The past decade has made anime streaming more popular than ever, with many streaming platforms coming out on top in the race to host the next hit. Netflix is still the biggest name in the game when it comes to streaming as a whole, while the Crunchyroll streaming service is the premiere home for anime specifically. While these host some great anime, one shopping network's streaming service has its own fair share of the medium's greats.

Exclusive: Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Nick Stahl (Let the Right One In) and India Marie Cross (Wicked City) will star alongside Caleb Landry Jones in Down the Arm of God, an indie drama co-written by Jones and Peter Brunner, which is being introduced at EFM by Kinology.
Inspired by real stories, Down the Arm of God follows a young pastor through a harsh winter in a small Texas town, where his mission to help the homeless is faced with resistance by his congregation, exposing deep-seated prejudices and systemic failures.
Directed by Brunner, the film is rooted in real-life interviews and firsthand accounts of homeless individuals surviving on the streets. More than just a narrative about homelessness, Down the Arm of God is the result of years of direct collaboration with the homeless community — not just as subjects, but as partners and storytellers shaping the film with their lived experiences.

Exclusive: Bill Kaulitz has swapped the concert stage for the big screen by landing his first film role.
The Tokio Hotel frontman, whose band is among Germany’s most successful music acts, has landed a role in Brute 1986, an indie pic inspired by 1980s slasher movies.
In the film, Leather Kobra, a Sunset Strip-style glam metal band films a music video in an abandoned Western town in the middle of nowhere. Ignoring ‘no trespassing’ signs, the rebellious group have no idea they are being watched by the Birdy family, who will meet them with a “level of brutality that is as vicious as it is creative,” according to producers.
Starring alongside Kaulitz are Gigi Gustin (Stiletto), Sarah French (Blind), Pancho Moler (3 From Hell), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Heather Grace Hancock (Wicked City) and Dazelle Yvette (Garden of Eden).

From gory slashers to petrifying psychological thrillers, horror has always been an incredibly prolific and prominent genre across mediums - one rich in subgenres and themes that have, over time, become staples of fiction. Zombies are a beloved archetype in horror and survival media, and the face of these undead flesh-eating monsters in Western TV is, undoubtedly, The Walking Dead franchise.
A tense survival narrative that mixes poignant drama with bloody post-apocalyptic horror, The Walking Dead was a turning point for the zombie trope in pop culture, rejuvenating fans’ interest in the theme and keeping it alive for over a decade. In anime, classic zombies are far less common. The horror anime genre, however, is rich with blood-curdling monster stories that might be even more frightening than the iconic Walkers.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations list included one significant omission. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez was left off the nonprofit advocacy group’s list of “303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.”
The snub further illustrates the disconnect between LGBTQ media and the entertainment industry over the controversial crime musical from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emilia Pérez is widely predicted to receive several Oscar nominations on Thursday. The movie could set multiple Academy Awards records, including the most nominations ever for an international film and the most nominations for any film. The film’s star, Karla Sofia Gascón, is also predicted to make history as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress. If you happened to catch Misery Signals on their farewell tour, first of all I am extremely jealous. Not just because you got to see one of the most influential metalcore bands of all time, but you also got to see one of the best up and coming metalcore bands around, Trench. Trench brings the heavy and dark, and it may not be a surprise to learn how much of that is influenced, whether directly or indirectly, by the anime they watched growing up and still watch to this day. I chatted with vocalist Jay Breen about anime and how they were able to bring their influences to life in the video for “Divided Between New Skin.” Can you tell me a little about your anime journey? How it started and where you are now? Are there genres you gravitate toward? What is your favorite anime series or movie of all time?...

Anime is one of Japan's biggest and most popular exports. The unique animation style has allowed multiple directors to push boundaries and craft ambitious narratives that appeal to various audiences. By far, the most groundbreaking anime title to make a sizable impact in the United States was Akira, released in 1988. The release of Akira would help pave the way for other successful anime films such as Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, and the Evangelion series. Akira combined elements of body horror and cyberpunk in a modernized version of Tokyo that enthralled many audiences, particularly those who had flocked to see other notable tech-noir features such as Blade Runner and Terminator.

Even before the anime adaptation was announced, Uzumaki has been widely praised as one of the best works by mangaka Junji Ito. Featuring a cursed town besieged by a strange spiral design, the story of the manga showcases unrelenting terror and creepiness. More than most attempts at a scary manga or anime, however, Uzumaki mainly excels at inhuman body horror.
Junji Ito himself is known for body horror, with most of his works using this concept to unnerve readers and the relationships with their own human forms. This is used to grievous effect in the Uzumaki manga and anime, with the spiral's curse seeing its victims lose control of their own agency. Sadly, the new anime adaptation falters a bit in this regard, but it still showcases just why the Ito story has been so widely regarded in the fear factor department, especially compared to how sanitized anime as a whole has become.

Adult Swim is currently gearing up for the worldwide premiere of Uzumaki -- a black-and-white anime adaptation of Junji Ito's iconic horror manga. According to Uzumaki director Hiroshi Nagahama, the upcoming series faithfully tributes Ito's haunting story despite of utilizing a medium that, generally speaking, "isn't suited for horror."
In a recent interview conducted by Anime News Network at Otakon 2024, Nagahama takes a somewhat surprising stance when asked about an apparent lack of audience interest in horror anime. "It's not that [horror anime] isn't trendy, but when it's drawn by a human hand and done in the medium of anime, it makes it more obvious that it's fiction and that its not taking place, so I don't think it's very suited for horror," Nagahama explained. With this in mind, the director and his team used stylized animation techniques to recreate Uzumaki's terrifying universe.

