‘Weapons’ reloads and ‘Jaws’ makes waves, while ‘Caught Stealing,’ ‘The Roses’ stumble at holiday box office
Image
Update Sept. 2, 2025: The summer box office came to a quiet close over Labor Day weekend as Weapons reclaimed the top spot, slicing up an estimated $12.8 million over the four-day frame. The horror hit has now scared up $135 million domestically and $235 million globally — an impressive haul considering its modest $38 million budget. It also marks another win for Warner Bros., which has been on a roll with hits like A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Final Destination: Bloodlines. Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg’s 50th-anniversary rerelease of Jaws proved its bite still holds power, landing in second place with $9.9 million and pushing its lifetime domestic total to $283.6 million.

Elsewhere, Darren Aronofsky’s action-comedy Caught Stealing,...

Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Tops Sleepy Labor Day Weekend With $12.8 Million, ‘Jaws’ 50th Anniversary Re-Release Beats ‘Caught Stealing,’ ‘The Roses’
Image
Hollywood didn’t have a lot to celebrate during a muted Labor Day holiday weekend, as “Weapons,” now in its fourth weekend of release, took the top spot, and “Jaws,” a 50-year-old blockbuster, beat out two new films, “Caught Stealing” and “The Roses,” that failed to generate much heat.

“Weapons,” which lost its No. 1 position last weekend to Netflix’s “Kpop Demon Hunters,” reclaimed its crown, earning an estimated $12.8 million over the four-day holiday. So far, the horror hit has earned $135 million domestically and $235.2 million globally. That’s an impressive result considering it only cost $38 million to produce. It extends a winning streak for Warner Bros., which has recently fielded successes like “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines,” “F1: The Movie” (which the studio distributed for Apple) and “Superman.” It’s a remarkable comeback for the studio’s chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, who were on the...

‘Weapons’ beats ‘Jaws’ as North American summer box office closes just shy of 2024 on $3.7bn
Image
Late summer breakout Weapons from New Line/Warner Bros added an estimated $12.4m from 3,416 locations and returned to the top after four weekends as a muted Labor Day holiday session closed out the season.

Zach Cregger’s missing schoolchildren horror stands at$134.6m in North America and more than $230m worldwide. It hasbeen a late-arriving star of a season that for a moment some thought would cross $4bn for the first time since Barbie and Oppenheimer powered the summer of 2023.

Not this year. According to Comscore on Sunday morning all combined releases earned an estimated $83m for the weekend. Summer closed on an estimated $3.76bn,...

Weekend Box Office: Weapons and Jaws devour the competition
Image
Another Labor Day weekend is in the books, and as usual, it was a massacre for new releases. This release corridor has long been regarded as a dumping ground for new titles, but this year, studios seemed to be trying something a little different. Two relatively star-studded movies hit theaters: Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing and The Roses. Caught Stealing was very well reviewed (including by us), although most critics found The Roses to be a mediocre remake of the classic Danny DeVito film The War of the Roses. Audiences were lukewarm on both, giving Caught Stealing a B, while The Roses got a B+. Neither made much of a dent at the box office.

Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Returns to No. 1 as ‘Jaws’ 50th Anniversary Re-Release Beats ‘Caught Stealing’ and ‘The Roses’
Image
Box office, welcome to the dog days of summer. In this terribly sluggish Labor Day holiday weekend, a horror movie in its fourth weekend of release was No. 1 while a 50-year-old blockbuster beat out two newcomers.

“Weapons,” after briefly ceding the crown to Netflix’s “Kpop Demon Hunters,” reclaimed the top spot in North America with $10.2 million over the traditional weekend and an estimated $12.4 million through Monday. So far, the scary movie has earned $134.6 million domestically and $250 million globally against a $38 million budget. Zach Cregger’s sleeper success is the latest theatrical winner for Warner Bros., which suffered a rocky start to the year but has since rebounded with hits like “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines,” “F1: The Movie” (which the studio distributed for Apple) and “Superman.”

