Stone Cold: Brian Bosworth action classic is coming to 4K!
Image
Craig R. Baxley started off working as a stuntman in the early 1970s, and just a few years later he started directing second unit on movies and TV shows. In the ’80s, he directed multiple episodes of The A-Team – and then it was time for him to make his feature directing debut… and with his first three features, he delivered three of the coolest action movies ever made: Action Jackson, I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel), and Stone Cold. We’re big fans of all of those films here at JoBlo, and when it comes to Stone Cold, Chris Bumbray has written a “Best Movie You Never Saw” article and video on the film and John Fallon has put it in the “Arrow Recommends” spotlight. Today, we have some good Stone Cold news to celebrate, as Kino Lorber – the company that gave the film a special edition...

‘Y2K’ Review
Image
Stars: Jaeden Martell, Tim Heidecker, Alicia Silverstone, Julian Dennison, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, Kyle Mooney | Written by Evan Winter | Directed by Kyle Mooney

At the end of 1999 humanity faced the first major crisis of the computer era, the Y2K Bug. For those lucky enough to be too young to remember, it was feared the fact most programs hard coded the “19” and only stored the last two digits of a year in memory would cause them to think the year 2000 was actually 1900 and plunge the world into chaos.

While there were some problems, it ended up being considerably less than the end of the world as we know it. The biggest problem I had to deal with was my copy of WWE 2K20 crashing until I could download and installed a patch. The characters in Saturday Night Live regular turned first-time director Kyle Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter’s alternate history...

The Best Christmas Horror Movies: From Gremlins to Black Christmas!
Image
‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:

I Come In Peace (1990)

It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

Trancers: Yes, It’s a Christmas Movie
Image
Last Updated on December 26, 2024

Action fans have plenty of choices when it comes to Christmas viewing. You can watch John McClane take down bad guys at Nakatomi Plaza and Dulles International Airport in Die Hard and Die Hard 2; root for Rambo as he destroys a small town in First Blood; thrill at the sight of Marion “Cobra” Cobretti taking on the Night Slasher; see James Bond deal with love, loss, and Blofeld in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service; have a Shane Black marathon, starting with the Martin Riggs / Roger Murtaugh pairing Lethal Weapon; watch Houston police officer Jack Caine battle an extraterrestrial drug dealer in I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel); take in a viewing of Batman Returns… the list goes on and on. But one movie that doesn’t get enough credit for being a sci-fi action Christmas classic is director Charles Band’s 1984 film Trancers…...

Poll: What’s the best Christmas action movie?
Image
Christmas has long been a favorite setting for action movie directors, as there’s something about the juxtaposition of holiday cheer against the hardcore violence of an R-rated action movie that makes the whole thing too tempting an opportunity to pass up. Indeed, there have been some Christmas action movie classics (many of which are written by Shane Black), which we dug into here, but now the time has come for you folks to have your say. What’s the greatest Christmas action movie? Is it a heavyweight like Die Hard or Lethal Weapon, or something more off the beaten path?

In making these lists, I was surprised at just how many action flicks take place around the holiday season. Granted, some of them are more obvious than others. I never realized First Blood was set at Christmas until watching it in 4K, where you can see how the police...

I Come in Peace (aka Dark Angel): The Best Christmas Action Movie You Never Saw?
Image
I Come in Peace… You Go in Pieces!

So goes one of the coolest one-liners I have ever heard, and it’s part of one of the most unheralded Christmas action movies ever. Now, Christmas action movies have always been a thing. Something about the juxtaposition of the holidays and ultra-violent action has always been irresistible to Hollywood. In movies like First Blood and To Live and Die in LA, the holiday theme makes the desperately violent scenario all the more grim. At the same time, other classics like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard ultimately have Christmas messages about friendship and family that come through just as strongly as in a straight-up Christmas movie like It’s a Wonderful Life.

Yet, not every Christmas action flick becomes a classic, which brings me to this special Christmas edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw, where we tackle the Dolph Lundgren Actioner I Come In Peace,...

10 Best Christmas Movies Starring Action Stars
Image
The Christmas holiday season is the perfect time to unwind with family, share gifts, eat your body weight in Turkey, and feast your eyes on as many movies as possible. There's always something on at the cinema that's perfect escapism during the holidays, and the streaming services will also be churning out their latest Christmas offering, like Dwayne Johnson's Red One. However, audiences also get movies with star actors who are not usually associated with festive films.