Anime is more popular than ever, with the late 2010s and early 2020s seeing widespread success for the medium. This is not only in Japan, but the world over. While the modern day may have raised the stakes for anime as a whole, some of the best examples of what the medium has to offer were released in the 1980s and 1990s.
Various retro anime OVAs took the concept of animation to its limit, reveling in breathtaking animation and experimental storytelling. 1980s Japanese horror movies pushed boundaries by blending ordinary life with daunting experiences, setting the bar for future films. Experimental classics like Evil Dead Trap and Wicked City inspired the evolution of j-horror, mixing horror with sci-fi and fantasy. Films like Battle Heater and Cyclops offered bizarre, yet captivating horror experiences, challenging traditional tropes for a lasting impact.
When discussing Japanese horror movies, fans often bring up the late '90s to early 2000s classics like Ju-on: The Grudge or Audition. Decades earlier, in the '80s, the genre was starting to become more experimental, ultimately leading it to evolve and inspire what we today know as a more customary movie subgenre, j-horror.
During the 1980s, Japan impacted audiences by taking people's ordinary lives and twisting them into daunting experiences. Directors took a liking to giving the impression that this could happen to anyone, making it both relatable and anxiety-inducing.

Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- begins with a kinetic display of carnage where its main character bursts into flames and careens down a skyscraper like a rogue pinball. It’s a violent, chaotic way to begin this vampire tale that feels all-too thematically appropriate for its conflicted hero, Koyomi Araragi, who gets pulled in extreme directions as he struggles to gain control of his life. It’s not dissimilar to the madness that the audience experiences as Koyomi Vamp’s aggressive storytelling grabs hold of them and doesn’t let go for two-and-a-half hours.
Anime is dense in groundbreaking and foundational vampire texts, whether it’s Vampire Hunter D, Blood: The Last Vampire, Hellsing, or even absurdly violent monster titles like Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku. However, Kizunonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- clears them all. There’s a strong case to be made that Koyomi Vamp is not just one of the best anime vampire movies of all-time,...

Hideyuki Kikuchi's horror anime delves into Japanese myths and legends beyond traditional Western concepts. Kikuchi's work, like Vampire Hunter D, influences modern anime such as Tokyo Ghoul and the Shin Megami Tensei video game series. The master of science fiction horror continues to craft tales blending action, suspense, and eroticism in iconic classics.
Whispering fields of ghostly pampas grass. Gargantuan skeletons slaking their thirst for hot human blood. Unrestful dead haunting those foolish enough to enter their desecrated domains. Japanese horror is a horse of an entirely other color when compared to Western concepts and tropes. The ethereal yurei, the monstrous bakemono, and the possessed tsukumogami, along with the countless shapes, entities, and forms they can assume, all populate Japan’s myths and legends. In 1987, Yoshiaki Kawajiri released one of the most seminal anime ever in “Wicked City,” a celebrated tale of the fragile existence between humans and demons, featuring a series of imaginative concepts to enhance a spectacular storyline. [This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] How well do you know Jeremy Sisto‘s TV and film characters? Is it as well or perhaps better than he does? When Sisto stopped by TV Insider’s office in the spring (ahead of the FBI–Most Wanted–International crossover event and before the actors’ strike), we not only had to have him dish on his costars and recall his audition for Clueless, but also test his knowledge of his own characters. What makes it tricky is that Sisto has played law enforcement characters on at least three shows — Detective Jack Roth on Wicked City, Detective Cyrus Lupo on Law & Order, and currently Assistant Special Agent Jubal Valentine on FBI (returning for its sixth season on CBS) — and so some of those quotes are very similar … and therefore not the easiest for Sisto to answer. But his characters elsewhere, like in Clueless and on...

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, there were numerous anime OVAs (original video animation) that told grisly, gritty, and grimy stories. Full of blood, guts, gore, and all manner of other "adult" content, these projects were instrumental in positioning anime as the "grown-up" cartoon alternative in the West. Some of these Ova movies and TV shows were based on manga, though in some cases, this source material was never actually completed.
A great example of this was Genocyber, which is a somewhat infamous science fiction horror anime. As with others of its era, this Ova was premier "late nite" fare, namely due to its graphic content. It's also defined solely by its adaptation, with the actual manga that the series is based on still being incomplete to this day.

The classic Sailor Moon anime has two hundred episodes plus several movies with encapsulated story arcs. So much content means that there are a vast amount of characters that come and go, sometimes for just an episode or a couple short cameos. They tend to be minor villains or talented humans targeted by eldritch entities like the Dark Kingdom.
Sailor Moon's filler episodes have fun and interesting plot arcs with characters that are unique, if short-lived. Even the minor characters tend to have intriguing powers, story lines, and character design. They're iconic, even if they aren't featured beyond an episode or two.

With the exception of genre masters like Junji Ito, anime and manga aren’t exactly the most horror-friendly mediums out there. However, from the Cenobite-inspired God Hand of Berserk to the near-Lovecraftian archeology of Made in Abyss, there’s no denying that Japanese artists often manage to sneak in some unexpected scares into their work.
And with decades of Japanese animation to choose from, there are bound to be at least a few oddball productions likely to satisfy audiences with a craving for animated frights. With that in mind, we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six of the best anime for horror fans, as not all nightmares have to be in live-action!
While this list is obviously based on personal opinion, we’ll only be considering Japanese productions as proper “anime,” which means no Western animations like Netflix’s Castlevania! With that out of the way,...
