Trivia

Going Places

Edit
Displaced, then led to the cancellation of, the popular family sitcom "Just the Ten of Us", which had been a TGIF staple since 1988. ABC had decided they wanted a more-adult show as a lead-in for their 10 PM Friday night news program "20/20" and felt that "Going Places" would attract more adult viewers. Nevertheless the show was a critical and ratings failure, while reruns of "Just the 10...." performed extremely well on the USA network. This led ABC to publicly comment, in the spring of 1991, that it had been a mistake to cancel "Just the Ten of Us."
After the show was canceled, Staci Keenan continued to act in the TGIF lineup. She became a main cast member on "Step by Step", which premiered the following fall and lasted 7 seasons, and she appeared in every episode.
Alan Ruck credited this show with helping his post-"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" career. Ruck had been cast in a pilot called "Morton's by the Bay", which didn't make it past the pilot stage. With a young family to support and no other marketable job skills, Ruck had to go to an employment agency that had him working at a Sears warehouse for minimum wage. Coworkers would tell Ruck that he reminded them of Cameron Frye and Ruck, not wanting to avoid the humiliation of being the actor in that movie to now working in a warehouse, denied it and kept a low profile. Ruck was eventually cast in this series, as the producers were fans of his work, and he was able to buy a house and have a steady income to support his family.
Alan Ruck and Heather Locklear ended up working together on "Spin City" a few years after "Going Places" was canceled.
