The Showtime drama Yellowjackets tells the story of a high-school women's soccer team stranded in the Canadian wilderness by a plane crash. The show splits its attention between two timelines, one following the teenage girls' efforts to survive directly after the crash and another set twenty-five years later which finds a handful of the survivors haunted by an unspoken trauma from their time in Canada.
A mix between a psychological thriller and a survivalist drama, the series expertly plays with the audiences' emotions. The show establishes a sharp contrast between the characters' personalities in the modern day and the 90s, creating an immediate sense of intrigue. Likewise, by using the present as a lens to reveal hints about the past, the show crafts a sense of dread and suspense that hangs around both storylines.

Larry Cohen isn’t really a horror guy, at least not in the same vein as his contemporary filmmakers like Wes Craven, John Carpenter, or Tobe Hooper. Cohen wasn’t even really the same type of director as he wrote almost 3 times as many projects as he directed. What he lacked in quantity for horror movies though, he more than made up for in quality. This quality started with 1974’s It’s Alive and moved through very different types of horror like God Told Me To, The Stuff, and Q the Winged Serpent. The only series of movies he was involved in was his trilogy of It’s Alive movies. While the first two were heavy hitters in terms of themes that were hidden under the guise of creature features, the third one had far less to say but is unfairly seen as less fun. 1987 was a weird year for the man,...

Every genre of horror entertainment has a dedicated audience that will give most installments a chance to impress. When it comes to slasher movies, fans seek out eerie and bloody plots, such as in recent installments such as Scream VI and Longlegs. In the thriller sub-genre, viewers want an intense storyline that keeps them on the edge of their seats, as is the case for films like Hold Your Breath and Caddo Lake.
Many movies touch upon multiple sub-genres that risk either being too heavy-handed and muddled or failing fans of one genre. Slasher thriller movies are popular among horror fans who need to find the balance between terrifying villains and heart-pounding intensity that, when achieved, creates a disturbingly entertaining narrative. One of the great aspects of micro-streaming services is the ability to celebrate granual elements of the genre. For years, horror fans have found long documentaries like Crystal Lake Memories and Never Sleep Again to celebrate their favorite horror icons. Thommy Hutson, the writer on both of those films, now takes over the director’s chair for Doc of Chucky. The five-hour epic documentary highlights the iconic killer doll – Chucky – and the franchise through the lens of Don Mancini’s career. We sat down with Hutson to discuss the film and the difficulty of covering a series with so many twists and turns.
Why Chucky deserved the long-doc treatment
After already covering Freddie, Jason, and Return of the Living Dead, Hutson had to review the genre and decide where to go next. “It really became a question of what’s left. What’s really left to explore in that big...

Not to give you a fright head of Halloween, but an alarming number of fan-favorite movies will be leaving Netflix by the end of October 2024. We all know that movies tend to come and go on Netflix, so even though a long list of movies are departing Netflix this month, the cycle will continue and some might even pop back up in future months.
Last month saw the departures of the Divergent and Fifty Shades of Grey movies, along with beloved movies like A Walk to Remember and The Breakfast Club. This month, as many hit movies are leaving Netflix, too. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Crazy Rich Asians, It Follows, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and more have already left with lots more still to leave.

While Netflix couldn't load up with as many spooky classics as Max, the streaming service did manage to acquire most of the Chucky movies for October. However, Netflix is wasting no time in moving on from the creepy little doll, as the platform announced that all six Chucky movies that are currently available to stream on Netflix will leave at the end of the month. This includes Bride of Chucky, Child's Play 2, Child's Play 3, Cult of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, and Curse of Chucky. Other options for horror fans on Netflix will remain after Halloween, including the modern revival sequels for both Scream and Halloween, which have each made runs in the Netflix Top 10 recently and have no plans to depart the platform that have been announced.

Horror movies have covered a wide range of sub-genres since the earliest days of Hollywood, from supernatural haunting stories to creature feature monster movies. One of the greatest corners of the genre is the slasher, which has given horror some of its greatest icons, from Leatherface and Michael Myers to Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Every decade puts its spin on the sub-genre, and the 1990s were no different.
While the 1990s posted a relatively weak output of slashers, it did deliver some of the genre's most iconic and unique stories, particularly fresh and original ideas. From new franchises bringing the horror genre to new heights to sequels that tried something new, the decade is surprisingly dynamic and versatile. After years of supernatural franchises, the turn of the century looked more towards more grounded takes on the genre, leaning into a balance between horror and thriller for some of its best stories.

However, the streamer also has a great reputation for hosting other content, and they are a one-stop-shop for everything from classic series to some of Hollywood's biggest films.

