Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

The Toxic Avenger reboot has received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, surpassing the cult classic original and its sequels. The original Toxic Avenger was initially ignored but later gained a cult following through midnight showings. The reboot recaptures the unhinged action, splatter gore, and dark comedy of the original while adding an emotional throughline.
The Toxic Avenger reboot's Rotten Tomatoes score debuts at an impressive franchise high. Written and directed by Macon Blair, the upcoming reimagining follows a similar story as the 1984 original involving an everyman-janitor who is transformed into a monstrous vigilante after a toxic accident. The original film achieved cult classic status and was followed by three less successful sequels – The Toxic Avenger Part II, The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie, and Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.

A new preview for The Toxic Avenger shows off the cast of the upcoming horror remake.
Shared exclusively by Entertainment Weekly, the teaser images highlight Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a lowly janitor at a chemical factory who is eventually mutated into the film's titular hero. "There is a terrible industrial accident that renders him a mutant and an outcast, but also gives him some super strength and super abilities that sets him on a path of being an unlikely vigilante in this downward-spiraling society," director Macon Blair explained. "Similar to the original Toxic Avenger, he's singularly unqualified to be a hero. He's not especially brave, he's not especially crafty, but he has his heart in the right place, and he starts taking it to the limit when he's pushed into a corner."

Jacob Tremblay is set to co-star alongside Peter Dinklage in Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” film, a reboot of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 low-budget action-comedy splatter film.
The reboot will follow a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s pushed out of a second-story window by bullies into a vat of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into a hideously deformed mutant gifted with superhuman size and strength. He must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed.
The original film generated four sequels: “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.” The franchise expanded into an animated children’s TV series spin-off called “Toxic Crusaders,” a musical stage production and a Marvel comic book series.

Two years after making his directorial debut with “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” Macon Blair is stepping behind the camera for Legendary’s “Toxic Avenger” reboot. The actor-turned-filmmaker, whose on-screen resume includes everything from “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room” to “The Florida Project” and “Logan Lucky,” will both write and direct. After gestating in development for nearly six years, The Toxic Avenger remake is finally moving forward with a new director. Conrad Vernon, who co-directed the hit R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party, has signed on to direct. Mike Arnold (Archer) and Chris Poole (The Grackle) have come aboard to rewrite the script for this long-awaited remake, which was first written by the project's original director, Steve Pink and D.C. Franklin.
Deadline says this new version is a more grounded and mainstream approach to The Toxic Avenger, which first hit theaters in 1984 from director Lloyd Kaufman. The story followed a New Jersey teenager named Melvin, a nerdy janitor who falls into a vat of hazardous waste, which transforms him into The Toxic Avenger. Here's what Conrad Vernon had to say in a statement about joining this project.
"The opportunity to re-imagine a favorite cult-classic from my high school years is an honor.

While working at the Tromaville Health Club in 1984, goodhearted, 98lb. weakling Melvin “The Mop Boy” was tricked into wearing a pink tutu and teased unmercifully until he fell from a two-story window and landed in a vat of nuclear waste. The reboot of the 1980s cult film Toxic Avenger has Arnold Schwarzenegger in talks. Steve Pink and Daniel C. Mitchell wrote the script for the film which is being produced by Elysium Films as well as Richard Saperstein, Akiva Goldsman, Charlie Corwin and Michael Benaroya. The story follows Melvin Ferd III, a skinny, feeble guy who falls into toxic waste and transforms into a creature who fights crime. Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman directed the original film which starred Andrew Maranda, Mitch Cohen, Jennifer Babtist, Cindy Manion and Robert Prichard. There were three films: The Toxic Avenger (1984), The Toxic Avenger Part II (1989) and The Toxic Avenger: The Last Temptation of Toxie (1989).

Melvin worked at the Tromaville gym, a 90-lb. weakling who got pushed around. They dressed him up in a pink tutu. They beat him up, and they threw him down. He landed in a barrel of waste. Toxic chemicals ate his face. Mutating, energized by Tromatons… This Jersey hero's gonna clean up the place! T-t-t-Toxic Avenger!
It dawned on me that I’ve been doing these B-Sides for so long now, and somehow Troma has gone grossly unrepresented. That gets corrected today with Scott Casey’s hard-rocking Toxic Avenger theme song from The Toxic Avenger Part II. It’s arguable that this song is even better than the Tromatic 1989 sequel itself.
To my disappointment nobody has put out a music video of “The Toxic Avenger Part II Theme” using clips from it or any of the various Toxic Avenger movies. On the plus side, that means you can listen to...

When I was a teenager, I used to get ill every year around Good Friday. It was like having stigmata, but in the form of tonsillitis or earache, and in retrospect, I think I may have been doing it for the attention. One year, I got a virus that manifested itself in about 60 simultaneous mouth ulcers. I had to paint my mouth with some vile antibiotic glue which tasted of boiled cow, and couldn't eat at all, but only lie sadly on the sofa with my giant swollen face in my hands, so my brother decided to cheer me up with a film fest.
He introduced me to what is still my favourite movie, The Princess Bride, and then put on The Tall Guy starring Emma Thompson and Jeff Goldblum. It contains, perhaps, the least generous...

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.
I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
