Spanish comedy about an immortal personage who is brought to life and faces absurd situations

Sevilla , Don Juan Tenorio (Juan Luis Galiardo) comes out from his tomb and goes to a theater where an actor ( Galiardo in double role) is representing the immortal play ¨Don Juan Tenorio¨ by Zorrilla . While the actor has a dirty issue about drug business dealing with a dealer (Luis Escobar) . At a hotel subsequently takes place many incidents between the actor, the ghost Juan and some women (Rossy De Palma , Maria Barranco Veronica Forque) in screwball comedy style . Meantime a Police Inspector (Jose Sazatornil) and his botcher helper (Rafael Alvarez , El Brujo) are investigating the deeds .

This bemusing film contains funny situations , comedy , entertainment , amusement but is regularly developed . The picture is divided by some musical interludes with some players dancing Flamenco . This theme about Don Juan Tenorio was formerly treated by Mercero in a TV film titled ¨Don Juan¨ (1974) which won an award at the Festival of Montreux . Acceptable performance from Juan Luis Galiardo , a good actor , recently deceased , who had a long a prestigious career . Furthermore , there appears various Almodovar girls as Rossy De Palma , Veronica Forque , Maria Barranco and Loles Leon who holds the most amusing role as an actress who only communicates by means of Castañuelas . Colorful cinematography by Carlos Suarez , however being necessary a right remastering . Atmospheric soundtrack by Bernando Bonezzi and full of flamenco music .

The motion picture was professionally directed by Antonio Mercero but with some flaws and resulted to be a failure at Spanish Box office . Mercero is a author of great success TV series and several award-winning films . In 1970 he started working for TV as he shot several documentaries and some chapters for the series "Crónicas Un Pueblo" or ¨Chronicles of a village¨(1971) , a big hit in Spain despite its deep ideological content, risky for the period it was made in ; and specially successful was ¨the phone booth¨ (1970) (TV), which won 10 national and international awards, including the Emmy Award in 1973. Then he realized ¨Los Pajaritos¨ (1973), ¨Gioconda is sad¨ (1975), the series "Ese Señor de Negro" or ¨That man in black¨ (1975), La Noche del Licenciado (1978), and his three biggest hit smashes : ¨Turno Oficio¨ TV series about advocates in law , "Blue summer , Verano Azul" (1978) which became a sociological phenomenon and "Farmacia de Guardia" (1990) about an Apotheke . Other important films directed by Mercero were ¨Hora de Valientes ¨(1998) has been defined by himself as a 'realistic tragicomedy, a romantic history, a historic fresco and a socio-political fable'. Today, he still works for TV as ¨Manolito Gafotas¨ series and some of his latest work in cinema have been ¨Guerra De Papa¨, ¨Esperame en Cielo¨ a parody about a Franco's double , ¨The treasure¨ and ¨Floor 4ª¨ (2002) a film about children with cancer treated with a touch of humor . His last film was ¨? Y Tu Quién Eres?¨ about Alzheimer illness and starred by Manuel Alexandre . Rating : Passable , 5'5 .

a dopey little comedy

The movie begins with Don Juan escaping from Pergatory in order to do a deed good enough to elevate him to heaven. He stumbles into a group working on a play about Don Juan and he is mistaken for the actor who plays the role of Don Juan---who, of course, looks exactly like the actual Don Juan. Then, a series of not terribly funny bits ensue. There is a lot of bawdiness and goofiness, but it appears to be funny and titillating only to the average 13 year-old. Believe me--this movie just misses the mark again and again.

For a MUCH, MUCH better movie, see Ingmar Bergman's movie about Don Juan (THE DEVIL'S EYE). In this film, Don Juan is sent by Satan to despoil a seemingly incorruptible virgin. While this isn't a great film, it's head and shoulders above DON JUAN MY LOVE and is well worth watching.