The holiday season would definitely feel like it's lacking something if there weren't numerous festive offerings to consume. Whether it's a family ritual, like sitting down to watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, or catching a festive horror like Terrifier 3. However, what's so wonderful about Christmas movies is how they often subvert audience expectations by casting actors not usually associated with the genre.

Love Actually (2003) Starring Liam Neeson

Van Damme and Seagal both almost fought Yetis in separate projects
Image
It’s always cool when we have the chance to watch action heroes venture into horror territory. We’ve seen Arnold Schwarzenegger take on the Predator, battle Satan (in End of Days), and raise a zombie daughter (in Maggie). Sylvester Stallone has taken on psycho killers in Cobra and Eye See You. Charles Bronson tracked a serial killer in 10 to Midnight. Dolph Lundgren faced off with an alien drug dealer in I Come in Peace. Jean-Claude Van Damme played both a serial killer and the killer’s heroic clone in Replicant. Steven Seagal killed vampires in Against the Dark. The list goes on… but two separate action horror projects we tragically missed out on would have given us the sight of both Van Damme and Seagal fighting Yetis, a.k.a. Abominable Snowmen!

Back in 1995, Universal Pictures purchased a screenplay by Troy Neighbors and Steven Fienberg that told the...

Nicole Kidman Nearly Starred In One Of David Fincher's Most Underrated Movies
Image
Australian actress Nicole Kidman began her professional career in 1983 with an appearance in the holiday film "Bush Christmas," and followed it immediately with Brian Trenchard-Smith's very watchable teens-rule actioner "BMX Bandits." She was 16 at the time. Kidman was a striking screen presence, however, and she immediately began a busy career that hasn't slowed since. For six years, Kidman was all over Aussie TV and cinema, with the actress finally breaking into Hollywood in 1989 with her role in the taut thriller "Dead Calm." In 1990, she was cast opposite Tom Cruise in Tony Scott's "Days of Thunder," and her superstar status was cemented. She also began dating Cruise that year, and they married in 1990, staying one of Hollywood's most visible power couples for a decade.

Kidman was drawn to a great variety of projects, appearing in costume dramas, comedies, FX-based blockbusters, Oscar bait nonsense, and bonkers experiments like "Dogville," "Fur,...

‘The Last Kumite’ Review
Image
Stars: Mathis Landwehr, Kira Kortenbach, Matthias Hues, Billy Blanks, Mike Derudder, Mike Möller, Cynthia Rothrock, Kurt McKinney, David “Bolo Jr” Yeung | Written by Ross W. Clarkson, Sean David Lowe | Directed by Ross W. Clarkson

As you can probably tell just from the title, The Last Kumite was inspired by 80s action films, the iconic Bloodsport in particular. And it opens like it stepped out of a time warp from the 1980s with an old-school pop song playing over a montage of scenes shot on the streets of New York City before taking us to the dojo where Michael Rivers is teaching his daughter Bree (Kira Kortenbach).

After an inspirational speech at the end of her training, it’s time to go see Mom. If you guessed that means a trip to the cemetery, you’ve seen as many of these films as I have.

The next day, Michael fights in...

I Come in Peace / Dark Angel 4K release coming from Shout Factory
Image
I have had a strong appreciation for the 1990 sci-fi action thriller I Come in Peace, which is also known by the title Dark Angel in some territories, ever since it first came out when I was a kid, and several of my cohorts here on JoBlo are fans of the film as well – with John “The Arrow” Fallon recommending it and Chris Bumbray calling it “The Best Christmas Action Movie You Never Saw.” So we’re excited to hear that Shout Factory will be giving the film a 4K release on July 9th – and if you’re also a fan of this movie and want to add the 4K release to your collection, it’s available for pre-order at This Link!

Directed by Craig R. Baxley from a screenplay by Jonathan Tydor and David Koepp (under the name Leonard Maas Jr.), I Come in Peace has the following synopsis: Renegade...

The Most Underrated Action Movies of the 1990s
Image
The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.