In second place, a “Jaws” 50th anniversary re-release collected $8.1 million from 3,200 theaters over the weekend and an estimated $9.8 million through Monday.

It earned a decent number on its opening day, registering one of the biggest for the Searchlight studios. It will eventually register a big debut for the studio since its inception. Keep scrolling for more.

Benedict and Olivia’s film is a remake of the 1989 movie, The War of the Roses. The latest film features Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Andy Samberg, and Kate McKinnon in supporting roles. Benedict Cumberbatch Calls ‘The Roses’ a “Date Night Film” Despite Its Dark Themes
Image
Looking for a date night movie? Benedict Cumberbatch has the perfect recommendation.

But it comes with a twist. At the New York premiere of The Roses earlier this week, Cumberbatch told The Hollywood Reporter why his unconventional new comedy film is indeed a solid choice for couples to watch together. “It’s weirdly a date night film. You either go, ‘Oh, it’s never going to be that bad.’ Or you get to laugh at it vicariously, or think, ‘Oh, that that hit home,’ and have a talk about it and make sure it doesn’t go the way it goes for The Roses.”

The Roses is directed by Jay Roach (Bombshell, Austin Powers, Meet the Parents), and based on the novel written by Warren Adler, is a reimagining of the 1989 dark comedy The War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. This time, it follows Cumberbatch’s...

This Danny DeVito Movie Helped Introduce the World to ‘The Simpsons’
Image
Danny DeVito is obviously famous for his many acting roles, from Frank Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, to Martin Weir in Get Shorty, to whoever that guy in the 1970s sex van movie was.

But DeVito is also an accomplished director, having helmed movies like the beloved children’s classic Matilda and the kind of beloved, not-quite-classic Death to Smoochy. Then there was his 1989 black comedy The War of the Roses, which starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a rich couple going through an intense divorce.

The movie was a big hit, which explains why it’s now been remade with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.

But,...

Kpop (2021)
Box Office Update: Jaws is eating the competition on a slow Labor Day weekend
Kpop (2021)
Labor Day weekend is always slow at the box office, and this year is proving to be no exception. With Kpop Demon Hunters no longer playing, Zach Cregger’s Weapons was easily able to retake the top spot (as we predicted earlier this week), with Deadline reporting it will end the weekend with about $12 million.

Second place is proving to be a bit of a surprise, with Jaws’ 50th-anniversary release likely to take second place with about $9.7 million for the four-day weekend. The fact that Steven Spielberg’s 50-year-old classic is easily beating some star-studded newcomers is notable, but truth be told, nothing beats the original Jaws on the big...

Benedict Cumberbatch's Remake Disappoints at Box Office, Trails 36-Year-Old Original
Image
The Roses is set for a disappointing debut. The new comedy movie is an adaptation of Warren Adler's The War of the Roses, which was adapted into a hit movie directed by Danny DeVito in 1989. All three versions of the story follow the exaggeratedly acrimonious divorce between a married couple, the Roses.

2025's The Roses, which was directed by Jay Roach stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as the titular couple, Theo and Ivy. The ensemble cast of the movie also includes Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon, Zoë Chao, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Sunita Mani, and Allison Janney.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, The Roses is projected to end...

Box Office: ‘Caught Stealing’ Grounds Into $3.2 Million Opening Day, ‘Weapons’ Winning Yet Again
Vincent D'Onofrio, Liev Schreiber, Regina King, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Tonic, Matt Smith, Zoë Kravitz, Austin Butler, Nikita Kukushkin, and Bad Bunny in Pris au piège - Caught Stealing (2025)
The debuts of Austin Butler’s crime thriller “Caught Stealing,” Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman’s comedy “The Roses” and an unrated remake of “The Toxic Avenger” all won’t beat out the fourth weekend of “Weapons” for the top spot at the box office, as the summer season officially winds down over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Sony Pictures’ “Caught Stealing” will get closest of those three, popping up with a $3.2 million opening day across Friday and previews from 3,578 locations. The Darren Aronofsky-directed New York noir got a lead off with screenings last Saturday too. It’s now projecting a $9.5 million debut over the four-day holiday frame, coming in short of eight digits. That’s a very muted start for the well-reviewed R-rated original, which carries a $40 million production budget. Audiences are mildly positive, with moviegoer pollster Cinema Score turning in a “B” grade.