Fans of the comedy horror Bodies Bodies Bodies will be disappointed to learn that the movie will leave Netflix on Sept. 19, 2024. But the good news is that a long list of horror comedies is available on the streaming service to fill the void. And don't miss this year's Netflix & Chills lineup.
Bodies Bodies Bodies and other horror comedies are a unique subgenre of horror that mixes slasher elements with absurd comedic ones. Mixing comedy with horror is nothing new, as Edgar Allan Poe and other writers often combined the two in their works.
Bride of Chucky
Bride of Chucky is the fourth installment of the Child's Play franchise, written by creator Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu, also known for Freddy vs. Jason (2003). Brad Dourif returns as the voice of Chucky, with Jennifer Tilly portraying Tiffany Valentine, a role she would reprise in several other installments of the franchise.

There are various suggestions as to when the slasher movie sub-genre began, but it's safe to say it's been with us for at least 60 years. And in those 60 years, there's been a lot of dreck. That's not a bad thing, mind you — dreck can be fun! The slasher film, with its propensity for graphic kills and unstoppable killers taking center stage, is prone to sleaze and cheese, and that can be mighty enjoyable. It's a matter of taste — can you stomach what's being churned out? Or will you head to the toilet and lose your lunch? And then ... will you come back for more?
A new month is upon us, which means it's time for me to yet again highlight some streaming horror titles. And this month is all about slashers! Before we get to it, some ground rules. I tried not to be too obvious here. There are a...

The horror genre hasn't always gotten the accolades it deserves. Thankfully, this sad trend is changing with the rise of elevated horror and the success of movies produced by A24. It's been a long time since there are a lot of awesome horror movies with poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. The review site, often regarded as a valuable critical voice among moviegoers, doesn't always have it right when it comes to quality horror movies. Some gems have been considered "splats," even though they're genuinely watchable.
These horror movies have all that fans could want from the genre - memorable kills, intense scenes, and dynamic villains causing all the mayhem. As fans of the genre, viewers could be doing themselves a disservice by taking a Rotten Tomatoes score at face value alone. The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead was a fun remake of the 1968 classic, while we also got the likes of It, Tremors, Child’s Play 2, Gremlins 2, Predator 2 (there’s a theme forming here…) Killer Crocodile 2. Ok, maybe not that last one. Also, if you’re a fan of Stephen King adaptations, the year also brought the ankle smashing Misery with Cathy Bates in full on psycho mode, plus the outlandishly bad, in a good way, Frankenhooker, replete with all of its soft-core pornography and grisly images. Which brings us...

Brad Dourif has had an incredible acting career that stretches back more than fifty years – and back in the early days of that career, he even earned a “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” Oscar nomination for his performance in the 1975 classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Over a decade later, he started playing the role he is best known for, that of Charles Lee Ray, a.k.a. Chucky, a serial killer who uses voodoo to transfer his soul into the body of a doll. Dourif is now 74 years old, so when we hear that he has decided to retire from acting, it’s totally understandable… but while talking about his retirement, Dourif has also made sure to assure fans that his days of Chucky are not over. He will still continue to work on any Chucky projects that might come up.

Chucky creator Don Mancini has offered an exciting update regarding the future of the beloved horror icon's television series. Despite plans to bring the horror franchise back to the big screen, Mancini has confirmed that he has pitched a fourth season of Chucky to Syfy and USA Network.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Mancini talked about his hopes for a Chucky-verse, with the forthcoming movie airing alongside a potential fourth season of the television series. "[The show and the movie working] in tandem is my hope. We’re hoping to get a season 4 of the show. Fingers crossed," Mancini shared. Jennifer Tilly wants to continue playing Tiffany indefinitely. The possibility of a Chucky movie set in space opens up new avenues for the horror series. Future Child's Play movies will connect to the TV show.
Chucky and Child's Play actress Jennifer Tilly has given her views on her character Tiffany potentially returning to the popular horror series. Created by Don Mancini, the Child's Play franchise began with the 1988 film Child's Play, which focused on a young boy who comes into possession of a murderous doll possessed by the spirit of a serial killer. The franchise has become highly successful, and to date, there have been a total of eight Child's Play movies, including the 2019 reboot, as well as three seasons of the spin-off TV show Chucky, which debuted in 2021.

Everyone’s favorite killer doll is headed back to the small screen with “Chucky” Season 3: Part 2 on April 10, but are any further movies being planned at this time?
Created by Don Mancini, the “Chucky” television series remarkably plays around with existing elements from all previous films without disregarding Anything from the past. From the original Child’s Play to sequels including Child’s Play 2, Bride of Chucky and even Seed of Chucky, it’s all one cohesive timeline that Mancini remains deeply committed to.
Of course, the most recent film in the Child’s Play franchise was the 2019 remake, to date the only movie in the saga that’s Not part of Mancini’s vision. Is Mancini’s original incarnation going to spend his final days on TV, while another Chucky will be featured in the movies? It’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves for the last few years,...

