So the production company behind the original movie, Itc, went ahead with putting cinema’s deadliest daddy back on the big screen. The pressing question at the time though, was whether or not Terry O’Quinn would return. And if he did, how would his character even come back?

John Auerbach, whose sole screenwriting credit is Stepfather II, was put in charge of bringing the fatal father figure back from the dead. Like anyone else in his position, Auerbach assumed he would be penning a prequel, on account of the fact that O’Quinn’s character was killed at the end of the first movie. On the contrary,...

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Pegasus", Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is reunited with Admiral Erik Pressman (Terry O'Quinn), his former commanding officer on board a ship called the U.S.S. Pegasus. Pressman is visiting the Enterprise to reveal that Starfleet intelligence has located the missing Pegasus, presumably destroyed 15 years ago. It's their mission to either salvage the Pegasus or destroy it before nearby Romulans can cannibalize its technology.

In some meaningful asides, Riker and Pressman talk about the "final mission" of the Pegasus, and how there are some things they have been keeping secret for the last 15 years, hoping that Starfleet never finds out. Like most Admirals on "Star Trek," Pressman is up to something shady, and he had convinced a young Ensign Riker to go along with it. Scream Factory has announced today that The Stepfather and The Strangers will be joining the world of 4K Ultra HD with brand new releases.

Both films get a 4K Ultra HD upgrade on September 10, 2024, and they’re available to preorder now.

One wouldn’t think that a schlocky slasher series about killer puppets would produce more than a dozen films across three decades, let alone sequels that are still being discussed today, yet here we are getting deep in the weeds over the straight-to-video sequel bliss that is Puppet Master 4. Puppet Master is easily the most successful property to come out of Charles Band’s Full Moon Features, best known for movies like Castle Freak and Subspecies, as well as more low-hanging fruit like The Gingerdead Man and The Evil Bong series. Puppet Master falls comfortably between these two extremes. After a satisfying initial trilogy that chronicles the grandiose revenge scheme of a persecuted toymaker, Puppet Master–like many long-running horror series–is forced to ask, “What’s next?”

Jeff Burr, director of “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” “From a Whisper to a Scream” and “Straight Into Darkness,” has died. He was 60.

Director-writer Jim Wynorski shared the news of Burr’s death on Facebook, writing that he “passed away last night [Oct. 10] in his sleep.”

Burr helmed New Line’s “Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III,” starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain in the 1990 installment. He later directed several entries in the “Pumpkinhead” and “Puppet Master” franchises, including “Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings” (1993), “Puppet Master 4” (1993), “Puppet Master 5” (1995) and “Puppet Master: Blitzkrief Massacre” (2018).

Burr was born in Aurora, Ohio, on July 18, 1963, and grew up in Dalton, Ga. He attended USC, but dropped out after his third year alongside fellow director Kevin Meyer to finish their American civil war short “Divided We Fall.” His feature-length directorial debut was 1987’s “From a Whisper to a Scream,” starring Vincent Price, Clu Gulager and Terry Kiser.

Jeff Burr, the horror specialist who directed Vincent Price in one of his last movies and entries in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, has died. He was 60.

Burr died Tuesday in his sleep in Dalton, Georgia, of apparent complications from a stroke, his longtime friend, actor Eric Spudic, told The Hollywood Reporter.

After several other directors had dropped out, Burr came aboard at the last minute to helm New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), this installment starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain.

He said it took 11 tries before the MPAA would sign off on an ‘R’ rating for the film, which grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.

Burr went on to direct Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).

Prior to making his mark on the Chainsaw franchise with the fan favorite third installment, Jeff Burr directed 1987’s Vincent Price-starring From a Whisper to a Scream and 1989’s Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy. He later directed 1993 sequel Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings.

Jeff Burr’s directorial credits also include 1990s horror movies Puppet Master 4, Puppet Master 5, and Night of the Scarecrow, as well as The Werewolf Reborn!, Phantom Town, The Boy With the X-Ray Eyes, Straight into Darkness, Devil’s Den, Resurrection, Gun of the Black Sun, Tornado Warning, and in more recent years, Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre.

