeist to this day. "The Invaders" ran for two seasons, with future "Perfect Strangers," "The Stuff," and "Maniac Cop" writer Larry Cohen as its mastermind and prolific early TV producer Quinn Martin executive producing. Unlike the flying saucer stories that would populate the decades to come, "The Invaders" was more a paranoid bureaucratic thriller than a little green men-filled horror story. Roy Thinnes,...

Maniac Cop (1988) – What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
A brutal killer is stalking the streets of New York City; a man dressed as a police officer. He lures victims in with a false sense of security, traps them with the authority an officer of the law commands, and he murders them, whether they’re guilty or innocent. It took a couple of genre icons to get this idea into production and more icons to deal with the threat on the screen. This is the story of Maniac Cop, and we’re going to find out what happened to this horror movie.

It all began with the 1980 slasher Maniac. The mainstream feature directorial debut of William Lustig, the film caught a lot of attention when it was released, especially for the shocking moments of violence, featuring Tom Savini gore effects. Lustig followed that up with the 1982 action thriller Vigilante, which gained a cult following, but wasn’t a financial success at first.

It’s Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

10 Classic Horror Movie Flops That Deserve A Modern Remake
Image
Remakes are pretty common in the horror genre, but not necessarily popular and not always good. Studios that own classic intellectual properties like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" obviously want to monetize them, but longtime fans have a hard time getting past anyone besides Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger or Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface. It's a problem at least as old as Universal's classics -- Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were not the only actors to play Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, respectively, but they are the names and faces that everyone remembers and loves from the Universal Monsters movies.

So why remake the hits? Why not remake flops instead? Sure, some of those flops may have intense fan bases, but imagine how many more people would love them if the concept were done better the second time around? A clever notion that...

10 Monster Movie Flops That Should’ve Been Hits
Image
Monster movies are a popular subgenre that often features unique, threatening creatures, resulting in exciting and thrilling narratives, but a few monster films over the years have taken longer to earn proper appreciation. Many of these films fall into the horror and science-fiction genre, from the underrated creature film Deep Rising to the now-deemed cult classic Anaconda. The reasons for the poor box office performances of these monster movies include unfortunate release dates, deceptive marketing, and unintentional campy tones audiences couldn't get behind.

Regardless of whether audiences have changed their tune about such monster movies, the response upon the films' release was less than enthusiastic. Though it's understandable why a handful of monster films were unsuccessful, it's a shame considering they contain enjoyable components that should have been more than enough to lead them to success at the box office.

37-Year-Old Horror Cult Classic Gets New Sequel, Director Teases a 'Sload of Gore'
Image
A horror cult classic from the 1980s has just been given an update. Written and directed by Ryan Krueger, the new Street Trash is now available on Digital and Screambox.

Street Trash is a new sequel to the 1987 film of the same name directed by J. Michael Muro. 37 years after its release, the film is known among horror fans as one of the decade's best "melt movies" alongside titles such as The Stuff and The Blob remake. The newly-released sequel similarly utilizes 80s-style practical effects to reimagine Street Trash in just as much of a revolting way, and as Kruger teased in a new interview with Horror Geek Life, it's resulted in putting a "sh*tload of gore" on display.

6 Biggest Differences Between the Original Street Trash and the 2024 Sequel of the Same Name
Image
In 1987, one of the world's most shocking movies stained the silver screen: Street Trash, a pitch-black comedy about killer malt liquor. It has divided horror fans ever since. Many were startled by the news that someone was remaking this uniquely inventive and transgressive film, but 2024's Street Trash is a very different beast: a cyberpunk-tinged South African caper in which the deadly drink Tenafly Viper is weaponized by the government to wipe out "undesirable" citizens.

Jim Muro and Roy Frumkes' original Street Trash was born in a Brooklyn junkyard at the height of New York's homelessness crisis, and it was custom-made to offend as many people as possible. By contrast, Ryan Kruger's standalone sequel is a slick, colorful, strangely sweet fantasy about friendship and hopes for a brighter future. Though the new film pays loving homage to its source, it is starkly different in many ways, and some fans may even prefer it.

