Mia Farrow in Alice (1990)

FAQ

Alice

FAQ

Alice is based on a script by American film-maker Woody Allen.

Alice Tate (Mia Farrow) is a rich New York socialite who is bored with her life and her husband Doug (William Hurt), and she's started to develop a pain in her back. She goes to see a well-recommended Chinese acupuncturist, Dr Yang (Keye Luke), who hypnotizes her in order to gain some understanding of what is troubling her and then places her on a regimen of herbs that have magical effects, like making her invisible and causing every man in the room to fall in love with her. When she falls in love with a sax player named Joe Ruffalo (Joe Mantegna), she faces the problem of choosing between Doug and Joe ...or maybe choosing neither.

It is generally called a hypnosis spiral or a hypnotic spiral. They can be used by practitioners to put patients into hypnotic trances or by individuals themselves to induce self-hypnosis.

In a voiceover, it is explained that Alice left Doug and flew to Calcutta, India to meet Mother Teresa. She returned to New York to do volunteer work. She took a modest downtown apartment, does everything herself with no maid, and spends all of her time with her children. As Alice plays with her children on the swings, the voiceover goes on to say Gloria Phillips had facework and is having an affair with her astrologer.