It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

Jurassic World: Steve Brusatte returns as paleontology consultant for the new sequel
Image
Earlier this week, we caught word that Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new entry in the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World franchise – which is no surprise, since the Jurassics and Fast & Furious are the studio’s two big moneymakers. What’s interesting about this new sequel is the fact that the screenplay is being written by David Koepp, who previously wrote the original Jurassic Park and its follow-up The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Now paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Steve Brusatte has taken to social media to confirm that the project is moving forward – and he knows, because it’s so far along that he has already signed on to be the dinosaur expert consultant on it. That’s a job Brusatte also had on the previous movie, Jurassic World Dominion, where he was consultant alongside paleontologist Jack Horner, who has been a consultant on all six Jurassic movies to date.

Wanted Man trailer: Dolph Lundgren, Kelsey Grammer action theatres gets January release
Image
Action icon Dolph Lundgren and Frasier himself Kelsey Grammer – who have actually worked together before, on The Expendables 3 – star in the upcoming action thriller Wanted Man, which is set to receive a theatrical, VOD, and digital release on January 19th. With that date just one month away, a trailer for Wanted Man has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above. A poster for the film has also been unveiled, and that can be found at the bottom of this article.

Lundgren also directed this film, working from a screenplay he wrote with Hank Hugues and Michael Worth. Here’s the synopsis: Johansen (Lundgren) is an aging detective, whose outdated policing methods have given the department a recent public relations problem. To save his job, he is sent to Mexico to extradite a female witness to the murders of two DEA agents. Once there, he finds...

10 Great Horror Movies With Bad Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Image
Great horror movies often receive low critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, even when they are undeserving of it. Critics overlook the genre's artistic value. Underrated horror movies like The Tall Man and Lake Placid suffer from low Rotten Tomatoes ratings, despite their clever premises and success with audiences. Rotten Tomatoes ratings don't accurately reflect the quality of horror movies like Scream 4, Deep Rising, and I Come In Peace, which deserve more recognition.

Even great horror movies are sometimes saddled with terrible critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes, as evidenced by a number of underrated gems. Critics are often unkind to horror movies, even when there is no real justification for it. Like comedies, horror movies have traditionally been viewed as a lower art form than dramas. Despite the critical reevaluation horror cinema has undergone in recent decades, movies from the genre are more likely to go underappreciated by reviewers.

10 Best 90s Dtv Action Stars
Image
The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:

Dolph Lundgren

Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

‘Dark Angel’ – The Endorphin-Harvesting Dolph Lundgren Alien Movie You Should Probably Watch
Image
Not many horror films truly scare me these days. But alien horror? Even the ones substandard to most send me into a fear frenzy. That’s why I’m taking a deep dive into the sub-genre.

Welcome to Aliens Scare Me. A look into alien horror films on a case by case basis.

This month we’re probing deep into action/sci-fi territory with 1990’s Dark Angel; or depending on where you find it, I Come In Peace, starring the great Dolph Lundgren.

What It’s About

Rogue cop Jack Caine (Lundgren) has his partner killed by a gang of old white men called “The White Boys” (dead serious) who are subsequently murdered by a mysterious force using what appears to be a CD Rom disc as a weapon (still serious). While investigating, Jack and his new partner by force, Special Agent Arwood (Brian Benben), come across an gigantic alien...

Chilean horror maestro Jorge Olguin and his producers will be at Cannes’ Marché du Film and Producers Network to seek international co-producers and distributors for his upcoming sci-fi horror film “The Shape of Fear” (“La Forma del Miedo”), described as a cross between “The Andromeda Strain” and “The Thing.”

Its teaser trailer, unveiled exclusively in Variety, opens with a panning shot of Chile’s stunning Atacama Desert as a mysterious white light streaks across the sky to the tune of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, which has never sounded more sinister. A lab scientist, played by Mayte Rodriguez, studies the patient’s blood sample under a microscope and alarmed at what she sees, urges everyone to put on their masks. It Came From The Tube: Mind Over Murder (1979)
The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978) was an unpopular thriller with a clever premise. Laura would have visions whenever a killer attacked someone, and she witnessed the murders through his eyes. Naturally, TV had to take a crack at the premise, which brought us Mind Over Murder (1979), a thriller that adds a few wrinkles to the basic premise and ends up being the more enjoyable of the two.