'Street Trash' Review: Melting Faces Redux
Image
Within the vastness of the horror genre, there are myriad subgenres which group together similar films, few as niche as 'melt movies.' The very limited genre is kind of like body horror that's specifically devoted to the gory melting of faces and bodies. Slime City, The Stuff, The Blob, The Incredible Melting Man, Body Melt these are some of the slime fests that have earned the infamous nomenclature over the years. This also includes Street Trash, a certain American cult classic from 1987 which was just reimagined by actor and filmmaker Ryan Kruger for an all-new feature that he produced in South Africa.

The basic ingredients can still be found in the 2024 version of the same name, which will be released on digital on Nov. 19, 2024. Protagonists from the homeless community, characters melting in horrific fashion, severed privates, and anti-totalitarian rebellion all run rampant in Kruger's Street Trash, a tried and...

10 Best Werewolf Movies Of The 1980s
Image
Though they don't have nearly as many big-screen appearances as zombies or vampires, werewolves are still popular characters depicted in several films. It's not always the case, but most films with the hairy supernatural species show the werewolf characters as ordinary people turning into vicious killers. However, it's not a rule that werewolf stories must be told within the horror genre. Films like Teen Wolf have used lycanthropy to tell relatable coming-of-age stories through a comedic lens.

Stories of lycanthropy align with the 1980s cultural shift when conversations around sex and puberty were seeping into pop culture. Many of the '80s werewolf films deal with supernatural characters entering a new phase of life, with the physical transformation from human to wolf being representative of this change. Many of these transformations depicted in '80s werewolf films are presented as being painful, which happens to pair well with gory imagery typically associated with horror films.

Sitges 2024: ‘Ick’ Review
Image
Stars: Brandon Routh, Malina Weissman, Harrison Cone, Debra Wilson, Diya Rao, Taia Sophia, Zeke Donovan Jones, Jeff Fahey, Mena Suvari, Peter Wong | Written by Joseph Kahn, Dan Koontz, Samuel Laskey | Directed by Joseph Kahn

Former Superman Brandon Routh stars in this smalltown horror flick from director Joseph Kahn that fondly recalls genre classics such as The Blob (1958) and The Stuff (1985). Directed by Joseph Kahn (Detention), who co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Koontz and Samuel Laskey, Ick is an enjoyably gloopy, blackly comic alien invasion thriller, anchored by a likeable lead performance from Routh.

Set in the small town of Eastbrook, Ick begins in the year 2000, where high school football star Hank Wallace (Routh) has his promising career cut short when he trips over a black plant-like substance on the field, injuring his leg. To make matters worse, his girlfriend Staci (Mena Suvari) breaks up with him soon afterwards and takes...

Body Snatchers (1993) – The Test of Time
Image
There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

‘Ick’ Review: Brandon Routh Finds a New Way to Be Super in Joseph Kahn’s Frenetic Monster Movie
Image
In a film where no shot lasts beyond a handful of seconds, the world stops briefly to go over the origins of the black goo that gives “Ick” its title. But in the latest madness from director Joseph Kahn, no one in the small, suburban town of Eastbrook can be sure where it came from, or for how long exactly it’s been around. It’s actually this lack of interest in deeper introspection that the longtime pop culture provocateur takes on in what he dubbed a “soft rock horror” movie before its debut at the Toronto Film Festival. With one of cinema’s most malleable metaphors for societal anxieties since such films as “The Blob” and “The Stuff,” he certainly grabs attention.

Only Kahn — still best known for music videos for the likes of Britney Spears and Taylor Swift, amidst features such as “Torque,” “Detention” and “Bodied” — could make...

10 Weirdest Sci-Fi Movies Of The 1980s
Image
Already known for their imaginative, often futuristic worlds, many sci-fi films from the 1980s are positively even more weird. Certain filmmakers, including John Carpenter and Terry Gilliam, took full advantage of the creative possibilities the genre has to offer and wound up creating memorable and odd films that have both alienated and welcomed audiences into the already complex stories associated with science fiction.