Meanwhile, Searchlight Pictures has...

Here's What Separates The Roses From The War Of The Roses, According To The Director [Exclusive]
Image
"The Roses," the new comedy from "Meet the Parents" and "Austin Powers" director Jay Roach, is a bit of a contradiction. On one hand, it's technically a reimagining of Warren Adler's 1981 novel "The War of the Roses," but I suspect most people who know it's based on something will refer to it as a remake of Danny DeVito's 1989 film adaptation of that novel. Reimagining existing intellectual property is the defining strategy of modern Hollywood, and with recognizable stars like Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman in the lead roles and a script from "Poor Things" and "The Favourite" screenwriter Tony McNamara, it makes sense that this new version would get made.

If you are going to remake a movie, the dark comedy The Roses is the way to do it. The dark comedy The Roses proves that there is a right way to do a remake, telling the same story but in a refreshingly different way. With biting British-style humor, Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are the perfect couple, battling or not, in this love story gone wrong.

The Roses Review: Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch in a Hilarious Tale of Marital Disharmony
Image
Moments into The Roses, screenwriter Tony McNamara and Jay Roach’s remake of The War of the Roses, Danny DeVito’s 1989 masterpiece of marital disharmony, the titular characters, Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch), exchange witheringly caustic barbs aimed squarely at each other while their shocked, soon-to-be-ex-therapist gasps in amazement. The newly bewildered therapist declares their marriage null and void, the outcome of almost decades of accreted resentments, but neither Theo nor Ivy accept either her diagnosis or her prognosis, briefly turning their vitriol towards their now ex-therapist. It’s an error in judgment that foreshadows the long, not quite meandering descent of their once happy marriage into a literal.

Movie Review: The Roses
Image
The latest cinematic adaptation of the Warren Adler novel The War of the Roses (1981), entitled simply The Roses, plays less like the bitter descent into mutual self-destruction that the book and director Danny DeVito’s 1989 adaptation that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner depicted, and instead opts for a far more “British” interpretation of the dissolution of marriage that the book examines.

On the surface, life for the Roses – Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) – seems idyllic. They both have successful careers and have raised two wonderful children through love and understanding. But, when the status quo of their union is threatened as Theo’s career falls apart and Ivy’s takes off,...

The Roses: Benedict Cumberbatch Steps Into Dark Comedy As Film Receives Mixed Reactions On Rotten Tomatoes

Benedict Cumberbatch’s The Roses Impresses Critics With Strong Cast & Fresh Take On Classic Story (Photo Credit – Instagram)

The Roses marks a shift in Benedict Cumberbatch’s career, stepping into a dark comedy that pulls him away from the intense and brooding roles that made his name. The Hollywood star, known for mastering the cold intellect of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series from 2010 to 2017, made an early impact and has not slowed since. The role earned him a Primetime Emmy and opened the gates to major film roles where he kept showing his range.

Summer Box Office to End With a Sluggish Labor Day Weekend
Image
Labor Day weekend historically closes the summer box office season on a quiet note, but this weekend will be a particularly sluggish one for theaters as the fourth weekend of Warner Bros./New Line’s “Weapons” may return to the No. 1 spot after the limited engagement of “KPop Demon Hunters” edged it out last weekend.

The new release slate for this upcoming holiday is highlighted by Sony/Columbia’s “Caught Stealing,” a new crime thriller starring Austin Butler and directed by Darren Aronofsky. Next weekend may see more of a boost with the anticipated $35 million-plus opening for another New Line film, “The Conjuring: Last Rites.”

Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Which Sherlock Character Would Be Perfect for Olivia Colman: 'Arthur Conan Doyle Is on Board'
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch has become a household name after his critically acclaimed performances in 2014's The Imitation Game and 2021's The Power of the Dog, which both led to an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, all of those were thanks to BBC's Sherlock.

