Warring with Harvey Weinstein, marvelling at Tom Cruise, realising Mona Lisa and many other films were about himself … the great Irish director looks back on his astonishing career
Neil Jordan has spent his career telling strange, twisting stories that have mesmerised, surprised and occasionally misfired. Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, The Company of Wolves, Breakfast on Pluto – these films all veer off in unexpected directions, ambushing the audience. But it turns out the director saved the biggest twist for himself. Watching some of his films at a festival some years ago, Jordan was startled to see his own private life up there on the screen. It seems he had unknowingly channelled his relationships with his father, his wife and his children into stories about gangsters, terrorists and hot vampires. “I was shocked at how much of myself I revealed,” he says. “It was like a physical shock.”

Noteworthy library titles arriving this month include “Fight Club” (1999), “Legally Blonde” (2001) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

It's a special day today for movie lovers, as Hollywood legends and acting buddies Robert De Niro and Sean Penn are both being celebrated for their work on their shared birthday. Of course, both of these performers have had very impressive careers of their own, with each winning two Academy Awards. Cinephiles will also know that the two friends have shared the screen on multiple occasions as well, such as when they co-starred in the 1989 comedy We're No Angels. On Aug. 17, De Niro turned 77 while Penn turned 60, and both actors have begun trending on social media as a result.
Certainly, both Robert De Niro and Sean Penn are considered to be among the greatest actors of all time. With so many acclaimed roles to choose from, it could be very difficult for fans to pick a favorite performance from De Niro. Many birthday posts highlight his legendary performance in Taxi Driver,...

Jan Komasa’s Oscar-nominated drama “Corpus Christi” is, like many films before it, built on lies. It’s the story of an ex-con, played by Bartosz Bielenia, who dreams of becoming a priest but cannot because of his criminal past. So instead, he impersonates a man of the cloth and becomes a pillar of a small-town community.
His unorthodox approach to holiness — half plagiarized from the priest at his correctional facility, half common-sense morality — has a positive impact on his flock, so one could find themselves asking, “What’s the harm?”
As an audience, we have perhaps become a little complacent about duplicity in fiction, where it seems like half of all relationships are built on whimsical lies. They usually collapse after the inevitable revelations, only to pick themselves up and go on again like nothing ever happened. And we are expected just to be Ok with that. In real life,...

In 2018, Charles Dickens’ classic novella “A Christmas Carol” turns 175, but its utility as a springboard for movie and TV adaptations shows no signs of slowing down. It’s a classic story of regret and redemption, and its lead character Ebenezer Scrooge offers an arc from misery and cruelty to love and kindness that’s catnip for any actor or actress. (I watched a sleighful of Scrooges for my book “Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas” and am doing you the service of keeping the Barbie and “All Dogs Go to Heaven” versions off this list.)
Here’s a look at 20 performers who have put their own unique spin on “Bah! Humbug!”
Seymour Hicks, “Scrooge” (1935): There were a few silent versions, but this was the screen’s first talking Scrooge, in a version that’s early-talkie through and through, from the technical limitations to the big, theatrical performances, Hicks’ included.

It's awards season, which means practically every day brings a new wave of shots of smiling celebrities. And every batch of professionally grinning stars further shines a light on one anomaly: Sean Penn, a man who is innately unable to muster up any joy on a red carpet. He’s like an unhappy cat shoved into a penguin suit. He has been a star for more than 30 years, and there is something impressive about his stubborn resentment of all things flash-bulbed. He saunters his way through every gala with a fixed scowl, as if he were part bull and trying to hold back his seeing-red rage. Simply put: He’s the anti–Anne Hathaway. Below, stroll through a history of Sean Penn begrudgingly walking the red carpet. Or maybe he’s actually only pretending to hate it; it’s hard to tell — the man’s a great actor. 1989, We're No Angels...

Sean Penn doesn't do comedy. Wait, let's rephrase that...Sean Penn doesn't do comedy often. Of course, there's "Fast Times At Ridgemont High," and he's lent his incredible talents to comic vehicles only a handful of times in such films as "We're No Angels," "What Just Happened" and "Shanghai Surprise." But he's not above doing funny stuff. In fact, you may recall for that for the longest time he was attached/linked to an earlier incarnation of The Farrelly Brothers' "The Three Stooges" (and he likely dodged a bullet) and he's also guested on Zach Galifianakis' "Between Two Ferns" (watch below). But a role in a remake of a classic film with Ben Stiller? Yeah, we didn't see this one coming either.
But it's happening as Penn is taking a role in "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty." This new version of the story will center on a mild-mannered photo manager at Life magazine,...

