Andy Samberg and Jason Momoa is the Netflix film we didn't know we needed
Image
Jason Momoa might seem like a wrestler, but he isn't. The problem is he has the size of Dewayne Johnson and John Cena, and might seem like one of the actors of that ilk, but he is much more experienced as an actor than those former wrestlers could ever be.

Still, it's easy to only see Momoa as an action star and nothing else. He is capable of drama, but lately has been full-bore into comedy. He's good at it. Opposite Jack Black in Minecraft, Momoa is the kind of goof that is needed for the role.

Andy Samberg has always been the goof we needed in most of his comedic roles, but the trick is, like Adam Sandler, he is smarter than he might seem. That translates on the screen even when we laugh at the silly things he might do.

Netflix Wins Bidding War for Action Comedy Uniting Jason Momoa and Andy Samberg
Image
Jason Momoa and Andy Samberg are making a movie for Netflix. The streamer has emerged victorious from a recent bidding war for an untitled action comedy starring the two fan-favorite actors.

According to Deadline, multiple studios and streamers were trying to land the untitled two-hander action comedy, with Netflix ultimately having the best offer. While plot details remain heavily under wraps, it has been divulged that the movie will be set in Momoa's native Hawaii. Samberg’s Party Over Here and Momoa’s On The Roam will produce the movie, which marks the first time the actors have worked together. The script will be written by Emmy-nominated Saturday Night Live alums Rob Klein and John Solomon. No director is attached at this time.

Momoa is best known for playing the DC Extended Universe superhero Aquaman in multiple movies, including two solo films released in 2018 and 2023. His other notable film credits...

Andy Samberg and Jason Momoa are joining forces for an action comedy film at Netflix
Jack Black
After building a rock-solid franchise foundation alongside Jack Black in A Minecraft Movie, Jason Momoa will join forces with Andy Samberg for an untitled action comedy film at Netflix. Details about the project remain scarce, though Deadline says the film’s events unfold in Hawaii.

In addition to starring in the movie, Andy Samberg’s Party Over Here and Jason Momoa’s On the Roam studios will produce. The untitled action comedy does not have a director yet. However, 11x Emmy nominee Rob Klein and eight-time nominee John Solomon are writing the script.

After showing off his dramatic chops as Davy Scherman in the Ellen Kuras-directed docudrama Lee, starring Kate Winslet as war correspondent Lee Miller, Andy Samberg wrapped production on The Roses, a dark comedy about what happens when a tinderbox of competition and resentments underneath the façade of a picture-perfect couple ignites. The Roses is the second...

Everything Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in June
Image
While the Max rebrand back to HBO Max has the streaming world in a tizzy, it’s worth remembering the significance of keeping diverse subscriptions. While “Hacks” and “The Last of Us” wrap up over on that side of your library, the Hulu and Disney bundle is essential for maximizing this summer’s offerings.

Disney+ continues to be the go-to streamer for family friendly viewing options; this month, they’ll add the official “Frozen” Broadway musical to that library, along with Marvel’s “Ironheart,” about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Hulu has everything you need for an “Alien” movie marathon, all to gear up for FX’s “Alien: Earth” which premieres in August. You could also do a “Mamma Mia!” marathon or “Bachelor” binge — we’re not here to judge.

Top Pick: “The Bear” Season 4 (Available on Hulu)

Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Zoë Chao, Sunita Mani, Jamie Demetriou, and Ncuti Gatwa in The Roses (2025)
The Roses | Trailer lands for the comedy remake
Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, Zoë Chao, Sunita Mani, Jamie Demetriou, and Ncuti Gatwa in The Roses (2025)
Upcoming comedy The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as a warring couple, arrives in August. Have a trailer:

On paper, everything about Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses looks to be in order. You get Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as the unhappy couple, delivering withering put-downs in a steadily escalating conflict that gets rather out of hand.

Plus, it has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara. This doesn’t look like it will have the frisson of the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, though. The original War Of The Roses was a continuation of the chemistry the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and the following year’s sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile.

Who won CinemaCon: ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ ‘Project Hail Mary,’ and the year’s most delightful surprise
Image
The annual trade show hosted by Cinema United, CinemaCon is where the nation’s theater owners spend a week listening to sales pitches from Hollywood’s most important people: studio executives, Oscar-winning filmmakers, and Tom Cruise. Here are the standout moments, trailer, and highs and lows from CineamaCon 2025.

Most Important Movie

CinemaCon closed with a flourish on Thursday night, with a first look at Avatar: Fire and Ash, James Cameron’s forthcoming blockbuster. In some ways, the preview — with its exceptional visuals and pacing typical of an Avatar film — felt like a Brigadoon for the nation’s theater owners and its studio partners. This year’s CinemaCon was marked by notable unease for the motion picture industry, with sagging box office totals sparking debate about theatrical windows and the future of several studio executives uncertain. Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman Go to Battle in Raunchy Trailer for ‘War of the Roses’ Remake
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman have a not-so-cordial split in the first trailer for The Roses, the forthcoming remake of The War of the Roses.