The mystery series, based on the world-famous detective, aired between 2010 and 2017, and starred Cumberbatch in the titular role, opposite Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. The British crime drama was filled with popular actors, but one was missing: his new co-star from The Roses, Olivia Colman. Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake to promote the...

Jay Roach Singles Out The Holdovers & Ozark Stars as His Bucket List Collaborators

Primetime Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jay Roach returned with a new take on Warren Adler's 1981 novel The War of the Roses. The romance film, titled The Roses, stars a series of brilliant and critically acclaimed actors, led by two-time Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman.

The Roses has a wonderful cast and, throughout his career, the filmmaker worked with many beloved stars, including Mike Myers in all three Austin Powers films, Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents, as well as Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie in 2019's Bombshell, among many others. Talking to Cbr's Grae Drake to promote the upcoming satirical black comedy romance The Roses,...

The Roses Review: A Lukewarm Review of a Classic
Image
Plot: A tinderbox of competition and resentments underneath the façade of a picture-perfect couple is ignited when the husband’s professional dreams come crashing down.

Review: I never read the novel The War of the Roses, but I have always thought fondly of the Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner-starring film from the late 80s. The idea of two people doing battle in the midst of an ugly divorce has always felt ripe for comedy. So I was excited when it was announced that Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch would be taking part in a new adaptation. But rather than a dark comedy about a couple divorcing, it’s mostly...

The original The War Of The Roses was a shock to the system: audiences had just seen stars Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, along with director and supporting cast member Danny DeVito, in the amorous adventures Romancing The Stone and The Jewel Of The Nile. Everyone had certain expectations around happy-ever-afters that DeVito’s biting film refused to meet. Jay Roach’s remake, however, by definition comes with a different set of pressures and without a central cast who have an established history. He has his work cut out to update its story and characters and make us feel any narrative tension as the marital tension ratchets skyward. Luckily, he...

Yes, that C-word, and while it’s universally acknowledged that the term means something far more colloquial and congenial in the United Kingdom than it does on these shores, the British actor makes it sound as obscene as humanly possible. When she utters it through a smile, the epithet somehow seems even worse. (This is admittedly not the first time we’ve praised her ability to turn offensive nouns into something rhapsodical, and it probably won’t be the last.

Why Benedict Cumberbatch Wanted to Play Against Type in the Marriage Comedy ‘The Roses’: ‘I Try to Scare Myself a Little Bit’
Image
Amid crabs, napkin drawings and a star-studded comedic cast, “The Roses,” the new dark comedy film from director Jay Roach and writer Tony McNamara, begs the question: Can the modern couple really have it all?

“Two artists? It’s just incredibly difficult,” Allison Janney told Variety on Tuesday evening, reflecting on the film’s premise at the New York premiere.

Based on Warren Adler’s comedic anti-romance novel, “The War of the Roses,” the Searchlight Pictures movie follows Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch) as they navigate marriage, raising twins, and balancing their careers as chef and architect, respectively. But, just when Ivy’s crab shack begins to boom with buzz and success, Theo’s latest architectural venture comes crashing down.

“The foundation of your relationship has to be pretty strong to weather these things,” added Janney, who plays an intimidatingly deadpan divorce lawyer in the film. “And...

Benedict Cumberbatch's 'The Roses' Gets a "Fresh" Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman's The Roses, a remake of Danny DeVito's '80s dark comedy classic The War of the Roses, which itself is based on the popular book of the same name by Warren Adler, has landed a fresh Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its release in theaters. The movie, hailing from veteran comedy director Jay Roach, is scheduled to be unleashed on the big screen on Aug. 29, 2025 — but has it come up smelling of roses or is it a war of words between critics? And how does it fare against the original film adaptation?

The original The War of the Roses starring Michael Douglas and...