The independent drama This Must Be the Place premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May to reportedly mixed reviews, but will get a chance at redemption early next year after recently being added to at the Sundance Film Festival line-up for January.
Starring Sean Penn as a retired rock star named Cheyenne, This Must Be the Place follows the character's journey to find the Nazi officer that tortured his father during World War II and is now living as a refugee in the U.S. From what the new trailer shows, it looks like another memorable performance from Penn. His Robert Smith-looking Cheyenne has a temperament falling somewhere between the simplicity of Penn's convict character of Jim from 1989's We're No Angels and the kindness of Sam from 2001's I Am Sam, but ultimately the performance stands on its own.

Last year Brad listed his list of Top Ten Christmas Movies and in 2007 David listed the ten films he considered the Top Ten Deranged Christmas Flicks. What follows is my list of the twelve best Christmas/Holiday movies to warm your heart. When you compare the twelve films that follow to the two lists I just mentioned, three of them can be found on Brad's top ten and two on David's list of Deranged Christmas Flicks, but perhaps the most interesting fact of them all is that all three lists share the exact same film in the #1 slot. Robert De Niro is funny? Funny how? Funny as in he makes you laugh?
That's probably how De Niro's "Goodfellas" pal Joe Pesci reacted to the news that the "Killer Elite" star will be playing a washed-up comedian in the appropriately-titled "The Comedian," according to Variety.
It ends up that Sean Penn and not Martin Scorsese will be directing the indie drama about a diwn-and-out comic clinging to any recognition of his former fame in the hope of reviving his now-stagnant career. After being sentenced to community service for hitting an audience member, he meets a woman (Kristin Wiig) who turns his life upside-down.

[1] I'm kind of a sucker for movies about fading stars (Sunset Boulevard is one of my all-time favorites), so I've been curious to see Art Linson's script The Comedian make it to the screen. I first heard about it this spring, when Martin Scorsese was rumored [2] to be directing with Robert De Niro in the lead, but that report's turned out to be only half true. De Niro is indeed set to star in the film, but it's Sean Penn who'll be taking over behind the camera. Additionally, the project has just seen the addition of Saturday Night Live veteran Kristen Wiig, in a rare (I'm assuming) dramatic role. More details after the jump. Linson's script revolves around an insult comic (De Niro) who once enjoyed fame as a beloved television character but now sees his career stalling. When he hits an audience member in the head with a microphone during a show,...

My affinity for Sean Penn as an actor peaked well over a decade ago, fostered by his run of great performances in seemingly every genre from the mid-1980s through the 1990s. I still think he can be great, but so many of his recent roles have just felt like extensions of his less-than-charming public persona -- that of the taciturn, marble-mouthed, know-it-all butthole. So, I desperately wanted this trailer to be patently absurd, as potentially Fubar'd as Sean Penn looks in the header photo, just to see him fail miserably at something whimsiquirkilicious. Schadenfreude is not a pretty thing, but it seems to sustain us as a species. Yet, while Penn is clearly playing against his own type (Milk also being a recent exception), the movie appears to be somewhat more straightforward than his character's hairdo.

Most recently, Robert De Niro and Sean Penn were seen together in Barry Levinson's What Just Happened, but they first crossed paths in the forgotten but enjoyable David Mamet-scripted comedy We're No Angels, where the two play escaped convicts that are mistaken for priests. It's one of those goofy premises that just screams 1980s (it was released in '89), but it's good-natured and fun. De Niro and Penn's hilariously retarded expressions never failed to crack me up. Subject: Robert De Niro, 67-year old American actor, producer, hotelier & director
Date of Assessment: January 7, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: Legendary, Scorsese
Negative Buzzwords: Quantity over quality, Fockers
The Case: It's a frequently used term in the commend threads of this column; that is, the so-called "free pass" handed out to actors whose careers have undeniably lost their luster but not yet overridden their glory days. However, when an undisputed legend like Robert De Niro has spent the past decade (give or take) churning out a very steady supply of cinematic crap, well, isn't it about time to revoke that free pass? Although I must admit that the true meaning of the term still eludes me, and perhaps I'm reading the situation wrong by using De Niro as an example; but if many of you still care that much about this former legend, then I'm virtually begging you to please explain your definition of "free pass.