Jay Roach directed the new movie from a script by Tony McNamara. Hitting theaters Aug. 29 from Searchlight Pictures, the project’s cast includes Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow and Kate McKinnon.

The ribald footage shared at CinemaCon shows Cumberbatch and Colman as a happy couple who quickly fall apart — and seem to have fun doing just that. “I suppose sometimes I do hate you,” Cumberbatch says to Colman in the trailer before clarifying, “Sporadic hatred.”

As things sour, Colman’s character quips about her hubby, “Sometimes he’s got his cock in me, and I can’t really tell.” Soon, Cumberbatch gets an unwelcome surprise while he’s soaking in the bath tub.

Toward the end of the trailer,...

Chad Michael Murray returns, and the preview includes a funny scene of Lindsay aggressively flirting with him. Murray is actually into Curtis, which could cause some delicious drama among the group. Freakier Friday looks like a crowd-pleaser, and we’re excited to see more when the movie comes to theaters...

Road Show | The unlikely Sean Connery and Cher team-up that never happened
Image
In the early 1990s, Sean Connery and Cher almost appeared together in a romantic adventure called Road Show. Here’s why it never got made:

The ending of this story is that the movie never happened. Sean Connery and Cher never came together in a feature film from the director of Die Hard, and if you follow their respective IMDb pages, you’ll know their streams never crossed.

But for time in the early 1990s, it nearly happened. The project that nearly brought them together sounds as unlikely now as the cast list.

For over a decade, a script called Road Show was doing the rounds among Hollywood studios. A romantic action-adventure set in and around a ranch, it was in turn based on a book called The Last Cattle Drive, penned by Robert Day, and it moved onto the docket of director John McTiernan just after he’d enjoyed...

Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) and BAFTA and Emmy winner Benedict Cumberbatch are set to star in The Roses, which, per Variety, has an official release date of Aug. 29.

Benedict Cumberbatch's 'The War of the Roses' Remake Lands Summer Release
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch remains as busy as ever these days, with no less than three movies premiering in 2025. There's a drama (The Thing with Feathers), an espionage thriller (The Phoenician Scheme), and a remake of the '80s classic The War of the Roses, which has now set a summer release date. Simply titled The Roses, Cumberbatch stars in the film alongside Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman, with the duo playing a married couple whose life seems picture-perfect on the surface, but underneath is anything but.

Per Searchlight Pictures, The Roses will hit theaters on August 29, 2025, the same day as the long-awaited remake of The Toxic Avenger. Directed by Danny DeVito and based on the novel by Warren Adler, the original The War of the Roses starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner debuted all the way back in 1989, and earned each of its two stars a Golden Globe nomination. This new adaptation...

War of the Roses (2024)
Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch War Of The Roses remake lands August
War of the Roses (2024)
The Roses is a remake of War Of The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s arriving this very summer.

While we often roll our eyes at Hollywood’s lack of originality and continued reliance on remakes, we’re looking forward to Fox Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses.

It has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara, who imbued both of those films humour that ranged from slapstick to biting to outright shocking.

Also, this is an anglicised take on the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in a continuation of the love-hate onscreen pairing the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and its sequel, 1985’s The Jewel Of The Nile.

Olivia Colman is ready to bring the ultimate marital meltdown to life in The Roses, a new and updated — and "quite different" — take on the classic dark comedy The War of the Roses, and she can't wait for audiences to see it. Directed by Jay Roach and written by Tony McNamara, the film is set to reimagine the brutal, hilarious battle between a divorcing couple who refuse to back down from each other and try to make their lives a living misery. Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals His Vulgar Reaction to Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom Casting
Image
Though it's been six months since the confirmation of Robert Downey Jr.'s Marvel Cinematic Universe return, many remain shocked that the Tony Stark/Iron Man actor opted to return as the villainous Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. One fellow MCU star is among the onlookers stunned by the development, as Doctor Strange franchise star Benedict Cumberbatch shares his Nsfw reaction to the move.

During an interview with Variety, Cumberbatch revealed he found out about Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom casting like most people, live during the final reveal at last summer's San Diego Comic-Con. When he saw Downey Jr. remove the famous Victor von Doom mask to reveal he was playing the McU's next big bad, Cumberbatch immediately texted three words to Marvel president Kevin Feige. “I texted, ‘What the f**k?’ Cumberbatch said, before adding. ‘Good what-the-f**k. I mean, good what-the-f**k.’”

Benedict Cumberbatch Tells All on Doctor Strange’s Future, His New Sundance Film and Not Being Your Typical Movie Star: ‘I’m Not Brad, I’m Not Leo’
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t like to overshare, but sometimes he just can’t help himself.

Take the two hours we spend on a recent London afternoon discussing his new film, “The Thing With Feathers,” a dark drama about a father struggling to hold his family together after his wife dies suddenly. While the film paints an unvarnished portrait of a man in crisis, Cumberbatch feels awkward talking about how he channeled that kind of soul-eviscerating grief on-screen. “The Brit in me is a bit embarrassed about diving too deeply into what I do,” he admits.

