Clooney and Pitt are reuniting for the eagerly anticipated flick after previously working together in the “Ocean’’s franchise and 2008’s “Burn After Reading”.

Image
Image Source: Getty / Photo by Scott Dudelson

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Karol G revealed in an Instagram post the name of her upcoming album. "Finally, finally," she captioned a short clip in Spanish. "Today I announce a project that I've dedicated so much love and time to. I just know that for me and for everyone else, 'Mañana Será Bonito' (Tomorrow Will Be Pretty)."

In the video, Karol is seen sitting in a red car in Medellín, Colombia, eating an empanada, when all of a sudden, a small note appears on her windshield that reads in Spanish: "If you're sad, call me." She gets out of the car and dials the number on a payphone, and a young boy answers from what appears to be a telecommunications center run by kids. In an effort to cheer her up, he advises her to write a letter to Santa Claus, perform at a show,...

Rian Johnson’s ‘Poker Face’ Is a One-Episode Wonder — with a Decent Detective Procedural to Boot
Image
Midway through the “Poker Face” premiere, Adrien Brody’s smarmy casino boss recounts the legend behind Natasha Lyonne’s card-playing prowess. “She played straight,” Sterling Frost Jr. says. “And yet she played with an almost unnatural infallibility.” Soon, we find out why: Lyonne’s Charlie Cale always knows when someone’s lying. Whether it’s her best friend promising she’s fine after a fight with her husband or a stranger trying to bluff his way to the pot, Charlie sniffs out bullshit every time it drifts her way. “Just that something is off,” she says by way of explanation. “I can just tell.”

Charlie’s miraculous modus operandi — the ace up her sleeve, if you will — isn’t just a savvy twist for a TV detective; it also doubles as an explanation for how great storytellers should present a mystery. Even when watching a con, audiences don’t want...

Ocean's 8 Wins at the Box Office with $41.5 Million
Warner Bros.' Ocean's 8 had no trouble fending off the competition this weekend, debuting atop the box office with $41.5 million. The Ocean's Eleven spin-off had been projected to debut within the $40 million range in its first frame, and it managed to match those expectations with an impressive debut, ending the two-week winning streak of Disney/LucasFilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story, which dropped to a distant second place with $15.1 million. Ocean's Eight's reign may be a short one, with The Incredibles 2 arriving next weekend and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in the frame after that, but its debut is still impressive nonetheless.

The $41.5 million debut at the box office represents more than half of Ocean's 8's $70 million budget, and even though it only earned $12.2 million overseas for a global opening weekend tally of $53.7 million, it should have no trouble eclipsing its budget and making a solid profit. The...

‘Ocean’s 8’ Steals Franchise Record With $41.5M Opening – Final Sunday Update
4th Update, Sunday Am: Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s Ocean’s 8 is sailing in with a $41.5M opening, still the best debut for the franchise and a solid start for what will be a good piece of counter-programming in the event-filled marketplace.

When it comes to gender-swapping an established franchise, it’s also safe to say that Ocean’s 8 is a win, even though the movie is opening lower than Sony’s femme reboot of Ghostbusters ($46M). That’s primarily because Ocean’s 8 isn’t a geek nostalgia franchise like many ’80s pics. The brand doesn’t possess that preciousness, and therefore inherently avoided any negative naysay. In addition, the Ocean movies, even when they starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, were driven by female audiences, so changing-up this installment to Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, etc. was not only a smart and natural progression in continuing to stoke the audience,...

The Greatest Heist Comedies of All-Time
There’s nothing revelatory or new about adding a dose of the comedic to a crime picture, but the heist comedy is just a small corner of a vast and beloved cinematic landscape, as of recently, dominated by one filmmaker: Steven Soderbergh.

Responsible for four acclaimed entries in the genre, including Out of Sight and the Ocean’s 11 trilogy, Soderbergh has thankfully ended his so-called retirement and returned to film and the world of heist comedies with his newest, Logan Lucky, now playing in theaters. The film’s plot follows Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) a family man who plans to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, only to find he and his crew (Adam Driver, Daniel Craig and Riley Keough) must do the job while a Nascar race is underway.

To celebrate Soderbergh’s return with Logan Lucky, we’ve decided to look back at the greatest heist comedies of all-time.

John Travolta, Danny DeVito, Gene Hackman, and Rene Russo in Get Shorty (Stars et truands) (1995)
‘Get Shorty’ Review: This Smart Take on Elmore Leonard Will Make You Forget All About Chili Palmer
John Travolta, Danny DeVito, Gene Hackman, and Rene Russo in Get Shorty (Stars et truands) (1995)
Elmore Leonard doesn’t make adaptations easy. The many successful films and one great TV show produced from the renowned author’s work seem to indicate otherwise, but for every “Out of Sight” and “Justified,” there’s a “Killshot” and “Karen Sisco.”

Now, after a hailed novel and two feature films, “Get Shorty” becomes the latest Leonard crime story to get the series treatment, and it’s a lot closer in quality to its titular inspiration than its lesser sequel, “Be Cool.” But aside from being pretty darn good, this take goes its own way.