He turns round, and it's hard not to marvel at a face that has been the source of so much honest, faltering emotion on screen. With its mixture of the craggy and the spongy, it suggests Mount Rushmore remade in cake form, pock-marked but soft. Running across the bridge of his nose is a crease deep enough to hold a pencil. His ear lobes are droopy, his hair a pile of chaotic curls. They broke the mould, not to mention the curling tongs, when they made him.
Even if you can't place the name, Reilly's face will be familiar from some of...

Usually, I'm the first one to decry the despoiling of my childhood with the constant onslaught of remakes in Hollywood. Every week another classic from the 1980's seems to be plucked from my nostalgic mind and parboiled for moronic Two Thousand Teen Decade consumption. They've also been snagging perfectly good foreign films and paring them down into Americanized versions. Sometimes, they don't even wait more than a year or two, as is the case with the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo or the Let The Right One In debacles. It seems like Hollywood doesn't have an original fucking idea in its empty little head anymore.
But then I did research. (I've been doing lots of research lately for the Litely Salted Trivia website which all of you are undoubtedly visiting every single day to get your asses handed to you by my beloved's murderous Ghostbusters Quiz.) And I learned something interesting.

"Ondine" director Neil Jordan is dipping his hand in another novel as he signs up to take on "Skippy Dies". Jordan will be writing and directing the big screen version of the Paul Murray written tale which at the moment is not set for any sort of release date. Locked in to produce the feature is Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen under Number 9 Films with James Flynn perched in under Littlewave Film Productions. The story centers on two unlikely roommates -- Ruprecht, a mathematical genius with a penchant for the French horn, and Skippy, whose mother is dying of cancer and who is being abused by the school's gym teacher. When Skippy dies, Ruprecht performs a slew of wacky science experiments in an attempt to reach his friend beyond the grave.Sure, not too many people flocked out to the limited movie theaters to see "Ondine", but that's not...

Mama always said, "Casting Tidbits was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get." First up, Robert De Niro may reunite with Sean Penn for the first time since they worked together on the disastrous comedy We're No Angels. The potential reunion would have them star with Frances McDormand in This Must Be the Place, the next film from writer/director Paolo Sorrentino (of Il Divo). The story follows a retired rock star who decides to track down and kill the ex-Nazi war criminal who executed his father. Though we know De Niro is up for a character named Mordecai Levi, we don't know much else yet. Next, Pajiba reports Matt Damon and Keira Knightley have both been offered the lead roles in Tender is the Night, a film based on the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name. The film doesn't sound like anything...

As we reported last year, MGM is getting ready to produce a big screen film featuring "The Three Stooges." This Farrelly Brothers film (they wrote the script, and will also direct and produce) will not be a biopic, but more along the lines of the Stooges' characters doing their antics as popularized on TV and film.
So far, the studio has set Sean Penn to play Larry.
MGM is also negotiating with Jim Carrey to star as Curly! According to Variety, "the actor is already making plans to gain 40 pounds to approximate the physical dimensions of Jerome "Curly" Howard."
And the studio is putting Benicio Del Toro on top of their wish list to play Moe!
This is an intriguing cast! Serious actors working in a comedy. The result can either be golden or disastrous. But both Penn and Del Toro have worked in a comedy flick before.

Whenever you imagined a dream cast to play the Three Stooges in a movie, did you ever imagine an Academy Award-winning gay activist would be the first to sign? Sean Penn (?!) has agreed to play Larry in The Three Stooges, according to Variety, and Jim Carrey is negotiating for the part of Curly. Reportedly, Carrey is preparing to gain 40 pounds so he can play the role. And to play Moe? None other than Benicio Del Toro is being targeted by MGM and the Farrelly Brothers.
Jim Carrey would be a natural, of course, but Sean Penn? Does he have a funny bone in his body? His last attempt at a humorous role came in 1989's We're No Angels, a woefully unfunny film in which Penn was teamed with Robert DeNiro. Sure, he made his bones as the stoned surfer Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but it takes...