‘The Roses’ Review: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Sand Down the Sharper Points of a Classic Satire
Image
Now this is a funny idea for a remake of one of our bitterest, darkest satires about the pains of marriage: What if we spent some serious time in the salad days of our central relationship? Such is the somewhat bold conceit of Jay Roach’s “The Roses,” a reimagining (and truly so) of Warren Adler’s novel “The War of the Roses” and, to a lesser extent, Danny DeVito’s incredibly funny 1989 hit film of the same name. On paper, this may sound silly and strange — isn’t the joy of “The War of the Roses,” uh, the war? — but Roach and stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman find such fun in the happy days that it nearly distracts from what’s inevitable.

Nearly.

Armed with a script from Tony McNamara, Roach’s film opens far from those happy days, with Theo Rose (Cumberbatch) and Ivy Rose (Colman) going...

Benedict Cumberbatch's 'The Roses' Comedy Remake Scores 66% on Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Benedict Cumberbatch has established himself as one of Britain's most versatile and compelling actors, with a career spanning the stage, television, and film. He first captured international attention as the razor-sharp detective Sherlock Holmes in the acclaimed BBC series Sherlock (2010–2017), a performance that earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and solidified his reputation as a singular talent.

On the big screen, Cumberbatch has garnered critical acclaim for his portrayals of complex figures, including codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (2014) and a brooding rancher in The Power of the Dog (2021), both earning him Oscar nominations. Alongside these accolades, Cumberbatch has delivered memorable turns in celebrated period dramas such as Atonement,...

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman’s Brand-New Black Comedy Debuts With a Mixed Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Although the summer 2025 box office seems to be all out of major blockbusters, including the releases of Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth and the latest MCU entry, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, there are still some eye-catching projects yet to arrive, with two in particular ready to debut this coming weekend. First is Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, which is worth watching for, among other reasons, Matt Smith's mohawk. Then there is The Roses, the new black comedy directed by Jay Roach.

The latter of the two, despite starring two of Britain's finest actors in Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, hasn't started with the impressive bang it might've hoped for,...

‘The Roses’ Review: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Can Do Almost Anything, Except Convince Us They Belong Together
Image
There have been 36 years, roughly 40 million divorces and a seismic cultural shift (or several) since Danny DeVito’s dark, down-with-love comedy “The War of the Roses” pitted Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas against one another, but the marketing pitch for that movie still makes me laugh.

“Once in a lifetime comes a motion picture that makes you feel like falling in love again,” teased the tagline. “This is not that movie.”

Bringing fresh wit and 21st-century gender politics to Warren Adler’s witheringly anti-romantic-comedy novel, “Meet the Fockers” director Jay Roach has dropped the “war” from “The War of the Roses.” His take — which isn’t quite a remake — may be less belligerent, but it’s still got bite. By the end, seemingly well-matched life partners Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch) are trying to kill each other under the highly combustible roof of their custom-built love nest.

The Roses Review
Image
Danny DeVito’s The War of the Roses felt like the last word on marital warfare when it was released in 1989, but screenwriter Tony McNamara clearly thinks there’s more mud to be slung and carnage to dig into in this new adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 best selling novel. This 2025 update, simply titled The Roses, swaps out the visual anarchy of the original for something sharper, crueller, and more in tune with our times. The result is a biting tragicomedy that thrives on its central performances, even if visually it can seem a little cheap.

Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch) fall for each other in a...

The Roses (2025) Movie Review: An Uneven Yet Frequently Hilarious Dramedy Of Self-Serious Marital Woes
Image
The 1981 novel “The War of the Roses” felt like a mainstream work of transgressive satire, as its merciless satire of a picturesque American family was perfectly synced to the Reagan-era obsession with “family values.” The 1989 adaptation from Danny DeVito may not have been as nuanced in its perspective on class struggles, but it certainly captured the debauchery and ruthlessness of the material, with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner offering a dark inversion of their previous collaboration on “Romancing the Stone.”

It’s both fascinating and praiseworthy that Jay Roach’s remake, “The Roses,” is not quite as cynical as its predecessor, and finds an undercurrent of warmth within both of its protagonists.

