The first feature film to be released by Walt Disney animation was, as most know, David Hand's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1937. Walt Disney himself, of course, had been working in animation for over 15 years at that point, having founded Laugh-o-Gram Studios in 1921. It was at that studio where Disney developed his taste for well-worn fairy tales, making shorts based on "Little Red Riding Hood," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "Cinderella," and "Alice in Wonderland." That last film provided fodder for a long series of Alice Comedies that launched Walt Disney Production in 1923. The first 56 films made by Disney were Alice Comedies before he shifted to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, making dozens for him as well. In 1928, he debuted Mickey Mouse, and the rest is history.

Nibbler the Nibblonian first appeared on "Futurama" in the episode "Love's Labours Lost in Space", wherein Leela (Katey Sagal) assumed he was a poor, lost animal that merely needed a home. She put an adorable red cape on him and outfitted him with a diaper. Nibbler had a voracious appetite and could consume many, many, many times his own body weight in pork products in a single day. Nibbler would then poop out perfectly round spheres of solidified dark matter that, quite conveniently, could serve as starship fuel.
It was later revealed that Nibbler was, in fact, Lord Nibbler, an impossibly ancient being -- born around 274 Bce -- who could speak in a clear, deep voice. He belonged to a species that possessed fleets of tiny, adorable warships and who were occasionally kidnapped and farmed for their fuel-pooping abilities. For years, whenever someone saw Nibbler speak, he could activate his...

It's one of the tragic moments of adulthood. You sit down to watch a film you idolized in your childhood — and haven't seen in just as long — only to discover a far less magical or even entertaining experience. Luckily, that's absolutely not the case with the 1995 Disney classic "A Goofy Movie," which I recently treated myself to a rewatch of. I am happy to report that the movie is still as heartwarming and hilarious as I remember it. From the big laughs of the Bigfoot scene to the teary eyes I still get when Max and Goofy finally reconcile.
But from the very beginning, Disney had less than stellar expectations for "A Goofy Movie" compared to bigger features like "The Lion King" or "Pocahontas." In fact, it wasn't even developed by Walt Disney Animation Studios (then called Walt Disney Feature Animation) but rather by a subdivision called Disneytoon Studios that...

This week, DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp turns 30. The movie, now available on Disney+, featuring Scrooge McDuck and his hyperactive nephews on a globe-trotting adventure that sees the family bringing home a genie and chased by an evil wizard (voiced by Christopher Lloyd), is the very definition of forgettable – the animation is iffy and the story is fairly well worn, which is to say nothing of the ethnic stereotypes that are problematic to say the least. But the movie, which has become something of a cult classic in the three decades since its release, holds …...

For over six decades, Disney has been igniting in little girls the dream of being a princess. Then, in 2001, with the help of Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway, the House of Mouse showed us that wearing the tiara is not all it’s cracked up to be. The Princess Diaries opened in theaters 15 years ago today. Hathaway’s Mia Thermopiles learns just what kind of pressure and responsibility is involved with being princess when she learns she’s the heir to the crown of Genovia. “I don’t want to run my own country. I just want to pass 10th grade,” she moans. It was the film debut of Anne Hathaway, who has since become Hollywood royalty herself, earning an Oscar for Les Misérables and nabbing coveted roles like Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. The Princess Diaries gave us Anne Hathaway, and it also gave us...

As a child of the 90s, there are many shows that I look back on with great fondness. Disney’s DuckTales was certainly one of them, but that does not mean that it needs to be remade for “a new generation.” Unfortunately, Disney does not care what I think, so let’s get on with it: the network plans to make a new version of DuckTales to show on Disney Xd.
Disney announced the planned DuckTales remake today, with assurances that the show will follow pretty much the same lines as the original. It will tell the tales of Scrooge McDuck, along with his nephews Huey, Dewie, and Louie, and the “temperamental” Donald Duck, as they travel the globe in search of adventure. For older fans, there will also be some of the well-known secondary characters on hand, including Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose,Magica DeSpell & Poe, Ma Beagle and the Beagle Boys (Burger Beagle,...

People of a certain generation probably fondly remember the late ’80s-early ’90s animated Disney series DuckTales, which followed Scrooge McDuck and his curious, mischief-making grandnephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, along with Donald Duck, on worldwide adventures. It ran from 1987-90, and inspired a theatrical animated film DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp in 1990. Well, that generation will have a new version of the series to show to its own children, as Disney Xd announced today that an all-new DuckTales animated series has been ordered for launch in 2017. A Disney Xd release said that the new series will again feature the adventures … Continue reading →