Additionally, most sci-fi films involve commentary on political or social issues. Films like The Stuff and They Live are just two examples of films with deeper meanings told through unexpected lenses, like a murderous, addictive dessert or sunglasses that show an alternate reality when one looks through them. The weirdest sci-fi films of the decade evoke a range of emotions, from laughter to discomfort, and ask that audiences let go and trust the rules established in their unconventional sci-fi worlds.

‘Mind Body Spirit’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Sarah J. Bartholomew, Anna Knigge, Madi Bready, Kristi Noory | Written and Directed by Alex Henes, Matthew Merenda

Mind Body Spirit may be the first horror film centred around yoga. No, not yoghurt, The Stuff did that decades ago, but yoga. Yes, there was Yoga Hosers, but that was about two yoga practitioners, not about yoga itself. And it was a comedy, which this very definitely isn’t.

Anya was left a house in California by the grandmother she barely knew existed, let alone met. If she’d read a few of my reviews, she would have known what a bad idea that was, though after seeing a video call between her and her mother Lenka (Anna Knigge) I can’t blame her for moving cross-country to become a yoga and fitness influencer, something her childhood friend Kenzi has been very successful at.

It’s while making her first video,...

Thanksgiving Brilliantly Paid Off A 23-Year-Old Horror Tease
Image
Thanksgiving pays off a 23-year-old horror tease from Scream 3. Patrick Dempsey, who played a red herring in Scream 3, stars as a sheriff/murderer in Thanksgiving. Sheriff Newlon in Thanksgiving kills out of revenge for a lost lover from a previous Black Friday massacre.

Thanksgiving tells an original story, but it paid off a tease from another horror movie released 23 years before Thanksgiving’s release. Based on the fake trailer of the same name that Eli Roth made for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse project, Thanksgiving is a slasher movie that evokes some of the most notable titles from the slasher genre. Thanksgiving takes the audience to Plymouth, Massachusetts, where RightMart’s Black Friday sale goes horribly, resulting in stampedes and various people dying.

How ‘The Crazies’ Reinterprets a Romero Classic for a New Generation [Revenge of the Remakes]
Image
There’s a solid chance this month’s edition of “Revenge of the Remakes” ends up as one of my favorite column entries. George A. Romero’s The Crazies and Breck Eisner’s The Crazies inspire an exceptional case study about the peaceful coexistence between remakes and originals. Both filmmakers choose unique perspectives when dooming small-town America, even though the early 1970s and dawning 2010s validate eerily similar conspiracy paranoias. Stacking these Trixie-toxin thrillers back-to-back validates why remakes aren’t here to piss all over your safe, swaddling nostalgia blankets. Remakes aren’t the enemy — they’re a golden opportunity.

Romero’s The Crazies could only accomplish so much as a commentary against bureaucratic incompetence given the $270K budget. It benefits from a facelift, much like how Wes Craven’s The Hills Have Eyes reaches its full potential as a bloodthirsty 2000s revamp. That’s not a shot at legends...

Evil Dead Rise review: A return to bloody good fun for the demonic franchise
Image
Evil Dead Rise Photo: Warner Bros. It can be argued that 1981’s The Evil Dead, made on a shoestring budget when director Sam Raimi was barely 21, kicked off the 1980s boom in horror comedy, which would include Ghostbusters, Return Of The Living Dead, Re-Animator, The Stuff, Beetlejuice, Gremlins, and (in...

Eli Roth's Thanksgiving Is Becoming A Real Movie, Patrick Dempsey In Talks To Star
Image
You'd think Halloween would be the holiday that the lion's share of holiday-themed horror movies would center around. But that would have to be Christmas, which has inspired the likes of classics such as "Black Christmas," "Silent Night, Deadly Night," "Gremlins," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," the incredible "Tales From The Crypt" segment "And All Through The House," and so many more.