Originally airing on October 23rd as part of The CBS Tuesday Night Movies, Mind Over Murder bore down against NBC Tuesday Night at the Movies and ABC’s Three’s Company/Taxi/Hart to Hart lineup. Not hard to tell where the majority of viewers planted their eyeballs this night, but those who stayed with “the eye” were treated to a mostly effective thriller with some genuinely unsettling moments. You shouldn’t have too much Tripper in your diet, after all.

‘The Hidden’s Meaning: What It Means To Be Human
The zeitgeist of one of the 80s more insane buddy cop flicks.

Buddy cop movies are plentiful to be sure, in fact, when The Hidden was released in 1987, it wasn’t even the biggest buddy cop flick of the year. Ironically, The Hidden costar Michael Nouri turned down the role of Detective Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon to star in this sci-fi actioner about an alien inhabiting the bodies of various law-abiding citizens and using their bodies as vessels to engage in brazen crime sprees.

If that synopsis doesn’t grab you, then you really should start evaluating your cinematic perspectives. To those of you who hear that logline and immediately begin prepping your The Hidden/I Come in Peace double feature, bravo. You’ll probably glean a lot from this week’s episode of the Junkfood Cinema podcast.

A common trope of sci-fi movies in which we, at least for a time, follow...

Christine Blackburn in Halloween Party (2012)
Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas from Mariah Carey, Tara Reid, Ashley Tisdale and More
Christine Blackburn in Halloween Party (2012)
If you’re a total procrastinator, don’t have a creative bone in your body, or are cursed with the unfortunate combination of both those traits, Halloween can be a particularly challenging holiday. Not only do you have to come up with an inventive costume that all of your friends will immediately recognize, but you’re then faced with the burden of one-upping yourself every year for the rest of your life. While for most that thought alone would be enough to swear off the holiday for good, but if you still want to try to impress every person you know this October 31st,...

It Came From The Tube: The Dark Secret Of Harvest Home (1978)
I don’t like rituals, period. Whether straitlaced (Christian) or darkly purposed (Satanic), I just find them creepy…and off. So while I won’t stand on ceremony, I will watch, with fascination, films that trot out such pageantry. One of my favorites is a two part TV mini-series, The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978). Oh, and its horror, but I’m sure you already guessed that.

Originally airing on NBC Monday, January 23rd (in the NBC Monday Night at the Movies slot) and Tuesday the 24th, 1978, Dark Secret was up against the CBS juggernaut of M*A*S*H/One Day at a Time/Lou Grant. But while many were watching Hawkeye, Schneider, et al crack wise, something insidious was brewing over at The Peacock.

Pull out your yellowed copy of TV Guide and let’s have a look shall we?

The Dark Secret Of Harvest Home (Monday-Tuesday, 9pm,...

*Updated* Russell Crowe to Play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Mummy
*Updated* Russell Crowe confirms earlier reports that he is going to play Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Mummy.

Earlier this week, news broke that Russell Crowe was in discussions to join The Mummy as the classic literary character with a dual personality. Shedding some light on the matter is Crowe himself, who confirmed his involvement while on the press rounds for his new film, The Nice Guys.

Speaking with Collider, Crowe had this to say when asked if he is “officially” on board The Mummy:

“Yeah, I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna play Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society. It’s very interesting, what they’re gonna do with that stuff. I’ve had a couple of chats about it with the director (Alex Kurtzman).”

Previously: According to THR, Crowe is in “early talks” to appear as Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego,...

Universal Reveals the Official Synopsis for The Mummy
Following the recent news that Russell Crowe is in early talks to play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in The Mummy, Universal has now released the official synopsis for the Tom Cruise-starring film.

The synopsis for The Mummy confirms that Sofia Boutella plays the title character while also touching on the modern-day setting and key locations within the story. You can read the full synopsis below, courtesy of Collider:

“Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative...

Muslim Says Trump Audience Taunted Her: ‘You Have a Bomb’ (Video)
Donald Trump
A Muslim woman who was kicked out of a Donald Trump rally on Friday says she was taunted by Trump supporters chanting “You have a bomb.” The demonstrator, Rose Hamid, attended the rally wearing a T-shirt that read “I come in peace” and stood silently in protest when Trump linked Syrian refugees to Isis. Hamid told CNN that as she was being escorted out of the rally, Trump supporters accused her of having a bomb while others yelled at her to “get out.” Also read: Trump Uses Cosby, Weiner to Hit Hillary on Women's Issues “The crowd got this like,...

50 forgotten sci-fi films from the 1990s
We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?

Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.

But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

So here's a mix of everything from hidden classics to forgettable dreck,...

Sundance 2015: ‘Slow West’ is a tense and thoughtful revisionist western
Slow West

Written and Directed by John Maclean

United Kingdom/New Zealand, 2015

After the film finished, writer and director John Maclean acknowledged how surreal it felt to be premiering a western at Sundance of all places. After all, John Ford filmed many of his classics in the state of Utah, making it a sort of mecca of westerns. This however is very different from the traditional western as it is seen through a foreign lens and with a postmodern knowledge. It calls to mind other revisionist westerns from this century such as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Proposition and Red Hill. The plot takes place in 1870 and follows 16-year-old Jay Cavendish (Kodi Smit-McPhee), who has traveled from Scotland to the American west to find his love, Rose (Caren Pistorius). Accompanying him is a mysterious and formidable drifter, Silas Selleck (Michael Fassbender).

Kodi Smit-McPhee already...

The odd places It’s A Wonderful Life has turned up
Clips of It’s A Wonderful Life appear in all sorts of TV shows and films, some predictable Christmas fare and some you might not expect…

Thanks to NBC’s long-standing tradition of airing Frank Capra’s 1946 festive fantasy drama every 24th of December, It’s A Wonderful Life has become a Stateside Christmas institution. The film’s story of a small town family man facing financial ruin being coaxed back from suicide by an angel who shows him how important he is to the world is now as festive as overspending and overeating.

Its ubiquity means that It’s A Wonderful Life is one of the first ports of call when shows and movies want to inject a festive feel into their fictional worlds, hence it having been subject to more on-screen references, quotes, parodies and homages than you can shake a jingle bell at. The Muppets, The Simpsons,...

Awfully Good: I Come in Peace + Machete Kills (Video)
Since Dolph Lundgren was wasted in Expendables 3, I'm putting him front and center this week. I Come in Peace a.k.a. Dark Angel (1990) Director: Craig R. Baxley Stars: Dolph Lundgren, Brian Benben, Betsy Brantley Rule-breaking cop Jack Caine is already busy taking down a group of yuppie drug dealers when an evil alien heroin enthusiast pays a visit to Earth. Note: For God knows whatever reason, this movie was retitled Dark Angel on DVD, a terrible name that...

Tom Hanks, R. Lee Ermey, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Jim Varney, and Don Rickles in Toy Story (1995)
This Kid's Drawing of Buzz Lightyear Will Change the Way You Watch Toy Story Forever (Kinda Nsfw)
Tom Hanks, R. Lee Ermey, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Jim Varney, and Don Rickles in Toy Story (1995)
This is the Buzz Lightyear you know and love. He's an intergalactic space ranger who says things like "To infinity and beyond!" and "I come in peace!" We're not sure what movie this child was watching, but it definitely wasn't Toy Story and it definitely wasn't rated PG. Kids say the darndest things, but they also can't spell. Which leads to hilarity like this: The photo first surfaced on imgur and there isn't much backstory to it (who the original artist is, how old he or she is, what kind of sexual deviancy Woody is into), but now we all have the Toy Story-American Pie mash-up we never knew we needed. Also, it's Friday and this is just the kind of stupidity we need to make...

‘Ice Soldiers’ Review
Stars: Dominic Purcell, Michael Ironside, Adam Beach, Gabriel Hogan, Benz Antoine, Camille Sullivan | Written by Jonathan Tydor | Directed by Sturla Gunnarsson

It’s safe to say I had some rather high (or low depending on your movie-cheese tolerance) expectations for Ice Soldiers. After all, the film comes from the pen of Jonathan Tydor, who wrote the fantastically over-the-top and ridiculously cheesy Dolph Lundgren-starring sci-fi horror Dark Angel, aka I Come in Peace, back in 1990 and despite a substantial 13 year gap between scripts (he last wrote and directed the Eric Roberts film The Kings Guard in 2000), I still had hopes that this films concept meant the movie would err on the (right) side of insanity…

The film follows a scientific expedition that unearths three genetically engineered Russian super soldiers (the titular Ice Soldiers) frozen in ice since the height of the Cold War. Bodies that have been buried beneath the...