There’s a polite reserve to Cumberbatch, as well as a discomfort with the trappings of stardom. Still, there are moments when his guard drops and suddenly he’s telling all. Cumberbatch is best known for playing Doctor Strange, the brilliant but arrogant Sorcerer Supreme in six Marvel movies. It’s the role that gave...

'A Joy to Make': Benedict Cumberbatch Teases His Remake of 35-Year-Old Danny DeVito Film
Image
Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has teased his upcoming remake of Danny DeVito's beloved 35-year-old satirical black comedy-drama film The War of Roses, calling it "a joy to make." Announced earlier this year, Cumberbatch's The Roses is directed by Jay Roach and also stars MCU alum Olivia Colman.

Per Variety, Cumberbatch discussed The Roses and his other upcoming projects at the Red Sea Film Festival. The actor stated that the movie had "pretty cool ingredients" in his "amazing" co-star Colman and Tony McNamara's "great script." The War of the Roses reimagining will mark Cumberbatch's first role as the lead in a comedy, and he has found the experience gratifying. "We'll see if it'll get there, but it was a joy to make," he said. Produced by Searchlight Pictures, the movie's cast includes Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, and Belinda Bromilow.

Benedict Cumberbatch Says ‘There Is a Lot More to Play’ With Doctor Strange and That He Had to ‘Work Hard’ Not to Have ‘Arrogance’ About Marvel Success
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch is far from done with playing Doctor Strange. The actor, who is at the Red Sea Film Festival with “We Live in Time” — produced by his company SunnyMarch — called the superhero a “complex man motivated by a need to control everything at any cost.” “I am interested in seeing where these costs take him,” he said. “There is a lot more to play and it’s very exciting.”

The actor also briefly touched upon his upcoming film with Wes Anderson, “The Phoenician Scheme,” saying that it was a different experience from their previous collaboration in “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” in that “this was just character” instead of stepping into a meta-narrative based on pre-existing literary work. Of Jay Roach’s “The Roses,” Cumberbatch said the film had “pretty cool ingredients” in “amazing” Olivia Colman and a “great script” by Yorgos Lanthimos’s frequent collaborator Tony McNamara.

Emmy-and-Golden Globe winning actor. Oscar-nominated producer. Director. Writer. In his 50 years in the industry, Danny DeVito has worn many hats, becoming one of the most successful and popular entertainers of his generation.

Daniel Michael DeVito, Jr. was born on November 17, 1944, in New Jersey, with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia. Also known as Fairbank’s disease, this rare genetic disorder affects bone growth and contributed to his short stature. This has not hindered his successes, beginning with his training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and early work in the theater.

In 1975, DeVito successfully reprised his off-Broadway role in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” in the film version, and soon found success as Louie DePalma in the television sitcom “Taxi,” for which he received four Primetime Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations, winning the Emmy in 1978 and the Globe in 1980. Cumberbatch has been acting in films and TV since 2002, when he appeared in the TV movie, Fields of Gold. However, he had already been appearing in theatrical productions around the UK for several years prior. While his success on TV and film did not take long, with his first major role that elevated his career being in the TV movie Hawking, where he played the late and great scientist, Stephen Hawking, Cumberbatch continued to pursue roles on stage and on the screen.

Searchlight Gets ‘Priced Out’ by Streamers and ‘Can’t Compete’ with Amazon, Netflix, or Apple
Image
Searchlight Pictures would love to work with Emerald Fennell on a future project. But times are tough, even for a distributor owned by Disney (and even with its former boss running the whole operation), and Searchlight gets consistently “priced out” by the deep pocketed streamers.

Katie Goodson-Thomas, the head of international production and development for Searchlight in the UK, was blunt about her specialized-distribution business and the larger competitive marketplace.

“We can’t be competitive with Netflix. It’s just not going to happen…or Apple or Amazon,” she said in a panel discussion at the BFI London Film Festival (via THR).

Goodson-Thomas mentioned Fennell as an example of how Searchlight gets beat out by the streamers and how that “happens on a daily basis — it really does.” The “Saltburn” director is next making an adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” for MRC that will star Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Top Searchlight Exec Says Studio Gets ‘Priced Out’ by Streamers on Daily Basis: ‘We Can’t Be Competitive With Netflix, Apple or Amazon’
Image
Searchlight Pictures’ top international exec Katie Goodson-Thomas has acknowledged the constant battle the specialty studio has against the deep-pockets of streamers when it comes to securing projects.

Speaking at an industry talk at the BFI London Film Festival, Goodson-Thomas, head of international production and development, said that Searchlight being “priced out” by streamers was something “that happens on a daily basis, it really does.”

She added: “But we just can’t be competitive with Netflix of Apple or Amazon.”

Goodson-Thomas pointed to Emerald Fennell — someone she said she’d “love to work with” — and her upcoming “Wuthering Heights” adaptation, a film Searchlight simply wouldn’t have the finances to support. “But I think she’s an extraordinary filmmaker and I want her film to be made so I’m happy for her to go to those people who have the money to finance it,” she said.

But at Searchlight — which...