Anyone familiar with the 1990 book or 1995 film will certainly recognize the plot, but creator Davey Holmes’ new show isn’t doing an impression; not on any level. From the casting to the construction, this version of “Get Shorty” is its own beast. The hour-long drama may not be the next big breakout in the golden age of TV,...

25 surprising side businesses from Hollywood stars
Paul Newman’s salad dressing enterprise is common knowledge, but did you know about these 25 businesses run by Hollywood stars?

What do big-time movie stars get up to in their spare time? While their fictional counterparts might enjoy chopping wood or getting hosed down by friendly females (more on that here), actors themselves have a tendency towards wacky entrepreneurial ideas and hefty industrial investments.

Looking at our findings from some rigorous research (read: Googling), it seems that you can divide famous actors into a handful of groups – those who are trying to do something good for the world, those who are trying to break into internet megabucks and those who like opening restaurants.

Without further chit-chat, here’s a breakdown of which stars are behind which brands which you may or may not know and love…

Israel (2013)
'McFarland, USA' will close out 30th annual Santa Barbara Film Festival
Israel (2013)
A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Find Out Where 'The Interview' Is Playing Christmas Day
Antonio Flores
When Sony Pictures reversed their plans to cancel their theatrical release of The Interview earlier today, the decision sent indie theaters across the country into a frenzy to book the comedy in time for Christmas Day on Thursday. Deadline reports that Sony has implemented a 6 Pm Pst deadline for theaters to book the film, so the studio can send out hard drives containing the movie in time for these screenings. So far, a number of venues across the country have been confirmed, with several more likely to come as we get closer to the studio's deadline. Here's a statement from one source familiar with Sony's situation.

"Sony has had so many bookings coming in it is now focused on areas where a theater can guarantee a two-week run, or longer. They're so inundated with bookings they are being more careful about where they are booking [The Interview] in all the different markets.

‘The Interview’ Release: List Of Theaters Set To Show The Film
Antonio Flores
Refresh for latest… Here’s a list of theaters confirmed to be showing Sony’s The Interview on Christmas Day after the studio worked with indie chains on a release plan finalized this morning. The venues have a deadline of 6 Pm Pt today to decide whether to run the movie on December 25, as Sony must send theaters the movie hard drives in time to make Christmas Day screenings. Some theaters are booking the film for later in the month or into January, so that deadline isn’t looming as large. As of 4 Pm, more than 200 theaters had signed on.

This is all happening fast so this list will continue to grow. We’re hearing that there are still internal discussions among art houses about whether to add the pic to their schedules, with security and previous commitments among the concerns. Some of the theaters had planned to be dark on Christmas Day,...

Notebook's 6th Writers Poll: Fantasy Double Features of 2013
Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2013—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2013 to create a unique double feature.

All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2013 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch in that perfect world we know doesn't exist but can keep dreaming of every time we go to the movies.

Naomi Watts
Ebiri on The Impossible: The Calculated Tale of a Fateful Trip
Naomi Watts
Does any modern screen actress suffer physical agony as compellingly as Naomi Watts? Film after film, directors want to put her through the grinder — tormenting her with giant apes in King Kong, or with psycho home invaders in Funny Games. Once the action gets going in The Impossible — Juan-Antonio Bayona’s film about a family who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated a giant chunk of Southeast Asia — it’s hard to tear our eyes away from her, even as the story continues to tear bits and pieces of flesh and bone off her. She cries, she screams, she limps, she passes out, she goes practically purple, and all we want to do is jump into the movie and save her. I’m not sure any other actress today could have pulled this off without seeming cheap or manipulative. The same, unfortunately, cannot be said for the movie itself,...

What’s happened to the Hostel series?
With the latest Hostel movie released straight to DVD, Matt looks back at Eli Roth’s horror series, and at its gradual fall from grace...

In 2006, writer/director Eli Roth’s horror film Hostel was released in cinemas. Produced on a small budget, the film was a financial success, pulling in more than $80m around the world as well as winning a strong fan base. A sequel was announced shortly after, and it seemed that a new horror franchise had been established.

Now, six years later, a third entry in the Hostel series has been released. Roth is no longer involved. The film has not seen a theatrical release, instead given a low key debut on home video to little fanfare. So the question is, what’s happened to the Hostel series?

Packed with a wild amount of picturesque -- albeit, heart- wrenching -- images, the latest from Antonio Bayona looks devastating while remaining respectful of the tragedy through solid filmmaking. The film will be distributed in partnership with Hannover House by SeaWorld's newly formed SeaWorld Pictures division. Hannover House is the entertainment unit of Target Development Group (Pinksheets: Tdgi).

Turtle: The Incredible Journey is an award-winning film that follows the life and migration of a loggerhead turtle from hatching to maturity and a return to its original Florida nesting grounds. The loggerhead turtle, a threatened species, has one of the longest and most difficult migratory patterns of any marine animal: Sea turtles newly hatched on the East Coast of the United States (usually in Florida) make their way from the sand into the ocean, and then begin a voyage that can span the entire Atlantic Ocean, only to return decades later to that same beach.