Death Machine (1994) Review

Death Machine (1994)

Written by: Stephen Norrington

Directed by: Stephen Norrington

Cast: Ely Pouget (Hayden Cale), William Hopkins (John Carpenter), John Sharian (Sam Raimi), Martin McDougall (Yutani), Richard Brake (Scott Ridley), Brad Dourif (Jack Dante)

The early to mid-nineties were an interesting time in horror. To coin a very familiar phrase, “It was the best of times, and the worst of times.” I’ll go with the bad stuff first. Nothing much was happening at the popular theatres in the vein of any quality horror, but on the bright side, we did get some small theatrical release and direct to video gems on VHS. At this point VHS was an established format. The novelty had worn off, but all of these really unique movies that would have never been seen, found a home on the rental shelves. I’ve seen some great ones that still are personal favorites,...

If you've been holding out, throw caution to the wind, kids! Blu is where it's at! If you already own the DVD of your favorite flick, is there a need to replace it with a Blu-ray? Scream Factory Found The Fucking Off Switch – A Review Of Eve Of Destruction (Blu-ray)
Eve of Destruction is another one of these early nineties movies, that’s actually a leftover eighties movie in disguise. Scream Factory is almost specializing in this type of movie at this juncture. It’s actually pretty familiar to their Blu-ray release of I Come In Peace. It’s an obscure enough title that virtually no behind-the-scenes footage or any kind of footage that could use used as supplemental material for the disc is in existence, but the fact that it has been released to Blu-ray is an impressive enough accomplishment. I’m not going to sit here, like some would do, and exclaim that Eve of Destruction has always been my favorite movie. In fact, I think I had only seen it twice prior to my Blu-ray viewing. Back in the early days of HBO and Cinemax, of course. But, I did have fond memories of the times that I did see it.

Available Today! John Carpenter Presents Body Bags Scream Factory Collector’s Edition (Review)
Another John Carpenter film receiving the collector’s edition treatment courtesy of Scream Factory, means that I’m going to mention yet again, that in the year 2012, we conducted a year long retrospective series, examining Carpenter’s career in chronological order. If you missed out on the first run of this series, you can play catch up by following this link. Don’t get me wrong, Scream Factory does a fantastic job at supplying extra features on their discs, but this would make the perfect companion piece to any new release Carpenter Blu-rays you decide to pick up. It’s not just movie reviews, it’s an examination of his career as a whole. That being said, Body Bags is one of my least favorite Carpenter films. Most of the time, though, even the few bad Carpenter films have some redeeming qualities, and Body Bags is no exception to that rule.

A Review Of Scream Factory’s Dark Angel / I Come In Peace Blu-Ray
The first couple of years during the nineties were filled with movies that were inarguably left over from the eighties. There were sequels to films from the eighties that would become franchises, such as Die Hard 2, but there were also movies like Men At Work, which I’ve always considered an eighties movie, despite the fact that it was released in the year 1990. And then, you have a film like Dark Angel, known stateside as I Come In Peace. Dark Angel takes all of the elements of genre greats of the eighties, and mashes them together in one bad ass Science Fiction romp, with Dolph Lundgren and Brian Benben(Dream On!) as your pilot and navigator, respectively. It took so long for this film to be released on DVD, that I never thought possible that one day, I would be sitting up at three in the morning one Saturday night,...

L'Homme aux ciseaux (1980)
Scream Factory Reveal Blu-ray Details for 'Q,' 'X-Ray' and More!
L'Homme aux ciseaux (1980)

Scream Factory is just unstoppable this year, with another batch of summer Blu-ray/DVD titles in the pipe. This August, they're rolling out four more cult & horror titles: a double-feature set of obscure slasher X-Ray with the twisty giallo Schizoid; Larry Cohen's comic monster flick Q: The Winged Serpent; and alien action-thriller Dark Angel. Here's the full breakdown on each:     X-Ray (aka Hospital Massacre), starring former Playboy Playmate Barbi Benton, was featured in our Be Kind, Rewind feature series, as it's previously been available only on VHS. It makes its Blu debut as half of a double-feature combo pack with Schizoid, a sleazy giallo-style thriller with legendary movie madman Klaus Kinski (as a therapist, no less!). The DVD presents both features in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and Dolby Digital Stereo, and the Blu-ray in 1080p high-definition widescreen and DTS-hd master audio stereo. Bonus features on this set include an interview with Schizoid actress Donna Wilkes,...