Olivia Colman Can’t Believe One ‘Absurd Rumor’ About Benedict Cumberbatch Is Fake
Image
Olivia Colman was surprised to find out that a rumor about Benedict Cumberbatch’s car collection was fake. The actors star together in the upcoming black comedy The Roses and are on a promotional tour. In an interview with Vogue, the two asked each other icebreaker questions and seemed to be well in sync.

Despite his known love for cars, Cumberbatch said that the rumor about his supercar collection was the most absurd one he had heard before, which shocked Colman. He said (via Vogue),

That I have a supercar collection. 750 million or is it that hundred thousand? I don’t know. Yeah. It’s a huge amount of money.

‘The Roses’ Review: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman Get Thorny in Deftly Funny Remake
Image
To hear movies tell it, divorce is one of the worst things that has ever happened in the history of the universe. Two people enter into a legally binding contract, sometimes getting religion involved, but then one or both of them realize they’d rather not be in that contract anymore. So they ask to cancel that contract. It should be reasonable. It should be easy. Instead, according to movies, people end up miserable, broken, maybe even murdered. The best case scenario is your identical twin daughters team up, switch places, and trick you both into getting remarried. If you don’t have twins, I guess it’s misery and death for you.

Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
The Roses review – dieback blights Colman and Cumberbatch remake
Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
Both British actors are let down by the overly glossy, romcom-y sheen of this update of Warren Adler’s 1980s novel about a spectacularly toxic marriage

Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, the two most prestigious English screen actors in the world, resoundingly butt heads in this feel-bad movie; it is oddly, but not uninterestingly, composed throughout in feelgood romcom style. In casting terms, this is a Borg-McEnroe 10-set tie-break leading to play being suspended even as the leads bring every microlitre of their technique to the game.

They play Ivy and Theo, two high-achieving professionals whose marriage becomes a black-comic Chornobyl of toxic hate; it is adapted from the 1981 novel...

The Roses Review: A Devilishly Hilarious Dark Comedy About Love & Marriage

Starting in the late '90s and into the 21st century, director Jay Roach was one of the most revered comedy directors in Hollywood. Having helmed every installment of the "Austin Powers" franchise, as well as the hit comedy "Meet the Parents" (and the lesser sequel that followed), Roach found great success in bringing lots of laughter to the big screen. Though his comedic presence dwindled with underperforming comedies like "Dinner for Schmucks" and "The Campaign," Roach tapped into his serious side with dramas like the Sarah Palin-centric "Game Change," the historical Hollywood drama "Trumbo," and the Roger Ailes takedown "Bombshell.

‘The Roses’ Review: Irreconcilable Differences
Image
Given how much the dynamics of heterosexual relationships have changed in the 40-plus years since Warren Adler wrote The War of the Roses, there’s perhaps no better time than the present for a new take on the material. At least on paper, Jay Roach’s The Roses, written by Tony McNamara, contains all the right elements for the job.

Barry (Andy Samberg), an aging millennial lawyer, is married to an odd, hilariously horny, self-described empath, Amy (Kate McKinnon). In trying to hit all the benchmarks of a traditional relationship escalator, from the high-paying job to the dinner parties with other successful friends, they realize that the supposed conservative touchstones...

‘The Roses’ Review: Benedict Cumberbatch And Olivia Colman In Witty Remake Of Marital Slugfest
Image
In 1989 director Danny DeVito brought a brutally funny dark comic approach to the screen adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel The War of the Roses. Now, 36 years later, along comes a remake from Searchlight Pictures called The Roses, leaving “The War of” reference out entirely. So this version’s director Jay Roach and screenwriter Tony McNamara have done what is called a “reimagination” rather than a remake, but of course it is a remake, and thanks in no small part to the casting of British acting icons Benedict Cumberbatch as Theo Rose and Olivia Colman as Ivy Rose, it is well worth your time to revisit this marital showdown first inhabited by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Nevertheless, the main event of the book and the previous film are the wickedly vicious fights between the couple, and Searchlight’s trailer seems...