In November of 1993, writer/director John Lafia (Child’s Play 2) unleashed Cujo Cocaine Bear (great punk band name) upon the world with Man’s Best Friend. In the movie, a Tibetan Mastiff named Max 3000 is released from a genetic research facility by a reporter named Lori (Breakfast Club’s Ally Sheedy) while trying to expose a company for their cruel experiments on animals. We eventually learn that while Max might look like the best boy ever, he has a lot more in common with Wesley Snipes’ Simon Phoenix character from Demolition Man than he does Lassie.
While in the lab’s care, Max has been experimented on and genetically enhanced with the DNA of a slew of dangerous animals. For example, if threatened he can camouflage himself with the colors of your garage and hide there like a chameleon before deciding to pop out and bite your dick off. He has super strength,...

Tom Holland's 1988 film "Child's Play" was initially meant to be a satire of the commercial madness that swept the world when Cabbage Patch Kids proliferated through the marketplace a few years before. What if, "Child's Play" asked, the soul of a vicious serial killer possessed your ultra-hot Christmas toy? The result was a genuinely creepy supernatural thriller about a young boy named Andy (Alex Vincent) his single mom (Catherine Hicks) and the mysterious Good Guy doll who likely contains the personality of Charles Lee "Chucky" Ray (Brad Dourif), known to the police as the Lakeshore Strangler.
Like many of the slasher films of the 1980s, "Child's Play" was extensively sequelized. The mythos of Chucky the killer doll expanded, leading to strange byzantine rules of voodoo magic (Chucky uses a magical amulet and magic spells to shunt his soul into a doll body), as well as inter-doll mating, and a lot of queerness.

Slasher films have birthed some of the most iconic characters in film history, with the success of characters like Jason, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers serving as mascot representations of the horror genre. While each of those characters are all worth celebrating for their contributions to the genre, many of them have failed to maintain their legacy over the years. Most slasher icons have faded from the modern film landscape after being buried by a series of terrible sequels and soulless remakes. However, there is one slasher icon who, while not quite as famous, has managed to maintain his relevancy since the '80s: Chucky.
Through a series of different, but weirdly consistent, films, and now a wildly successful TV show, Chucky has managed to outlast all of his slasher rivals to become the king of the genre. This is mostly thanks to the vision of his creator, Don Mancini,...

Chucky the killer doll has come back a whole lot of times since we first saw him in the 1988 classic Child’s Play. He has starred in several big screen sequels, a couple direct-to-video sequels, and now he’s three seasons deep into a TV series that runs on both Syfy and USA Network (as well as the Peacock streaming service). As he has made his way through the decades, many of his co-stars have also returned to share the screen with him again and again. But among those who haven’t returned is Chris Sarandon, who played Detective Mike Norris in the original film. During an interview conducted by People to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the original Child’s Play, Sarandon revealed that he would be willing to come back for another Chucky project… even though he turned down the chance to appear in Child’s Play 2.

Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Chucky is the iconic slasher villain and the main reason viewers keep coming back for more of the Child's Play franchise. The franchise follows a consistent storyline that begins with the original 1988 Child's Play movie. The Chucky TV show spinoff expands the franchise's plot, bringing back old characters and maintaining Chucky as the central villain.
The Child’s Play franchise has a lot of movies and a successful spinoff series, creating questions about the viewing order of Chucky's slasher series. Ever since 1988’s Child’s Play introduced viewers to Chucky, the character has been an iconic slasher villain. Chucky is a doll possessed by the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray. Played with gravelly-voiced panache by Brad Dourif, the killer doll is both the villain and arguably the antihero of the Child’s Play franchise.

Has there ever been a more hypable roster of haunted houses to grace Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights? I don't mean to spew hyperbole; that's a genuine question. Maybe it's my specific horror taste showing. I adored "Evil Dead Rise," have a soft spot for holiday-themed horror, consider Chucky my favorite slasher icon, and think the world of "The Last of Us" as both a game and a series. Anticipation came easier than usual for this year's Horror Nights event, especially with a side quest to score one of 2023's signature voice-activated Chucky popcorn buckets.

The Child's Play franchise introduced a new type of slasher that was unlike anything seen before. In the past, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees introduced the idea that an effective killer needed strength and drive to properly kill a victim. Years later, Freddy Krueger appeared and showed that strength was nothing compared to the supernatural ability to invade a victim's dreams. Through fear, anything could be achieved, and while these killers proved that, Child's Play showed that there was another option. Through voodoo, a killer transferred his soul into a doll and began taking lives in hopes of finding a body he could live in.
The body chosen was a young boy named Andy Barclay, who became the focal point of the Child's Play trilogy as he was forced to endure the violent truths of life thanks to Chucky's actions. To make matters worse, many believed Andy was the killer...

A horror film that took the internet by storm, Barbarian is one of those few films that work best when you know as little as possible going into it. It may be a bit harder to do that nowadays, but it's still a chilling experience regardless.
