Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.

The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

The Toxic Avenger reboot has received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, surpassing the cult classic original and its sequels. The original Toxic Avenger was initially ignored but later gained a cult following through midnight showings. The reboot recaptures the unhinged action, splatter gore, and dark comedy of the original while adding an emotional throughline.

Legendary's The Toxic Avenger is soon premiering in movie theaters, and the early reviews from critics at Rotten Tomatoes have separated the new film from the first four movies.

As of now, the Toxic Avenger reboot is sitting with a near-perfect score of 95% on the Tomatometer based on 20 reviews. Only a single one of those reviews is "rotten" while all of the others heap high praise onto the film. Everyone also appears to be in agreement that the new Toxic Avenger is absolutely bonkers and "immature" in a way that's reminiscent of Troma's prior films, but the result is said to be very entertaining, making for a rather enjoyable film.

A new preview for The Toxic Avenger shows off the cast of the upcoming horror remake.

Shared exclusively by Entertainment Weekly, the teaser images highlight Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a lowly janitor at a chemical factory who is eventually mutated into the film's titular hero. "There is a terrible industrial accident that renders him a mutant and an outcast, but also gives him some super strength and super abilities that sets him on a path of being an unlikely vigilante in this downward-spiraling society," director Macon Blair explained. "Similar to the original Toxic Avenger, he's singularly unqualified to be a hero. He's not especially brave, he's not especially crafty, but he has his heart in the right place, and he starts taking it to the limit when he's pushed into a corner."

The reboot will follow a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s pushed out of a second-story window by bullies into a vat of toxic waste. After gestating in development for nearly six years, The Toxic Avenger remake is finally moving forward with a new director. Conrad Vernon, who co-directed the hit R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party, has signed on to direct. Mike Arnold (Archer) and Chris Poole (The Grackle) have come aboard to rewrite the script for this long-awaited remake, which was first written by the project's original director, Steve Pink and D.C. Franklin.

Deadline says this new version is a more grounded and mainstream approach to The Toxic Avenger, which first hit theaters in 1984 from director Lloyd Kaufman. The horror-comedy. Perhaps the most difficult sub-genre of film to perfect. Most attempts at horror-comedy don't come off well. Either they're too scary without enough comedy or (more frequently) mostly humor with not enough horror. A lot of times they just come across as trying too hard and cheesy. But every once in a while a movie gets it just right. And when that happens, audiences embrace and celebrate the brilliant and elusive successful horror-comedy.

It seems that even B-movies are not immune from Hollywood's current fixation with rehashing and repackaging failed or forgotten franchises for a new audience. According to Deadline, Troma Entertainment's campy The Toxic Avenger is the latest movie property to be rebooted, courtesy of producers Akiva Goldsman, Richard Saperstein and Charlie Corwin of Corwin's Original Media. Deadline describes the new Toxic Avenger as "a green superhero for these environmentally conscious times."

It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.

I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.