[We're celebrating some of the most memorable horror and sci-fi movies of 1989 this month in Daily Dead's Class of 89 retrospective series! Sequels are always a tricky proposition, and one that most fans meet halfway with more than a little trepidation; we want something new, while still retaining the qualities or spirit that originally drew us in. And then there’s Stepfather II: Make Room for Daddy (1989), which tells the same familial terror tale, but in such a way that we don’t mind the repetition—as a matter of fact, we embrace it.

Well, I do, anyway; there are some folks that dismiss Stepfather II as a gorier clone of its predecessor, which is simply not true. It’s also much funnier. Critics naturally had their woodworking tools ready to chisel away at the goodwill the first film had accrued, and many claimed it merely rehashed the events of the first with a bloodier perspective. Given a limited release in theaters, it brought in $1.5 million—not terrible for a limited release and a supposed “rehash.

Featuring incredible makeup effects and immortal one-liners, The Monster Squad is one of the definitive horror movies of the 1980s, and it's given the spotlight it deserves in the new ’80s horror documentary In Search of Darkness. When you think of ’80s horror cinema, you likely think of John Carpenter. From 1980's The Fog to 1988's They Live, Carpenter created movies that were as thought-provoking as they were horrifying, all the while showcasing practical effects that still stand the test of time. This Sunday marks one year since the passing of filmmaker Tobe Hooper. Last year we celebrated Hooper's legacy on a very special and solemn episode of our podcast, and one of the co-hosts on that episode was of course film journalist Patrick Bromley. Nobody on the planet has celebrated Hooper's work like Bromley has over the years, especially in the months after the director's unexpected passing, and Bromley's celebration of the influential director will continue in its biggest installment yet this Sunday in a live video tribute featuring some very special guests that will pay their respects to one of the horror genre's unsung heroes.

Beginning at 10:00am Cst on Sunday, August 26th on F This Movie! and running throughout the day, Patrick Bromley's live tribute to Tobe Hooper will feature special guests who worked with Hooper, including filmmaker and Post Mortem podcast host Mick Garris and actress Caroline Williams.

Well son of a diddly, I just plum forgot about last week’s Poster Friday. No excuses, I was too busy looking at all the great Blu-ray/DVD deals online and not buying anything. I’m…not sure why I do that, it’s just a giant tease. Although I am proud of myself for not buying anything. Good boy Kevin.

I didn’t see Candyman until somewhat recently (I know, I know. It was pretty great though) so I immediately went searching for posters and found this rather great one by Justin Erickson.

What an awesome poster for The Abominable Dr. Phibes. Love Story had come out the year previous and I can only assume their tagline is mocking that film.

Finally…we end off with one of the greatest sequels of our time…Stepfather 2: Make Room For Daddy.

So if you loved The Stepfather and think it was a pretty solid production, you would be shocked to find out all the insanity that seemed to surround the sequel’s production. Re-writes. Re-shoots. Added blood and/or gore or some reasaonble facsimile there of. Cool box art. Actors and directors who refused to compromise their visions. A couple of Weinsteins with a “better understanding” of what the horror fans really want. While the first movie may be superior in many ways, the soap opera that surrounded the release of this first sequel will tell you quite a bit about the climate of filmmaking in the late 80′s. Is this a true sequel? Sure it is, but does it feel the same? Has The Stepfather II gone simple slasher formula or is it trying to psychological thrill you? Looking at actor Meg Foster’s resume brought on a feeling of disbelief for me. I know her as a sci-fi and horror genre icon. Most people in my circle know her from such films as They Live, Masters of the Universe, Stepfather II, and Oblivion as well as TV shows like Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Sliders.

Before Lost, actor Terry O’Quinn was perhaps most famous for his central role in 1987’s The Stepfather.