Olivia Wilde
Why Aren't There More Republicans in Hollywood?
Olivia Wilde
Just saw a new video with Olivia Wilde urging people to vote progressive, and it got me to thinking: Why is Hollywood so darned liberal? —Brenda, San Antonio, via the inbox You speak of the MoveOn.org video featuring Wilde as a hard-bitten activist from the future who berates you—you specifically, thanks to some Facebook-aided personalization—for not voting in the upcoming election. It's certainly not the kind of message you'd see from, say, Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Here's why: Indeed, Wilde and Romany Malco, he of The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, jokingly warn that without your vote, President Palin will, among other things, declare an "ultrawar" against the Pacific Ocean...

TV Review: Donal Logue Leads Pack of Misfits in Charming ‘Terriers’
Chicago – FX continues their streak of quality programming that includes “Rescue Me,” “Justified,” “Archer,” “The League,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” with the very-promising-and-entertaining “Terriers,” a new riff on the private investigator drama with a spectacular pack of TV veterans both in-front and behind-the-camera.

Television Rating: 4.0/5.0

Creator/Executive Producer Ted Griffin (“Ocean’s Eleven”) and Executive Producer Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”) have crafted a clever, witty mystery series not unlike the network’s excellent “Justified” in the way it captures a larger-than-life crime-solver both on-the-job and through his personal problems. “Terriers” is a more erratic program in several ways (some good, some bad) but it is another edgy entry for a network that has helped redefine TV drama in the last decade.

Five Awesome Reasons that Predators is Awesome
I have zero interest in providing any spoilers about Predators here, but if you’re like me and love to watch a movie without even seeing a trailer for it so you have No idea what’s going on, then of course you should skip this post until you’ve seen the film. But without going into a plot synopsis or a real review or any of that nonsense, here are my top five reasons why Predators is awesome:

5. An Elite Group of Highly Trained Strangers Brought Together for One Impossible Job!

This elite squad is way ready for Mission: Homeroom

From The Dirty Dozen to Ocean’S 78,000, any time you bring together a group of highly trained specialists for one specialized job, awesomeness is sure to ensue. No general brings this group together, though, instead some totally unknown force just picks them because they’re elite and because the...

Gloria Stuart Centennial (And The 25 Oldest Living Oscar Nominees!)
One hundred years ago on this very day 30s actress Gloria Stuart was born in Santa Monica. Happy birthday Gloria! Stuart made her name on James Whale's pictures like The Old Dark House (fun movie) and The Invisible Man before her screen career petered out in the 1940s. Then, über famously, James Cameron resurrected her to play the 100 year old survivor of Titanic. And the best part... she's still with us today!

Were you confused like Britney Spears when she tossed the Heart of the Ocean back into it in Titanic? Do you think Kate Winslet hopes to grow up to look just like her? "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying."

-Woody AllenSince Gloria is not the oldest living Oscar nominee, it's list time. Who's still with us? (If I forgot anyone, do let me know in the comments.

Collider Goes to the Set of Red (Retired Extremely Dangerous) – Plus Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura On Set Interview
Bruce Willis is standing next to some very large shipping containers. He’s wearing a black leather coat with a gun in one hand. Next to him is Mary-Louise Parker. She’s frightened because someone is firing a gun in their direction. Across from the two of them is John Malkovich. He’s also wearing a long coat…but he’s holding a large stuffed animal that looks exactly like a pink pig. It’s very funny to look at. More gun fire. Malkovich then says, “Can we kill her now?”

The date is April 5, 2010 and I’m in New Orleans on the set of Summit Entertainment’s Red. We’re in a shipping yard on production day 56 of 60 and the normal heat and humidity of New Orleans is somehow a beautiful sunny afternoon. It’s a perfect day to watch Bruce Willis and company try and kill some bad guys.

MovieWeb's 2009 Fall Movie Guide!
Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.

September

Gamer - September 4th

Starring: Gerard Butler, Kyra Sedgwick, Michael C. Hall, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Leguizamo, Amber Valletta, Terry Crews, Logan Lerman,...

Spotlight: Douglas Edwards - Musician + Composer
Today's spotlight is directed at Douglas Edward, who is both a musician and a composer. Doug's work can be listened to at CDbaby (follow individual links) where most of his scores are sold and showcase a wide variety of genres. Doug's most interesting release may be his collection of short film scores which feature inventive ensembles and still create an album that's a fluid listening experience despite featuring music from a dozen different projects! The following interview discusses most of Doug's credits up to this point with a special focus on overcoming budgetary constraints, criss-crossing genres and performing music in addition to writing it.

How did you discover music for yourself?

I started taking piano lessons in the 3rd grade soon after we moved back to the United States from Germany. I enjoyed playing music, and I especially liked messing around on the piano for hours at a time. In...
