C.H.U.D. II: Bud the C.H.U.D. (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The first C.H.U.D became a culturally relevant movie for multiple reasons and against all odds also worked its way into the greater pop culture zeitgeist. I argued that the first movie doesn’t quite stand the test of time a bit ago and while I stand by that, it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it either. C.H.U.D. Its also a better sequel in a franchise that it doesn’t technically exist in! Can’t wait to get into that aspect. Most of you love C.H.U.D. but I’m here to tell you why C.H.U.D. II is a great black sheep that straddles the end of the 80s and start to the 90s. I doubt I’ll sway anyone onto my side of...

His death was announced by family on his Facebook page. Bill Burr’s Rumored Hulu Payday Might Be the Turning Point in the Stand-Up Streaming Wars
Image
From an outsider’s perspective, it sure didn’t seem like Bill Burr, with his seven stand-up specials, animated sitcom and feature film screenwriting debut all produced and/or platformed by Netflix, had any reason at all to hitch his career to a different streamer’s wagon. Then Hulu (reportedly) gave him 15 million of them.

By the time Burr filmed his first Netflix original stand-up special, Walk Your Way Out, in 2017, the streaming giant had already overtaken HBO as the stand-up kingmakers of the comedy world beyond basic cable. Burr would go on to shoot three more Netflix originals and license three others to the streamer, and he would soon launch his series F Is for Family and his kids-these-days comedy film Old Dads with the bright red N for New Kids on the Comedy Block.

But Burr was far from the only stand-up A-lister to make Netflix his new home.

Why Is Everyone Beefing With Drake?
Image
On the night of April 13, after the apparent leak of his diss track “Push Ups (Drop & Give Me Fifty),” Drake posted a screenshot from the movie Kill Bill on his Instagram Story. It was the film’s iconic fight scene, during which Uma Thurman’s character takes on a room full of ninja assassins only to emerge victorious. The metaphor couldn’t be more applicable to Drake’s current situation, as he fends off what many are describing as “Rap’s Avengers,” out for blood since the release of Future...

What Happened to Frank Darabont?
Image
Many people would claim that Frank Darabont has made the best Stephen King adaptations ever put on film, but did you know that over a decade before making The Shawshank Redemption, it would be Stephen King himself who helped Frank Darabont become a filmmaker? Frank would use one of Stephen King’s infamous “Dollar Babies” where King would allow aspiring filmmakers to license one of his short stories for just $1. Darabont would adapt King’s short The Woman in the Room which would be short-listed for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short film in 1983. Despite not getting the nomination, and not even particularly liking the short, King was a fan and for $5,000, granted Darabont the rights to adapt another of his short stories: Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption.

Of course, Darabont wasn’t quite ready to tackle something as massive as that story just yet, so he made...

Make Your Wish: Robert Kurtzman’s ‘Wishmaster’ Is Just as Fun, Fearless and Frightening 26 Years Later
Image
The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.

Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

Wtf Happened to The Majestic?
Image
The year was 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, many studios struggled to find the proper way to market and release their films while still being sensitive to what had just happened. Many films were moved off their original release dates to give the studios, and audiences, more time to figure out the proper way forward. One film, however, was deemed a slam dunk: a feel good story about a man who loses his memory and is taken in by the people of a small town when they assume him to be a long lost son and World War II hero, set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Communist witch hunt of the 1950’s from a respected Oscar nominated filmmaker and starring a lead actor who was in the midst of a dramatic left turn in his career with back to back Golden Globe wins for Best Actor.

R.I.P.: A Nightmare on Elm Street cinematographer Jacques Haitkin has passed away
Image
As the beginning of his IMDb bio states, “Every horror film buff will recognize the name Jacques Haitkin.” Haitkin was the cinematographer on one of the most popular horror movies ever made, the 1984 Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street (watch it Here). And while Craven didn’t return to the helm for A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Haitkin did return to be the cinematographer on that sequel. Sadly, we have to share the news today that Jacques Haitkin is no longer with us. This news was broken on the Facebook account of filmmaker Tony Randel, who is best known for directing Hellbound: Hellraiser II and worked with Haitkin on Galaxy of Terror, Ticks, Fist of the North Star, Rattled, One Good Turn, and Assignment Berlin.

Randel posted, “I knew Jacques Haitkin practically my entire career. We met on a Roger Corman horror/sci-fi epic – Galaxy of Terror.

‘Ghost Town’ Review
Image
Stars: Owen Conway, Robert Sprayberry, Becky Jo Harris, Charlie E Motley, Eva Hamilton, Stephen Moran, Dan Higgins | Written and Directed by Owen Conway

Ghost Town takes place in a boomtown gone bust and involves prostitutes. But that’s where the similarities end, rather than a drama this is a horror film about what seems to be a rather literal ghost town.

Solomon is a drifter in dire straights. His horse has died, he’s out of money and his gun has gone missing. Luckily for him, there’s a town visible in the distance, and a job working for Hagan the owner of the local saloon and whorehouse. He’s not five minutes into the job when one of the customers is shot dead while they’re talking to him.

As if that and having an “insufferable prick”, as one of the girls calls him, for a boss wasn’t...