Maybe it's because Christmas is supposed to represent the pinnacle of goodness and charity that mucking it all up with blood, guts, and terror is just too perverse to resist. But of all the other holidays on the calendar, Thanksgiving gets my vote for the most untapped potential, horror-wise. Pilgrims? Unseasoned food? Family coming to my house? Wake me up when the nightmare is over.

While there has been a solid assortment of Thanksgiving-themed shockers over the years, from "Kristy" to "Séance" to the delightfully campy "Into The Dark" film "Pilgrim,...

Eli Roth Thanksgiving Grindhouse Horror Movie Gets Exciting Casting Update
Image
The Grindhouse feature film Thanksgiving has a big star on the horizon to take the lead role. The film, which is being directed by Eli Roth, is an expansion of the parody trailer he contributed to the 2007 theatrical experience Grindhouse. The project was a double feature of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's retro throwback films Death Proof and Planet Terror that played faux trailers in between the features, including other titles that were eventually adapted into full films like Machete and Hobo with a Shotgun.

Per Deadline, a major star is currently in talks to take the lead in Eli Roth's Thanksgiving. The star in question is Patrick Dempsey, who is best known for playing McDreamy on the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, on which he appeared for over 250 episodes. More recently, he appeared in the 2022 Disney+ sequel Disenchanted, reprising his role from the original 2007 Enchanted.

Uncle Sam Is William Lustig's Final, Underseen Grindhouse Masterpiece
Image
The 1980s saw no shortage of cinematic offerings from disreputable exploitation directors, most of whom were known for marrying subversive politics with a mastery of down-low, oft-repugnant grindhouse shocks. Consider the films of Larry Cohen, a prolific genre maverick who has directed landmarks works in the respective subcategories of Blaxploitation, supernatural horror (It’s Alive and its sequels), werewolf flicks (Full Moon High), and John Carpenter-inspired social lampoons (The Stuff). Or how about the cheerfully perverse filmography of Frank Henenlotter, who gave us the button-pushing likes of Basket Case and Frankenhooker? Do we even have to mention Troma's output during this same period? Seriously, have you guys seen The Toxic Avenger?...

A choker of black material circled her neck, traveling down her throat to meet up with the bust of her leotard-like bodice, some metallic links adorning the material for added effect.

Demi was all legs for the incredible new look as she continued to promote her newest album Holy Fvck, her second in just over a year following the release of her powerful Dancing With the Devil…...

Criminally Underrated ’80s Horror Movie Is Finally Getting a Video Game Adaptation
Les Clowns tueurs venus d'ailleurs (1988)
The Gamescom 2022 opening night ceremony featured a surprising number of fascinating new game trailers. However, the show was arguably stolen by the surprising reveal of a multiplayer horror game based on an eternally underrated ’80s horror movie.

Yes, as surprising as it may sound, developer Teravision Games has somehow convinced Good Shepherd Entertainment to let them make a video game based on 1988’s Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Seriously, there’s a trailer for the game and everything.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game (great name) is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game that pits a team of seven humans against a squad of three Klowns. The Klowns have access to a vareity of circus-themed sci-fi weaponry that should give them an immediate edge in most fights. The humans, meanwhile, enjoy an obvious numbers advantage as well as access to a number of class-based abilities and various pieces of weapons...

The Grammy-nominated artiste’s new record marks a stark shift in image and sound from their revelatory 2021 album “Dancing With the Devila The Art of Starting Over’, reports ‘Billboard’.

Why Demi Lovato Now Uses Both ‘They/Them’ and ‘She/Her’ Pronouns
Image
For many, Demi Lovato was one of the first artists to openly use “they/them” pronouns and identify as non-binary. And Lovato’s decision to change her pronouns, after being hyper-feminized as a teen star on Disney Channel, catalyzed discussions about gender identity. Some of those conversations often diminished Lovato’s gender identity as the butt of a joke, complete with a blatant disdain for their fluidity.

In a recent interview on the Spout podcast, Lovato explained to host Tamara Dhia the usage of their pronouns, saying that she’s...
